Highly Dispersed Nanocomposite of AgBr in g-C3N4 Matrix Exhibiting Efficient Antibacterial Effect on Drought-Resistant Pseudomonas putida under Dark and Light Conditions

Amplifying bactericidal activity: Surfactant-mediated AgBr thin film coating over two-dimensional vertically aligned ZnO nanorods for dark-light dual mode disinfection

Thin film coatings with potent antibacterial properties find critical applications in diverse domains such as medical devices, frequently touched surfaces, and food packaging for combating microbial proliferation across diverse scenarios. Two-dimensional photocatalytic antimicrobial coatings, offering a substantial actual-to-apparent surface ratio, hold immense potential for achieving this objective. However, realizing antibacterial performance not just under light but also in dark conditions remains a challenge. To address this, we present AgBr-coated vertically aligned ZnO nanorods (NRs) thin film architecture, employing a unique surfactant-mediated solution-phase spin-coating approach for achieving uniform deposition of AgBr onto ZnO NRs. The resulting ZnO NRs/AgBr heterojunction architectures have been characterized for their microstructural, morphological, elemental, optical, and wettability attributes. The studies have ascertained the tunability of AgBr content by modulating the concentration of its surfactant-based precursor solution. Further, valence band (VB) analyses revealed an increase in the electron density near to the VB edge. The dual role of AgBr as an antimicrobial agent and a photosensitizer, effectively enhancing the visible-light photodisinfection efficacy of ZnO NRs, has been evident through the dark-light dual mode antibacterial studies. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements have shown hydroxyl radicals being majorly responsible for the visible-light photodisinfection performance. Encouragingly, reusability assessments showcase significant promise, while artificial sweat-wiping studies on the structures unveil heightened photodisinfection efficacy. This enhancement could be attributed to components like urea and lactic acid, speculated to augment the photocatalytic efficiency by minimizing charge recombination.

Plasmonic coupling-boosted photothermal nanoreactor for efficient solar light-driven photocatalytic water splitting

Photothermal nanoreactor with rapid charge transfer and improved spectral utilization is a key point in photocatalysis research. Herein, silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) were coating on the surface of porous graphitic carbon nitride nano vesicles (PCNNVs) to form Ag2S/PCNNVs nanoreactors by a simple calcination method for obtaining efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution under simulated/real sunlight irradiation. In particularly, the as-prepared optimal 3% Ag2S/PCNNVs sample exhibited the H2 production rate of 34.8 mmol h-1 g-1, which was 3.5 times higher than that of bare PCNNVs. The enhancement of photothermal-assisted activity over the Ag2S/PCNNVs composite system is mainly attributed to the coupling of the photothermal conversion performance of Ag2S QDs and the thermal insulation performance of PCNNVs based on the plasmonic coupling-boosted photothermal nanoreactor. This study presents a promising strategy for the development of high-efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalysts.

Acceleration of Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction at Intimate Interface in AgBr/BiOBr Heterojunctions via a Co-anion Strategy

Constructing heterojunctions with strong interfacial interactions can accelerate the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. However, finding a simple strategy to construct tightly connected heterojunctions remains a major challenge. In this work, AgBr/BiOBr S-scheme heterojunctions were designed via a straightforward co-anionic strategy without using a solvent. The experimental results indicate that the AgBr/BiOBr heterojunction with a close contact interface can extend the use of visible light, accelerate the separation, and induce the transfer of photoelectrons and holes while maintaining an excellent redox capacity. Undoubtedly, the photocatalytic reduction rate of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide by 1.0 AgBr/BiOBr is 87.73 μmol·g-1·h-1 (quantum efficiency is 0.57%), which is 12.15 times and 4.45 times higher than that of pure AgBr and BiOBr, respectively. The present work provides insights into a simple strategy for the preparation of strongly interacting interfacial heterojunctions for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Chitosan-based carbon nitride-polydopamine‑silver composite dressing with antibacterial properties for wound healing

Infection represents a major clinical barrier that delays wound healing, while the overuse of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance. Hence, it is of particular important to develop a new type of dressing to combat bacterial resistance. Herein, a carbon nitride-polydopamine‑silver complex (C₃N₄-PDA-Ag) was prepared using the photocatalyst C₃N₄ and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to achieve a synergistic antimicrobial effect. The solution casting method was then employed to further modify the C₃N₄-PDA-Ag complex by compounding it with chitosan (CS), thereby forming a C₃N₄-PDA-Ag@CS film. The results revealed that the C₃N₄-PDA-Ag@CS film exhibits superior antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared to the CS group. The hemolysis, cytotoxicity, and in vivo implantation experiments indicated that the composite film possesses excellent in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. In addition, the composite dressing promoted wound healing in infected mice by facilitating collagen deposition and accelerating epidermal regeneration. Collectively, the findings of this study clearly demonstrate that the C₃N₄-PDA-Ag@CS composite dressing has excellent antibacterial properties, biocompatibility, and enhances wound healing, thus providing a strategy for the application of photocatalytic materials for the treatment of infected wounds.

