Synergistic Effects of Surface Passivation and Charge Separation to Improve Photo-electrochemical Performance of BiOI Nanoflakes by Au Nanoparticle Decoration

Potential application of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) when it meets light

Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is a kind of typical two-dimensional (2D) material that has been increasingly developed alongside other 2D materials such as graphene, MXenes, and transition-metal dichalcogenide. However, its potential applications have not been widely whispered compared to those of other 2D materials. Using its distinctive properties, BiOI can be used for various applications, especially when it meets sunlight and other light-related electromagnetic waves. In this present review, we discuss the developments of BiOI and challenges in the applications for photodetector and light-assisted sensors, photovoltaic devices, optoelectronic logic devices, as well as photocatalysts. We start the discussion with a basic understanding and development of BiOI, crystal structure, and its properties. The synthesis and further development, such as green synthesis and its challenges in the synthesis-suited industry, as well as device integration, are also explained together with a plausible strategy to enhance the feasibility of BiOI for those various applications. We believe that the provided discussion and perspectives will not only promote BiOI to be one of the highly considered 2D materials but can also assist recent graduates in any materials science discipline and inform the senior scientists and industrial-based stakeholders of the latest advances in bismuth oxide and mixed-anion compounds.

Type-I heterojunction destruction by In situ formation of Bi2S3 for split-type photoelectrochemical aptasensor

Development of new strategies in photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors is an important way to realize sensitive detection of biomolecule. In this study, mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs)-assisted split-type PEC aptasensor with in situ generation of Bi₂S₃ was proposed to achieve reliable detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). To be more specific, this bioresponsive release system will release large amounts of Na₂S by the reaction between PSA and aptamer that capped Na₂S-loading MSNs. Next, the Na₂S reacts with Bi to yield BiOI/BiOBr/Bi₂S₃ composite, which leads to an alteration in the electron-hole transfer pathway of the photoelectric material and a decrease in the response. As the PSA concentration increases, more Na₂S can be released and lower photocurrent is obtained. The linear range under the optimal experimental conditions is 10 pg·mL^-1-1 μg⋅mL^-1, and the detection limit is 1.23 pg⋅mL^-1, which has satisfactory stability and anti-interference.

Charge Carrier Dynamics of CsPbBr3/g-C3N4 Nanoheterostructures in Visible-Light-Driven CO2-to-CO Conversion

The photon energy-dependent selectivity of photocatalytic CO₂-to-CO conversion by CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals (NCs) and CsPbBr₃/g-C₃N₄ nanoheterostructures (NHSs) was demonstrated for the first time. The surficial capping ligands of CsPbBr₃ NCs would adsorb CO₂, resulting in the carboxyl intermediate to process the CO₂-to-CO conversion via carbene pathways. The type-II energy band structure at the heterojunction of CsPbBr₃/g-C₃N₄ NHSs would separate the charge carriers, promoting the efficiency in photocatalytic CO₂-to-CO conversion. The electron consumption rate of CO₂-to-CO conversion for CsPbBr₃/g-C₃N₄ NHSs was found to intensively depend on the rate constant of interfacial hole transfer from CsPbBr₃ to g-C₃N₄. An in situ transient absorption spectroscopy investigation revealed that the half-life time of photoexcited electrons in optimized CsPbBr₃/g-C₃N₄ NHS was extended two times more than that in the CsPbBr₃ NCs, resulting in the higher probability of charge carriers to carry out the CO₂-to-CO conversion. The current work presents important and novel insights of semiconductor NHSs for solar energy-driven CO₂ conversion.

Two-Step Process of a Crystal Facet-Modulated BiVO4 Photoanode for Efficiency Improvement in Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

The photoactivity of nanoporous bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄, BVO) photoanodes that were fabricated by a two-step process (electrodeposition and then thermal conversion) in photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen (H₂) evolution can be enhanced about 1.44-fold by improving the constitutive ratio of (111̅), (061), and (242̅) crystal facets. The PEC characterization was carried out to investigate the factors altering the performance, which revealed that the crystal facet modulation could improve the photoactivity of the BVO photoanodes. In addition, the orientation-controlled BVO thin-film electrodes are introduced as evidence that the present crystal facet modulation is the positive effect for BVO photoanodes in PEC. The investigation of energy band structures and interfacial charge carrier dynamics of the BVO photoanodes reveals that the crystal facet modulation could result in a shorter lifetime of charge carrier recombination and larger band bending at the interface between BVO and electrolytes. This outcome could improve the charge separation and charge transfer efficiencies of BVO photoanodes, promoting the efficiency of PEC H₂ evolution. Moreover, this crystal facet modulation can combine with co-catalyst decoration to further improve the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of BVO photoanodes in PEC. This study presents a potential strategy to promote the PEC activity by crystal facet modulation and important insights into the interfacial charge transfer properties of semiconductor photoelectrodes for the application in solar fuel generation.

Ultrafast saturable absorption of BiOI nanosheets prepared by chemical vapor transport

The saturable absorption properties of BiOI nanosheets with exposed {110} facets prepared by the chemical vapor transport were investigated by Z-scan with femtosecond pulse laser. The nonlinear absorption coefficient at 400 nm is stronger and more sensitive to photoexcitation than its nonlinear response at 800 nm. The small saturation intensity could have been achieved, which is one order of magnitude smaller than that of black phosphorus nanosheets, while the Imχ⁽³⁾ are determined to be -4.35×10^-12esu close to theoretical prediction. According to time-resolved photoluminescence spectrum results, this strong saturated absorption at 400 nm may be attributed to the interband recombination process, whose lifetime was 230 ps.

Enhancing photoelectrochemical water splitting with plasmonic Au nanoparticles

The water-based renewable chemical energy cycle has attracted interest due to its role in replacing existing non-renewable resources and alleviating environmental issues. Utilizing the semi-infinite solar energy source is the most appropriate way to sustain such a water-based energy cycle by producing and feeding hydrogen and oxygen. For production, an efficient photoelectrode is required to effectively perform the photoelectrochemical water splitting reaction. For this purpose, appropriately engineered nanostructures can be introduced into the photoelectrode to enhance light-matter interactions for efficient generation and transport of charges and activation of surface chemical reactions. Plasmon enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting, whose performance can potentially exceed classical efficiency limits, is of great importance in this respect. Plasmonic gold nanoparticles are widely accepted nanomaterials for such applications because they possess high chemical stability, efficiently absorb visible light unlike many inorganic oxides, and enhance light-matter interactions with localized plasmon relaxation processes. However, our understanding of the physical phenomena behind these particles is still not complete. This review paper focuses on understanding the interfacial phenomena between gold nanoparticles and semiconductors and provides a summary and perspective of recent studies on plasmon enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting using gold nanoparticles.
