Nonlithographic Formation of Ta2O5 Nanodimple Arrays Using Electrochemical Anodization and Their Use in Plasmonic Photocatalysis for Enhancement of Local Field and Catalytic Activity

Review of Anodic Tantalum Oxide Nanostructures: From Morphological Design to Emerging Applications

Anodization of transition metals, particularly the valve metals (V, W, Ti, Ta, Hf, Nb, and Zr) and their alloys, has emerged as a powerful tool for controlling the morphology, purity, and thickness of oxide nanostructures. The present review is focused on the advances in the synthesis of micro/nanostructures of anodic tantalum oxides (ATO) in inorganic, organic, and mixed inorganic-organic type electrolytes with critically highlighting anodization parameters, such as applied voltage, current, time, and electrolyte temperature. Particularly, the growth of ATO nanostructures in fluoride containing electrolytes and their applications are briefly covered. The details of the current- or voltage-time transient and its relation to the growth of the anodic oxide films are presented systematically. The main discussion revolves around the incorporation of various electrolyte species into the surface of ATO structures and its effects on their physicochemical properties. The latest progress in understanding the growth mechanism of nanoporous/nanotubular ATO structures is outlined. Additionally, the impact of annealing temperature (ranging from 400-1000 °C) and atmosphere on the crystalline structure, morphology, impurity content, and physical properties of the ATOs is briefly described. The common modification methods, such as decorating with other transition metal/metal oxide, heteroatom doping, or generating defects in the ATO structures, are discussed. Besides, the review also covers the most promising applications of these materials in the fields of capacitors, supercapacitors, memristive devices, corrosion protection, photocatalysis, photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, and biomaterials. Finally, future research directions for designing ATO-based nanomaterials and their utilities are indicated.

Morphology of Nanostructured Tantalum Oxide Controls Stem Cell Differentiation and Improves Corrosion Behavior

Tantalum is receiving increasing attention in the biomedical field due to its biocompatible nature and superior mechanical properties. However, the bioinert nature of tantalum still poses a challenge and limits its integration into the bone tissue. To address these issues, we fabricated nanotubular (NT), nanocoral (NC), and nanodimple morphologies on tantalum surfaces via anodization. The size of these nanofeatures was engineered to be approximately 30 nm for all anodized samples. Thus, the influence of the anodized nanostructured morphology on the chemical and biological properties of tantalum was evaluated. The NT and NC samples exhibited higher surface roughness, surface energy, and hydrophilicity compared to the nonanodized samples. In addition, the NT samples exhibited the highest corrosion resistance among all of the investigated samples. Biological experiments indicated that NT and NC samples promoted human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell (hADMSC) spreading and proliferation up to 5 days in vitro. ALP, COL1A1, and OSC gene expressions as well as calcium mineral synthesis were upregulated on the NT and NC samples in the second and third weeks in vitro. These findings highlight the significance of nanostructured feature morphology for anodized tantalum, where the NT morphology was shown to be a potential candidate for orthopedic applications.

Au Nanowires Decorated Ultrathin Co3 O4 Nanosheets toward Light-Enhanced Nitrate Electroreduction

Nitrate is a reasonable alternative instead of nitrogen for ammonia production due to the low bond energy, large water-solubility, and high chemical polarity for good absorption. Nitrate electroreduction reaction (NO₃ RR) is an effective and green strategy for both nitrate treatment and ammonia production. As an electrochemical reaction, the NO₃ RR requires an efficient electrocatalyst for achieving high activity and selectivity. Inspired by the enhancement effect of heterostructure on electrocatalysis, Au nanowires decorated ultrathin Co₃ O₄ nanosheets (Co₃ O₄ -NS/Au-NWs) nanohybrids are proposed for improving the efficiency of nitrate-to-ammonia electroreduction. Theoretical calculation reveals that Au heteroatoms can effectively adjust the electron structure of Co active centers and reduce the energy barrier of the determining step (*NO → *NOH) during NO₃ RR. As the result, the Co₃ O₄ -NS/Au-NWs nanohybrids achieve an outstanding catalytic performance with high yield rate (2.661 mg h^-1 mg_cat ^-1 ) toward nitrate-to-ammonia. Importantly, the Co₃ O₄ -NS/Au-NWs nanohybrids show an obviously plasmon-promoted activity for NO₃ RR due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property of Au-NWs, which can achieve an enhanced NH₃ yield rate of 4.045 mg h^-1 mg_cat ^-1 . This study reveals the structure-activity relationship of heterostructure and LSPR-promotion effect toward NO₃ RR, which provide an efficient nitrate-to-ammonia reduction with high efficiency.

