Pyrene-Based Nonwoven Fabric with Tunable Fluorescence Properties by Employing the Aggregation-Caused Quenching Effect

Multi-stimuli-responsive cyanostilbene derivatives: Their fluorescent and mechanochromic properties, and potential application in water sensing and anti-counterfeiting

In recent years, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have witnessed numerous groundbreaking advances in fundamental theoretical research and functional applications. Notably, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have achieved remarkable results, demonstrating immense potential for application in various fields such as chemistry, materials science, biology, and medicine. Herein, two multi-stimuli-responsive cyanostilbene derivatives TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTPA were synthesized by introducing tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and trifluoromethyl groups, respectively. Primarily, under the combined mechanism of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT), TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTPA exhibit "on-off-on" fluorescent emission characteristics in solution. Secondly, under 365 nm ultraviolet light irradiation, the photo-induced isomerization of PH-CNTPA causes changes in photophysical property, demonstrating its responsiveness to ultraviolet light. In addition, TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTPA exhibit high-contrast mechanochromic properties, providing broader possibilities for their potential applications in various fields. Moreover, owing to the unique fluorescence emission characteristics, TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTP have enormous potential for application in the field of encryption anti-counterfeiting. Besides, PH-CNTPA can be utilized for the detection of trace water in single or mixed solvents, demonstrating outstanding sensitivity and anti-interference properties in different solvents. This research work reveals the potential in the fields of water sensing and anti-counterfeiting for these two multi-stimuli-responsive compounds.

One-Pot Synthesis of a Mixed-Valent Copper(I/II)-Coordinated Covalent Organic Framework Induced by γ-Ray Radiation

Metal-anchored covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a class of significant derivatives of COFs, are widely used as heterogeneous catalysts in diverse chemical reactions. However, they are typically synthesized via post-treatment strategies, which often lead to the decline of COF crystallinity, decrease of porous properties, instability in catalytic performances, generation of additional chemical waste, and consumption of excess time and energy. In this work, we demonstrate an approach to construct a metal-functionalized COF via a one-pot method induced by γ-ray radiation. Specifically, copper-coordinated COF was in situ synthesized by irradiating a mixture of monomers and copper salt under ambient conditions. Interestingly, the initial Cu2+ ions were reduced to Cu+ ions by the radiation-generated reducing species, affording a unique mixed-valent copper(I/II)-coordinated COF. Additionally, the copper-coordinated COF displayed enhanced crystallinity and porous properties compared to those of the parent COF, displaying an opposite trend to the postsynthetic method. Notably, the introduced copper on the COF skeleton endowed the parent COF with catalytic ability. The resulting copper-coordinated COF exhibited remarkable catalytic performances in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol and maintained almost unchanged catalytic performance after five catalytic cycles.

A MOF@Metal Oxide Heterostructure Induced by Post-Synthetic Gamma-Ray Irradiation for Catalytic Reduction

Metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterostructures, which exhibit enhanced or unexpected functionality and properties due to synergistic effects, are typically synthesized using post-synthetic strategies. However, several reported post-synthetic strategies remain unsatisfactory, considering issues such as damage to the crystallinity of MOFs, presence of impure phases, and high time and energy consumption. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a novel route for constructing MOF based heterostructures using radiation-induced post-synthesis, highlighting the merits of convenience, ambient conditions, large-scale production, and notable time and energy saving. Specifically, a new HKUST-1@Cu2O heterostructure was successfully synthesized by simply irradiating a methanol solution dispersed of HKUST-1 with gamma ray under ambient conditions. The copper source of Cu2O was directly derived from in situ radiation etching and reduction of the parent HKUST-1, without the use of any additional copper reagents. Significantly, the resulting HKUST-1@Cu2O heterostructure exhibits remarkable catalytic performance, with a catalytic rate constant nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of the parent HKUST-1.

Radiation-Assisted Assembly of a Highly Dispersed Nanomolybdenum-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs), featuring a large surface area and 1D pore structure, serve as promising scaffolds for anchoring functional guest compounds, which can significantly enhance their performance and thus expand their potential applications. Postsynthetic strategy for COFs functionalization is versatile but challenging because of their tedious procedure with high time and energy consumption, generation of excess reaction waste, and damage to COF crystallinity. We report in this work a general strategy for the synthesis of inorganic nanocompound-functionalized COF composites in a one-pot way. Specifically, a high-crystallinity nanoscale molybdenum compound is successfully introduced into a COF skeleton with high dispersion in situ during the crystallization process of the COF induced by gamma ray radiation under ambient conditions. The obtained COF@Mo composites exhibit remarkable sorption performance for methylene blue and many other organic dyes in aqueous solution with the advantages of ultrarapid uptake dynamics and high removal efficiency.

