Lignocellulosic biomass-derived functional nanocellulose for food-related applications: A review

In recent years, nanocellulose (NC) has gained significant attention due to its remarkable properties, such as adjustable surface chemistry, extraordinary biological properties, low toxicity and low density. This review summarizes the preparation of NC derived from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), including cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF). It focuses on examining the impact of non-cellulosic components such as lignin and hemicellulose on the functionality of NC. Additionally, various surface modification strategies of NC were discussed, including esterification, etherification and silylation. The review also emphasizes the progress of NC application in areas such as Pickering emulsions, food packaging materials, food additives, and hydrogels. Finally, the prospects for producing NC from LCB and its application in food-related fields are examined. This work aims to demonstrate the effective benefits of preparing NC from lignocellulosic biomass and its potential application in the food industry.

Recent progress and applications of cellulose and its derivatives-based humidity sensors: A review

Cellulose and its derivatives, which are low-cost, degradable, reproducible and highly hydrophilic, can serve as both substrate and humidity sensitive materials, making them more and more popular as ideal biomimetic materials for humidity sensors. Benefiting from these characteristics, cellulose-based humidity sensors cannot only exhibit high sensitivity, excellent mechanical performance, wide humidity response range, etc., but also can be applied to fields such as human health, medical care and agricultural product safety monitoring. Herein, cellulose-based humidity sensors are first classified according to the different conductive active materials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, electrolytes, metal compounds, and polymer materials, based on which the latest research progress is introduced, and the roles of different types of conductive materials in cellulose-based humidity sensors are analyzed and summarized. Besides, the similarities and differences in their working mechanisms are expounded. Finally, the application scenarios of cellulose-based humidity sensors in human movement respiration and skin surface humidity monitoring are discussed, which can make readers quickly familiarize the current preparation method, working mechanism and subsequent development trend of cellulose-based humidity sensors more effectively.

Mechanically strong and biodegradable holocellulose films prepared from Camellia oleifera shells

Bioplastic derived from renewable lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Herein, Callmellia oleifera shells (COS), a unique byproduct from tea oil industry, were delignified and converted into high-performance bio-based films via a green citric acid treatment (15 %, 100 °C and 24 h), taking advantage of their high hemicellulose content. The structure-property relations of COS holocellulose (COSH) films were systematically analyzed considering different treatment conditions. The surface reactivity of COSH was improved via a partial hydrolysis route and strong hydrogen bonding formed between the holocellulose micro/nanofibrils. COSH films exhibited high mechanical strength, high optical transmittance, improved thermal stability, and biodegradability. A mechanical blending pretreatment of COSH, which disintegrated the COSH fibers before the citric acid reaction, further enhanced the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the films up to 123.48 and 5265.41 MPa, respectively. The films decomposed completely in soil, demonstrating an excellent balance between degradability and durability.

Heteroaggregation effects on Pickering stabilization using oppositely charged cellulose nanocrystal and nanochitin

Pickering emulsions are stabilized using complexes of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and nanochitin (NCh). The colloidal behavior and heteroaggregation in aqueous media are studied in relation to complex formation and net charge. The complexes are remarkably effective in stabilizing oil-in-water Pickering emulsions under conditions of slightly net positive or negative charges, as determined by the CNC/NCh mass ratio. Close to charge neutrality (CNC/NCh ~5), large heteroaggregates form, resulting in unstable emulsions. By contrast, under net cationic conditions, interfacial arrest of the complexes leads to non-deformable emulsion droplets with high stability (no creaming for 9 months). At given CNC/NCh concentrations, emulsions with up to 50% oil fraction are produced. This study shows how to control emulsion properties beyond consideration of the typical formulation variables, for instance, through adjusting CNC/NCh ratio or charge stoichiometry. We highlight the possibilities that are available for emulsion stabilization by using a combination of polysaccharide nanoparticles.

