Directionally Tailoring Macroporous Honeycomb-Like Structured Carbon Nanofibers toward High-Capacitive Potassium Storage

Homologous Heterostructured NiS/NiS2 @C Hollow Ultrathin Microspheres with Interfacial Electron Redistribution for High-Performance Sodium Storage

Nickel sulfides with high theoretical capacity are considered as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs); however, their intrinsic poor electric conductivity, large volume change during charging/discharging, and easy sulfur dissolution result in inferior electrochemical performance for sodium storage. Herein, a hierarchical hollow microsphere is assembled from heterostructured NiS/NiS2 nanoparticles confined by in situ carbon layer (H-NiS/NiS2 @C) via regulating the sulfidation temperature of the precursor Ni-MOFs. The morphology of ultrathin hollow spherical shells and confinement of in situ carbon layer to active materials provide rich channels for ion/electron transfer and alleviate the effects of volume change and agglomeration of the material. Consequently, the as-prepared H-NiS/NiS2 @C exhibit superb electrochemical properties, satisfactory initial specific capacity of 953.0 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , excellent rate capability of 509.9 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 , and superior longtime cycling life with 433.4 mA h g-1 after 4500 cycles at 10 A g-1 . Density functional theory calculation shows that heterogenous interfaces with electron redistribution lead to charge transfer from NiS to NiS2 , and thus favor interfacial electron transport and reduce ion-diffusion barrier. This work provides an innovative idea for the synthesis of homologous heterostructures for high-efficiency SIB electrode materials.

Electrospun carbon-based nanomaterials for next-generation potassium batteries

Rechargeable potassium (K) batteries that are of low cost, with high energy densities and long cycle lives have attracted tremendous interest in affordable and large-scale energy storage. However, the large size of the K-ion leads to sluggish reaction kinetics and causes a large volume variation during the ion insertion/extraction processes, thus hindering the utilization of active electrode materials, triggering a serious structural collapse, and deteriorating the cycling performance. Therefore, the exploration of suitable materials/hosts that can reversibly and sustainably accommodate K-ions and host K metals are urgently needed. Electrospun carbon-based materials have been extensively studied as electrode/host materials for rechargeable K batteries owing to their designable structures, tunable composition, hierarchical pores, high conductivity, large surface areas, and good flexibility. Here, we present the recent developments in electrospun CNF-based nanomaterials for various K batteries (e.g., K-ion batteries, K metal batteries, K-chalcogen batteries), including their fabrication methods, structural modulation, and electrochemical performance. This Feature Article is expected to offer guidelines for the rational design of novel electrospun electrodes for the next-generation K batteries.

Rationally Tailoring Superstructured Hexahedron Composed of Defective Graphitic Nanosheets and Macropores: Realizing Durable and Fast Potassium Storage

Multipores engineering composed of micro/mesopores is an effective strategy to improve potassium storage performance via providing enormous adsorption sites and shortened ions diffusion distance. However, a detailed exploration of the role played by macropores in potassium storage is still lacking and has been barely reported until now. Herein, a superstructure carbon hexahedron (DGN-900) is synthesized using poly tannic acid (PTA) as precursor. Due to the spatially confined two-step local contraction of PTA along different directions and dimensions during pyrolysis, defective nanosheets with macropores are formed, while realizing a balance between defects content and graphitization degree by regulating temperature. The presence of macropores is conducive to accelerating electrolyte ions rapid infiltration within electrode, and its pore volume can accommodate electrode structure fluctuation upon cycling, while the most suitable ratio of defects to graphitic provides rich ions adsorption sites and sufficient electrons transfer channels, simultaneously. These advantages enable a prominent electrochemical performance in DGN-900 electrode, including high rate (202.9 mAh g^-1 at 2 A g^-1 ) and long cycling stability over 2000 cycles. This unique fabrication strategy, that is, defects engineering coupled with macropores structure, makes fast and durable potassium storage possible.

Highly efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate by biomass juncus derived carbon decorated with cobalt nanoparticles for the degradation of ofloxacin

The cobalt nanoparticles decorated biomass Juncus derived carbon (Co@JDC) was prepared by facile calcination strategy and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for eliminating ofloxacin (OFX) in the water environment. The results of catalytic experiments show that 97% of OFX degradation efficiency and 70.4% of chemical oxygen demand removal rate are obtained within 24 min at 0.1 g L^-1 Co@JDC, 0.2 g L^-1 PMS, 20 mg L^-1 OFX (100 mL), and pH = 7, which indicates that Co@JDC/PMS system exhibits excellent performance. Meanwhile, the experimental results of affect factor show that Co@JDC/PMS system can operate in a wider pH range (3-9) and Cl^-1, NO₃^-1, and SO₄^2- have an ignorable effect on OFX degradation. The radical identification experiments confirm that SO₄˙^-, ·OH, O₂˙^-, and ¹O₂ are involved in the process of PMS activation, especially SO₄˙^- and ¹O₂ are the main contributors. Furthermore, a possible PMS activation mechanism by Co@JDC was proposed and the degradation pathways of OFX were deduced. Finally, the stable catalytic activity, negligible leaching of Co²⁺, and the outstanding degradation efficiency for other antibiotics prove that Co@JDC possesses good stability and universality.

Exploration of bifunctional Vanadium-based Metal-Organic framework with double active centers for Potassium-ion batteries

Exploration of suitable electrode hosts with large open channels that can reversibly accommodate K⁺ with large radius have been extensively investigated. Nevertheless, the reported inorganic counterparts were inevitably restricted by the difficulty of large K⁺ diffusion capability in crystal structure and the huge volume change. Herein, we report a bifunctional vanadium-based metal-organic framework (MIL-47) with double active centers and larger lamellar spacing that could serve as both cathode and anode material, respectively by controlling the redox potential range in potassium-ion batteries. The results suggest that the stable K-storage mechanism is the reversible rearrangement of the conjugated carboxyl groups of organic terephthalic acid into enolate and the reversible redox activity of V ions, with the specific capacity of 272 mAh g^-1 (0.01-1.5 V) and 50 mAh g^-1 (1.5-3.8 V) at the current density of 10 mA g^-1 for MIL-47 anode and MIL-47 cathode, respectively. The unsaturated functional group of MIL-47 and the intermediate bridged V atom not only provide multi-dimensional channels for electron and ion transport but also stabilize its crystal structure. Additionally, a symmetric full-cell in potassium-ion batteries based on MIL-47 was constructed successfully by avoiding the utilization of K metal with safety concerns. Our results provide new insight into structure design for next-generation large-scale energy storage applications.

High-efficiency NO electroreduction to NH3 over honeycomb carbon nanofiber at ambient conditions

Electrocatalytic NO reduction is a promising technology for ambient NO removal with simultaneous production of highly value-added NH₃. Herein, we report that honeycomb carbon nanofiber coated on carbon paper acts as an efficient metal-free catalyst for ambient electroreduction of NO to NH₃. In 0.2 M Na₂SO₄ solution, such catalyst achieves an NH₃ yield of 22.35 μmol h^-1 cm^-2 with a high Faradaic efficiency of up to 88.33%. Impressively, it also shows excellent stability for 10-h continuous electrolysis. Theoretical calculations reveal that the most active center of functional groups is -OH group for NO reduction with a low energy barrier (ΔG of 0.29 eV) for the potential-determining step (*NO + H → *HNO).
