Stable and Catalytically Active Shape-Engineered Cerium Oxide Nanorods by Controlled Doping of Aluminum Cations

CeO2 nanorods supported CuOx-RuOx bimetallic catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation

Bimetallic catalysts often outperform monometallic catalysts due to changeable structural orientation, synergistic effects, and integration of two different metal or metal oxide properties. Here, a series of CeO2 nanorods (NR) supported bimetallic CuOx and RuOx catalysts (Cu: Ru ratios of 9:1, 7:3, and 5:5) were prepared using a wet impregnation method. In situ DRIFTS, H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO temperature programmed desorption (CO-TPD), and other characterization techniques were used to investigate the effect of the Cu:Ru ratio on the activity of low-temperature CO oxidation. Among three catalysts, CeO2 NR supported 7 wt% Cu-3 wt% Ru catalyst after a reduction activation treatment showed the best performance with 100 % CO conversion at 166 °C and the lowest activation energy of 18.37 kJ mol-1. Raman and XPS profiles revealed that the origin of the superior performance is at least partially related to the high surface oxygen vacancy concentration and other distinct oxygen species (physi-/chemi-sorbed oxygen and bulk lattice oxygen), leading to outstanding adsorption and oxidation property of CO.

Nanoceria: an innovative strategy for cancer treatment

Nanoceria or cerium oxide nanoparticles characterised by the co-existing of Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺ that allows self-regenerative, redox-responsive dual-catalytic activities, have attracted interest as an innovative approach to treating cancer. Depending on surface characteristics and immediate environment, nanoceria exerts either anti- or pro-oxidative effects which regulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in biological systems. Nanoceria mimics ROS-related enzymes that protect normal cells at physiological pH from oxidative stress and induce ROS production in the slightly acidic tumour microenvironment to trigger cancer cell death. Nanoceria as nanozymes also generates molecular oxygen that relieves tumour hypoxia, leading to tumour cell sensitisation to improve therapeutic outcomes of photodynamic (PDT), photothermal (PTT) and radiation (RT), targeted and chemotherapies. Nanoceria has been engineered as a nanocarrier to improve drug delivery or in combination with other drugs to produce synergistic anti-cancer effects. Despite reported preclinical successes, there are still knowledge gaps arising from the inadequate number of studies reporting findings based on physiologically relevant disease models that accurately represent the complexities of cancer. This review discusses the dual-catalytic activities of nanoceria responding to pH and oxygen tension gradient in tumour microenvironment, highlights the recent nanoceria-based platforms reported to be feasible direct and indirect anti-cancer agents with protective effects on healthy tissues, and finally addresses the challenges in clinical translation of nanoceria based therapeutics.

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Decorated Indium Hydroxide Nanocomposite: Synthesis, Characterization and Its Photocatalytic Activity

A simple and scalable liquid-based method was developed to produce a nanocomposite photocatalyst which was comprised of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (4-5 nm) decorated indium hydroxide nanorods (mean width 33 nm and average aspect ratio 2-3). The nanocomposite was produced at 25 ℃ in water via a hydroxide-induced co-precipitation ensued by a cathodic reduction during which the non-magnetic Fe(OH)3 intermediate was reduced to magnetic Fe3O4 at 20 V within 1 h. The incorporation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles served to bestow magnetic recoverability to the photocatalyst and helped enhance visible light absorption simultaneously. Interestingly, the addition of Fe3+ led to the formation of In(OH)3 nanorods rather than the commonly observed nanocubes. In comparison to the In(OH)3 system having a band gap of 4.60 eV), the band gap of the Fe3O4/In(OH)3 nanocomposite produced was determined to be 2.85 eV using the Tauc’s plot method. The effective reduction in band gap is expected to allow better absorption of visible light which in turns should help boost its photocatalytic performance. The Fe3O4/In(OH)3 nanocomposite was structurally characterized using a combination of PXRD, FESEM, EDS, and TEM and its paramagnetic property was proven with a positive mass susceptibility measured to be 1.30´10−5 cm3.g−1. Under visible light, a photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 83% was recorded within 1 hr for the nanocomposite using methylene blue as a dye. The photocatalytically-active Fe3O4/In(OH)3 should have good potential in visible-light driven waste water degradation once further optimized. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group.
