Palladium(II) Modulation Enhances the Water Stability and Aqueous 99TcO4-/ReO4- Removal Performance of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Improving the water stability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential for their use in water pollution treatment and environmental remediation, though it remains technically challenging. Herein, we report a novel cationic MOF constructed with [Th6O4(OH)4(COO)12] units and [CoN4·Cl2] units possessing a ftw-type topology (denoted as 1-Th-Co). 1-Th-Co itself exhibited poor water stability but excellent stability following a palladium(II) modulation strategy. Experimental studies reveal that Co(II) ions in 1-Th-Co were replaced by Pd(II) ions through cation exchange in N,N-diethylformamide (yielding 1-Th-Pd). The planar PdN4 units in 1-Th-Pd were responsible for improving the water stability of the framework. As a result, 1-Th-Pd offered excellent stability, fast adsorption kinetics, and high removal ratios for 99TcO4- and ReO4- (as a 99TcO4- surrogate) in contaminated water. When used in packed columns, 1-Th-Pd can dynamically capture ReO4- from groundwater. This work provides a new avenue for improving the water stability of MOFs, offering new vistas for the decontamination of aqueous solutions containing 99TcO4- and ReO4-.

Self-Assembled and Polymerized Hierarchical Nanostructure Films of Cyanostilbene-Based Reactive AIEgens for Smart Chemosensors

For the development of acid-responsive advanced fluorescent films with a 2D nanostructure, a pyridyl cyanostilbene-based AIEgen (PCRM) is newly synthesized. The synthesized PCRM exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and responds reversibly to acid and base stimuli. To fabricate the nanoporous polymer-stabilized film, PCRM and 4-(octyloxy)benzoic acid (8OB) are complexed in a 1:1 ratio through hydrogen bonding. The PCRM-8OB complex with a smectic mesophase is uniaxially oriented at first and photopolymerized with a crosslinker. By subsequently removing 8OB in an alkaline solution, nanopores are generated in the self-assembled and polymerized hierarchical 2D nanostructure film. The prepared nanoporous fluorescent films exhibit not only the reversible response to acid and base stimuli but also mechanical and chemical robustness. Since the nanoporous fluorescent films have different sensitivities to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) depending on the molecular orientation in the film, advanced acid vapor sensors that can display the risk level according to the concentration of TFA are demonstrated. Reactive AIEgens-based hierarchical nanostructure films with nanopores fabricated by a subsequent process of self-assembly, polymerization, and etching can open a new door for the development of advanced chemosensors.

G-quadruplex DNA-based colorimetric biosensor for the ultrasensitive visual detection of strontium ions using MnO2 nanorods as oxidase mimetics

Strontium-90 (90Sr) is a major radioactive component that has attracted great attention, but its detection remains challenging since there are no specific energy rays indicative of its presence. Herein, a biosensor that is capable of rapidly detecting Sr2+ ions is demonstrated. Simple colorimetric method for sensitive detection of Sr2+ with the help of single-stranded DNA was developed by preparing MnO2 nanorods as oxidase mimic catalysis 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Under weakly acidic conditions, MnO2 exhibited a strong oxidase-mimicking activity to oxidize colorless TMB into blue oxidation products (oxTMB) with discernible absorbance signals. Nevertheless, the introduction of a guanine-rich DNA aptamer inhibited MnO2-mediated TMB oxidation and reduced oxTMB formation, resulting in blue fading and diminished absorbance. Upon the addition of strontium ions to the system, the aptamers formed a stable G-quadruplex structure with strontium ions, thereby restoring the oxidase-mimicking activity of MnO2. Under the best experimental conditions, the absorbance exhibits a linear relationship with the Sr2+ concentration within the range 0.01-200 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.0028 µM. When the concentration of Sr2+ from 10-8 to 10-6 mol L-1, a distinct color change gradient could be observed in paper-based sensor. We successfully applied this approach to determine Sr2+ in natural water samples, obtaining recoveries ranging from 97.6 to 103% with a relative standard deviation of less than 5%. By providing technical solutions for detection, our work contributed to the effective monitoring of transportation of radioactive Sr in the environment.

Relationships Between Defectivity and Porosity in High Surface Area Porous Aromatic Frameworks

Porous aromatic framework (PAF) microporosity is known to be strongly dependent on synthetic approach but little is known about why certain reactions yield significantly and consistently more porous PAFs. This article explores the connections between synthetic pathway, PAF defectivity, and microporosity. Using a network disassembly strategy, we show that defectivity is highly dependent on synthetic approach and that more defective PAFs are associated with lower surface areas and pore volumes. This empirical association is corroborated through systematic introduction of defects to a modelPAF, which results in significant reduction of apparent surface area and pore volumes. Taken together, these data suggest that only highly efficient coupling reactions should be targeted for the synthesis of ultra-high surface area porous aromatic frameworks.

