The Latest Advances in Ink-Based Nanogenerators: From Materials to Applications

Nanogenerators possess the capability to harvest faint energy from the environment. Among them, thermoelectric (TE), triboelectric, piezoelectric (PE), and moisture-enabled nanogenerators represent promising approaches to micro-nano energy collection. These nanogenerators have seen considerable progress in material optimization and structural design. Printing technology has facilitated the large-scale manufacturing of nanogenerators. Although inks can be compatible with most traditional functional materials, this inevitably leads to a decrease in the electrical performance of the materials, necessitating control over the rheological properties of the inks. Furthermore, printing technology offers increased structural design flexibility. This review provides a comprehensive framework for ink-based nanogenerators, encompassing ink material optimization and device structural design, including improvements in ink performance, control of rheological properties, and efficient energy harvesting structures. Additionally, it highlights ink-based nanogenerators that incorporate textile technology and hybrid energy technologies, reviewing their latest advancements in energy collection and self-powered sensing. The discussion also addresses the main challenges faced and future directions for development.

Substrate-Free Thermoelectric 25 μm-Thick Ag2Se Films with High Flexibility and In-Plane zT of 0.5 at Room Temperature

Thermoelectric inorganic films are flexible when sufficiently thin. By removing the substrate, that is, making them free-standing, the flexibility of thermoelectric films can be enhanced to the utmost extent. However, studies on the flexibility of free-standing thermoelectric inorganic films have not yet been reported. Herein, the high thermoelectric performance and flexibility of free-standing thermoelectric Ag₂Se films are reported. Free-standing Ag₂Se films with a thickness of 25.0 ± 3.9 μm exhibited an in-plane zT of 0.514 ± 0.060 at room temperature. These films exhibited superior flexibility compared to Ag₂Se films constrained on a substrate. The flexibility of the Ag₂Se films was systematically investigated in terms of bending strain, bending radius, thickness, and elastic modulus. Using free-standing Ag₂Se films, a substrate-free, flexible thermoelectric generator was fabricated. The energy-harvesting capacity of the thermoelectric generator was also demonstrated.

New Progress on Fiber-Based Thermoelectric Materials: Performance, Device Structures and Applications

With the rapid development of wearable electronics, looking for flexible and wearable generators as their self-power systems has proved an extensive task. Fiber-based thermoelectric generators (FTEGs) are promising candidates for these self-powered systems that collect energy from the surrounding environment or human body to sustain wearable electronics. In this work, we overview performances and device structures of state-of-the-art fiber-based thermoelectric materials, including inorganic fibers (e.g., carbon fibers, oxide fibers, and semiconductor fibers), organic fibers, and hybrid fibers. Moreover, potential applications for related thermoelectric devices are discussed, and future developments in fiber-based thermoelectric materials are also briefly expected.
