Large Field Enhancement of Nanocoral Structures on Porous Si Synthesized from Rice Husks

Significantly enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis of waste rice hull through a novel surfactant-based deep eutectic solvent pretreatment

The potential of green solvents, specifically deep eutectic solvents (DESs), has piqued the interest of researchers in the field of lignocellulose pretreatment. To enhance the enzymatic digestion efficiency of waste rice hull (RCH), an effective pretreatment approach was developed using the DES [AA][CATB], which was made with acetic acid (AA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The results showed that [AA][CATB] improved enzymatic saccharification by 3.7 times compared to raw RCH and efficiently eliminated lignin (38.7%) and removed xylan (42.9%). The improvement in enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency was then interpreted by a series of characterizations that showed a great morphological changed RCH with an obvious accessibility increase and a lignin surface area and hydrophobicity reduction. This work demonstrates that functional, and easily recoverable DESs have potential for improving the efficiency of lignocellulose pretreatment in biorefineries, providing a promising approach for developing green solvents and achieving more sustainable and efficient biorefinery processes.

Fast, Economical, and Reproducible Sensing from a 2D Si Wire Array: Accurate Characterization by Single Wire Spectroscopy

Silicon (Si) is promising as a field enhancement material because of its high abundance, low toxicity, and high refractive index. The field enhancement effect intensifies light-matter interactions, which improves photocatalysis, solar cell performance, and sensor sensitivity. To manufacture field enhancement materials on a production scale, the fabrication technique must be simple, cost-effective, fast, and highly reproducible and must produce a high enhancement factor (EF). Herein, we report on an economical and efficient fabrication method for a field enhancement substrate consisting of a two-dimensional Si wire array (2D-SiWA). This substrate was demonstrated as a fluorescence sensor with high sensitivity (EF > 200) and composed of a large area (6.0 mm²). In addition, single wire spectroscopy was used to identify very high reproducibility of the sensor sensitivity in regular regions (97%) and a mixture of regular and irregular regions (87%) of the 2D-SiWA. The large-area Si fluorescence sensor fabrication was cost-effective and rapid and was 50× less expensive, 20×faster, and 60,000×larger than the typical electron beam lithography method.

Derivation of Luminescent Mesoporous Silicon Nanocrystals from Biomass Rice Husks by Facile Magnesiothermic Reduction

High-quality silicon (Si) nanocrystals that simultaneously had superior mesoporous and luminescent characteristics were derived from sticky, red, and brown rice husks via the facile and cost-effective magnesiothermic reduction method. The Si nanocrystals were confirmed to comprise an aggregated morphology with spherical nanocrystals (e.g., average sizes of 15-50 nm). Due to the surface functional groups formed at the nanocrystalline Si surfaces, the Si nanocrystals clearly exhibited multiple luminescence peaks in visible-wavelength regions (i.e., blue, green, and yellow light). Among the synthesized Si nanocrystals, additionally, the brown rice husk (BRH)-derived Si nanocrystals showed to have a strong UV absorption and a high porosity (i.e., large specific surface area: 265.6 m2/g, small average pore diameter: 1.91 nm, and large total pore volume: 0.5389 cm3/g). These are indicative of the excellent optical and textural characteristics of the BRH-derived Si nanocrystals, compared to previously reported biomass-derived Si nanocrystals. The results suggest that the biomass BRH-derived Si nanocrystals hold great potential as an active source material for optoelectronic devices as well as a highly efficient catalyst or photocatalyst for energy conversion devices.