Plasmon Mediated Electron Transfer and Temperature Dependent Electron-Phonon Scattering in Gold Nanoparticles Embedded in Dielectric Films

Excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance in metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a glassy matrix generates hot electrons, which can be extracted for different optoelectronic applications. The insights of plasmon relaxation dynamics with varying surrounding dielectric environments and temperature dependence electron-phonon scattering process in gold (Au) NPs are still not very clear. Here, we have employed ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy to explore the hot electron transfer, plasmon mediated electron transfer and electron-phonon dynamics of photo-excited Au NPs in glassy film matrix with variable SiO2/TiO2 compositions at cryogenic (5 K) to room temperature (300 K). Herein, we have chosen two pump excitation wavelengths (400 and 700 nm). The 400 nm excitation (d→sp) would generate hot electron and the 700 nm excitation (sp→sp) provide information of direct plasmon relaxation. Drastic reduction of the transient signal of Au NPs in the high TiO2 content film as compared to pure SiO2 confirm hot electron transfer from Au plasmon to TiO2. Electron-phonon scattering time constant (τe-ph) of Au NPs in the glassy film found to be faster in presence of TiO2 due to facile electron transfer/injection. Temperature dependent TA studies suggest electron-phonon scattering time decreases with temperature. These findings would assist to develop more advanced photo-voltaic, opto-electronic and quantum optic-based devices using the plasmonic metal NPs.

Instantaneous Property Prediction and Inverse Design of Plasmonic Nanostructures Using Machine Learning: Current Applications and Future Directions

Advances in plasmonic materials and devices have given rise to a variety of applications in photocatalysis, microscopy, nanophotonics, and metastructures. With the advent of computing power and artificial neural networks, the characterization and design process of plasmonic nanostructures can be significantly accelerated using machine learning as opposed to conventional FDTD simulations. The machine learning (ML) based methods can not only perform with high accuracy and return optical spectra and optimal design parameters, but also maintain a stable high computing efficiency without being affected by the structural complexity. This work reviews the prominent ML methods involved in forward simulation and inverse design of plasmonic nanomaterials, such as Convolutional Neural Networks, Generative Adversarial Networks, Genetic Algorithms and Encoder–Decoder Networks. Moreover, we acknowledge the current limitations of ML methods in the context of plasmonics and provide perspectives on future research directions.

Harvesting Hot Holes in Plasmon-Coupled Ultrathin Photoanodes for High-Performance Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

The harvesting of hot carriers produced by plasmon decay to generate electricity or drive a chemical reaction enables the reduction of the thermalization losses associated with supra-band gap photons in semiconductor photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Through the broadband harvesting of light, hot-carrier PEC devices also produce a sensitizing effect in heterojunctions with wide-band gap metal oxide semiconductors possessing good photostability and catalytic activity but poor absorption of visible wavelength photons. There are several reports of hot electrons in Au injected over the Schottky barrier into crystalline TiO₂ and subsequently utilized to drive a chemical reaction but very few reports of hot hole harvesting. In this work, we demonstrate the efficient harvesting of hot holes in Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) covered with a thin layer of amorphous TiO₂ (a-TiO₂). Under AM1.5G 1 sun illumination, photoanodes consisting of a single layer of ∼50 nm diameter Au NPs coated with a 10 nm shell of a-TiO₂ (Au@a-TiO₂) generated 2.5 mA cm^-2 of photocurrent in 1 M KOH under 0.6 V external bias, rising to 3.7 mA cm^-2 in the presence of a hole scavenger (methanol). The quantum yield for hot-carrier-mediated photocurrent generation was estimated to be close to unity for high-energy photons (λ < 420 nm). Au@a-TiO₂ photoelectrodes produced a small positive photocurrent of 0.1 mA cm^-2 even at a bias of -0.6 V indicating extraction of hot holes even at a strong negative bias. These results together with density functional theory modeling and scanning Kelvin probe force microscope data indicate fast injection of hot holes from Au NPs into a-TiO₂ and light harvesting performed near-exclusively by Au NPs. For comparison, Au NPs coated with a 10 nm shell of Al₂O₃ (Au@Al₂O₃) generated 0.02 mA cm^-2 of photocurrent in 1 M KOH under 0.6 V external bias. These results underscore the critical role played by a-TiO₂ in the extraction of holes in Au@a-TiO₂ photoanodes, which is not replicated by an ordinary dielectric shell. It is also demonstrated here that an ultrathin photoanode (<100 nm in maximum thickness) can efficiently drive sunlight-driven water splitting.