Preparation of a Bi6O5(OH)3(NO3)5·2H2O/AgBr composite and its long-lasting antibacterial efficacy

A novel Bi₆O₅(OH)₃(NO₃)₅·2H₂O/AgBr (6535BBN/AgBr) composite with long-lasting antibacterial efficacy was prepared. The microstructure of the composite was characterized. AgBr nanoparticles (NPs) were sandwiched in 6535BBN nanosheets (NSs) or loaded on their surfaces. The utilization of 6535BBN as carriers contributed to the long-term lasting antibacterial activity of the composite after storage in water or 0.9% NaCl. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by inhibition zones against E. coli. The inhibition zone diameters of 6535BBN/AgBr stored in water for 0 h, 8 h, 16 h, and 48 h were measured as 22.50, 21.71, 20.43, and 20.29 mm, respectively. The activity of the composite after storage in water for 48 h remained 90.2% of that in the beginning. After storing in 0.9% NaCl for 16 h, the activity was determined to be 90.1% of that in the beginning. In comparison with the rapid decrease in the antibacterial activity of pure AgBr, the slow reduction of 6535BBN/AgBr after storage indicates long-lasting efficacy. The excellent dispersion states of 6535BBN/AgBr powders after storage in solutions were revealed, and the positive relationship between the dispersion state and its long-lasting antibacterial activity was suggested. Based on the unique load-on-carrier (LOC) structure, the long-lasting antibacterial performance was promoted by the synergy of the sharp-edge-cutting effect of 6535BBN NSs, prolonged ROS antibacterial effect, and restrained sterilization effects of silver ions caused by their slow release.

The effects of g-C3N4/biochar and g-C3N4 on bacterial community in riverbed sediment

Biochar had been widely used to improve the activity of photocatalysts, the biochar-based photocatalysts had more potential for environmental pollution remediation, but their effect on the sediment remained unknown. To understand these, the typical photocatalyst g-C₃N₄ was modified by biochar to develop g-C₃N₄/biochar with enhanced photocatalytic ability. Riverbed sediment was exposed to g-C₃N₄ and g-C₃N₄/biochar respectively for 30 days, and Illumina sequencing was utilized to examine the changes in the bacterial community in the sediment. The results showed that in riverbed sediment, g-C₃N₄ exposure had a concentration-dependent effect on the diversity of bacteria, while g-C₃N₄/biochar exposure had a slight influence on the bacterial diversity and the diversity almost maintained stable with different g-C₃N₄/biochar concentration. The application of g-C₃N₄ exhibited an inhibition influence on the growth of Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Rokubacteria in sediment, whose relative abundance increased when g-C₃N₄ was 25 mg/kg, and then decreased when g-C₃N₄ beyond this concentration. The presence of g-C₃N₄/biochar increased the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria in sediment and showed no obvious impact on other dominant phyla. Both g-C₃N₄ and g-C₃N₄/biochar could alter the levels of TP, NN, and AN in the sediment, but the magnitude of the changes of these physicochemical factors caused by g-C₃N₄/biochar was much smaller than those caused by g-C₃N₄. In addition, the complexity of the bacterial community network was reduced in a high concentration of g-C₃N₄, while it remained stable with different concentrations of g-C₃N₄/biochar treatments. Totally, this study demonstrated that, compared to g-C₃N₄, g-C₃N₄/biochar was able to maintain the relative stability of the bacterial community in riverbed sediment and mitigate the negative effects of photocatalysts to some extent, making biochar an ecological remediation agent with great potential for application.

