Construction of Natural Loofah/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Core-Shell Electrospun Nanofibers via a Controllable Janus Nozzle for Switchable Oil-Water Separation

Boosting Demulsification and Antifouling Capacity of Membranes via an Enhanced Piezoelectric Effect for Sustaining Emulsion Separation

Traditional superwettable membranes for demulsification of oil/water emulsions could not maintain their separation performance for long because of low demulsification capacity and surface fouling during practical applications. A charging membrane could repel the contaminants for a while, the charge of which would gradually be neutralized during the separation progress. Here, a superhydrophilic piezoelectric membrane (SPM) with sustained demulsification and antifouling capacity is proposed for achieving prolonged emulsion separation, which is capable of converting inherent pulse hydraulic filtration pressure into pulse voltage. A pulse voltage up to -7.6 V is generated to intercept the oil by expediting the deformation and coalescence of emulsified oil droplets, realizing the demulsification. Furthermore, it repels negatively charged oil droplets, avoiding membrane fouling. Additionally, any organic foulants adhering to the membrane undergo degradation facilitated by the generated reactive oxygen species. The separation data demonstrate a 98.85% efficiency with a flux decline ratio below 14% during a 2 h separation duration and a nearly 100% flux recovery of SPM. This research opens new avenues in membrane separation, environmental remediation, etc.

Compressible Separator and Catalyst for Simultaneous Separation and Purification of Emulsions and Aqueous Pollutants

Oily wastewater, a global environmental concern, demands efficient oil/water separation and pollutant removal. Our compressible separator and catalyst (CSC) balls, prepared through sponge etching and metal nanoparticle synthesis, exhibited efficient degradation of dyes of varying sizes, spanning a molecular weight range from 139 to 696 g/mol during the oil/water separation. Control over the distance between catalysts was achieved by incorporating Ag-Pt-Pd catalysts into the sponge skeleton and by adjusting the compression rates. The dispersion of the catalysts improved degradation efficiency for larger dyes, while concentrating the catalysts proved to be more effective for the smaller ones. By optimizing the compression rates of CSC balls, we successfully achieved the effective removal of emulsions of different sizes and precise control of flux. Our CSC ball-loaded system offers efficient and versatile solutions for concurrent separation and purification of emulsions and pollutants with potential environmental benefits.

Structural Control of Nanofibers According to Electrospinning Process Conditions and Their Applications

Nanofibers have gained much attention because of the large surface area they can provide. Thus, many fabrication methods that produce nanofiber materials have been proposed. Electrospinning is a spinning technique that can use an electric field to continuously and uniformly generate polymer and composite nanofibers. The structure of the electrospinning system can be modified, thus making changes to the structure, and also the alignment of nanofibers. Moreover, the nanofibers can also be treated, modifying the nanofiber structure. This paper thoroughly reviews the efforts to change the configuration of the electrospinning system and the effects of these configurations on the nanofibers. Excellent works in different fields of application that use electrospun nanofibers are also introduced. The studied materials functioned effectively in their application, thereby proving the potential for the future development of electrospinning nanofiber materials.

Quick-Release Antifouling Hydrogels for Solar-Driven Water Purification

Hydrogels are promising soft materials for energy and environmental applications, including sustainable and off-grid water purification and harvesting. A current impediment to technology translation is the low water production rate well below daily human demand. To overcome this challenge, we designed a rapid-response, antifouling, loofah-inspired solar absorber gel (LSAG) capable of producing potable water from various contaminated sources at a rate of ∼26 kg m^-2 h^-1, which is sufficient to meet daily water demand. The LSAG-produced at room temperature via aqueous processing using an ethylene glycol (EG)-water mixture-uniquely integrates the attributes of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), polydopamine (PDA), and poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) to enable off-grid water purification with enhanced photothermal response and the capacity to prevent oil fouling and biofouling. The use of the EG-water mixture was critical to forming the loofah-like structure with enhanced water transport. Remarkably, under sunlight irradiations of 1 and 0.5 sun, the LSAG required only 10 and 20 min to release ∼70% of its stored liquid water, respectively. Equally important, we demonstrate the ability of LSAG to purify water from various harmful sources, including those containing small molecules, oils, metals, and microplastics.

