Black Au-Decorated TiO2 Produced via Laser Ablation in Liquid

Synergistic Bactericidal Effect of Zn2+ Ions and Reactive Oxygen Species Generated in Response to Either UV or X-ray Irradiation of Zn-Doped Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation TiO2 Coatings

Zn-containing TiO2-based coatings with Na, Ca, Si, and K additives were obtained by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of Ti in order to achieve an effective and broad bactericidal protection without compromising biocompatibility. A protocol has been developed for cleaning the coating surface from electrolyte residues, ensuring the preservation of the microstructure and composition of the surface layer. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, three characteristic microstructural zones in the PEO-Zn coating are well documented: zone 1 with a TiO2-based nanocrystalline structure, zone 2 with an amorphous structure, and zone 3 around pores with an amorphous-nanocrystalline structure. The excellent cytocompatibility of PEO-Zn samples was confirmed by three different methods: monitoring the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells, assessing the viability of sheep osteoblast cells using calcein-AM staining and fluorescence microscopy, and incubation with spheroids based on primary osteoblast cells and mouse embryonic fibroblast NIH3T3 cells. The PEO-Zn coatings absorb >60% of the incident light over the UV and Vis-NIR spectral ranges. After 24 h, the PEO-Zn coatings completely inactivate four types of strains: Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus CSA154 and ATCC29213 and Gram-negative Escherichia coli K261 and U20, and also prevent E. coli U20 and K261 biofilm formation. The superior antibacterial activity is associated with the synergistic effect of Zn2+ ions in safe concentration and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in response to either UV irradiation or soft short-term X-ray irradiation. The X-ray irradiation-induced ROS formation by a PEO coating is reported for the first time. The enhanced bactericidal activity after X-ray irradiation compared to UV illumination is attributed to the more intense ROS generation in the first few hours. The results obtained significantly expand the possibilities of using PEO coatings on the surfaces of titanium implants.

X-ray and UV Irradiation-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Mediated Antibacterial Activity in Fe and Pt Nanoparticle-Decorated Si-Doped TiCaCON Films

Bone implants with biocompatibility and the ability to biomineralize and suppress infection are in high demand. The occurrence of early infections after implant placement often leads to repeated surgical treatment due to the ineffectiveness of antibiotic therapy. Therefore, an extremely attractive solution to this problem would be the ability to initiate bacterial protection of the implant by an external influence. Here, we present a proof-of-concept study based on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the implant surface in response to X-ray irradiation, including through a layer of 3 mm adipose tissue, providing bactericidal protection. The effect of UV and X-ray irradiation of the implant surface on the ROS formation and the associated bactericidal activity was compared. The focus of our study was light-sensitive Si-doped TiCaCON films decorated with Fe and Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with photoinduced antibacterial activity mediated by ROS. In the visible and infrared range of 300-1600 nm, the films absorb more than 60% of the incident light. The high light absorption capacity of TiO2/TiC and TiO2/TiN heterostructures was demonstrated by density functional theory calculations. After short-term (5-10 s) low-dose X-ray irradiation, the films generated significantly more ROS than after UV illumination for 1 h. The Fe/TiCaCON-Si films showed enhanced biomineralization capacity, superior cytocompatibility, and excellent antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant hospital Escherichia coli U20 and K261 strains and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MW2 strain. Our study clearly demonstrates that oxidized Fe NPs are a promising alternative to the widely used Ag NPs in antibacterial coatings, and X-rays can potentially be used in ROS-regulating therapy to suppress inflammation in case of postimplant complications.

Electrostatically Assisted Construction Modified MXene-IL-Based Nanofluids for Photothermal Conversion

Solar energy, as renewable energy, has paid extensive attention for solar thermal utilization due to its unique characteristics such as rich resources, easy access, clean, and pollution-free. Among them, solar thermal utilization is the most extensive one. Nanofluid-based direct absorption solar collectors (DASCs), as an important alternative method, can further improve the solar thermal efficiency. Notably, the stability of photothermal conversion materials and flowing media is critical to the performance of DASC. Herein, we first proposed novel Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids by the electrostatic interaction, which consists of functional Ti3C2Tx modified with PDA and PEI as a photothermal conversion material and ionic liquid with low viscosity as the flow medium. Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids exhibit excellent cycle stability, wide spectrum, and efficient solar energy absorption performance. Besides, Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids maintain liquid state in a range of -80 to 200 °C, and its viscosity was as low as 0.3 Pa·s at 0 °C. Moreover, the equilibrium temperature of Ti3C2Tx@PDA-IL at a very low mass fraction of 0.04% reached 73.9 °C under 1 Sun, indicating an excellent photothermal conversion performance. Furthermore, the application of nanofluids in photosensitive inks has been preliminarily explored, which is expected to play a role in the fields of injectable biomedical materials and photo/electric double-generation thermal and hydrophobic anti ice coatings.

