Synergistically Improved Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting of Edge-Oxidized-Graphene-Bridged N-Type Bismuth Telluride Thick Films

Tailoring the Thermoelectric Properties of 3D-Printed n-Type Bi1.7Sb0.3Te3 with Incorporated Edge-Oxidized Graphene

Using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to fabricate Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric (TE) generators opens a potential way to create shape-conformable devices capable of recovering waste heat from thermal energy sources with diverse surface morphologies. However, pores formed in 3D-printed Bi2Te3-based materials by the removal of the organic ink binder result in unsatisfactory performance compared to the bulk materials, which has limited the widespread application of the ink-based 3D printing process. Furthermore, managing the volatile Se element in the n-type materials poses significant technological challenges compared to the p-type counterparts, resulting in a scarcity of research on 3D printing of n-type Bi2Te3. Here, we synthesized edge-oxidized graphene (EOG)-incorporated Se-free n-type Bi1.7Sb0.3Te3 (BST) using a direct ink writing (DIW) process with a binder-free novel ink. The incorporated EOG provides connectivity between small BST grains separated by pores and induces a bimodal-like grain structure during the DIW and sintering process. The optimal EOG content of 0.1 wt % in 3D-printed n-type BST simultaneously achieved both carrier transport control and active phonon scattering, due to its unique microstructure. A maximum ZT of 0.71 was obtained in the 0.1 wt % EOG/BST materials at 448 K, comparable to commercial bulk n-type Bi2Te3-based materials. Further, a single-element device composed of the EOG-BST material exhibited a 2-fold improvement in performance compared to pure-BST. These results open a technological route for the application of 3D printing technology for ink-based TE materials.

The Latest Advances in Ink-Based Nanogenerators: From Materials to Applications

Nanogenerators possess the capability to harvest faint energy from the environment. Among them, thermoelectric (TE), triboelectric, piezoelectric (PE), and moisture-enabled nanogenerators represent promising approaches to micro-nano energy collection. These nanogenerators have seen considerable progress in material optimization and structural design. Printing technology has facilitated the large-scale manufacturing of nanogenerators. Although inks can be compatible with most traditional functional materials, this inevitably leads to a decrease in the electrical performance of the materials, necessitating control over the rheological properties of the inks. Furthermore, printing technology offers increased structural design flexibility. This review provides a comprehensive framework for ink-based nanogenerators, encompassing ink material optimization and device structural design, including improvements in ink performance, control of rheological properties, and efficient energy harvesting structures. Additionally, it highlights ink-based nanogenerators that incorporate textile technology and hybrid energy technologies, reviewing their latest advancements in energy collection and self-powered sensing. The discussion also addresses the main challenges faced and future directions for development.

Progress and challenges of emerging MXene based materials for thermoelectric applications

To realize sustainable development, more and more countries forwarded carbon neutrality goal. Accordingly, improving the utilization efficiency of traditional fossil fuel is an effective strategy for this great goal. Keeping this in mind, developing thermoelectric devices to recover waste heat energy resulted in the consumption process of fuel is demonstrated to be promising. High performance thermoelectric devices require advanced materials. MXenes are a kind of 2D materials with a layered structure, which demonstrate excellent thermoelectric performance owing to their unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Also, substantial achievement has been gained during the past few years in synthesizing MXene based materials for thermoelectric devices. In this review, the mainstream synthetic routes of MXene from etching MAX were summarized. Significantly, the current state and challenges of research on improving the performance of MXene based thermoelectrics are explored, including pristine MXene and MXene based composites.

Flexible n-Type Abundant Chalcopyrite/PEDOT:PSS/Graphene Hybrid Film for Thermoelectric Device Utilizing Low-Grade Heat

Combining inorganic thermoelectric (TE) materials with conductive polymers is one promising strategy to develop flexible thermoelectric (FTE) films and devices. As most inorganic materials tried up until now in FTE composites are composed of scarce or toxic elements, and n-type FTE materials are particularly desired, we combined the abundant, inexpensive, nontoxic Zn-doped chalcopyrite (Cu_1-xZn_xFeS₂, x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03) with a flexible electrical network constituted by poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and graphene for n-type FTE films. Hybrid films from the custom design of binary Cu_1-xZn_xFeS₂/PEDOT:PSS to the optimum design of ternary Cu_0.98Zn_0.02FeS₂/PEDOT:PSS/graphene are characterized. Compared with the binary film, a 4-fold enhancement in electrical conductivity was observed in the ternary film, leading to a maximum power factor of ∼ 23.7 μW m^-1 K^-2. The optimum ternary film could preserve >80% of the electrical conductivity after 2000 bending cycles, exhibiting an exceptional flexibility due to the network constructed by PEDOT:PSS and graphene. A five-leg thermoelectric prototype made of optimum films generated a voltage of 4.8 mV with a ΔT of 13 °C. Such an evolution of an inexpensive chalcopyrite-based hybrid film with outstanding flexibility exhibits the potential for cost-sensitive FTE applications.