Critical Assessment of Micellar Surface Charge-Dependent Disaggregation and Reaggregation of a Bis-Indole Self-Aggregate: What Should Be Our Case-Dependent Choice?

"Aggregation-caused quenching" is a deep-seated mechanism and has been widely used by the researchers as the possible basis for new sensor development. Contrast to aggregation, its turn around process, disaggregation, has gained much less consideration so far. Unfortunately, study of the further scope for reaggregation of the disaggregated probe assembly in the same solution, as and when required, is still under the rare category. The central theme of the current study is focused on this aspect. For this purpose, the effects of headgroup charge (cationic, anionic, and nonionic) and polarity of the micelles on the degree of disaggregation and subsequent emission amelioration of a synthesized bis-indole derivative, 3,3'-bisindolyl(phenyl)methane (BIPM), are studied using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. The relative emission yield of BIPM (φf = 0.01) is significantly enhanced in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (φf = 0.21) and polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (φf = 0.24), whereas comparatively less emission enhancement is recorded within the sodium dodecyl sulfate system (φf = 0.07). In contrast, addition of an external biophilic agent, uric acid, causes requenching of the enhanced emission because of the reaggregation of the disaggregated probes. Detailed microscopic and calorimetric studies are also adopted to investigate the disaggregation-reaggregation mechanism of BIPM associations. The study will provide prior insights about the use of suitable micellar systems for the required degree of disaggregation as well as for the modulation of emission efficiency by controlled tuning of the disaggregation-reaggregation equilibrium for similar probe associations in pure aqueous medium avoiding any chemical transformation.

Heat-Set Supramolecular Hydrogelation by Regulating the Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance for a Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescent Switch

Heat-set supramolecular gels exhibited totally opposite phase behaviors of dissolution upon cooling and gelation on heating. They are commonly discovered by chance and their rational design remains a great challenge. Herein, a rational design strategy is proposed to realize heat-set supramolecular hydrogelation through regulation of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of the system. A newly synthesized amphiphile hydrogelator with pyrene embedded in its lipophilic terminal can self-assemble into a hydrogel through a heating and cooling cycle. However, the host-guest complex of the gelator and hydrophilic γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CyD) results in a sol at room temperature. Thus, heat-set hydrogelation is realized from the sol state in a controllable manner. Heat-set gelation mechanism is revealed by exploring critical heat-set supramolecular gelation and the related findings provide a general strategy for developing new functional molecular gels with tunable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance.

Quasi-Chromophores Segregated by Single-Chain Nanoparticles of Fluorinated Zwitterionic Random Copolymers Showing Remarkably Enhanced Fluorescence Emission Capable of Fluorescent Cell Imaging

Organic and polymer fluorescent nanomaterials are a frontier research focus. Here in this work, a series of fluorinated zwitterionic random copolymers end-attached with a quasi-chromophoric group of pyrene or tetraphenylethylene (TPE) are well synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization with activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET ATRP). Those random copolymers with total degree of polymerization 100 or 200 are able to produce fluorescent single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) through intra-chain self-folding assembly with quite uniform diameters in the range of 10-20 nm as characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. By virtue of the segregation or confinement effect, both SCNPs functionalized with pyrene or TPE group are capable of emitting fluorescence, with pyrene tethered SCNPs exhibiting stronger fluorescence emission reaching the highest quantum yield ≈20%. Moreover, such kind of fluorescent SCNPs manifest low cytotoxicity and good cell imaging performance for Hela cells. The creation of fluorescent SCNPs through covalently attached one quasi-chromophore to the end of one fluorinated zwitterionic random copolymer provides an alternative strategy for preparing polymeric luminescence nanomaterials, promisingly serving as a new type of fluorescent nanoprobes for biological imaging applications.

A facile strategy for the large-scale preparation of starch-based AIE luminescent nanoaggregates via host-guest interactions and their versatile applications

Luminescent nanomaterials with outstanding optical properties have attracted growing interest due to their widespread applications. However, large-scale fabrication of luminescent nanomaterials with desired properties through a simple and economical process remains challenging. As a renewable natural resource, starch is non-toxic, easily accessible, and inexpensive, making it a popular choice for uses in various biomedical fields. In this work, we present a facile assembly strategy for the fabrication of starch-based luminescent nanoaggregates using starch as the host material and aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) as guest molecules. By employing simple procedures under mild conditions, highly luminescent nanoparticles with small sizes, high water dispersibility, and low cytotoxicity are prepared on a large scale. The resulting nano-assemblies demonstrate significantly enhanced fluorescence intensities, reduced susceptibility to photobleaching and low cytotoxicity. These fluorescent supramolecular aggregates can be employed in various application fields, including the fabrication of fluorescent hydrogels, fingerprint detection, cell imaging and in vivo lymphatic system imaging. The methodology developed in this work has immense potential to greatly promote the production of high-quality nanoparticles on the industrial scale, offering a cost-effective solution that can meet the needs of various applications and pave the way for wider implementation of nanotechnology.

