Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Ionic Frameworks for Precise Membrane Separation of Small Nanoparticles

Smart pillar[5]arene-based PDMAEMA/PES beads for selective dye pollutants removal: design, synthesis, chemical-physical characterization, and adsorption kinetic studies

This article reports on the synthesis of an innovative smart polymer, P5-QPDMAEMA, opportunely developed with the aim of combining the responsiveness of PDMAEMA polymer and the host-guest properties of covalently linked pillar[5]arenes. Thanks to a traditional Non-Induced Phase Separation (NIPS) process performed at various coagulation pH, the blending of P5-QPDMAEMA with polyethersulfone gave rise to the formation of functional beads for the removal of organic dyes in water. Adsorption tests are carried out on all the produced blend-based beads by employing two representative dyes, the cationic methylene blue (MB), and the anionic methyl orange (MO). In particular, the P5-QPDMAEMA based beads, prepared at acidic pH, featured the best MO removal rate (i. e., 91.3 % after 150 minutes starting from a 20 mg ⋅ L-1 solution) and a high selectivity towards the removal of the selected anionic dye. Based on the adsorption kinetics and isotherm calculations, the pseudo-first order and Freundlich models were shown to be the most suitable to describe the MO adsorption behavior, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 21.54 mg ⋅ g-1. Furthermore, zwitterionic beads are obtained by a post-functionalization of the PDMAEMA and the P5-QPDMAEMA based beads, to test their removal capability towards both anionic and cationic dyes, as shown.

Rational tuning of binding properties of pillar [5] arene-based sensing material by synergistic effect and its application for fluorescent turn-on detection of isoniazid and controlled reversible morphology

Isoniazid (INH) is crucial in the treatment of tuberculosis; however, its overuse may induce significant gastrointestinal and hepatic side effects. On October 27, 2017, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, under the auspices of the World Health Organization, published a list of carcinogens for preliminary collation and reference. Isoniazid was categorized as a Group 3 carcinogen. The efficient detection of INH poses an important and challenging task. In this study, a "synergistic effect" is incorporated into the pillar (Yamagishi and Ogoshi, 2018) [5] arene-based macrocyclic host (DPA) by strategically attaching bis-p-hydroxybenzoic acid groups to the opposite ends of the pillar (Yamagishi and Ogoshi, 2018) [5] arene. This combination endows DPA with a reversible and selective fluorescence response to isoniazid. Additionally, DPA exhibits excellent analytical capabilities for isoniazid, including speed and selectivity, with a detection limit as low as 4.85 nM. Concurrently, DPA can self-assemble into a microsphere structure, which is convertible into micrometer-sized tubular structures through host-guest interactions with isoniazid. The introduction of a competitive guest, trimethylamine, enables the reversion to its microsphere structure. Consequently, this study presents an innovative and straightforward synthetic approach for smart materials that facilitates the reversible morphological transition between microspheres and microtubes in response to external chemical stimuli. This discovery provides a valuable strategy for designing "synergistic effects" in constructing trace-level isoniazid-responsive interfaces, with potential applications across various fields, such as controlled drug delivery.

Enantiomeric filtration separation of supramolecular framework membranes

A two-dimensional supramolecular framework with a tetragonal structure is constructed via host-guest interaction of a pillar[5]arene grafted polyanion with a modified porphyrin. The membrane of the framework with a chiral counterion exhibits enantiomeric selectivity during the filtration of racemic molecules with amino groups, demonstrating broadened potential in chiral separations.

Structure Transformation and Morphologic Modulation of Supramolecular Frameworks for Nanoseparation and Enzyme Loading

Supramolecular framework (SF) encourages the emergence of porous structures with molecular flexibility while the dimension and morphology controls are less involved even though critical factors are vital for various utilizations. Targeting this purpose, two isolated components are designed and their stepped combinations via ionic interaction, metal coordination, and hydrogen bond into framework assembly with two morphologic states are realized. The zinc coordination to an ionic complex of polyoxometalate with three cationic terpyridine ligands constructs 2D hexagonal SF structure. A further growth along perpendicular direction driven by hydrogen bonding between grafted mannose groups leads to 3D SF assemblies, providing a modulation superiority in one framework for multiple utilizations. The large area of multilayered SF sheet affords a filtration membrane for strict separation of nanoparticles/proteins under gently reduced pressures while the granular SF assembly demonstrates an efficient carrier to load and fix horse radish peroxidase with maintained activity for enzymatic catalysis.

Non-Stop Switching Separation of Superfine Solid/Liquid Dispersed Phases in Oil and Water Systems Using Polymer-Assisted Framework Fiber Membranes

Fabricating filtration membranes with wide applicability and high efficiency is always a challenge in the precise separation of small colloidal particles under mild conditions. For this purpose, a strategy mixing supramolecular framework fiber with polymer is adopted. The fibrous assembly in the gel state provides uniform nanopores for both channel and interception and controlled wettability for lyophilic/lyophobic switching. The used polymer fills the gaps between fiber assemblies and improves the mechanical property. The composite membrane shows both under-oil superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobic nature, which allows the conversions via in situ modulation of joystick solvents. Based on surface wetting and size-sieving, ultrafine hard nanoparticles dispersing in both hydrophobic organic solvents and water are selectively sieved. In addition, on-demand separation of water-in-oil and oil-in-water microemulsions without and with surfactants as systems containing soft droplets are realized. The smallest cut-off size of ≈3 nm is achieved for both hard and soft emulsions, while separation efficiency maintains during sustained in situ reversible switches.