Multigram-Scale Production of Hybrid Au-Si Nanomaterial by Laser Ablation in Liquid (LAL) for Temperature-Feedback Optical Nanosensing, Light-to-Heat Conversion, and Anticounterfeit Labeling

Recent progress in hybrid optical nanomaterials composed of dissimilar constituents permitted an improvement in the performance and functionality of novel devices developed for optoelectronics, catalysis, medical diagnostics, and sensing. However, the rational combination of contrasting materials such as noble metals and semiconductors within individual hybrid nanostructures via a ready-to-use and lithography-free fabrication approach is still a challenge. Here, we report on a two-step synthesis of hybrid Au-Si microspheres generated by laser ablation of silicon in isopropanol followed by laser irradiation of the produced Si nanoparticles in the presence of HAuCl₄. Thermal reduction of [AuCl₄]^- species to a metallic gold phase, along with its subsequent mixing with silicon under laser irradiation, creates a nanostructured material with a unique composition and morphology, as revealed by electron microscopy, tomography, and elemental analysis. A combination of basic plasmonic and nanophotonic materials such as gold and silicon within a single microsphere allows for efficient light-to-heat conversion, as well as single-particle SERS sensing with temperature-feedback modality and expanded functionality. Moreover, the characteristic Raman signal and hot-electron-induced nonlinear photoluminescence coexisting within the novel Au-Si hybrids, as well as the commonly criticized randomness of the nanomaterials prepared by laser ablation in liquid, were proved to be useful for the realization of anticounterfeiting labels based on a physically unclonable function approach.

Progress on TiO2-based materials for solar water interfacial evaporation

Solar water interfacial evaporation (SWIE) has attracted much attention for harvesting clean water. Over the last few decades, researchers have developed an innovative photo-thermal material for high-performance solar water interfacial evaporation. For higher evaporation performance, TiO2-based materials gain attention as a promising photo-thermal material due to their light absorption capacity. This study compared conceptual designs of TiO2-based materials for SWIE. Structural design and engineering strategies for improving evaporation rates and higher thermal conversion efficiency were reviewed. In addition, the material’s thermal stability and heat management were analyzed. This review provides an overview of the current advances in photo-thermal TiO2 materials to motivate research and translation efforts from the laboratory to large-scale solar water clean water production. Additional benefits of TiO2 materials on solar water interfacial evaporation should be investigated beyond containers to solve interconnected water, environmental, and energy progression.

Biodegradable Polymer Nanosheets Incorporated with Zn-Containing Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

So far, poly(L-lactic acid), PLLA nanosheets proved to be promising for wound healing. Such biodegradable materials are easy to prepare, bio-friendly, cost-effective, simple to apply and were shown to protect burn wounds and facilitate their healing. At the same time, certain metal ions are known to be essential for wound healing, which is why this study was motivated by the idea of incorporating PLLA nanosheets with Zn²⁺ ion containing nanoparticles. Upon being applied on wound, such polymer nanosheets should release Zn²⁺ ions, which is expected to improve wound healing. The work thus focused on preparing PLLA nanosheets embedded with several kinds of Zn-containing nanoparticles, their characterization and ion-release behavior. ZnCl₂ and ZnO nanoparticles were chosen because of their different solubility in water, with the intention to see the dynamics of their Zn²⁺ ion release in liquid medium with pH around 7.4. Interestingly, the prepared PLLA nanosheets demonstrated quit similar ion release rates, reaching the maximum concentration after about 10 h. This finding implies that such polymer materials can be promising as they are expected to release ions within several hours after their application on skin.

Ag-Decorated Si Microspheres Produced by Laser Ablation in Liquid: All-in-One Temperature-Feedback SERS-Based Platform for Nanosensing

Combination of dissimilar materials such as noble metals and common semiconductors within unified nanomaterials holds promise for optoelectronics, catalysis and optical sensing. Meanwhile, difficulty of obtaining such hybrid nanomaterials using common lithography-based techniques stimulates an active search for advanced, inexpensive, and straightforward fabrication methods. Here, we report one-pot one-step synthesis of Ag-decorated Si microspheres via nanosecond laser ablation of monocrystalline silicon in isopropanol containing AgNO₃. Laser ablation of bulk silicon creates the suspension of the Si microspheres that host further preferential growth of Ag nanoclusters on their surface upon thermal-induced decomposition of AgNO₃ species by subsequently incident laser pulses. The amount of the AgNO₃ in the working solution controls the density, morphology, and arrangement of the Ag nanoclusters allowing them to achieve strong and uniform decoration of the Si microsphere surface. Such unique morphology makes Ag-decorated Si microspheres promising for molecular identification based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. In particular, the designed single-particles sensing platform was shown to offer temperature-feedback modality as well as SERS signal enhancement up to 10⁶, allowing reliable detection of the adsorbed molecules and tracing their plasmon-driven catalytic transformations. Considering the ability to control the decoration degree of Si microspheres by Ag nanoclusters via amount of the AgNO₃, the developed one-pot easy-to-implement PLAL synthesis holds promise for gram-scale production of high-quality hybrid nanomaterial for various nanophotonics and sensing applications.