Special Superwetting Materials from Bioinspired to Intelligent Surface for On-Demand Oil/Water Separation: A Comprehensive Review

Since superwetting surfaces have emerged, on-demand oil/water separation materials serve as a new direction for meeting practical needs. This new separation mode uses a single porous material to allow oil-removing and water-removing to be achieved alternately. In this review, the fundamentals of wettability are systematically summarized in oil/water separation. Most importantly, the two states, bioinspired surface and intelligent surface, are summarized for on-demand oil/water separation. Specifically, bioinspired surfaces include micro/nanostructures, bioinspired chemistry, Janus-featured surfaces, and dual-superlyophobic surfaces that these superwetting materials can possess asymmetric wettability in one structure system or opposite underliquid wettability by prewetting. Furthermore, an intelligent surface can be adopted by various triggers such as pH, thermal and photo stimuli, etc., to control wettability for switchable oil/water separation reversibly, expressing a thought beyond nature to realize innovative oil/water separation by external stimuli. Remarkably, this review also discusses the advantages of all the materials mentioned above, expanding the separation scope from the on-demand oil/water mixtures to the multiphase immiscible liquid-liquid mixtures. Finally, the prospects of on-demand oil/water separation materials are also concluded.

Porous organic polymers for drug delivery: hierarchical pore structures, variable morphologies, and biological properties

Porous organic polymers have received considerable attention in recent years because of their applicability as biomaterials. In particular, their hierarchical pore structures, variable morphologies, and tunable biological properties make them suitable as drug-delivery systems. In this review, the synthetic and post forming/control methods including templated methods, template-free methods, mechanical methods, electrospun methods, and 3D printing methods for controlling the hierarchical structures and morphologies of porous organic polymers are discussed, and the different methods affecting their specific surface areas, hierarchical structures, and unique morphologies are highlighted in detail. In addition, we discuss their applications in drug encapsulation and the development of stimuli (pH, heat, light, and dual-stimuli)-responsive materials, focusing on their use for targeted drug release and as therapeutic agents. Finally, we present an outlook concerning the research directions and applications of porous polymer-based drug delivery systems.

Mechanically robust Janus nanofibrous membrane with asymmetric wettability for high efficiency emulsion separation

Water pollution caused by oil leakage or oily sewage has seriously threatened the ecological environment and human health. It remains a tough task for scientists to develop versatile materials to purify different kinds of oily wastewater. In this study, we propose a facile "carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decoration and nanofibrous membrane integration" method to prepare a mechanical robust Janus membrane (JM) composed of a superhydrophilic nanofiber composite layer and a hydrophobic nanofiber composite layer. The asymmetric wettability can be controlled by tuning the thickness of the hydrophobic layer. The nanofiber composite in both two layers possesses a core-shell structure, guaranteeing the excellent flexibility and stretchability of the JM. In addition, the strong interfacial compatibility between the two layers ensures the stability and durability of the JM even after multiple stretching. More importantly, the JM could realize on-demand separation of different kinds of oily wastewater with high separation flux and separation efficiency, including oil/water mixtures with different oil densities, oil-in-water emulsions and water-in-oil emulsions. Furthermore, the JM exhibits cycling stability and long-term serviceability for the emulsion separation. The mechanically robust and stretchable JM has promising applications in purification of various oil contaminated wastewater.

Mechanical response of surface wettability of Janus porous membrane and its application in oil-water separation

Smart surfaces with switchable wettability are widely studied for environmental application. Although a large number of stimulation routes provide broad prospects for the development of smart surfaces, achieving high sensitivity, fast response and recovery, simple operation, security and good stability is still challenging. Herein, a Janus membrane via electrospinning, chemical bath deposition and heat treatment is constructed. By using the hydrophilic ZIF-L nanosheet to functionalize the hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate, a smart surface utilizes the ZIF-L crack induced by strain in the hydrophilic layer to control surface wettability is obtained. In the range of 0%-100% strain, the wettability of the smart surface presents an obvious change with stretching, and water contact angle of the surface shows a monotonic increase with a maximum tuning range from 47° to 114°. Due to local fusion of the TPU microfibers and good binding between the ZIF-L layer and the TPU substrate after heat treatment, the prepared Janus membrane exhibits consistent and symmetrical hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic transition curves in 50 stretching-releasing cycles. Thanks to the porous and asymmetric architecture, the membrane shows good oil-water separation performance, and the separation flux increases with the increase of strain, while the separation efficiency is always higher than 98%. Because of the excellent structural stability, the robust membrane with 100% strain maintains its oil-water separation property for 50 stretching-releasing cycles. This study provides a new perspective for the development of smart material with stimuli responsive surface for oily wastewater purification.