Liquid Metal Interfacial Engineering Strategy to Synthesize All-Carbon-Linked Porous Aromatic Frameworks for the Cycloaddition of CO2 with Epoxides

This study explores the room-temperature synthesis of porous materials and the immobilization of CO2 without the use of metals. The porous aromatic frameworks synthesized at room temperature retain the important functional group structure, and the abundance of carbon-chlorine bonds creates an excellent environment for imidazole linkage. Consequently, a catalyst conducive to the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide is obtained. Hexachloro-p-xylene is explored as the precursor, and a catalyst conducive to carbon dioxide cycloaddition is obtained. The functionalized porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-280-I/B) possess a conversion of 99.6% with a selectivity of 98.9% toward styrene carbonate (SC). The findings of this study can help mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases and enable the production of organic compounds in the circular carbonate platform, turning waste into valuable resources.

Porous organic polymers (POPs) for environmental remediation

Modern global industrialization along with the ever-increasing growth of the population has resulted in continuous enhancement in the discharge and accumulation of various toxic and hazardous chemicals in the environment. These harmful pollutants, including toxic gases, inorganic heavy metal ions, anthropogenic waste, persistent organic pollutants, toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds, etc., are destroying the ecological balance of the environment. Therefore, systematic monitoring and effective remediation of these toxic pollutants either by adsorptive removal or by catalytic degradation are of great significance. From this viewpoint, porous organic polymers (POPs), being two- or three-dimensional polymeric materials, constructed from small organic molecules connected with rigid covalent bonds have come forth as a promising platform toward various leading applications, especially for efficient environmental remediation. Their unique chemical and structural features including high stability, tunable pore functionalization, and large surface area have boosted the transformation of POPs into various macro-physical forms such as thick and thin-film membranes, which led to a new direction in advanced level pollutant removal, separation and catalytic degradation. In this review, our focus is to highlight the recent progress and achievements in the strategic design, synthesis, architectural-engineering and applications of POPs and their composite materials toward environmental remediation. Several strategies to improve the adsorption efficiency and catalytic degradation performance along with the in-depth interaction mechanism of POP-based materials have been systematically summarized. In addition, evolution of POPs from regular powder form application to rapid and more efficient size and chemo-selective, "real-time" applicable membrane-based application has been further highlighted. Finally, we put forward our perspective on the challenges and opportunities of these materials toward real-world implementation and future prospects in next generation remediation technology.

Superiority of the Supramolecular Halogen Bond Receptor over Its H-Bond Analogue toward the Efficient Extraction of Perrhenate from Water

A halogen bond-based water-soluble tetrapodal iodoimidazolium receptor, (L-I)(4Br), exhibited a high degree of efficiency (∼96%) in extracting ReO₄^- from 100% aqueous medium within a wide range of concentrations and of pH values along with excellent reusability. The solid-state X-ray diffraction study showed the trapping of ReO₄^- by (L-I)(4Br) via the Re-O····I halogen bonding interaction. XPS studies also suggested the interaction between I and ReO₄^- through polarization of the electron density of I atoms by ReO₄^-. (L-I)(4Br) is found to be capable of retaining its high extraction efficiency in the presence of competing anions such as F^-, Cl^-, I^-, SO₄^2-, H₂PO₄^-, CO₃^2-, NO₃^-, BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, Cr₂O₇^2-, and a mixture of these anions. Interestingly, (L-I)(4Br) was found to be superior in ReO₄^- extraction as compared to its hydrogen-bond donor analogue, (L-H)(4Br), as confirmed by a series of control experiments and theoretical calculations. Our synthesized dipodal and tripodal halogen bond donor receptors and their H-analogues validated the superiority of these classes of supramolecular halogen bond donor receptors over their hydrogen-bond analogues. (L-I)(4Br) also showed superior practical applicability in terms of the removal of ReO₄^- at anion concentrations as low as ∼100 ppm, which was a major shortcoming of (L-H)(4Br).

