Superior Conversion Efficiency Achieved in GeP3/h-BN Heterostructures as Novel Flexible and Ultralight Thermoelectrics

First principles study of strain effects on prospective 2D photocatalysts Sn2Se2X4 (X = P, As) with ultra-high charge carrier mobility

Ab initio calculations were employed to investigate the properties of Sn2Se2P4 and Sn2Se2As4, which are new semiconductors formed based on the 2D SnP3 structure. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to examine the structural characteristics and stability of both compounds. It was observed that both Sn2Se2P4 and Sn2Se2As4 exhibit notable toughness and ductility, characterized by a Poisson's ratio ranging from 0.16 to 0.20 and a Young's modulus ranging from 42.12 to 49.84 N m-1. The investigation focused on the examination of the electronic characteristics of the two compounds, as well as their correlation with optical properties, charge transport, and potential as photocatalysts. Being ductile semiconductors, the effects of strains on the properties of Sn2Se2P4 and Sn2Se2As4 were also investigated. The charge carrier mobility in the y-direction ranges from 103 to 104 cm2 V-1 s-1. Moreover, the electron-hole separation is expected to be very high as the difference in the mobilities of holes and electrons is really large. Moreover, it is worth noting that both Sn2Se2P4 and Sn2Se2As4 exhibit a significantly high absorption rate of 106 cm-1 in the visible region. The observed features of Sn2Se2P4 and Sn2Se2As4 indicate their potential as effective photocatalysts for the process of water splitting through the utilization of solar energy.

Polarization-resolved and helicity-resolved Raman spectra of monolayer XP3 (X = Ge and In)

Monolayer XP₃ (X = Ge, In) is a theoretically predicted two-dimensional (2D) material with fascinating adsorption efficiency, foreshadowing its potential applications in the photovoltaic and optoelectronic communities. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of its optical properties and to further boost quickly identifying its specific applications, in this paper we systematically investigated the polarization-resolved and helicity-resolved Raman spectra excited by two commonly used laser lines (532 nm and 633 nm) through density functional theory. The dynamical stability of monolayer XP₃ is demonstrated by phonon dispersion. Monolayer GeP₃ and InP₃ are found to exhibit significantly different point group symmetries and thereby Raman properties due to the big difference in atomic size and electronic configurations between the Ge atom and In atom. Raman anisotropy of monolayer XP₃ has been found when the wave vector of linear polarized incident light is parallel to the monolayer, and all the anisotropic Raman active phonons are categorized in terms of the locations of two (four) maxima in polarization angle dependent Raman intensities of the parallel (perpendicular) configuration. The polarization direction averaged Raman spectra have been further discussed according to the characteristics of light absorbance. The calculations of helicity-resolved Raman spectra indicate a stronger helicity selection rule under helical excitation with the wave vector normal to the monolayer. The present work paves the way for the suitable design, characterization and exploitation of the proposed 2D material with controllable surface properties for applications in electronics and optoelectronics.

Towards Integration of Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Boron Nitride (2D h-BN) in Energy Conversion and Storage Devices

The prominence of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D h-BN) nanomaterials in the energy industry has recently grown rapidly due to their broad applications in newly developed energy systems. This was necessitated as a response to the demand for mechanically and chemically stable platforms with superior thermal conductivity for incorporation in next-generation energy devices. Conventionally, the electrical insulation and surface inertness of 2D h-BN limited their large integration in the energy industry. However, progress on surface modification, doping, tailoring the edge chemistry, and hybridization with other nanomaterials paved the way to go beyond those conventional characteristics. The current application range, from various energy conversion methods (e.g., thermoelectrics) to energy storage (e.g., batteries), demonstrates the versatility of 2D h-BN nanomaterials for the future energy industry. In this review, the most recent research breakthroughs on 2D h-BN nanomaterials used in energy-based applications are discussed, and future opportunities and challenges are assessed.