Laser-Based Synthesis of TiO2-Pt Photocatalysts for Hydrogen Generation

The development of visible-light active titanium dioxide is one of the key challenges in photocatalysis that stimulates the development of TiO₂-based composite materials and methods for their synthesis. Here, we report the use of pristine and Pt-modified dark titanium dioxide prepared via pulsed laser ablation in liquid (Nd:YAG laser, 1064 nm, 7 ns) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from alcohol aqueous solutions. The structure, textural, optical, photoelectrochemical, and electrochemical properties of the materials are studied by a complex of methods including X-ray diffraction, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, electrophoretic light scattering, diffuse reflection spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical testing, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Both the thermal treatment effect and the effect of modification with platinum on photocatalytic properties of dark titania materials are studied. Optimal compositions and experimental conditions are selected, and high photocatalytic efficiency of the samples in the hydrogen evolution reaction (apparent quantum yield of H₂ up to 0.38) is demonstrated when irradiated with soft UV and blue LED, i.e., 375 and 410 nm. The positive effect of low platinum concentrations on the increase in the catalytic activity of dark titania is explained.

A comprehensive review and outlook on the experimental techniques to investigate the complex dynamics of pulsed laser ablation in liquid for nanoparticle synthesis

Pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) has been established as one of the most efficient and impactful methods for producing pure and ligand-free nanoparticles (NPs). PLAL has successfully been utilized for the synthesis of metal NPs, semiconductor NPs, ceramic NPs, and even nanocomposites. A variety of NPs, including core-shell, nanocubes, nanorods, and many other complex structures, can be synthesized using PLAL. The versatility associated with PLAL has led to the synthesis of NPs that have found applications in the field of biomedicine, sensing technology, energy harvesting, and various industries. Despite all the aforementioned advantages, there has been an ambiguity in terms of conditions/parameters for the nanoparticle synthesis as reported by various research groups. This has led to a perception that PLAL provides little or no control over the properties of the synthesized NPs. The properties of the NPs are reliant on transient dynamics caused due to a high-intensity laser's interaction with the target material. To understand the process of nanoparticle synthesis and to control the properties of NPs, it is critical to understand the various processes that occur during PLAL. The investigation of PLAL is essential for understanding the dynamical processes involved. However, the investigation techniques employed to probe PLAL present their own set of difficulties, as high temporal as well as spatial resolution is a prerequisite to probe PLAL. Hence, the purpose of this Review is to understand the dynamical processes of PLAL and gain an insight into the various investigation techniques and their data interpretation. In addition to the current challenges, some ways of overcoming these challenges are also presented. The benefits of concurrent investigations with special emphasis on the simultaneous investigation by multiple techniques are summarized, and furthermore, a few examples are also provided to help the readers understand how the simultaneous investigation works.

Plasmonic Hybrid Nanostructures in Photocatalysis: Structures, Mechanisms, and Applications

(Sun)Light is an abundantly available sustainable source of energy that has been used in catalyzing chemical reactions for several decades now. In particular, studies related to the interaction of light with plasmonic nanostructures have been receiving increased attention. These structures display the unique property of localized surface plasmon resonance, which converts light of a specific wavelength range into hot charge carriers, along with strong local electromagnetic fields, and/or heat, which may all enhance the reaction efficiency in their own way. These unique properties of plasmonic nanoparticles can be conveniently tuned by varying the metal type, size, shape, and dielectric environment, thus prompting a research focus on rationally designed plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. In this review, the term "hybrid" implies nanomaterials that consist of multiple plasmonic or non-plasmonic materials, forming complex configurations in the geometry and/or at the atomic level. We discuss the synthetic techniques and evolution of such hybrid plasmonic nanostructures giving rise to a wide variety of material and geometric configurations. Bimetallic alloys, which result in a new set of opto-physical parameters, are compared with core-shell configurations. For the latter, the use of metal, semiconductor, and polymer shells is reviewed. Also, more complex structures such as Janus and antenna reactor composites are discussed. This review further summarizes the studies exploiting plasmonic hybrids to elucidate the plasmonic-photocatalytic mechanism. Finally, we review the implementation of these plasmonic hybrids in different photocatalytic application domains such as H₂ generation, CO₂ reduction, water purification, air purification, and disinfection.

Femtosecond Laser Fabrication of Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Structures with Nonlinear Photoluminescence

Fabrication of hybrid micro- and nanostructures with a strong nonlinear response is challenging and represents a great interest due to a wide range of photonic applications. Usually, such structures are produced by quite complicated and time-consuming techniques. This work demonstrates laser-induced hybrid metal-dielectric structures with strong nonlinear properties obtained by a single-step fabrication process. We determine the influence of several incident femtosecond pulses on the Au/Si bi-layer film on produced structure morphology. The created hybrid systems represent isolated nanoparticles with a height of 250–500 nm exceeding the total thickness of the Au-Si bi-layer. It is shown that fabricated hybrid nanostructures demonstrate enhancement of the SHG signal (up to two orders of magnitude) compared to the initial planar sample and a broadband photoluminescence signal (more than 200 nm in width) in the visible spectral region. We establish the correlation between nonlinear signal and phase composition provided by Raman scattering measurements. Such laser-induced structures have significant potential in optical sensing applications and can be used as components for different nanophotonic devices.