Macromolecular grafting of carboxyl polymers on the surface of non-woven fabrics and their adsorption behavior on metal cations

In order to address the issues of the time-consuming, the low density of functional groups and the instability of mussel-inspired adsorbents, an efficient in situ cross-linked mussel-inspired coating-assisted macromolecular grafting strategy was proposed to prepare a polyacrylic acid (PAA) grafted polypropylene nonwoven (PP-g-PAA) for the efficient removal of heavy metal ions. The mussel-inspired coating was formed by rapid deposition in the presence of oxidizing agents and polyamines, and then thiol-terminated polyacrylic acid (PAA-SH) prepared by thiol-ene click reaction and glutaraldehyde were added in situ, and then PAA brushes were introduced on the surface of the polypropylene nonwoven via the Michael addition Schiff base reaction between the thiol and o-benzoquinone, and the improvement of the stability of the adsorbent was achieved through in situ formation of the three-dimensional cross-linked structure. A high density carboxyl group functionalized adsorbent with a grafting rate up to 38.98% was obtained, which also exhibited unprecedented tolerance to strong acid, alkali and polar organic solvents. Meanwhile, grafting on polyester nonwovens, sponges and PVDF membrane substrates confirmed the versatility of the proposed method. The PP-g-PAA was characterized by SEM, IR and XPS, and the adsorption behaviors of the adsorbent for Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ were systematically investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of PP-g-PAA was nearly twice as high as that of the mussel-inspired adsorbent. The adsorption mechanism was also well investigated.

Cascade Energy Transfer in Biopolymer-Templated Multi-Chromophoric Assemblies: Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Natural light-harvesting complexes collect energy from sunlight and transfer it to the reaction center through a cascade of energy and electron transfer steps. Artificial light-harvesting systems functioning in aqueous media mimic natural photosynthetic systems. However, their design remains a challenging task as closely packed antenna chromophores often undergo severe self-quenching. Herein, we report luminescent co-assemblies between cationic pyrene-appended imidazolium amphiphiles and two anionic biopolymeric scaffolds, heparin and DNA in aqueous media. These co-assemblies served as excellent platforms for constructing artificial light-harvesting systems as upon co-embedding of multiple external dyes, highly efficient single-step and cascade energy transfer was observed from the pyrene donors to the acceptor dyes. Most notably, the efficiency of the energy transfer process was possible to modulate by employing multiple stimuli such as pH and temperature, and this resulted in the generation of multi-color luminescent materials in solution and film states, and they were also exploited in ratiometric temperature sensing. Their stimuli-responsive luminescence in the solid state was found to be advantageous for encryption studies.

Photo-Activable Organosilver Nanosystem Facilitates Synergistic Cancer Theranostics

Anticancer drug development is important for human health, yet it remains a tremendous challenge. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which induces cancer cell apoptosis via light-triggered production of reactive oxygen species, is a promising method. However, it has minimal efficacy in subcellular targeting, hypoxic microenvironments, and deep-seated malignancies. Here, we constructed a breast cancer photo-activable theranostic nanosystem through the rational design of a synthetic lysosomal-targeted molecule with multifunctions as aggregation-induced near-infrared (NIR) emission, a photosensitizer (PDT), and organosilver (chemotherapy) for NIR imaging and synergistic cancer therapy. The synthetic molecule could self-assemble into nanoparticles (TPIMBS NPs) and be stabilized with amphiphilic block copolymers for enhanced accumulation in tumor sites through passive targeting while reducing the leakage in normal tissues. Through photochemical internalization, TPIMBS NPs preferentially concentrated in the lysosomes of cancer cells and generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon light irradiation, resulting in lysosomal rupture and release of PSs to the cytosol, which led to cell apoptosis. Further, the photoinduced release of Ag⁺ from TPIMBS NPs could act as chemotherapy, significantly improving the overall therapeutic efficacy by synergistic effects with PDT. This research sheds fresh light on the creation of effective cancer treatments.