Room-Temperature Deep-UV Photoluminescence from Low-Dimensional Hexagonal Boron Nitride Prepared Using a Facile Synthesis

Identification and evaluation of defect levels in low-dimensional materials is an important aspect in quantum science. In this article, we report a facile synthesis method of low-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and study light emission characteristics due to the defects. The thermal annealing procedure is optimized to obtain clean multilayered h-BN as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. UV-vis spectroscopy shows the optical energy gap of 5.28 eV, which is comparable to the reported energy gap for exfoliated, clean h-BN samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the location of the valence band edge at 2 eV. The optimized synthesis route of h-BN generates two kinds of defects, which are characterized using room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The defects emit light at 4.18 eV [deep-UV (DUV)] and 3.44 eV (UV) photons. The intensity of PL has an oscillatory dependence on the excitation energy for the defect emitting DUV light. A series of spectral lines are observed with the energy ranging between 2.56 and 3.44 eV. The average peak-to-peak energy separation is about 125 meV. The locations of the spectral lines can be modeled using Franck-Condon-type transition and associated with displaced harmonic oscillator approximation. Our facile route gives an easier approach to prepare clean h-BN, which is essential for classical two-dimensional material-based electronics and single-photon-based quantum devices.

Effects of g-C3N4 on bacterial community and tetracycline resistance genes in two typical sediments in tetracycline pollution remediation

Photocatalysis, as a novel technique, has been widely used for antibiotic pollution remediation in wastewater. In the processes of degradation and removal of antibiotics, the impact of photocatalysts on microenvironment is very important but remains poorly understood. In the present study, the effect of typical photocatalyst g-C3N4 (Graphitic carbon nitride) on microbial community was investigated in two sediment types (riverbed sediment and pig-farm sediment) polluted by tetracycline (TC) in central southern China. The riverbed sediment and pig farm sediment samples were respectively exposed to g-C3N4 (25, 75, 125 mg⋅kg-1) and TC (60, 120, 180 mg⋅L-1) treatments alone or combination for 30 days, respectively. The bacterial community and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) of the treated sediments were analyzed by Illumina sequencing and metagenomic sequencing. Studies had shown that: TC, g-C3N4, and TC/g-C3N4 have significant effects on the changes of microbial communities and components in riverbed sediment, but they do not exist in pig farm sediment. The most alterations of microbial taxa were Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, and Desulfobacterota in riverbed sediment, and Elusimicrobiota in the pig farm sediment under various treatments. Through network analysis, it was found that the distribution of microorganisms in the pig farm sediment is more complex and more stable. The addition of g-C3N4 reduced the absolute abundance of ARGs in the two examined sediments, but not significantly changed their relative abundance of ARGs. The g-C3N4 application was beneficial to the removal of TC residues and to the prevention of the generation and transmission of ARGs in sediments. Our results suggested that g-C3N4 was a suitable photocatalyst with excellent application prospect for the removal of TC residues and the control of ARGs in environment.

An overview of nanomaterial-based novel disinfection technologies for harmful microorganisms: Mechanism, synthesis, devices and application

Harmful microorganism (e.g., new coronavirus) based infection is the most important security concern in life sciences and healthcare. This article aims to provide a state-of-the-art review on the development of advanced technology based on nanomaterial disinfection/sterilization techniques (NDST) for the first time including the nanomaterial types, disinfection techniques, bactericidal devices, sterilization products, and application scenarios (i.e., water, air, medical healthcare), with particular brief account of bactericidal behaviors referring to varied systems. In this emerging research area spanning the years from 1998 to 2021, total of ~200 publications selected for the type of review paper and research articles were reviewed. Four typical functional materials (namely type of metal/metal oxides, S-based, C-based, and N-based) with their development progresses in disinfection/sterilization are summarized with a list of synthesis and design. Among them, the widely used silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are considered as the most effective bacterial agents in the type of nanomaterials at present and has been reported for inactivation of viruses, fungi, protozoa. Some methodologies against (1) disinfection by-products (DBPs) in traditional sterilization, (2) noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) agglomeration and release, (3) toxic metal leaching, (4) solar spectral response broadening, and (5) photogenerated e^-/h⁺ pairs recombination are reviewed and discussed in this field, namely (1) alternative techniques and nanomaterials, (2) supporter anchoring effect, (3) nonmetal functional nanomaterials, (4) element doping, and (5) heterojunction constructing. The feasible strategies in the perspective of NDST are proposed to involve (1) non-noble metal disinfectors, (2) multi-functional nanomaterials, (3) multi-component nanocomposite innovation, and (4) hybrid techniques for disinfection/sterilization system. It is promising to achieve 100% bactericidal efficiency for 10⁸ CFU/mL within a short time of less than 30 min.

Enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activity of acridinium-grafted g-C3N4 with broad-spectrum light absorption for antimicrobial photocatalytic therapy

As a metal-free polymeric photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has attracted great attention owing to its high stability and low toxicity. However, g-C₃N₄ suffers from low light harvesting ability which limits its applications in antimicrobial photocatalytic therapy (APCT). Herein, acridinium (ADN)-grafted g-C₃N₄ (ADN@g-C₃N₄) nanosheets are prepared via covalent grafting of ADN to g-C₃N₄. The obtained ADN@g-C₃N₄ exhibits a narrow optical band gap (2.12 eV) and a wide optical absorption spectrum (intensity a.u. > 0.30) ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared region. Moreover, ADN@g-C₃N₄ would produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation to exert effective sterilization and biofilm elimination activities against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Molecular dynamics simulation reveals that the ADN@g-C₃N₄ may move toward, tile and insert the bacterial lipid bilayer membrane through strong van der Waals and electrostatic interaction, decreasing the order parameter of the lipid while increasing the conducive of ROS migration, inducing ADN@g-C₃N₄ with improved antimicrobial and antibiofilm performance. Moreover, ADN@g-C₃N₄ could efficiently eradicate oral biofilm on artificial teeth surfaces. This work may provide a broad-spectrum light-induced photocatalytic therapy for preventing and treating dental plaque diseases and artificial teeth-related infections, showing potential applications for intractable biofilm treatment applications. An acridinium-grafted g-C₃N₄ (ADN@g-C₃N₄) with a narrow band gap and broad-spectrum light absorption was synthesized. The narrow optical band gap and improved electrostatic interaction with bacterial lipid bilayer membrane of ADN@g-C₃N₄ strengthened the ROS generation and facilitated the diffusion of ROS to bacteria surface, leading to enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activity against bacteria and corresponding biofilm under light irradiation. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: An acridinium-grafted g-C₃N₄ (ADN@g-C₃N₄) with a narrow band gap and broad-spectrum light absorption was developed as an antimicrobial photocatalytic therapy agent. The ADN@g-C₃N₄ exhibited enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activity against bacteria and corresponding biofilm under light irradiation, showing potential applications for intractable biofilm treatment.

Preparation and antibacterial properties of an AgBr@SiO2/GelMA composite hydrogel

Pure gelatin hydrogels lack antibacterial function and have poor mechanical properties, which restrict their application in wound dressings. In this study, nanosized silver bromide-doped mesoporous silica (AgBr@SiO2) microspheres with hollow structures were prepared by a modified Stober method. The novel microspheres can not only release silver ions to treat bacteria but also release drugs to treat skin wound. Furthermore, AgBr@SiO2 microspheres were modified with propyl methacrylate, incorporated into methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), and crosslinked by UV light to prepare AgBr@SiO2/GelMA dressings consisting of composite hydrogels. The results showed that the AgBr@SiO2 microspheres could enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. With the increase in the AgBr@SiO2 concentration from 0.5 to 1 mg/mL, the dressings demonstrated effective antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, full-thickness skin wounds in vivo wound healing studies with Sprague-Dawley rats were evaluated. When treated with AgBr@SiO2/GelMA containing 1 mg/mL AgBr@SiO2, only 15% of the wound area left on day 10. Histology results also showed the epidermal and dermal layers were better organized. These results suggest that AgBr@SiO2/GelMA-based dressing materials could be promising candidates for wound dressings.

Quaternized Polydopamine Coatings for Anchoring Molecularly Dispersed Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Silver Salts

Because of the broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy, silver-based coatings have emerged as the popular choice to apply over frequently touched surfaces for mitigating the spread of nosocomial infections. Despite the advancements through various coating strategies, clustering of the active component remains a bottleneck in achieving the molecular-scale dispersion of silver. To circumvent this, the current study takes advantage of the recent findings of quaternary ammonium moieties forming molecular complexes with silver salts that differ from the simple adduct between the individual components. Here we demonstrate the quaternization of oxidatively cross-linked polydopamine coatings over magnetite nanoparticles to anchor ionic silver at a molecular-scale dispersion. The silver-derivatized materials exhibit remarkable broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties against representative microbes like E. coli, S. aureus, and A. niger. Also, the study reveals the materials' antibiofilm efficacy (∼80-90%) against both bacteria. Further recyclability studies have proven the sustained bactericidal properties up to five cycles. The surface derivatization strategy has then been extended to cover glass slips that have also shown the retention of the bactericidal properties even after wiping 20 times with artificial sweat. The biocompatibility of the materials has been ascertained with treated water against the mouse fibroblast and human embryonic kidney cell lines. The current study offers insights in developing coatings with molecular-scale dispersion of ionic silver to achieve broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties in an atom-economical and sustainable manner.

Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Nitrogen-Deficient Ag/g-C3N4 Nanofiber Films with Enhanced Charge Transfer Dynamics for Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity

Molecular self-assembly of organic molecules through noncovalent interactions is a powerful strategy for designing functional materials. Herein, we fabricated a novel free-standing Ag/g-C₃N₄ nanofiber (Ag/CNNF) film via a water-based molecular engineering approach followed by pyrolysis using a cyanuric acid-melamine complex as the precursor. Uniform dispersion of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and incorporation of nitrogen vacancies were synchronously introduced into the 3D highly interconnected porous CNNF framework. The resulting Ag/CNNF film with multilevel interlayer spacing distributions significantly expedited more sufficient charge transfer dynamics not only at Schottky junction sites but also throughout hierarchical CN by exciton dissociation. Benefiting from the synergistic enhancement in visible light harvesting capability and steered charge carrier transfer in a longitudinal direction, the Ag/CNNF film presented remarkably boosted photocatalytic ability both for hydrogen production and tetracycline degradation. The optimal Ag/CNNF-2 film exhibited a prominent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 1240 μmol g^-1 h^-1 without the Pt co-catalyst under visible light illumination, which was 10.3 times as high as that of bulk g-C₃N₄. Significantly, 1D Ag/g-C₃N₄ nanofibers self-assembled into an ordered and macroscopic film, which was more favorable in practical applications owing to good reusability and high processability. This work paved the way for the facile preparation of supramolecular self-assembled CN-based film photocatalysts.

Lactobacillus amylovorus derived lipase-mediated silver derivatization over poly(ε-caprolactone) towards antimicrobial coatings

Owing to the probiotic origin, lipases-derived from the Lactobacilli sp. are considered to be promising biomaterials for in vivo applications. On a different note, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-an FDA-approved polymer for implantable applications-lacks inherent antimicrobial property, because of which suitable modifications are required to render it with bactericidal activity. Here, we employ Lactobacillus amylovorous derived lipase to surface derivatize the PCL films with silver that is a highly efficient inorganic broad-spectrum antimicrobial substance. Two different surface functionalization strategies have been employed over the alkaline hydrolyzed PCL films towards this purpose: In the first strategy, lipase-capped silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been synthesized in a first step, which have been covalently immobilized over the activated carboxylic groups on the PCL film surface in a subsequent step. In the second strategy, the lipase was covalently immobilized over the activated carboxylic groups of the PCL film surface in the first step, over which silver was deposited in the second step using the dip-coating method. While the characterization study using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has revealed the successful derivatization of silver over the PCL film, the surface characterization using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) study has shown a distinct morphological change with higher silver loading in both strategies. The antimicrobial studies employing E. coli have revealed 100 % inhibition in the bacterial growth in 4-6 h with the Ag NPs-immobilized PCL films as opposed to >8 h with those prepared through the dip-coating method. Additionally, the cytotoxicity assay using mouse fibroblast cells has shown that the PCL films immobilized with lipase-capped Ag NPs exhibit high cell compatibility, similar to that of pristine PCL film, and thereby making it suitable for in vivo applications.

Recent advances in graphite carbon nitride-based nanocomposites: structure, antibacterial properties and synergies

Bacterial infections and transmission threaten human health and well-being. Graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), a promising photocatalytic antibacterial nanomaterial, has attracted increasing attention to combat bacterial transmission, due to the outstanding stability, high efficiency and environmental sustainability of this material. However, the antibacterial efficiency of g-C₃N₄ is affected by several factors, including its specific surface area, rapid electron/hole recombination processes and optical absorption properties. To improve the efficiency of the antibacterial properties of g-C₃N₄ and extend its range of applications, various nanocomposites have been prepared and evaluated. In this review, the advances in amplifying the photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency of g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites is discussed, including different topologies, noble metal decoration, non-noble metal doping and heterojunction construction. The enhancement mechanisms and synergistic effects in g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites are highlighted. The remaining challenges and future perspectives of antibacterial g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites are also discussed.

Graphite Carbon Nitride and Its Composites for Medicine and Health Applications

With the progress of science and technology and the improvement of people's living standards, the performance of traditional materials can no longer fully meet the needs of social development. Graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ), as a new type of nanomaterial, has good properties. Its unique graphite like structure and stable thermodynamic characteristics have led an increasing number of researchers to explore its diverse functions and use this as a basis to develop related energy and products for applications in various fields. Among them, applications in the field of medicine health have become popular in recent years. Therefore, this review summarizes the synthesis methods of g-C₃ N₄ and its composites, as well as their applications in food, medicine, environmental monitoring and disease treatment, in the hope of providing references and basis for further expanding the applications of g-C₃ N₄ in large health areas.
