Photochromism and Fluorescence Switch of Furan-Containing Tetraarylethene Luminogens with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Photocontrolled Interface-Involved Applications

Multiple photofluorochromic luminogens via catalyst-free alkene oxidative cleavage photoreaction for dynamic 4D codes encryption

Controllable photofluorochromic systems with high contrast and multicolor in both solutions and solid states are ideal candidates for the development of dynamic artificial intelligence. However, it is still challenging to realize multiple photochromism within one single molecule, not to mention good controllability. Herein, we report an aggregation-induced emission luminogen TPE-2MO2NT that undergoes oxidation cleavage upon light irradiation and is accompanied by tunable multicolor emission from orange to blue with time-dependence. The photocleavage mechanism revealed that the self-generation of reactive oxidants driving the catalyst-free oxidative cleavage process. A comprehensive analysis of TPE-2MO2NT and other comparative molecules demonstrates that the TPE-2MO2NT molecular scaffold can be easily modified and extended. Further, the multicolor microenvironmental controllability of TPE-2MO2NT photoreaction within polymer matrices enables the fabrication of dynamic fluorescence images and 4D information codes, providing strategies for advanced controllable information encryption.

Manipulation of aurophilicity in constructed clusters of gold(I) complexes with boosted luminescence and smart responsiveness

High-performance luminescent gold(I) complexes have attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in various fields, but their construction is a significantly challenging task. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of novel dinuclear gold(I) complexes 1-4 based on 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene and 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene frameworks, where para-substitutions of benzene ring were employed for comparison and bulky t-butyl groups were introduced into carbazole ligands to assist flexibly regulating the aurophilicity. Among them, the structure of complex 1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and all the complexes exhibited typical aggregation-induced emission characteristics. Due to the construction of intramolecular aurophilicity and the formation of molecular clusters, noticeable enhancement of the luminescent efficiency was achieved for the core complex 1. Together with the introduction of flexible t-butyl groups, good responsiveness towards external mechanical force and solvent vapors were also realized. Moreover, the specific bioimaging ability of complex 1 towards cancer cells was demonstrated. Thus, this work presents the crucial capability of aurophilic manipulation in tuning the luminescence and smart behaviors of gold complexes, and it will open a new route to developing high-performance luminescent materials.

Photoinduced fluorescence modulation through controllable intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition in single molecules and molecular aggregates

We report a general molecular design strategy of spatial proximity, which allows intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction to take place in both single molecules and molecular aggregates. Sharply contrasting photoinduced fluorescence changes in solution and in the solid state were found and attributed to the aggregation-induced quenching property of the monomers and the aggregation-induced emission nature of the photodimers.

Theoretical Study of the Photocyclization Reaction-Induced Dual Aggregation-Induced Emission Phenomenon

Photochromic molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects are of great value and prospective in various practical applications. To explore its inherent mechanism, the open isomer ap-BBTE and the closed isomer c-BBTE were chosen to perform the theoretical calculation using the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics model combined with thermal vibration correlation function formalism. The calculations show that the photocyclization (PC) reaction from ap-BBTE to c-BBTE facilitates an improvement in the AIE effect. It is found that the fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF) enhancement of ap-BBTE is attributed to the restriction of the low-frequency rotational motion of the benzothiophene moiety and the high-frequency stretching vibrations of the C-C bond between the benzothiophene and benzylbis(thiadiazole) vinyl groups after aggregation. For c-BBTE, the increase in ΦF upon aggregation is mainly due to the suppression of the high-frequency stretching vibration of the C-C bond between the benzothiophene and the benzobis(thiadiazole) vinyl groups. In addition, the AIE effect was also enhanced from ap-BBTE to c-BBTE, which is consistent with the experimental phenomenon. The corresponding emission spectrum red-shifted from ap-BBTE to c-BBTE in both dilute solution and the crystalline state due to the improved intramolecular conjugation of c-BBTE. Moreover, the PC reaction from ap-BBTE to c-BBTE easily occurs in an excited state with a low energy barrier transition state by forming a C-C bond between benzothiophene groups effectively in dilute solution. Our calculations provide theoretical guidance for the further rational design of efficient AIE luminogens.

Photo-Responsive Dynamic Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Materials Based on a Functional Unit Combination Strategy

A rational molecular design strategy facilitates the development of a purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) material system with precisely regulated luminescence properties, which surely promotes its functional integration and intelligent application. Here, a functional unit combination strategy is proposed to design novel RTP molecules combining a folding unit with diverse luminescent cores. The different luminescent cores are mainly responsible for tunable RTP properties, while the folding unit contributes to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) enhancement, which makes the RTP material design as workable as the building block principle. By this strategy, a series of color/lifetime-tunable RTP materials is achieved with unique photo-responsive RTP enhancement when subjected to UV irradiation, which expands their application scenarios in reusable privacy tags, advanced "4D" encryption, and phase separation analysis of blended polymers. This work suggests a simple and effective strategy to design purely organic RTP materials with tunable color and lifetime, and also provides new application options for photo-responsive dynamic RTP materials.