Polyoxometalate-based frameworks for photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis

Polyoxometalate-based frameworks (POM-based frameworks) are extended structures assembled from metal-oxide cluster units and organic frameworks that simultaneously possess the virtues of POMs and frameworks. They have been attracting immense attention because of their diverse architectures and charming topologies and also due to their probable application prospects in the areas of catalysis, separation, and energy storage. In this review, the recent progress in POM-based frameworks including POM-based metal organic frameworks (PMOFs), POM-based covalent organic frameworks (PCOFs), and POM-based supramolecular frameworks (PSFs) is systematically summarized. The design and construction of a POM-based framework and its application in photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis are introduced, respectively. Finally, our brief outlooks on the current challenges and future development of POM-based frameworks for photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis are provided.

Supramolecular framework membrane for precise sieving of small molecules, nanoparticles and proteins

Synthetic framework materials have been cherished as appealing candidates for separation membranes in daily life and industry, while the challenges still remain in precise control of aperture distribution and separation threshold, mild processing methods, and extensive application aspects. Here, we show a two-dimensional (2D) processible supramolecular framework (SF) by integrating directional organic host-guest motifs and inorganic functional polyanionic clusters. The thickness and flexibility of the obtained 2D SFs are tuned by the solvent modulation to the interlayer interactions, and the optimized SFs with limited layers but micron-sized areas are used to fabricate the sustainable membranes. The uniform nanopores allow the membrane composed of layered SF to exhibit strict size retention for substrates with the rejection value of 3.8 nm, and the separation accuracy within 5 kDa for proteins. Furthermore, the membrane performs high charge selectivity for charged organics, nanoparticles, and proteins, due to the insertion of polyanionic clusters in the framework skeletons. This work displays the extensional separation potentials of self-assembled framework membranes comprising of small-molecules and provides a platform for the preparation of multifunctional framework materials due to the conveniently ionic exchange of the counterions of the polyanionic clusters.

Controllable gelation of coordination nanocages from the physical interactions among surface grafted cholesteryl groups

Coordination nanocage (CNC) incorporated gels have attracted enormous attention for the effective integration of micro-porosity, mechanical flexibility and processability; however, the understanding of their microscopic structure-property relationships remains unclear. Herein, CNCs with 24 surface grafted cholesterol groups are constructed precisely and their gelation can be manipulated upon the tunning of solvent polarities. Optically homogeneous organogels can be formed by introducing a certain amount of bad solvents into the solutions of hairy CNCs and the gelation can be reversed through temperature variation. Suggested from scattering and molecular dynamics studies, the solvophobic interaction-driven aggregation of cholesterol units contributes to the physical crosslinking of CNCs and finally the gelation of CNC solutions. The mechanical strength of the obtained gels is observed to be highly dependent on the flexibility of the organic linkers that bond the cholesterol units on the CNC surface. The effective interaction and dense packing of the cholesterol units in their aggregates highly rely on the degree of freedom of the cholesterol, which is controlled by the flexibility of the organic linkers that bond them on the CNC surface. The observed viscoelastic performance accompanied by the well-controlled mechanical strength of the organogels unambiguously demonstrates the potential for exploiting the synergistic physical correlations to fabricate novel functional materials from CNCs.

Cations Modulated Assembly of Triol-Ligand Modified Cu-Centered Anderson-Evans Polyanions

Counter-cations are essential components of polyoxometalates (POMs), which have a distinct influence on the solubility, stabilization, self-assembly, and functionality of POMs. To investigate the roles of cations in the packing of POMs, as a systematic investigation, herein, a series of triol-ligand covalently modified Cu-centered Anderson-Evans POMs with different counter ions were prepared in an aqueous solution and characterized by various techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Using the strategy of controlling Mo sources, in the presence of triol ligand, NH₄⁺, Cu²⁺ and Na⁺ were introduced successfully into POMs. When (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄ was selected, the counter cations of the produced POMs were ammonium ions, which resulted in the existence of clusters in the discrete state. Additionally, with the modulation of the pH of the solutions, the modified sites of triol ligands on the cluster can be controlled to form δ- or χ-isomers. By applying MoO₃ in the same reaction, Cu²⁺ ions served as linkers to connect triol-ligand modified polyanions into chains. When Na₄Mo₈O₂₆ was employed as the Mo source to react with triol ligands in the presence of CuCl₂, two 2-D networks were obtained with {Na₄(H₂O)₁₄} or {{Na₂(H₂O)₄} sub-clusters as linkers, where the building blocks were δ/δ- and χ/χ-isomers, respectively. The present investigation reveals that the charges, sizes and coordination manners of the counter cations have an obvious influence on the assembled structure of polyanions.

