Superhydrophobic Shape Memory Polymer Microarrays with Switchable Directional/Antidirectional Droplet Sliding and Optical Performance

White Roman Goose Feather-Inspired Unidirectionally Inclined Conical Structure Arrays for Switchable Anisotropic Self-Cleaning

White Roman goose (Anser anser domesticus) feathers, comprised of oriented conical barbules, are coated with gland-secreted preening oils to maintain a long-term nonwetting performance for surface swimming. The geese are accustomed to combing their plumages with flat bills in case they are contaminated with oleophilic substances, during which the amphiphilic saliva spread over the barbules greatly impairs their surface hydrophobicities and allows the trapped contaminants to be anisotropically self-cleaned by water flows. Particularly, the superhydrophobic behaviors of the goose feathers are recovered as well. Bioinspired by the switchable anisotropic self-cleaning functionality of white Roman geese, superhydrophobic unidirectionally inclined conical structures are engineered through the integration of a scalable colloidal self-assembly technology and a colloidal lithographic approach. The dependence of directional sliding properties on the shape, inclination angle, and size of conical structures is systematically investigated in this research. Moreover, their switchable anisotropic self-cleaning functionalities are demonstrated by Sudan blue II/water (0.01%) separation performances. The white Roman goose feather-inspired coatings undoubtedly offer a new concept for developing innovative applications that require directional transportation and the collection of liquids.

Superhydrophobic Non-Metallic Surfaces with Multiscale Nano/Micro-Structure: Fabrication and Application

Multiscale nano/micro-structured surfaces with superhydrophobicity are abundantly observed in nature such as lotus leaves, rose petals and butterfly wings, where microstructures typically reinforce mechanical stability, while nanostructures predominantly govern wettability. To emulate such hierarchical structures in nature, various methods have been widely applied in the past few decades to the manufacture of multiscale structures which can be applied to functionalities ranging from anti-icing and water-oil separation to self-cleaning. In this review, we highlight recent advances in nano/micro-structured superhydrophobic surfaces, with particular focus on non-metallic materials as they are widely used in daily life due to their lightweight, abrasion resistance and ease of processing properties. This review is organized into three sections. First, fabrication methods of multiscale hierarchical structures are introduced with their strengths and weaknesses. Second, four main application areas of anti-icing, water-oil separation, anti-fog and self-cleaning are overviewed by assessing how and why multiscale structures need to be incorporated to carry out their performances. Finally, future directions and challenges for nano/micro-structured surfaces are presented.

Oriented bouncing of droplets with a small Weber number on inclined one-dimensional nanoforests

Asymmetric superhydrophobic structures with anisotropic wettability can achieve directional bouncing of droplets and thus can have applications in directional self-cleaning, liquid transportation, and heat transfer. To achieve convenient large-scale preparation of asymmetric superhydrophobic surfaces, inclined nanoforests are prepared in this work using a technique of competitive ablation polymerization, which allows the control of the inclined angles, diameters, and heights of the nanostructures. In this study, such asymmetric structures with the smallest dimension (230 nm diameter) known are achieved by a simple etching method to guide droplet unidirectional bouncing. With such nanoforests, the mechanism of droplet bouncing on their surface is investigated, and controllable droplet bouncing over a long distance is achieved using droplets with a low Weber number. The proposed structure has a promising future in directional self-cleaning, liquid transportation and heat transfer.

Bidirectional Droplet Manipulation on Magnetically Actuated Superhydrophobic Ratchet Surfaces

Droplet manipulation has garnered significant attention in various fields due to its wide range of applications. Among many different methods, magnetic actuation has emerged as a promising approach for remote and instantaneous droplet manipulation. In this study, we present the bidirectional droplet manipulation on a magnetically actuated superhydrophobic ratchet surface. The surface consists of silicon strips anchored on elastomer ridges with superhydrophobic black silicon structures on the top side and magnetic layers on the bottom side. The soft magnetic properties of the strips enable their bidirectional tilting to form a ratchet surface and thus bidirectional droplet manipulation upon varying external magnetic field location and strength. Computational multiphysics models were developed to predict the tilting of the strips, demonstrating the concept of bidirectional tilting along with a tilting angle hysteresis theory. Experimental results confirmed the soft magnetic hysteresis and consequential bidirectional tilting of the strips. The superhydrophobic ratchet surface formed by the tilting strips induced the bidirectional self-propulsion of dispensed droplets through the Laplace pressure gradient, and the horizontal acceleration of the droplets was found to be positively correlated with the tilting angle of the strips. Additionally, a finite element analysis was conducted to identify the critical conditions for dispensed droplet penetration through the gaps between the strips, which hinder the droplet's self-propulsion. The models and findings here provide substantial insights into the design and optimization of magnetically actuated superhydrophobic ratchet surfaces to manipulate droplets in the context of digital microfluidic applications.