Ultra-stable 3D pyridinium salt-based polymeric network nanotrap for selective 99TcO4-/ReO4- capture via hydrophobic and steric engineering

Selective capture of radioactive ⁹⁹TcO₄^- from highly alkaline nuclear waste is highly desirable for environmental remediation and waste disposal. However, the combined features of adsorbents with excellent chemical stability and high capture selectivity for ⁹⁹TcO₄^- have not yet been achieved. Herein, we report an ultra-stable 3D pyridinium salt-based polymeric network (TMP-TBPM) nanotrap with remarkable radiation, acid and base stability for selective capture of ReO₄^- via hydrophobic engineering and steric hindrance, a non-radioactive surrogate of ⁹⁹TcO₄^-. The batch capture experiments show that TMP-TBPM has high capture capacity (918.7 mg g^-1) and fast sorption kinetics (94.3 % removal in 2 min), which can be attributed to the high density of pyridinium salt-based units on the highly accessible pore channels of 3D interconnected low-density skeleton. In addition, the introduction of abundant alkyl and tetraphenylmethane units into the 3D framework not only greatly enhanced the hydrophobicity and stability of TMP-TBPM, but also significantly improved the affinity toward ⁹⁹TcO₄^-/ReO₄^-, enabling reversible and selective capture of ⁹⁹TcO₄^-/ReO₄^- even under highly alkaline conditions. This study exhibits the great potential of 3D pyridinium salt-based polymeric network nanotrap for ⁹⁹TcO₄^-/ReO₄^- capture from highly alkaline nuclear waste, providing a new strategy to construct high-performance cationic polymeric sorbents for radioactive wastewater treatment.

Protocol for optical detection of iodide ions in aqueous environments using a zirconium(IV)-enhanced strategy

Detection of radioactive iodide ions (I^-) is important for protecting human beings from the hazards of radioactive pollution. Herein, we present a protocol for detecting I^- using a zirconium(IV)-enhanced strategy. We describe steps for optimizing the I^- detection approach, establishing standard curves, and finally applying the approach. The use of zirconium(IV) greatly improves the detection performance and endows this approach with an ultralow detection limit of 0.176 nM together with wide applicability in various aqueous environments. "Two-in-one" dual-function luminescent MOF hydrogel for onsite ultra-sensitive detection and efficient enrichment of radioactive uranium in water

In consideration of the severe hazards of radioactive uranium pollution and the growing demand of uranium resources, the novel sensor/adsorbent composite was creatively developed to integrate the dual functions for on-site detection of uranium contamination and efficient recovery of uranium resources. By hybridizing the luminescent 3D terbium (III) metal-organic framework (Tb-MOF) with sodium alginate (SA) gel using terbium (III) as cross-linker, the Tb-MOF/Tb-AG was fabricated with multi-luminescence centers and sufficient binding sites for uranium. Notably, the ultra-high sensitivity with detection limit as low as 1.2 ppt was achieved, which was 4 orders of magnitude lower than the uranium contamination standard in drinking water (USEPA) and even comparable to the sensitivity of the ICP-MS. Furthermore, the very wide quantification range (1.0 ×10^-9-5.0 ×10^-4 mol/L), remarkable adsorption capacity (549.0 mg/g) and outstanding anti-interference ability have been achieved without sophisticated sample preparation procedures. Applied in complex natural water samples from Uranium Tailings and the Pearl River, this method has shown good detection accuracy. The ultra high sensitivity and great adsorption capacity for uranium could be ascribed to the synergistic coordination, hydrogen bonding and ion exchange between uranium and Tb-MOF/Tb-AG. The mechanisms were explored by infrared spectroscopy, batch experiments, X-ray photoelectron studies and energy dispersive spectroscopic studies. In addition, the Tb-MOF/Tb-AG can be reused for uranium adsorption.

3D Ionic Olefin-Linked Conjugated Microporous Polymers for Selective Detection and Removal of TcO4-/ReO4- from Wastewater

Technetium (⁹⁹Tc) is a highly toxic radioactive nuclear wastewater contaminant. Real-time detection of ⁹⁹Tc is very difficult due to its difficult-to-complex nature. Herein, a novel three-dimensional ionic olefin-linked conjugated microporous polymer (TFPM-EP-Br) is constructed using tetrakis(4-aldehyde phenyl)methane (TFPM) as the central monomer. The unique cationic cavity and highly hydrophobic framework enable TFPM-EP-Br to act as a fluorescent sensor for TcO₄^-. The fluorophores of TFPM-EP-Br can be quenched due to electron transfer from TFPM-EP-Br to TcO₄^- and the formation of strongly nonfluorescent complexes. Meanwhile, the regular pore channels are beneficial for the fast mass transfer of TcO₄^-, resulting in an ultrafast response time (less than 2 s) with an ultralow detection limit (33.3 nM). In addition, the ultrahigh specific surface area enables TFPM-EP-Br to combine the ability to synergistically detect and remove radioactive ⁹⁹Tc. From this perspective, the novel conjugated microporous polymer has made a breakthrough in the detection and extraction of radioactive contaminants.

