Layered Perovskite (CH3NH3)2Pb(SCN)2I2 Single Crystals: Phase Transition and Moisture Stability

Orientation of Thiocyanate Ions Tuning the Electron-Phonon Interactions in Pseudohalide Perovskites

Although the importance of electron-phonon interactions on the optoelectronic properties of perovskites has been well documented, the structural origin of electron-phonon interactions remains largely unexplored. In this study, using pseudohalide perovskites Cs2Pb(SCN)2I2(1-x)Br2x as a model, we have revealed how the orientation of SCN- anions tunes the electron-phonon interactions and the effective charge-carrier mobility by utilizing femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy, supplemented by photoluminescence spectroscopy and femtosecond optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. The coupling between neighboring SCN- anions decreases as the Br content (x) increases but does not have a significant effect on the electron-phonon interactions. In contrast, the orientation angle of SCN- anions has a strong correlation with the electron-phonon interaction and effective charge-carrier mobility, that is, a more parallel orientation of SCN- anions leads to a higher electron-phonon interaction and lower effective charge-carrier mobility. This finding provides a molecule-level understanding of the inorganic lattice structure in tuning electron-phonon interactions and may offer valuable guidance for optimizing the optoelectronic properties of perovskites.

Solvent stimuli-responsive off-on fluorescence induced by synergistic effect of doping and phase transformation for Te4+ doped indium halide perovskite: Giving printable and colorless ink for information encryption and decryption

Since traditional fluorescent materials are too easily observed by the eyes just under the UV light, off-on fluorescent materials are explored as the new generation of fluorescent labels. In the "off" state, such off-on fluorescent labels cannot be observed by naked eyes under either natural light or UV light. Only after a specific decryption treatment to make the fluorescent materials turning into the "on" state, the fluorescent labels can be observed under the UV light. Up to now, it is still a challenge to prepare fluorescent inks with aforementioned ideal properties by using halide perovskite materials. Herein, we reported the first example of Te⁴⁺ doped indium halide perovskite inks with both off-on fluorescence under solvent stimuli and invisible ink color by the naked eyes. The synergistic effect of doping/undoping of Te⁴⁺ together with the reversible phase transformation between Cs₂InCl₅(H₂O) and Cs₃InCl₆ under solvent stimuli is key for the off-on fluorescence of crystals. Under acid solvent, the substitutional doping of Te⁴⁺ during the process of phase transformation from Cs₃InCl₆ to Cs₂InCl₅(H₂O):Te⁴⁺ gives rise to "turning-on" orange emission from Te-induced self-trap emission (STE). Under the stimuli of methanol, the dissolution of Te⁴⁺ from the crystals destroys the structure of Te⁴⁺ in ligand-field and results in "turning-off" Te-induced emission during the process of phase transformation from Cs₂InCl₅(H₂O):Te⁴⁺ to Cs₃InCl₆. On the basis of the Te⁴⁺ doped indium halide perovskite, printable and colorless ink can be prepared for the confidential information encryption and decryption. Since the mixture of Cs₃InCl₆ crystals and TeCl₄ have no absorption in visible light scope, the printed encrypted information by such off-state fluorescent ink is colorless and invisible by the naked eyes under either ambient light or UV light. After decryption by acid solvent stimuli, the resulted Cs₂InCl₅(H₂O):Te⁴⁺ doping crystals have a large Stokes shift with absorption below 450 nm from the excitation of Te⁴⁺ in ligand-field and emission around 570 nm from Te-induced STE. It makes the decryption information still colorless and invisible by the naked eyes under the ambient light but visible and readable under the UV light. In comparison to traditional undoped CsPbBr₃/CsPb₂Br₅ perovskites with small Stokes shift and eye-visible ink color, the current colorless Te⁴⁺doped indium halide perovskites are no doubt providing better security level for both encrypted and decrypted information.

(C4H10NO)PbX3 (X = Cl, Br): Design of Two Lead Halide Perovskite Crystals with Moderate Nonlinear Optical Properties

Introducing electronegative species into organic constituents was considered to be one effective strategy for adjusting crystal symmetry and designing new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. By substitution of C4 in piperidine (C₅H₁₁N) with electronegative oxygen, organic morpholine (C₄H₉NO) was easily obtained. Therefore, to design NLO crystals, we focused on combinations of stereochemically active lone-pair (SCALP) cation (Pb²⁺)-based chloride and bromide with morpholine molecules. In this work, two lead halide hybrid perovskite (C₄H₁₀NO)PbX₃ (X = Cl, Br, abbreviated as MPbCl₃ and MPbBr₃, respectively) single crystals with moderate nonlinear optical properties were synthesized by a slow evaporation method. The two title crystals belong to orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2₁ with one-dimensional (1D) chainlike perovskite structures. Theoretical calculations revealed that the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses mainly originate from distorted {PbX₆} octahedrons of the inorganic framework. Remarkably, moderate phase-matching SHG effects of about 0.70 and 0.81 times KH₂PO₄, large birefringences of 0.098 and 0.111 at 1064 nm, and large laser damage thresholds (LDTs) of 19.94 and 46.82 MW/cm² were estimated for MPbCl₃ and MPbBr₃, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for new purpose-designed hybrid NLO crystals by adjustment and modulation of chemical modification.