Photoactivation of Solid-State Fluorescence through Controllable Intermolecular [2+2] Photodimerization

Intermolecular [2+2] photodimerization provides a distinctive approach to construct photoresponsive fluorescent materials in a manner of switching on solid-state fluorescence. Herein, we report efficient photoactivation of bright solid-state fluorescence based on controllable intermolecular [2+2] photodimerization reaction of benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide (BTO) derivatives, which provides a simple and effective way to construct smart photoresponsive solid-state fluorescent materials. Rational choice of substituents in BTO molecular skeleton enables them to efficiently undergo photodimerization through regulating molecular stacking in crystal, and also leads to photoactivation of solid-state fluorescence due to the generation of brightly fluorescent photodimers. This intermolecular photodimerization reaction also offers an effective method to synthesize photostable AIEgens with purely through-space conjugation.

Immobilization of Strontium Aluminate into Recycled Polycarbonate Plastics towards an Afterglow and Photochromic Smart Window

A transparent smart window made of recycled polycarbonate plastic (PCP) waste was prepared and immobilized with strontium aluminate phosphor nanoparticles (SAPN). It has afterglow emission, super-hydrophobicity, durability, photostability, good mechanical properties, ultraviolet protection, and high optical transmittance. To create an afterglow emission polycarbonate smart window (SAPN@PCP), recycled polycarbonate waste was integrated with various concentrations of SAPN (15-52 nm). SAP micro-scale powder was made using the solid-state high temperature method. The SAP nanoparticles were produced using the top-down method. To create a colorless plastic bulk, recycled polycarbonate waste was inserted into a hot bath. This colorless plastic was thoroughly combined with SAPN and cast to create an afterglow luminous smart window. To investigate its photoluminescence properties, spectrum profiles of excitation and emission were measured. According to the luminescence parameters, the phosphorescent colorless polycarbonate plates displayed a change in color to strong green under UV illumination and greenish-yellow in a dark box. The afterglow polycarbonate smart window displayed two emission peaks at 496 and 526 nm, and an absorption wavelength of 373 nm. Upon increasing the SAPN ratio, the hydrophobic activity, hardness, photostability, and UV protection were improved. Luminescent polycarbonate substrates with lower SAPN ratio demonstrated rapid and reversible fluorescence under UV light, while the higher SAPN content in the luminous polycarbonate substrates showed afterglow.

Photoluminescent and photochromic smart window from recycled polyester reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals

Smart windows with long-persistent phosphorescence, UV protection, high transparency, and high rigidity were developed by easily immobilizing varying ratios of lanthanide-activated aluminate phosphor nanoscale particles within a composite of recycled polyester/cellulose nanocrystals (RPET/CNC). Cellulose nanocrystals were prepared from rice straw waste. Cellulose nanocrystals were used at low concentration as both crosslinker and drier to improve both transparency and hardness. The phosphor nanoscale particles must be distributed into the recycled polyester/cellulose nanocrystals composite bulk without agglomeration in order to produce transparent RPET/CNC substrates. Photoluminescence characteristics were also studied by using spectroscopic profiles of excitation/emission and decay/lifetime. The hardness efficiency was also examined. This transparent recycled polyester waste/cellulose nanocrystals nanocomposite smart window has been shown to change color under UV light to strong green and to greenish-yellow when it is dark, as proved by CIE Lab color parameters. It was found that the afterglow RPET/CNC smart window had phosphorescence intensities of 428, 493 and 523 nm upon excitation at 368 nm. There were evidences of improved UV shielding, photostability, and hydrophobic activity. In the presence of low phosphor ratio, the luminescent RPET/CNC substrates showed quick and reversible fluorescent photochromic activity when exposed to UV radiation.

