Ultrafine PdCu Nanoclusters by Ultrasonic-Assisted Reduction on the LDHs/rGO Hybrid with Significantly Enhanced Heck Reactivity

NiFeMn-Layered Double Hydroxides Linked by Graphene as High-Performance Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Currently, precious metal group materials are known as the efficient and widely used oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. The exorbitant prices and scarcity of the precious metals have stimulated scale exploration of alternative non-precious metal catalysts with low-cost and high performance. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a promising precursor to prepare cost-effective and high-performance catalysts because they possess abundant micropores and nitrogen self-doping after pyrolysis, which can accelerate the electron transfer and serve as active sites for efficient OER. Herein, we developed a new highly active NiFeMn-layered double hydroxide (NFM LDH) based electrocatalyst for OER. Through building NFM hydroxide/oxyhydroxide heterojunction and incorporation of conductive graphene, the prepared NFM LDH-based electrocatalyst delivers a low overpotential of 338 mV at current density of 10 mA cm⁻² with a small Tafel slope of 67 mV dec⁻¹, which are superior to those of commercial RuO₂ catalyst for OER. The LDH/OOH heterojunction involves strong interfacial coupling, which modulates the local electronic environment and boosts the kinetics of charge transfer. In addition, the high valence Fe³⁺ and Mn³⁺ species formed after NaOH treatment provide more active sites and promote the Ni²⁺ to higher oxidation states during the O₂ evolution. Moreover, graphene contributes a lot to the reduction of charge transfer resistance. The combining effects have greatly enhanced the catalytic ability for OER, demonstrating that the synthesized NFM LDH/OOH heterojunction with graphene linkage can be practically applied as a high-performance electrocatalyst for oxygen production via water splitting.

Hierarchical-Structured Pd Nanoclusters Catalysts x-PdNCs/CoAl(O)/rGO-T by the Captopril-Capped Pd Cluster Precursor Method for the Highly Efficient 4-Nitrophenol Reduction

Water-soluble captopril-capped atomically precise Pd nanoclusters (Pd₁₇Capt₈ NCs: 1.3 ± 0.5 nm) produced by a simple chemical reduction were supported on preprepared hybrid Co₃Al-layered double hydroxide/reduced graphene oxide (Co₃Al-LDH/rGO) by a pH-adjusted electrostatic adsorption strategy followed by proper calcinations, giving a series of novel catalysts x-PdNCs/CoAl(O)/rGO-T (x (Pd loading) = 0.09, 0.17, 0.43 wt % (ICP), T = 230, 250, 280, 300, 320 °C). The characterization results show that the as-obtained catalysts possess the hierarchical nanosheet array morphology. Pd NCs with a size of ∼1.3 to 1.8 nm are highly distributed at the edge sites of the CoAl(O) nanosheets. All of the x-PdNCs/CoAl(O)/rGO-T catalysts show superior catalytic efficiency for the conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, particularly 0.17-PdNCs/CoAl(O)/rGO-300 possesses the highest performance with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 30 042 h^-1, which is the highest among the reported Pd-based catalysts so far. The superior activity of 0.17-PdNCs/CoAl(O)/rGO-300 can be owing to ultrafine Pd NCs with a clean surface, the strongest PdNCs-Co²⁺-OH(LDH)-rGO three-phase synergy, and the much improved adsorption of the substrate via π-π stacking upon nanosheet array morphology. Meanwhile, 0.17-PdNCs/CoAl(O)/rGO-300 exhibits excellent catalytic activities for various nitroarenes and anionic azo dyes as well as good reusability with the complete reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) within 90 s after 10 successive runs. The present work provides not only a simple and convenient strategy for the synthesis of clean, efficient, and environmentally friendly supported metal nanocluster catalysts but also a new idea for the efficient catalytic degradation of environmental pollutants.