High-Quality Conjugated Polymers Achieving Ultra-Trace Detection of Cr2O72− in Agricultural Products

In view of that conjugated polymers (CPs) are an attractive option for constructing high-sensitive Cr₂O₇²⁻ sensors but suffer from lacking a general design strategy, we first proposed a rational structure design of CPs to tailor their sensing properties while validating the structure-to-performance correlation. Short side chains decorated with N and O atoms as recognition groups were instructed into fluorene to obtain monomers Fmoc-Ala-OH and Fmoc-Thr-OH. Additionally, their polymers P(Fmoc-Ala-OH) and P(Fmoc-Thr-OH) were obtained through electrochemical polymerization. P(Fmoc-Ala-OH) and P(Fmoc-Thr-OH) with high polymerization degrees have an excellent selectivity towards Cr₂O₇²⁻ in comparison to other cations and anions. Additionally, their limit of detection could achieve 1.98 fM and 3.72 fM, respectively. Especially, they could realize the trace detection of Cr₂O₇²⁻ in agricultural products (red bean, black bean, and millet). All these results indicate that short side chains decorated with N and O atoms functionalizing polyfluorene enables the ultra-trace detection of Cr₂O₇²⁻. Additionally, the design strategy will spark new ideas for the construction of highly selective and sensitive Cr₂O₇²⁻ sensors.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission Threshold Dependence on Determination Method in Dye-Doped Polymer and Lead Halide Perovskite Waveguides

Nowadays, the search for novel active materials for laser devices is proceeding faster and faster thanks to the development of innovative materials able to combine excellent stimulated emission properties with low-cost synthesis and processing techniques. In this context, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties are typically investigated to characterize the potentiality of a novel material for lasers, and a low ASE threshold is used as the key parameter to select the best candidate. However, several different methods are currently used to define the ASE threshold, hindering meaningful comparisons among various materials. In this work, we quantitatively investigate the ASE threshold dependence on the method used to determine it in thin films of dye-polymer blends and lead halide perovskites. We observe a systematic ASE threshold dependence on the method for all the different tested materials, and demonstrate that the best method choice depends on the kind of information one wants to extract. In particular, the methods that provide the lowest ASE threshold values are able to detect the excitation regime of early-stage ASE, whereas methods that are mostly spread in the literature return higher thresholds, detecting the excitation regime in which ASE becomes the dominant process in the sample emission. Finally, we propose a standard procedure to properly characterize the ASE threshold, in order to allow comparisons between different materials.

Chemical Design of Activatable Photoacoustic Probes for Precise Biomedical Applications

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging technology, a three-dimensional hybrid imaging modality that integrates the advantage of optical and acoustic imaging, has great application prospects in molecular imaging due to its high imaging depth and resolution. To endow PA imaging with the ability for real-time molecular visualization and precise biomedical diagnosis, numerous activatable molecular PA probes which can specifically alter their PA intensities upon reacting with the targets or biological events of interest have been developed. This review highlights the recent developments of activatable PA probes for precise biomedical applications including molecular detection of the biotargets and imaging of the biological events. First, the generation mechanism of PA signals will be given, followed by a brief introduction to contrast agents used for PA probe design. Then we will particularly summarize the general design principles for the alteration of PA signals and activatable strategies for developing precise PA probes. Furthermore, we will give a detailed discussion of activatable PA probes in molecular detection and biomedical imaging applications in living systems. At last, the current challenges and outlooks of future PA probes will be discussed. We hope that this review will stimulate new ideas to explore the potentials of activatable PA probes for precise biomedical applications in the future.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Effect within Peroxyoxalate-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Efficient Harvest of Chemiluminescence Energy in Aqueous Solutions

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules that can avoid the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and break the concentration limit have been widely used for biosensing. Similar to fluorescence dyes, AIE molecules can be chemiexcited simply by a peroxyoxalate-based chemiluminescence (CL) reaction, but the hydrolysis of peroxyoxalate is often a problem in an aqueous solution. Herein, we report an AIE effect within peroxyoxalate-loaded silica nanoparticles (PMSNs) for an efficient harvest of CL energy as well as alleviation of bis(2,4,5-trichloro-6-carbopentoxyphenyl) oxalate (CPPO) hydrolysis. Peroxyoxalate (i.e., CPPO) and AIE molecules (i.e., 1,2-benzothiazol-2-triphenylamino acrylonitrile, BTPA) were loaded together within the mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to synthesize the BTPA-PMSN nanocomposite. The BTPA-PMSNs not only allowed CPPO to be dispersed well in an aqueous solution but also avoided the hydrolysis of CPPO. Meanwhile, the proximity between BTPA and CPPO molecules in the mesopores of MSNs facilitated the BTPA aggregate to harvest the energy from CL intermediates. Hence, the CL system of BTPA-PMSNs can work efficiently in aqueous solutions at a physiological pH. The CL quantum yield of the BTPA-PMSN system was measured to be 9.91 × 10^-5, about 20 000-fold higher than that obtained in the rhodamine B (RhB, a typical ACQ dye)-PMSN system. Using BTPA-PMSNs for H₂O₂ sensing, a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 5 nM can be achieved, 1000-fold lower than that achieved in the RhB-PMSNs system. Due to the feasibility of working at a physiological pH, this CL system is also quite suitable for the detection of oxidase substrates such as glucose and cholesterol. This BTPA-PMSN CL system with the merits of high CL quantum yield at a physiological pH is appealing for biosensing.