Color-switchable and photoluminescent poly (vinyl chloride) for multifunctional smart applications

Recycled poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) waste was used to prepare transparent material with long-lasting phosphorescence, photochromic activity, hydrophobicity, strong optical transmission, ultraviolet (UV) protection, and stiffness. Lanthanide-activated aluminate (LaA) microparticles were prepared via the high temperature solid state procedure, which were subjected to the top-down grinding technology to afford LaA nanoparticles (LaAN). Laminated poly (vinyl chloride) bottles were shredded into a transparent plastic matrix, which was combined with LaAN and drop-casted to produce smart materials for a variety of applications. Smart window and photochromic film for smart packaging can be made from recycled poly (vinyl chloride) waste by immobilizing it with various ratios of LaAN. Long-lasting phosphorescent translucent poly (vinyl chloride) smart window and films need LaAN to be evenly dispersed in PVC without clumping. Different analytical methods were employed to assess the materials' morphological structure and chemical composition. Photoluminescence and decay spectra were all employed to investigate the luminescence characteristics. In addition, the mechanical performance was studied. According to CIE Lab (Commission Internationale de L'éclairage) color measurements, this transparent PVC smart material becomes a bright green under UV rays and turns a greenish-yellow in the dark. The PVC luminescence was observed to exhibit an apparent emission bands at 429 and 513 nm when excited at 367 nm. Improvements have been monitored in the UV shielding and hydrophobicity with increasing the phosphor concentration. LaAN-immobilized PVC exhibited reversible photochromism. The present approach can be applied for a variety of applications, such as anticounterfeiting films for smart packaging, smart window, and warning lightening marks.

Thermosensitive Microgels Containing AIEgens: Enhanced Luminescence and Distinctive Photochromism for Dynamic Anticounterfeiting

The proposal of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect shines a light on the practical application of luminescent materials. The AIE-active luminescence microgels (TPEC MGs) with photo-induced color-changing behavior were developed by integrating positively charged AIE luminogens (AIEgens) into the anionic network of microgels, where AIEgens of TPEC were obtained from the quaternization reaction between tetra-(4-pyridylphenyl)ethylene (TPE-4Py) and 7-(6-bromohexyloxy)-coumarin. The aqueous suspensions of TPEC MGs exhibit a significant AIE effect following the enhancement of quantum yield. In addition, further increase in fluorescence intensity and blueshift occur at elevated temperatures due to the collapse of microgels. The distinctive photochromic behavior of TPEC MGs was observed, which presents as the transition from orange-yellow to blue-green color under UV irradiation, which is different from TPEC in good organic solvents. The phenomenon of color changing can be ascribed to the competition between photodimerization of the coumarin part and photocyclization of TPE-4Py in TPEC. The photochromic TPEC MG aqueous suspensions can be conducted as aqueous microgel inks for information display, encryption, and dynamic anticounterfeiting.

Background color dependent photonic multilayer films for anti-counterfeiting labeling

A new concept for anti-counterfeiting security films that utilize the humidity from human breath to reveal a QR code on color-tunable one-dimensional (1D) PC films is presented. The 1D PC film was fabricated on a transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate via sequential alternate layer deposition of photo-crosslinkable poly(2-vinylnaphthalene-co-benzophenone acrylate) (P(2VN-co-BPA)) and quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-benzophenone acrylate) (P(4VP-co-BPA)) (P4QP-51%). The films exhibited remarkable color transitions with reliable reversibility and reproducibility. Films placed on a black background exhibited the full visible spectrum color in a high humidity environment. Additionally, films placed on a white background displayed three different composite colors, including yellow, magenta, and cyan. These films with vivid color transitions in a high humidity environment can be applied as anti-counterfeiting films. A hidden QR code was also laser printed on the initial PC film to enhance the film's anti-counterfeiting security capabilities. These colorimetric 1D PC films can be used as anti-counterfeiting labels and for information storage.

Suppression of reversible photocyclization reaction induced fluorescence enhancement: a theoretical study

The fluorescence intensity of SIP-2 and DPI under different environments are mainly related to the competition between the PC reaction and aggregation induced restriction of phenyl ring rotational motions.

Synthesis of lanthanide-doped strontium aluminate nanoparticles encapsulated in polyacrylonitrile nanofibres: photoluminescence properties for anticounterfeiting applications

Photochromism has been applied as an interesting technique in order to improve the anticounterfeiting of commercial commodities. To build up a mechanically reliable anticounterfeiting nanocomposite, it has been vital to enhance the engineering process of the anticounterfeiting material. In the current study, we developed mechanically reliable and highly photoluminescent lanthanide-doped strontium aluminate nanoparticles (LSAN)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hybrid nanofibres successfully fabricated using an electrospinning technique for anticounterfeiting applications. The produced nanocomposite films exhibited ultraviolet-induced photochromic anticounterfeiting properties. To guarantee the transparency of the LSAN-PAN film, LSAN must be immobilized onto the nanoparticle size to allow better dispersion without aggregation in the polyacrylonitrile matrix. The LSAN-PAN nanofibrous film demonstrated absorbance intensity that exhibited at 354 nm and associated with an emission intensity at 424 nm. The produced LSAN-PAN films demonstrated an enhanced hydrophobicity when increasing the ratio of LSAN, without adversely influencing their native appearance and mechanical performance. Upon excitation with ultraviolet light, the translucent nanofibrous substrates exhibited fast and reversible photochromic activity to greenish-yellow without exhaustion. The nanofibrous films exhibited stretchability, transparency, flexibility, and ultraviolet light-induced photochromism at low cost. The current strategy can be considered as an efficient technique towards the development of various anticounterfeiting materials for a better market with economic and social values.

