Efficient Mechanical Stress Transfer in Multilayer Graphene with a Ladder-like Architecture

Mechanical reinforcement from two-dimensional nanofillers: model, bulk and hybrid polymer nanocomposites

Thanks to their intrinsic properties, multifunctionality and unique geometrical features, two-dimensional nanomaterials have been used widely as reinforcements in polymer nanocomposites. The effective mechanical reinforcement of polymers is, however, a multifaceted problem as it depends not only on the intrinsic properties of the fillers and the matrix, but also upon a number of other important parameters. These parameters include the processing method, the interfacial properties, the aspect ratio, defects, orientation, agglomeration and volume fraction of the fillers. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the mechanical reinforcement of polymer nanocomposites from two-dimensional nanofillers with an emphasis on the mechanisms of reinforcement. Model, bulk and hybrid polymer nanocomposites are reviewed comprehensively. The use of Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies is examined in light of the distinctive information they can yield upon stress transfer at interfaces. It is shown that the very diverse family of 2D nanofillers includes a number of materials that can attribute distrinctive features to a polymeric matrix, and we focus on the mechanical properties of both graphene and some of the most important 2D materials beyond graphene, including boron nitride, molybdenum disulphide, other transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes and black phosphorous. In the first part of the review we evaluate the mechanical properties of 2D nanoplatelets in "model" nanocomposites. Next we examine how the performance of these materials can be optimised in bulk nanocomposites. Finally, combinations of these 2D nanofillers with other 2D nanomaterials or with nanofillers of other dimensions are assessed thoroughly, as such combinations can lead to additive or even synergistic mechanical effects. Existing unsolved problems and future perspectives are discussed.

Lotus leaf-inspired thermal insulation and anti-icing topography

Porous sandwich-like structures with surface roughness possess the capacity to sustain droplets, diminish the area of contact between solids and liquids, and augment heat conductivity, and thus delay ice formation when the temperature drops below the freezing point. The prevalence of this combination of surface roughness and a hollow sandwich structure has been observed in several organisms, such as lotus leaves, which have developed these features as a result of environmental adaptation. This study introduces a new design for a surface consisting of a micro-nano conical array and a foam structure with a gradient of pores. The primary components of this design were isocyanate and polyether. The hollow gradient sandwich structure was created by manipulating the water content to increase the porosity, resulting in the formation of a conical-pit morphology on the underside of the specimen. This configuration significantly decreased the amount of heat lost and the modulus of elasticity of the sample. Additionally, the micro-nano hydrophobic structure on the upper surface hindered the transmission of temperature and delayed the formation of ice. This concept, inspired by natural structures, has significant potential applications in the areas of anti-icing, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

Buckling kinetics of graphene membranes under uniaxial compression

Despite past investigations of the buckling instability, the kinetics of the buckling process is not well understood. We develop a generic framework for determining the buckling kinetics of membranes under compressive stress (σ_{b}) via molecular dynamics simulations. The buckling time (t_{b}) is modeled by an extended Boltzmann-Arrhenius-Zhurkov equation accounting for temperature (T) and scale-dependent bending rigidity. We discern three regimes: (I) t_{b} decreases with T; (II) t_{b} increases with T; (III) t_{b} is T independent. Regime II coheres with the predictions of the theory of fluctuating sheets (TFS). Regime I is seen at small scales due to fluctuations about equilibrium and is not predicted by the TFS.

At Least 10-fold Higher Lubricity of Molecularly Thin D2O vs H2O Films at Single-Layer Graphene-Mica Interfaces

Interfacial water is a widespread lubricant down to the nanometer scale. We investigate the lubricities of molecularly thin H₂O and D₂O films confined between mica and graphene, via the relaxation of initially applied strain in graphene employing Raman spectroscopy. Surprisingly, the D₂O films are at least 1 order of magnitude more lubricant than H₂O films, despite the similar bulk viscosities of the two liquids. We propose a mechanism based on the known selective permeation of protons vs deuterons through graphene. Permeated protons and left behind hydroxides may form ion pairs clamping across the graphene sheet and thereby hindering the graphene from sliding on the water layer. This explains the lower lubricity but also the hindering diffusivity of the water layer, which yields a high effective viscosity in accordance with findings in dewetting experiments. Our work elucidates an unexpected effect and provides clues to the behavior of graphene on hydrous surfaces.

Uniaxially Strained Graphene: Structural Characteristics and G-Mode Splitting

The potential use of graphene in various strain engineering applications requires an accurate characterization of its properties when the material is under different mechanical loads. In this work, we present the strain dependence of the geometrical characteristics at the atomic level and the Raman active G-band evolution in a uniaxially strained graphene monolayer, using density functional theory methods as well as molecular dynamics atomistic simulations for strains that extend up to the structural failure. The bond length and bond angle variations with strain, applied either along the zigzag or along the armchair direction, are discussed and analytical relations describing this dependence are provided. The G-mode splitting with strain, as obtained by first principles' methods, is also presented. While for small strains, up to around 1%, the G-band splitting is symmetrical in the two perpendicular directions of tension considered here, this is no longer the case for larger values of strains where the splitting appears to be larger for strains along the zigzag direction. Further, a crossing is observed between the lower frequency split G-mode component and the out-of-plane optical mode at the Γ point for large uniaxial strains (>20%) along the zigzag direction.

Width Dependent Elastic Properties of Graphene Nanoribbons

The mechanical response of graphene nanoribbons under uniaxial tension, as well as its dependence on the nanoribbon width, is presented by means of numerical simulations. Both armchair and zigzag edged graphene nanoribbons are considered. We discuss results obtained through two different theoretical approaches, viz. density functional methods and molecular dynamics atomistic simulations using empirical force fields especially designed to describe interactions within graphene sheets. Apart from the stress-strain curves, we calculate several elastic parameters, such as the Young’s modulus, the third-order elastic modulus, the intrinsic strength, the fracture strain, and the Poisson’s ratio versus strain, presenting their variation with the width of the nanoribbon.