Allomorphic regulation of bamboo cellulose by mild alkaline peroxide for holocellulose nanofibrils production

The exploration of sustainable lignocellulosic nanomaterials with unique properties and applicable functions is receiving growing interest. In this work, holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) were prepared from moso bamboo using mild alkaline peroxide bleaching method (MAPB) followed by mechanical nanofibrillation. MAPB was proved to effectively remove lignin and retain hemicellulose. Meanwhile, partial allomorphic changes from cellulose I to cellulose II were revealed together with varying degrees of crystallinity. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiment showed an increasing thermal stability trend due to more allomorphic changes into anti-parallel cellulose II. Well-dispersed HCNFs suspensions were successfully prepared by homogenization and HCNFs films with high transparency and flexibility were fabricated. The films reached the maximum tensile strength of 55.8 MPa and tensile strain of 1.55 % along with a calculated toughness of 25 MJ/m3. Moreover, the prepared materials are biocompatible and completely non-toxic, which will theoretically support the application of HCNFs materials in fields of biology, medicine and food industry.

Holocellulose nanofibrils assisted exfoliation to prepare MXene-based composite film with excellent electromagnetic interference shielding performance

A high-yield and straightforward method is proposed to obtain an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding film based on multilayered Ti₃C₂T_x (m-Ti₃C₂T_x). Holocellulose nanofibrils modified by sulfamic acid (SHCNF) with unique "core-shell" structure can act as a dispersant and a binder to assist in exfoliating m-Ti₃C₂T_x into delaminated-Ti₃C₂T_x (d-Ti₃C₂T_x) and fabricate flexible Ti₃C₂T_x/SHCNF composite films with a high-yield value. The "brick-and-mortar" composite films exhibit a superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of 45.02 dB with an ultrathin thickness of 40 μm at the 12.4 GHz. Moreover, these flexible and strong integrated Ti₃C₂T_x/SHCNF composite films also display excellent specific EMI SE of SSE/t (4437 dB cm² g^-1) and high EMI shielding efficiency (99.996%). Therefore, the SHCNF-assisted method provides a cost-effective approach to fabricate a strong and flexible MXene-based nanocomposite films toward EMI shielding application.

Recent Advances in the Fabrication and Environmental Science Applications of Cellulose Nanofibril-Based Functional Materials

Cellulose is one of the important biomass materials in nature and has shown wide applications in various fields from materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, wearable devices, energy, and environmental science, as well as many others. Due to their one-dimensional nanostructure, high specific surface area, excellent biodegradability, low cost, and high sustainability, cellulose nanofibrils/nanofibers (CNFs) have been widely used for environmental science applications in the last years. In this review, we summarize the advance in the design, synthesis, and water purification applications of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. To achieve this aim, we firstly introduce the synthesis and functionalization of CNFs, which are further extended for the formation of CNF hybrid materials by combining with other functional nanoscale building blocks, such as polymers, biomolecules, nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional (2D) materials. Then, the fabrication methods of CNF-based 2D membranes/films, three-dimensional (3D) hydrogels, and 3D aerogels are presented. Regarding the environmental science applications, CNF-based nanomaterials for the removal of metal ions, anions, organic dyes, oils, and bio-contents are demonstrated and discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in this promising research field are discussed. It is expected that this topical review will guide and inspire the design and fabrication of CNF-based novel nanomaterials with high sustainability for practical applications.

Pulmonary inflammatory and fibrogenic response induced by graphitized multi-walled carbon nanotube involved in cGAS-STING signaling pathway

Graphitized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GMWCNTs) are a new type of nanomaterial. Recently, their production and application in biological medicine have grown rapidly. However, GMWCNTs may cause adverse health effects, including the common occupational disease of pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary fibrosis is a serious progressive disease that often leads to lung failure, high mortality, and disability, and there is no effective therapy currently available. Therefore, identifying new biomarkers of the disease is important to better understand the disease mechanisms and explore new therapeutic strategies. In this study, 40 μg of GMWCNTs was used to treat mice in vivo by pharyngeal aspiration, and different genes were screened by transcriptome sequencing. Activation of the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon gene (STING) signal pathway had an important effect on the development of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. GMWCNTs were then administered to the mice with a STING inhibitor (C-176). Inhibition of STING effectively decreased pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis in mice induced by GMWCNTs. Collectively, activation of the cGAS-STING signaling pathway is involved in GMWCNT-induced pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis in mice.