Two-Fold Interlocking Cationic Metal-Organic Framework Material with Exchangeable Chloride for Perrhenate/Pertechnetate Sorption

Albeit reported substantial sorbents for elimination of TcO₄^-, the issue of secondary contamination caused by released counterions (such as NO₃^-) from the cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) has not come into the sufficient limelight for researchers. Herein, our efforts are dedicated to settle the matter through synthesis of NiCl₂ based on the cationic MOF (ZJU-X4). Less harmful chlorides are used as exchangeable anions for replacing hazardous anions. Notably, ZJU-X4 exhibited fast sorption kinetics, high sorption capacity of 395 mg/g, decent selectivity, and excellent reusability in four recycles. The results of ion chromatography revealed that the released chloride ion was equal to sorption of target ions, and pair distribution functions were employed to analyze the changes in ZJU-X4 after sorption of ReO₄^-, clearly elucidating the anion-exchange mechanism. Furthermore, in the dynamic sorption experiments, ReO₄^- could be facilely and effectively removed and recovered, showing the value of practical applications. This work indicated that cationic MOF-based metal chloride salts would be a better choice for anionic sorbents.

Two coordination polymers as multi-responsive luminescent sensors for the detection of UO22+, Cr(vi), and the NFT antibiotic

Two CPs have been synthesized using solvothermal method and can act as multi-responsive luminescent probe to detect UO22+ cation, Cr2O72−/CrO42− anions, and nitrofuran antibiotic in aqueous media with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Constructing Cationic Metal-Organic Framework Materials Based on Pyrimidyl as a Functional Group for Perrhenate/Pertechnetate Sorption

Cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are widely used in the anion separation field, but there are few reports of pyrimidyl ligands as building units. In this work, three new cationic MOFs based on pyrimidyl as functional group ligands were synthesized for the removal of radioactive pertechnetate from aqueous solution. The pyrimidyl ligands were designed by incorporating pyrimidyl units into the skeletons of benzene, triphenylamine, and tetraphenylethylene, respectively. Taking advantage of multiple coordination sites of pyrimidyl groups, three cationic MOFs (ZJU-X11, ZJU-X12, and ZJU-X13) with diverse structures were solvothermally synthesized using silver ion as the metal node. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy mapping demonstrated that these three cationic MOFs could capture ReO₄^- via anion exchange, but the sorption capabilities were distinctly different. With 95% removal toward ReO₄^-, ZJU-X11 showed the strongest anion-exchange competence among the three MOFs. According to the results of batch experiments, ZJU-X11 could achieve sorption equilibrium within 10 min, remove 518 mg of ReO₄^- per 1 g of ZJU-X11, remove most of ReO₄^- after four recycles, and maintain satisfactory selectivity in the presence of excess competing anions, which is one of the best MOF materials for removing ReO₄^-/TcO₄^- among the three cationic MOFs. This work indicates that the pyrimidyl group is a promising multiple site to build versatile cationic MOFs.

Screening and Discrimination of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Aqueous Solution Using a Luminescent Metal-Organic Framework Sensor Array

The extensive production and large-scale use of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have raised their presence in aquatic environments worldwide. Thus, the facile and reliable screening of PFASs in aqueous systems is of great significance. Herein, we designed a novel fluorescent sensor array for the rapid screening and discrimination of multiple PFASs in water. The sensor array comprised three highly stable zirconium porphyrinic luminescent metal-organic frameworks (i.e., PCNs) with different topological structures. The sensing mechanism was based on the static fluorescence quenching of PCNs by PFASs upon their adsorptive interactions. The fluorescence response patterns were characteristic for each PFAS because of their different adsorption affinities toward different PCNs. Through the interpretation of response patterns by statistical methods, the proposed PCN array successfully discriminated six different kinds of PFASs, each PFAS at different concentrations and PFAS mixtures at different molar ratios. The practicability of this array was further verified by effectively discriminating PFASs in two real water samples. Remarkably, the PCN sensors exhibited a very short response time toward PFASs (within 10 s) due to the ordered pore structure allowing fast PFAS diffusion. This study not only provides a facile method for rapid PFAS screening in waters but also broadens the application of luminescent metal-organic frameworks and array techniques in sensing fields.

