Abstract
A highly sensitive and selective fluorescence method has been conducted for the detection of Hg2+ based on aminophenylboronic acid-modified carboxyl magnetic beads (CMB@APBA) and CRISPR/Cas12a system mediated by glyoxal caged nucleic acid (gcDNA). As a bi-functional DNA linker, gcDNA offers advantages of simultaneous recognition by boronic acid and complementary DNA/RNA. Under acidic condition, gcDNA can be immobilized on CMB@APBA through the formation of borate ester bond. The formed boric acid-esterified gcDNA can further bind with complementary CRISPR RNA through A-T base pairing to activate Cas12a with kcat/Km ratio of 3.4 × 107 s-1 M-1, allowing for amplified signal. Hg2+ can specifically combine with CMB@APBA, resulting in the release of gcDNA from CMB@APBA and the following inhibition on the activation of CRISPR/Cas12a system around magnetic bead. Under optimal conditions, the method exhibits a linear range from 20 to 250 nM, with a detection limit of 2.72 nM. The proposed method can detect Hg2+ in milk and tea beverages, providing a great significance for on-site monitoring of Hg2+ contamination in food.

Abstract
The use of engineered nanoparticles in the environment and human life has increased in the last 20 years. The risk assessment concerning application of nanomaterials in biological systems requires their thorough characterization. Understanding the correlations between physicochemical properties of nanoparticles concerning not only the size, particle size distribution, number concentration, degree of aggregation, or agglomeration but also solubility, stability, binding affinity, surface activity, chemical composition, and nanoparticle synthesis yield allows their reliable characterization. Thus, to find the structure-function/property relationship of nanoparticles, multifaceted characterization approach based on more than one analytical technique is required. On the other hand, the increasing demand for identification and characterization of nanomaterials has contributed to the continuous development of spectrometric techniques which enables for their qualitative and quantitative analysis in complex matrices giving reproducible and reliable results. This review is aimed at providing a discussion concerning four main aspects of nanoparticle characterization: nanoparticle synthesis yield, particle size and number concentration, elemental and isotopic composition of nanoparticles, and their surface properties. The conventional and non-conventional spectrometric techniques such as spectrophotometry UV-Vis, mass spectrometric techniques working in conventional and single-particle mode, or those based on optical emission detection systems are described with special emphasis paid on their advantages and drawbacks. The application and recent advances of these methods are also comprehensively reviewed and critically discussed.

Abstract
Since the excess exposure to F- may induce serious issues to human health, the effective adsorption and sensitive detection of F- is essential. Therefore, carbon dots (CDs) capped CeO2 (CeO2@CDs) was synthesized via hydrothermal treatment of tannic acid and CeCl3. Due to abundant phenolic hydroxyl are reserved and excellent hydrophilicity, CeO2@CDs possess high F- adsorption capacity. The partition coefficient parameters (PC) are determined to be 2.65 L/g, which is comparable with previous work. The kinetics results and adsorption isotherm are consistent with pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model, respectively, indicating the chemisorption dominate the adsorption, mainly via the ion exchange between hydroxyl and F-. Since phenolic hydroxyl existed on the CeO2@CDs, synergetic effect of CDs and CeO2 contribute to superior ROS eliminating capacity, even at acidic conditions. Moreover, due to the ROS scavenging of CeO2 @CDs abilities can be potentiated by F-, colorimetric detection of F- can be realized via horseradish peroxidase as an indicator. The linear range is 0.3-2.1 mM with limit of detection is 0.13 mg/L. The current results imply that CeO2@CDs possess potential in both efficient removal and sensitive detection of F- related contamination issues and elucidation of development to address other anions related issues.

Abstract
In this work, Cu2Se/Cu membranes (CSMs) of hierarchical pores were fabricated via chemical dissolution of Cu and Se followed by redeposition of cuprous selenide (Cu2Se) on copper membranes (CMs), and applied for adsorption/removal/separation of Hg(II) among a variety of interfering metal ions. The CSM demonstrates the best comprehensive performance among previous Hg(II) adsorption membranes, having high selectivity (KHg/M = 2.9 × 104-3.0 × 105), high efficiency (>99%, 5 s to 3 min), high adsorption capacity (505 mg/g), and high flux (2.0 × 106 L m-2 h-1). Meanwhile, effects of Hg(II) concentration, flow rate, and the number of membrane layers and adsorption cycles were also investigated on the removal of Hg(II). Moreover, a Cu2Se/Cu membrane-plasma (CSM-p) with superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity was prepared on the basis of CSM, and simultaneous removal of Hg(II) and oil was realized by using CSM and CSM-p in combination. This work not only provides a new reference for design of highly selective, efficient metal ion adsorption/enrichment/separation materials but also presents a novel approach to the removal/enrichment/separation of multiple complex contaminants by the combination of different functional membranes.

Abstract
Developing non-noble metal, even metal-free chemical sensors for the detection of toxic heavy metal ions is significantly desirable for economically and environmentally sustainable application but has heretofore remained elusive. Herein, a L-cysteine functionalized graphene oxide nanosheet (CGO) nanoarchitectonics, greenly synthesized by a very simple method at room temperature, was utilized to realize the simultaneous enrichment and colorimetric detection of trace mercury ions (Hg2+). It was discovered that CGO, as a nanozyme mimic exhibited greatly enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity than the pristine graphene oxide. By exploring the interactions of CGO nanozyme with colorimetric substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and target Hg2+ ions, we found that the sensing principle was based mainly on the competitive adsorption between Hg2+ ions and TMB over CGO. The pre-capture of Hg2+ ions hindered the TMB binding on CGO, resulting in the promoted oxidation of TMB by H2O2 to produce more colored oxidation products, from which the colorimetric sensing of Hg2+ was realized with a good detection effect on 5 μg L-1 solution. As an enrichment-sensing integration platform, this metal-free sensor is cost-effective and sensitive, and presents considerable anti-interference ability over other metal ions. Overall, this work not only expands the application of graphene-based materials in colorimetric detection but also provides a general sensing principle to construct highly sensitive sensors.

Abstract
Defect rich molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets were hydrothermally synthesized and their potential for ultrasound assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction of trace Hg(ii) ions was assessed. Ultrasonic dispersion allows the MoS2 nanosheets to chelate rapidly and evenly with Hg(ii) ions and results in improving the precision and minimizing the extraction time. The multiple defect rich surface was characterized by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The surface charge of intrinsically sulfur rich MoS2 nanosheets and their elemental composition was characterized by zeta potential measurements, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The cracks and holes on the basal planes of MoS2 led to diffusion of the Hg(ii) ions into the interior channels. Inner-sphere chelation along with outer-sphere electrostatic interaction were the proposed mechanism for the Hg(ii) adsorption onto the MoS2 surface. The experimental data showed good selectivity of MoS2 nanosheets towards Hg(ii) adsorption. The systematic and constant errors of the proposed method were ruled out by the analysis of the Standard Reference Material (>95% recovery with <5% RSD). The Student's t-test values for the analyzed Standard Reference Material were found to be less than the critical Student's t value at 95% confidence level. The limit of detection (3S) was found to be 0.01 ng mL−1. The MoS2 nanosheets were successfully employed for the analysis of Hg(ii) in environmental water samples.
