Sub-nanoscaled Metal Oxide Cluster-Integrated Polymer Network for Quasi-Homogeneous Catalysis

Cluster-Cation Pairs Mediated Assembly of Subnanometer Polyoxometalates Superstructures

Superstructures assembled by subnanometer polyoxometalate (POM) clusters are interesting for their attractive structures and excellent properties. However, the complex interactions between clusters and cations make it challenging to control the assembly of POM clusters at the subnanometer scale. Here, 20 cluster-assembled superstructures built by two types of MP2W17O61 (M = La-Lu) clusters are successfully synthesized. The precise structures and configurations of the subnanostructures, including nanowires, tetragonal nanosheets, and rectangular nanosheets, are characterized and presented. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that the difference in interactions of POM clusters and cations leads to the formation of distinct superstructures. Two mechanisms of superstructure formation are proposed. Furthermore, the EuP2W17 nanosheet behaves with a high Faradaic efficiency of 90.2% and selectivity of 87.3% for glycolic acid in the electrocatalytic ethylene glycol oxidation reaction, which is much higher than that of isolated cluster components. This work connects the cluster topologies and cluster-cation pairs to the superstructures of cluster assemblies, providing general guidelines for the supramolecular self-assembly of POM clusters.

Functional Molecular Granular Materials: Advances and Perspectives

Molecular granular materials (MGMs) are constructed with sub-nanoscale molecular clusters (MCs) as the building units and they have recently been observed to possess enriched functionalities distinct from granular materials of colloid nanoparticles. Herein, the birth and recent research advances in MGMs are summarized with the topics covering the precise synthesis of MC assemblies with target topologies, the hierarchical relaxation dynamics and tuneable viscoelasticity, impact-resistant capacity, and proton conductivity performance. The extremely small size of MC renders them two features: bulk diffusive dynamics with energy scale close to thermal fluctuation energy and the dominant volume fraction of surface structures. This finally leads to the hierarchical relaxation dynamics and broadly tuneable viscoelasticity of MGMs although the structural units are with small sizes and low M_w . Therefore, MGMs have been applied as impact resistant materials and proton conductors for the highly tuneable relaxation dynamics.

Polyoxovanadate-Based Cyclomatrix Polyphosphazene Microspheres as Efficient Heterogeneous Catalysts for the Selective Oxidation and Desulfurization of Sulfides

The [V₆O₁₃]^2- cluster is successfully immobilized to the polymeric framework of cyclomatrix polyphosphazene via the facile precipitation polymerization between the phenol group symmetrically modified [V₆O₁₃]^2- and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene. The structure of the as-prepared polyoxometalate-containing polyphosphazene (HCCP-V) was characterized by FT-IR, XPS, TGA, BET, as well as SEM and zeta potential. The presence of a rigid polyoxometalate cluster not only supports the porous structure of the polymeric framework but also provides an improved catalytic oxidation property. By using H₂O₂ as an oxidant, the as-prepared HCCP-V exhibited improved catalytic oxidation activity toward MPS, DBT, and CEES, which can achieve as high as 99% conversion. More importantly, the immobilization of POMs in the network of cyclomatrix polyphosphazene also provides better recyclability and stability of the heterogeneous catalyst.

Bacterial hyperpolarization modulated by polyoxometalates for solutions of antibiotic resistance

Developing strategies against the antibiotic resistance is a major global challenge for public health. Here, we report the synergy of the combination of Preyssler-type polyoxometalates (POMs) ([NaP5W30O110]14- or [AgP5W30O110]14-) and ribosome-targeting antibiotics for high antibacterial efficiency with low risk of antibiotic resistance. Due to their ultra-small sizes and active surface ligands, POM anions show strong affinity to bacterial cell membrane and impose hyperpolarization of the bacterial cells as well as the decrease of Mg2+ influx by blocking Mg2+ transporters, which finally lead to the structural perturbations of ribosomes and instability of bacterial structures. The bacterial growth can, therefore, be regulated by the presence of POMs: a fraction of Bacillus subtilis shifted to a 'dormant', slow-growing cellular state (an extended lag phase) upon the application of subinhibitory concentration of POMs. An approach to combat antibiotic resistant bacteria by applying POMs at their early growth phase followed by antibiotic exposure is validated, and its high efficiency for bacterial control is confirmed.