Bottom-up supramolecular assembly in two dimensions

The self-assembly of molecules in two dimensions (2D) is gathering attention from all disciplines across the chemical sciences. Attracted by the interesting properties of two-dimensional inorganic analogues, monomers of different chemical natures are being explored for the assembly of dynamic 2D systems. Although many important discoveries have been already achieved, great challenges are still to be addressed in this field. Hierarchical multicomponent assembly, directional non-covalent growth and internal structural control are a just a few of the examples that will be discussed in this perspective about the exciting present and the bright future of two-dimensional supramolecular assemblies.

Polyoxometalate-Containing Supramolecular Gels

Supramolecular gels are important soft materials with various applications, which are fabricated through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic or host-guest interactions. Introducing functional groups, especially inorganic components, is an efficient strategy to obtain gels with robust architecture and high performance. Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a class of negatively-charged clusters, have defined structures and multiple interaction sites, resulting in their potential as building blocks for constructing POM-containing supramolecular gels. The introduction of POMs into gels not only provides strong driving forces for the formation of gels due to the characteristics of charged cluster and oxygen-rich surface, but also brings new properties sourcing from unique electronic structures of POMs. Though many POM-containing gels have been reported, a comprehensive review is still absent. Herein, the concept of POM-containing gels is discussed, following with the design strategies and driving forces. To better understand the results in the literature, detailed examples, which are classified into several categories based on the types of organic components, are presented to illustrate the gelation process and gel structures. Moreover, applications of POM-containing gels in energy chemistry, sustainable chemistry and other aspects are also reviewed, as well as the future developments of this field. Water-soluble and dispersible porous organic polymers: preparation, functions and applications

Porous organic polymers (POPs) have attracted increasing attention and emerged as a new research area in polymer chemistry. During the past decade, the intense desirability for application in aqueous scenarios has spawned the development of a specific class of POPs, i.e., water-soluble or dispersible porous organic polymers (WS-POPs) that can allow the implementation of porosity-based functions in aqueous media. In this Tutorial Review, aiming at providing a practical guide to this area, we will discuss recent advances in the preparation of WS-POPs through covalent/dynamic covalent, coordination and supramolecular approaches. As a result of their intrinsic and well-defined porosity, diverse topological architectures as well as unique water-processable features, many water-soluble/dispersible POPs have been demonstrated to exhibit potential for various applications, which include drug, DNA and protein delivery, bioimaging, photocatalysis, explosive detection and membrane separation. We will also highlight the related function of the representative structures. Finally, we provide our perspective for the future research, with a focus on the development of new structures and biofunctions.

Self-assembly of propeller-shaped amphiphilic molecules: control over the supramolecular morphology and photoproperties of their aggregates

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect is an important feature for luminescence studies, which can offer a broader range of applications for fluorescent materials. Herein, we report the morphological control and photoproperties of amphipathic propeller-shaped rod-coil molecules based on a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) unit, which restricts the intramolecular rotation and leads to the AIE effect during the self-assembly process. Investigations on the assembly of these molecules have revealed that tetragonal perforated lamella, hexagonal columnar, body-centered tetragonal micellar, and hexagonal close-packed nanostructures were spontaneously formed in the solid-state. In the solution-state, these molecules assemble into nanosheet-like aggregates, bowl-like objects, and spherical nanoparticles, respectively. The morphology of the molecular aggregates can be controlled by modifying the molecular chain length or introducing lateral methyl groups in the coil chain. Notably, these molecular assemblies exhibit strong AIE phenomena in a mixed THF/H2O solution and can be used as smart soft materials due to the restriction of their intramolecular motion.

Strategy for the advanced treatment of simulated tail water of dyeing wastewater based on a short-cut photocatalysis/algal degradation hybrid technology

Refractory organic pollutants in tail water of dyeing wastewater treatment have aroused wide concern. Their efficient and cost-effective removal reduced their threat to public health and ecosystem. Herein, a novel short-cut photocatalysis/algal degradation-based hybrid technology was implemented in efficient removal of methylene blue (MB) in simulated tail water using reliable titanium dioxide and common Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and the mechanisms in processes were emphasized. The treatment efficiency was significantly improved via pretreatment before chemical and biological degradation. MB of 79.71% was concentrated as the adsorption of the modified titanium dioxide and the collection of titanium dioxide by inorganic coagulant. The supernatant with low concentration of MB after coagulation was able to be directly treated by Chlorella pyrenoidosa. MB of 93.7% was degraded and transformed to intermediates in short-cut photocatalysis under visible light in 1 h. The intermediates owning the low biological inhibition were easily further degraded by Chlorella pyrenoidosa in 6 days. Mechanism analysis implied that the modified titanium dioxide was not simple monolayer adsorption, and physical adsorption was dominant. The coagulant played an essential role of charge neutralization in collection of the modified titanium dioxide. The removal of photocatalytic intermediates was divided to fast adsorption of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, low desorption in lag period of algae, and gradual biodegradation that accompanied with the increase of algal cell quantity.
