Acid-Etched Co3O4 Nanoparticles on Nickel Foam: The Highly Reactive (311) Facet and Enriched Defects for Boosting Methanol Oxidation Electrocatalysis

Ni- and Co-Based MOF-Derived NixCo3-xO4 Materials: As an Efficient Anode for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Application

Finding inexpensive and efficient anode materials is crucial for the oxidation of methanol in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), which is the key electrode reaction. Herein, we report metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Co3O4, NiO, and NixCo3-xO4 (where x = 1.5, 1, and 0.6) materials deposited on nickel foam as efficient anode material for methanol oxidation. Among them, NiCo2O4 exhibited the highest methanol oxidation activity, owing to its lowest charge-transfer resistance (0.097 Ω) and high electrochemically active surface area (1950 cm2), resulting in the lowest onset potential of 0.35 V vs Hg/HgO. The optimized Ni-to-Co ratio and synergistic effect between Ni and Co metals enable NiCo2O4 to achieve the highest mass activity of 151 mA mg-1 and geometric current density of 288 mA cm-2, demonstrating excellent durability over 14 h at 0.6 V. In addition, to optimize methanol concentration, all the electrocatalysts were tested in a range of methanol concentrations, showing 0.5 M methanol as the optimal concentration. This study focuses on optimizing the metal ratio and methanol concentration to achieve the highest catalytic activity. Additionally, this lays the foundation for developing diverse MOF-derived electrocatalysts and advancing DMFCs.

Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Methanol and Ethanol with 3d-Metal Based Anodic Electrocatalysts in Alkaline Media Using Carbon Based Electrode Assembly

Homogeneous electrocatalytic systems based on readily available, earth-abundant, inexpensive base metals Ni, Co, and Cr have been formulated for the electro-oxidation of alcohols (methanol and ethanol) that constitute a key half-cell component of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Notably, excellent results were obtained for both methanol as well as ethanol electro-oxidation while operating with a half-cell assembly based on all-non-noble working and counter electrode systems consisting of glassy carbon and graphite rod, respectively. Using NaOH as the supporting electrolyte, Ni/Co/Cr metal salts and their bis(iminopyridine) complexes have been used as anodic electrocatalysts for the alcohol half-cell reactions, and among them, catalytic systems based on Co outperformed the corresponding systems based on Ni and Cr. The system comprising CoCl2.·6H2O [10 mM] + NaOH [6 M] at room temperature emerged as the best electrocatalyst for both methanol [5 M] electro-oxidation (ca. 522.5 ± 13.5 mA cm-2 at 1.4 V) and ethanol [5 M] electro-oxidation (ca. 209 ± 25 mA cm-2 at 1.34 V). It was observed that regardless of the starting alcohol, the end product is carbon dioxide, all of which gets trapped as sodium carbonate (up to 97% yield), thereby mitigating any possible hazards of greenhouse gas emission. Inferences obtained from FETEM, FESEM, and EDS analysis of both the electrolyte solution and residues deposited on the electrode surface provide evidence for the mostly homogeneous nature of the reaction mixture with the molecular catalyst being the major contributor toward the electrocatalytic activity apart from the minor role played by trace heterogeneous particles. The current cell assembly operating with non-noble working and counter electrodes utilizing a catalytic system based on an earth-abundant, base metal salt/complex that not only results in good half-cell current densities for high-energy power-source DAFCs but also generates high-value sodium carbonate offers an exciting avenue.

Interfacial Effect-Induced Electrocatalytic Activity of Spinel Cobalt Oxide in Methanol Oxidation Reaction

In this study, spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles without combining with any other metal atoms have been decorated through the influence of two hard templating agents, viz., zeolite-Y and carboxy-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNT). The adornment of the Co3O4 nanoparticles, through the combined impact of the aluminosilicate and carbon framework has resulted in quantum interference, causing the reversal of signatory Raman peaks of Co3O4. Apart from the construction of small Co3O4 nanoparticles at the interface of the two matrices, the particles were aligned along the direction of COOH-MWCNT. The catalyst Co3O4-Y-MWCNT exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in comparison to Co3O4-Y, Co3O4-MWCNT, and bared Co3O4 with the current density of 0.92 A mg-1 at an onset potential of 1.33 V versus RHE. The material demonstrated persistent electrocatalytic activity up to 300 potential cycles and 20,000 s without substantial current density loss. High surface area of zeolite-Y in combination with the excellent conductivity of the COOH-MWCNT enhanced the electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst. The simplicity of synthesis, scale-up, and remarkable electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst Co3O4-Y-MWCNT provided an effective way toward the development of anode materials for direct methanol fuel cells.