A Tri-state Fluorescent Switch with "Gated" Solid-state Photochromism Induced by an External Force

In this article, we report a newly designed molecule composed of a dihydroazulene (DHA) group and a phenothiazine (PTZ) moiety, which achieves aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), mechanochromism and "gated" solid-state photochromism upon stimulation by an external force. Grinding loosens intermolecular interactions in the crystal and causes a red-shift of fluorescence from 570 nm to 600 nm. Meanwhile, the ring-opening reaction of DHA unit is activated by grinding and a remarkable photochromism could be observed from the grinded powder. The reddish emission of the grinded powder peaked at 600 nm weakened gradually and finally became dark, and a new absorption band at 470 nm emerged in the absorption spectra. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation results reveal that the intramolecular intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process is replaced by a locally excited (LE) emission on the DHA group, which leads to the quenching of fluorescence. Its impressive photochromic property inspired us to a simple but effective way to develop an encryption system which can let the correct information be displayed upon external stimulation.

Multiresponsive Tetra-Arylethene-Based Fluorescent Switch with Multicolored Changes: Single-Crystal Photochromism, Mechanochromism, and Acidichromism

In this article, we report a simple tetra-arylethene-based fluorescent switch TPS═C4 modified with a flexible alkyl chain by the Schiff base structure. The incorporation of C═N retains the excellent photochromic property of tetra-arylethene and endows TPS═C4 with new multiresponsiveness of mechanochromism and acidichromism and multicolor changes. TPS═C4 shows remarkable mechanochromism from a deep blue emission at 420 nm to bright blue with a new shoulder band at 450 nm, which arises from the force-induced phase transition from the crystal state to an amorphous form. Both the original crystalline powder and the ground amorphous sample exhibit interesting acidichromism, and their emission colors turn yellow (530 nm), due to the protonation of C═N. More interestingly, TPS═C4 displays fascinating photochromism in multiple states, especially in the single-crystal state. The flexible alkyl chain offers enough free space for molecular motion and facilitates single-crystal photochromism. Due to the multiresponsiveness and multicolor switch, TPS═C4 can be satisfactorily used for the multidimensional anticounterfeiting application. To the best of our knowledge, TPS═C4 is a rare multifunctional molecule with a simple structure but featuring multiresponsiveness and multicolor switch.

Achieving highly efficient aggregation-induced emission, reversible and irreversible photochromism by heavy halogen-regulated photophysics and D-A molecular pattern-controlled photochemistry of through-space conjugated luminogens

It is extremely challenging but desirable to regulate the photophysical and photochemical processes of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) in distinct states in a controllable manner. Herein, we design two groups of AIEgens based on a triphenylacrylonitrile (TPAN) skeleton with through-space conjugation (TSC) property, demonstrate controlled regulation of photophysical emission efficiency/color and photochemical photochromic and photoactivatable fluorescence behaviours of these compounds, and further validate design principles to achieve highly efficient and emission-tuning AIEgens and to accomplish photo-dependent color switches and fluorescence changes. It is surprisingly found that the introduction of heavy halogens like bromine into a TPAN skeleton dramatically enhances the emission efficiency, and such an abnormal phenomenon against the heavy-atom effect is attributed to the specific through-space conjugation nature of the AIE-active skeleton, effective intermolecular halogen-bond-induced restriction of intramolecular motions, and heavy atom-induced vibration reduction. The incorporation of two electron-donating amino groups into the TPAN skeleton cause the luminogens to undergo a bathochromic shifted emission due to the formation of a D-A pattern. Apart from the regulation of photophysical processes in the solid state, the construction of the D-A pattern in luminogens also results in extremely different photochemical reactions accompanying reversible/irreversible photochromism and photoactivatable fluorescence phenomena in a dispersed state. It is revealed that photo-triggered cyclization and decyclization reactions dominantly contribute to reversible photochromism of the TPAN family, and the photo-induced cyclization-dehydrogenation reaction is responsible for the irreversible color changes and photoactivatable fluorescence behaviours of the NTPAN family. The demonstrations of multiple-mode signaling in photoswitchable patterning and information encryption highlight the importance of controlled regulation of photophysics and photochemistry of fused chromic and AIE-active luminogens in distinct states.