Luminescent 2D Pillared-Bilayer Metal-Organic Coordination Networks for Selective Sensing of ReO4- in Water

For the preference in nuclear energy, one of the high-level liquid waste materials in the form of pertechnetate anion (TcO₄^-) has become an environmental hazard due to its mobility into groundwater and soil. For its sequestration, numerous efforts have been reported in recent years. However, its selective sensing, even using its nonradioactive surrogate oxidizing perrhenate ion (ReO₄^-), in aqueous media is very limited. To develop novel materials for such a purpose, we have designed an amino acid-functionalized bent dicarboxylic acid, 4-(((4-((carboxymethyl)carbamoyl)phenyl)amino)methyl)benzoic acid (H₂hipamifba), for the strategic room-temperature synthesis of two isostructural and highly luminescent two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic coordination networks (MOCNs), {[Cu(hipamifba)(4,4'-azbpy)]·2CH₃OH·2H₂O}_n (1) and {[Zn(hipamifba)(4,4'-azbpy)]·2CH₃OH·2H₂O}_n (2), where 4,4'-azobipyridine (4,4'-azbpy) as a pillar linker imparts luminescent properties in the architectures. The single-crystal X-ray structural analysis demonstrates that 1 and 2 have pillared-bilayer 2D networks with the sq1/Shubnikov tetragonal plane net topology. These multiresponsive luminescent materials were gainfully employed for the selective sensing of ReO₄^- in water with a detection limit of 3.4 and 5.4 ppm for 1 and 2, respectively. It is noteworthy to point out that these are the first neutral sensors for such study as the only other two sensors reported in the literature are cationic in nature. Their suitability (selectivity, stability, and recyclability) as excellent water-stable sensors was established through the competitive analyte test and a comparison of pristine and spent samples by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Further, the mechanism of selective detection is explained by the time-resolved studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Unveiling the Uncommon Fluorescent Recognition Mechanism towards Pertechnetate Using a Cationic Metal-Organic Framework Bearing N-Heterocyclic AIE Molecules

As one of most problematic radionuclides, technetium-99, mainly in the form of anionic pertechnetate (TcO₄ ^- ), exhibits high environmental mobility, long half-life, and radioactive hazard. Due to low charge density and high hydrophobicity for this tetrahedral anion, it is extremely difficult to recognize it in water. Seeking efficient and selective recognition method for TcO₄ ^- is still a big challenge. Herein, a new water-stable cationic metal-organic framework (ZJU-X8) was reported, bearing tetraphenylethylene pyrimidine-based aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ligands and attainable silver sites for TcO₄ ^- detection. ZJU-X8 underwent an obvious spectroscopic change from brilliant blue to flavovirens and exhibited splendid selectivity towards TcO₄ ^- . This uncommon fluorescent recognition mechanism was well elucidated by batch sorption experiments and DFT calculations. It was found that only TcO₄ ^- could enter into the body of ZJU-X8 through anion exchange whereas other competing anions were excluded outside. Subsequently, after interaction between TcO₄ ^- and silver ions, the electron polarizations from pyrimidine rings to Ag⁺ cations significantly lowered the energy level of the π* orbital and thus reduced the π-π* energy gap, resulting in a red-shift in the fluorescent spectra.

Ultrasensitive, rapid and selective sensing of hazardous fluoride ion in aqueous solution using a zirconium porphyrinic luminescent metal-organic framework

The development of a rapid and sensitive method for the detection of fluoride ion (F^-) in aqueous systems is of great significance for human health and environmental monitoring. In this study, a zirconium porphyrinic luminescent metal-organic framework (LMOF), PCN-222, was employed as a novel fluorescent probe for the ultrasensitive, rapid and selective detection of F^- in water. The PCN-222 probe was prepared by a facile solvothermal method. It exhibited good fluorescence stability and was highly stable in water. The fluorescence emission of PCN-222 could be effectively and selectively quenched by F^- due to the strong coordination affinity of F^- to the zirconium clusters in PCN-222. The proposed fluorescence method for F^- detection based on PCN-222 probe afforded a linear response range of 1-20 μmol/L and a very low detection limit (0.048-0.065 μmol/L) in reference to many reported F^- fluorescent probes. Moreover, a rapid response time (<10 s) was obtained due to the open and uniform pore structure of PCN-222 that allowed the fast diffusion of F^- to interact with the zirconium recognition sites. Finally, the PCN-222 probe was successfully applied for the fluorescence detection of F^- in real water samples. These results highlight the great application potential of LMOF in the sensing fields.