A Review of Smart Superwetting Surfaces Based on Shape-Memory Micro/Nanostructures

Bioinspired smart superwetting surfaces with special wettability have aroused great attention from fundamental research to technological applications including self-cleaning, oil-water separation, anti-icing/corrosion/fogging, drag reduction, cell engineering, liquid manipulation, and so on. However, most of the reported smart superwetting surfaces switch their wettability by reversibly changing surface chemistry rather than surface microstructure. Compared with surface chemistry, the regulation of surface microstructure is more difficult and can bring novel functions to the surfaces. As a kind of stimulus-responsive material, shape-memory polymer (SMP) has become an excellent candidate for preparing smart superwetting surfaces owing to its unique shape transformation property. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress of smart superwetting SMP surfaces including fabrication methods, smart superwetting phenomena, and related application fields. The smart superwettabilities, such as superhydrophobicity/superomniphobicity with tunable adhesion, reversible switching between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity, switchable isotropic/anisotropic wetting, slippery surface with tunable wettability, and underwater superaerophobicity/superoleophobicity with tunable adhesion, can be obtained on SMP micro/nanostructures by regulating the surface morphology. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of smart superwetting SMP surfaces are discussed.

Triple and Quadruple Surface Pattern Memories in Nanoimprinted Polymer Blends

Trigger-responsive surfaces with multiple surface properties have wide-ranging application potential from surfaces with trigger-responsive fluid flow to cell culture to optical effects; such surfaces can be achieved through surface morphological changes. Although multiple shape-memory effects are successful in bulk polymers, there is limited programing and recovery of multiple surface memories due to the challenges in fabricating multiple surface topographies with good controllability. Here, we report the synergy between the polymer blend formulation and the thermal nanoimprinting process to achieve multiple microtopography memories. A series of immiscible blends consisting of poly(caprolactone) (PCL) and polyethylene (PE) with distinct thermal transitions governed by distinct crystallization events were augmented with improved elasticity through preferential cross-linking in the polymer blend. The effect of preferential cross-linking by dicumyl peroxide on the elastic property of the PCL/PE has been found to be nonlinearly dependent on the blend composition. This approach enabled triple and quadruple surface pattern fixity and recovery in nanoimprinted PCL/PE blends. Specifically, we demonstrated the recovery of a micropillar structure (diameter: 20 μm and height: 10 μm) from a hierarchical micrograting topography (width: 2 μm and height: 2 μm) when exposed to a thermal stimulus at 60 °C for 180 s. Furthermore, we also demonstrated the recovery of a deformed micrograting followed by a secondary recovery of the micropillar structure.

Controllable droplet sliding on smart shape memory slippery surface

Recently, slippery surfaces with controllable droplet sliding have aroused much attention in both fundamental research and realistic application. However, for almost all existing surfaces, constant stimuli such as thermal, light, magnetic fields, etc., are indispensable. Herein, by constructing pit structures on shape memory polymer and further infusing oil with low surface tension, we report a shape memory slippery surface that can overcome the above imperfection. Based on the shape memory performance, the surface can memorize diverse pit size as the surface is stretched or recovered. With the variation of pit structure, the sliding performances for both water and organic liquid droplets can be reversibly adjusted between the rolling and pinning states. This work, based on the shape memory effect, reports smart droplet sliding control through regulating surface microstructure, which not only provides a strategy for droplet sliding control, but also offers some fresh ideas for designing novel intelligent slippery surface.

Application and Development of Shape Memory Micro/Nano Patterns

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a class of smart materials that change shape when stimulated by environmental stimuli. Different from the shape memory effect at the macro level, the introduction of micro-patterning technology into SMPs strengthens the exploration of the shape memory effect at the micro/nano level. The emergence of shape memory micro/nano patterns provides a new direction for the future development of smart polymers, and their applications in the fields of biomedicine/textile/micro-optics/adhesives show huge potential. In this review, the authors introduce the types of shape memory micro/nano patterns, summarize the preparation methods, then explore the imminent and potential applications in various fields. In the end, their shortcomings and future development direction are also proposed.

Magneto-Responsive Shutter for On-Demand Droplet Manipulation

Magnetically responsive structured surfaces enabling multifunctional droplet manipulation are of significant interest in both scientific and engineering research. To realize magnetic actuation, current strategies generally employ well-designed microarrays of high-aspect-ratio structure components (e.g., microcilia, micropillars, and microplates) with incorporated magnetism to allow reversible bending deformation driven by magnets. However, such magneto-responsive microarray surfaces suffer from highly restricted deformation range and poor control precision under magnetic field, restraining their droplet manipulation capability. Herein, a novel magneto-responsive shutter (MRS) design composed of arrayed microblades connected to a frame is developed for on-demand droplet manipulation. The microblades can perform two dynamical transformation operations, including reversible swing and rotation, and significantly, the transformation can be precisely controlled over a large rotation range with the highest rotation angle up to 3960°. Functionalized MRSs based on the above design, including Janus-MRS, superhydrophobic MRS (SHP-MRS) and lubricant infused slippery MRS (LIS-MRS), can realize a wide range of droplet manipulations, ranging from switchable wettability, directional droplet bounce, droplet distribution, and droplet merging, to continuous droplet transport along either straight or curved paths. MRS provides a new paradigm of using swing/rotation topographic transformation to replace conventional bending deformation for highly efficient and on-demand multimode droplet manipulation under magnetic actuation.