Electrocatalytic Mechanism of Defect in Spinels for Water and Organics Oxidation

Spinels display promising electrocatalytic ability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and organics oxidation reaction because of flexible structure, tunable component, and multifold valence. Unfortunately, limited exposure of active sites, poor electronic conductivity, and low intrinsic ability make the electrocatalytic performance of spinels unsatisfactory. Defect engineering is an effective method to enhance the intrinsic ability of electrocatalysts. Herein, the recent advances in defect spinels for OER and organics electrooxidation are reviewed. The defect types that exist in spinels are first introduced. Then the catalytic mechanism and dynamic evolution of defect spinels during the electrochemical process are summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges of defect spinel electrocatalysts are brought up. This review aims to deepen the understanding about the role and evolution of defects in spinel for electrochemical water/organics oxidation and provide a significant reference for the design of efficient defect spinel electrocatalysts.

Electro-oxidation Reaction of Methanol over Reducible Ce1-x-yNixSryO2-δ: A Mechanistic Probe of Participation of Lattice Oxygen

Methanol oxidation reaction crucially depends on the formation of -OOH species over the catalyst's surface. Ni-based catalysts are by far the choice of materials, where the redox couple of Ni²⁺/Ni³⁺ facilitates the formation of -OOH species by surface reconstructions. However, it is challenging to oxidize Ni²⁺ as it generates charge-transfer orbitals near the Fermi energy level. One possible solution is to substitute Ni²⁺ with a reducible oxide support, which will not only facilitate the Ni²⁺ → Ni³⁺ oxidation but also adsorb oxygenated species like -OOH at a lower potential owing to its oxophilicity. This work shows with the help of structural and surface studies that the reducible CeO₂ support in Ni and Sr co-doped Ce_1-x-yNi_xSr_yO_2-δ solid solution can easily facilitate Ni²⁺ → Ni³⁺ oxidation as well as evolution of lattice oxygen during the methanol oxidation reaction. While the Ni³⁺ species helped in formation of -OOH surface intermediates, the evolved lattice oxygen eased the CO oxidation process in order to bring out the better CO-tolerant methanol oxidation activity over Ce_1-x-yNi_xSr_yO_2-δ. The study shows the unique importance of the electronic interactions between the active site and support and involvement of lattice oxygen in the methanol oxidation reaction.

Controlling the terminal layer atom of InTe for enhanced electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Herein, we report the method of molecular-beam-epitaxial growth (MBE) for precisely regulating the terminal surface with different exposed atoms on indium telluride (InTe) and studied the electrocatalytic performances toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The improved performances result from the exposed In or Te atoms cluster, which affects the conductivity and active sites. This work provides insights into the comprehensive electrochemical attributes of layered indium chalcogenides and exhibits a new route for catalyst synthesis.

Unveiling the Origin of Co3 O4 Quantum Dots for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Spinel cobalt oxide displays excellent photocatalytic performance, especially in solar driven water oxidation. However, the process of water reduction to hydrogen is considered as the Achilles' heel of solar water splitting over Co₃ O₄ owing to its low conduction band. Enhancement of the water splitting efficiency using Co₃ O₄ requires deeper insights of the carrier dynamics during water splitting process. Herein, the carrier dynamic kinetics of colloidal Co₃ O₄ quantum dots-Pt hetero-junctions is studied, which mimics the hydrogen reduction process during water splitting. It is showed that the quantum confinement effect induced by the small QD size raised the conduction band edge position of Co₃ O₄ QDs, so that the ligand-to-metal charge transfer from 2p state of oxygen to 3d state of Co²⁺ occurs, which is necessary for overall water splitting and cannot be achieved in Co₃ O₄ bulk crystals. The findings in this work provide insights of the photocatalytic mechanism of Co₃ O₄ catalysts and benefit rational design of Co₃ O₄ -based photocatalytic systems.
