Potential application of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) when it meets light

Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is a kind of typical two-dimensional (2D) material that has been increasingly developed alongside other 2D materials such as graphene, MXenes, and transition-metal dichalcogenide. However, its potential applications have not been widely whispered compared to those of other 2D materials. Using its distinctive properties, BiOI can be used for various applications, especially when it meets sunlight and other light-related electromagnetic waves. In this present review, we discuss the developments of BiOI and challenges in the applications for photodetector and light-assisted sensors, photovoltaic devices, optoelectronic logic devices, as well as photocatalysts. We start the discussion with a basic understanding and development of BiOI, crystal structure, and its properties. The synthesis and further development, such as green synthesis and its challenges in the synthesis-suited industry, as well as device integration, are also explained together with a plausible strategy to enhance the feasibility of BiOI for those various applications. We believe that the provided discussion and perspectives will not only promote BiOI to be one of the highly considered 2D materials but can also assist recent graduates in any materials science discipline and inform the senior scientists and industrial-based stakeholders of the latest advances in bismuth oxide and mixed-anion compounds.

Bibliometrics Analysis of Research Progress of Electrochemical Detection of Tetracycline Antibiotics

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum class of antibiotics. The use of excessive doses of tetracycline antibiotics can result in their residues in food, posing varying degrees of risk to human health. Therefore, the establishment of a rapid and sensitive field detection method for tetracycline residues is of great practical importance to improve the safety of food-derived animal foods. Electrochemical analysis techniques are widely used in the field of pollutant detection because of the simple detection principle, easy operation of the instrument, and low cost of analysis. In this review, we summarize the electrochemical detection of tetracycline antibiotics by bibliometrics. Unlike the previously published reviews, this article reviews and analyzes the development of this topic. The contributions of different countries and different institutions were analyzed. Keyword analysis was used to explain the development of different research directions. The results of the analysis revealed that developments and innovations in materials science can enhance the performance of electrochemical detection of tetracycline antibiotics. Among them, gold nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are the most used nanomaterials. Aptamer sensing strategies are the most favored methodologies in electrochemical detection of tetracycline antibiotics.

Few-layered Bi4O5I2 nanosheets enclosed by {1 0-1} facets with oxygen vacancies for highly-efficient removal of water contaminants

Few-layered Bi₄O₅I₂ nanosheets (FL-Bi₄O₅I₂) were synthesized by intergrowth with Bi₂O₂CO₃ under room temperature. The photoactivity of FL-Bi₄O₅I₂ was 2.5 and 9.5 times higher than that of Bi₄O₅I₂ nanoflakes (NF-Bi₄O₅I₂, about 30 nm thickness) and standard visible-light-driven N-TiO₂, respectively. Moreover, FL-Bi₄O₅I₂ exhibited a wide pH application range (3.0 - 10.0) and excellent photostability. The characterization results showed FL-Bi₄O₅I₂ was consisted of 5 - 8 layers with thickness of 4 - 7 nm and enclosed by {1 0 - 1} facets. The ultrathin characteristics could accelerate the charge transfer to the surface due to the shortened transport distance. Compared to NF-Bi₄O₅I₂, surface oxygen vacancies and the more negative CB potential were formed on FL-Bi₄O₅I₂. The photogenerated electrons were confirmed to be captured by surface oxygen vacancies to effectively reduce surface adsorbed O₂ into HO₂^•/O₂^•-, leaving more h⁺ to oxidize organic pollutants. This process was further facilitated by the more negative CB potential of FL-Bi₄O₅I₂, resulting in the highly efficient removal of pollutants.