Passivating the pH-Responsive Sites to Configure a Widely pH-Stable Emulsifier for High-Efficiency Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

Widely pH-stable emulsions configured by solid emulsifiers with high chemical stabilities and anti-corrosion properties under strong acid or alkaline conditions are highly sought after for practical and wide application of Pickering interfacial catalysis. Herein, a unique strategy was reported for synthesis of a widely pH-stable and novel emulsifier by passivating the pH-responsive sites on graphene oxide nanoribbon (GONR) surface using ionic liquid (IL). The suitable wettability of GONR-IL was derived from the positive binding energy between IL and water, which ensured the stability of the emulsion in a wide pH range. Benefiting from the passivated surface chemistry of GONR, the emulsion microreactor stabilized by GONR-IL exhibited a remarkable stability over a wide range of pH values. A GONR-IL-supported Pd catalyst stabilized at the toluene-water interface achieved an excellent emulsion catalytic activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation (conversion of 92 %), which was exceedingly higher than that of Pd/GONR (<1 %), Pd/CNTs-IL (51 %), or Pd/GO-IL (8 %).

Layered FeCoNi double hydroxides with tailored surface electronic configurations induced by oxygen and unsaturated metal vacancies for boosting the overall water splitting process

Two-dimensional (2D) layered double hydroxides (LDH) with excellent hydrophilic ability and rapid hydroxyl insertion are regarded as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for overall water splitting to produce hydrogen. However, the electrocatalytic HER/OER activities can be restricted by the inert basal plane due to the poor conductivity, deficient active sites and inferior durability despite there being efficient active sites in the material edge. Thus, capturing many more exposed reactive sites to facilitate the rapid reaction kinetics is a crucial strategy. In this paper, both oxygen and unsaturated metal vacancies with FeCoNi LDH materials are generated through a surface activation approach by pre-covering of fluoride and a post-boronizing process. Such a material is grown on Ni foam to form an F-FeCoNi-Ov LDH/NF electrocatalyst. The activated surface of the electrocatalyst with oxygen vacancies and unsaturated metal sites shows enhanced electroconductivity for regulating the surface electronic structure and optimizing the surface adsorption energy for intermediates during HER/OER processes. As a result, this electrocatalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for both the HER and OER with low overpotentials, small Tafel slopes and long durability. The enhancement mechanism is also studied deeply for fundamental understanding. For performance validation, an F-FeCoNi-Ov LDH/NF∥F-FeCoNi-Ov LDH/NF water splitting cell is fabricated and needs only 1.54 V and 1.81 V to reach current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm^-2, respectively. This work provides a practicable strategy to develop 2D LDH nanomaterials with boosted electrocatalytic activity for sustainable and clean energy storage systems.

Recent Progress of Metal Nanoparticle Catalysts for C–C Bond Forming Reactions

Over the past few decades, the use of transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) in catalysis has attracted much attention and their use in C–C bond forming reactions constitutes one of their most important applications. A huge variety of metal NPs, which have showed high catalytic activity for C–C bond forming reactions, have been developed up to now. Many kinds of stabilizers, such as inorganic materials, magnetically recoverable materials, porous materials, organic–inorganic composites, carbon materials, polymers, and surfactants have been utilized to develop metal NPs catalysts. This review classified and outlined the categories of metal NPs by the type of support.

A new nanomagnetic Pd-Co bimetallic alloy as catalyst in the Mizoroki-Heck and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions in aqueous media

A Pd-Co bimetallic alloy encapsulated in melamine-based dendrimer supported on magnetic nanoparticles denoted as γ-Fe2O3@MBD/Pd-Co was synthesized by a facile co-complexation-reduction method and characterized sufficiently. The catalytic evaluation of γ-Fe2O3@MBD/Pd-Co showed promising results in the Mizoroki-Heck and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions of various iodo-, bromo- and challenging chloroarenes in aqueous media. The synergetic cooperative effect of both Pd and Co and dispersion of the catalyst in water due to the encapsulation of γ-Fe2O3 by melamine-based dendrimer lead to high catalytic performance compared with the monometallic counterparts. The dispersion of the magnetic catalyst also facilitates the recovery and reuse of the catalyst by ten consecutive extraction and final magnetic isolation with no loss of catalytic activity, keeping its structure unaltered.