All-Inorganic Perovskite Single Crystals for Optoelectronic Detection

Due to their many varieties of excellent optoelectric properties, perovskites have attracted large numbers of researchers in the past few years. For the hybrid perovskites, a long diffusion length, long carrier lifetime, and high μτ product are particularly noticeable. However, some disadvantages, including high toxicity and instability, restrict their further large-scale application. By contrast, all-inorganic perovskites not only have remarkable optoelectric properties but also feature high structure stability due to the lack of organic compositions. Benefiting from these, all-inorganic perovskites have been extensively explored and studied. Compared with the thin film type, all-inorganic perovskite single crystals (PSCs) with fewer grain boundaries and crystalline defects have better optoelectric properties. Nevertheless, it is important to note that only a few reports to date have presented a summary of all-inorganic PSCs. In this review, we firstly make a summary and propose a classification method according to the crystal structure. Then, based on the structure classification, we introduce several representative materials and focus on their corresponding growth methods. Finally, applications for detectors of all-inorganic PSCs are listed and summarized. At the end of the review, based on the current research situation and trends, some perspectives and advice are proposed.

Thermochromism Perovskite (COOH(CH2)3NH3)2PbI4 Crystals: Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Phase Transition and Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Emission

As a potential multifunctional phase transition material, the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Here, we report the single-crystal to single-crystal phase transition and excitation-wavelength-dependent emission (EDE) of layered perovskite (COOH(CH₂)₃NH₃)₂PbI₄. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that the crystal structure changes from layered Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) at 302 K to "X" network composed of face-sharing and corner-sharing [PbX₆]^4- octahedra at 425 K. The material exhibits thermochromic change from orange to yellow at higher temperature. Considering the thermochromism of the material, we apply it for anticounterfeiting and information encryption. The material exhibits EDE properties with a fluorescence color changing from green to red upon 420 and 546 nm excitation, respectively. Time-dependent density functional theory indicated that this phenomenon is mainly related to the laser-induced crystal structural transfer. Our research shows that the (COOH(CH₂)₃NH₃)₂PbI₄ crystal has a potential application for multifunctional devices.

Temperature-induced structural transition in an organic–inorganic hybrid layered perovskite (MA)2PbI2−xBrx(SCN)2

A temperature-induced structural phase transition is reported in layered hybrid perovskite (MA)2PbI2−xBrx(SCN)2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.2). The observed transition temperature decreases with Br substitution, suggesting a weakening of bonding interaction between the molecular ions.

A DFT study on the stability and optoelectronic properties of Pb/Sn/Ge-based MA2B(SCN)2I2 perovskites

Sn substitution and Sn doping reduce the band gap of MA2Pb(SCN)2I2 perovskites and make the absorption spectrum red-shifted.

Low-Dimensional Hybrid Lead Iodide Perovskites Single Crystals via Bifunctional Amino Acid Cross-Linkage: Structural Diversity and Properties Controllability

Three-dimensional perovskite AMX₃ has great potential in photoelectric applications, but the poor stability is a major problem that restricts its practical application. The emergence of lower dimensional perovskite solves this problem. Here, we have synthesized a group of novel low-dimensional perovskites with diverse structures. Different amino acids were incorporated in the perovskite cage. The formulas of the compounds are (A')_mPbI_m+2 (A' = COOH(CH₂)_nNH₂, n = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9). These families of materials demonstrate structure-related stability, tunable bandgap, and different photoluminescence. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that the five materials employ different structure types varying from edge-sharing structures to face- and corner-sharing Pb/I structures by adjusting the number of C atoms in organic cations, and the level of [PbI₆]^4- octahedral distortion was also identified. The film prepared using these materials with longer carbon chains (n = 5, 7, 9) showed better stability, and they did not decompose within one year at 75% RH, 40 °C. The bifunctional organic ions containing carboxyl groups as spacer cations will form additional hydrogen bonding between perovskite layers, resulting in higher stability of the material. The band gaps of these materials vary from 2.19 to 2.6 eV depending on the octahedral connection mode and [PbI₆]^4- octahedral distortion level, density functional theory calculations (DFT) are consistent with our experimental trends and suggest that the face-sharing structure has the maximum band gap due to its flatter electron band structure. Bright green fluorescence was observed in (COOH(CH₂)₇NH₃)₂PbI₄ and (COOH(CH₂)₉NH₃)₂PbI₄ when excited by 365 nm UV light. A thorough comprehension of the structure-property relationships is of great significance for further practical applications of perovskites.

Structure and Optical Properties of Layered Perovskite (MA)2PbI2-xBrx(SCN)2 (0 ≤ x < 1.6)

The layered perovskite (MA)₂PbI₂(SCN)₂ (MA = CH₃NH₃⁺) is a member of an emerging series of compounds derived from hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. Here, we successfully synthesized (MA)₂PbI_2-xBr_x(SCN)₂ (0 ≤ x < 1.6) by using a solid-state reaction. Despite smaller bromide substitution for iodine, 1% linear expansion along the a axis was observed at x ∼ 0.4 due to a change of the orientation of the SCN^- anions. Diffuse reflectance spectra reveal that the optical band gap increases by the bromide substitution, which is supported by the DFT calculations. Curiously, bromine-rich compounds where x ≥ 0.8 are light sensitive, leading to partial decomposition after ∼24 h. This study demonstrates that the layered perovskite (MA)₂PbI₂(SCN)₂ tolerates a wide range of bromide substitution toward tuning the band gap energy.

Layered hybrid lead perovskite single crystals: phase transformations and tunable optical properties
