Fe2O3/NiO Interface for the Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution in Seawater and Domestic Sewage

Synergistically coupled CoMo/Fe2O3 electrocatalyst for highly efficient and stable overall water splitting

Constructing bifunctional non-precious metal electrocatalysts with advanced industrial value and excellent electrocatalytic performance to achieve efficient overall water splitting is important but difficult. Herein, a heterogeneous electrocatalyst comprising of CoMo alloys anchored Fe2O3 nanosheets was prepared by hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The strongly coupled interfaces between the CoMo alloys and Fe2O3 nanosheets promote charge redistribution, which could improve electron transfer efficiency and accelerate reaction kinetics, potentially optimizing reactant adsorption energy. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the construction of CoMo/Fe2O3/NF heterostructured catalyst facilitates to promote interfacial charge redistribution and enhance charge transfer capacity, thus boosting the catalytic performance. Benefiting from this, the optimal CoMo/Fe2O3/NF heterostructure demonstrates a minimal overpotential of 71 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for the HER and 266 mV at 50 mA cm-2 for the OER. Remarkably, the catalyst served as a bifunctional electrode for water splitting, resulting in a cell voltage down to 1.5 V at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. This research provides an effective way for the construction of non-precious iron oxides-based bifunctional electrocatalysts using alloy/metal oxide interfacial engineering strategy.

Crystalline Ru-Decorated MOF-Derived Amorphous CoMo-LDH Nanosheet Arrays as Bifunctional Catalysts for Overall Natural Seawater Electrolysis

The construction of an amorphous/crystalline heterostructure of MOF-derived electrocatalysts offers an intriguing pathway to improve hydrogen production efficiency, but it has received little attention. Here, we report crystalline Ru-decorated MOF-derived amorphous CoMo-LDH nanosheet arrays as highly active and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for natural seawater electrolysis. Benefiting from the abundant interfaces, the Ru-CoMo-LDH catalyst exhibits excellent activity toward OER under fresh and natural seawater, in particular; it requires only 257 and 406 mV overpotential at 10 and 500 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH + Seawater, outperforming the benchmark RuO2. In addition, this electrocatalyst is an eminently active and stable HER in various electrolytes, emphasizing its outstanding bifunctional capability. Strikingly, in full-cell overall water splitting in natural seawater test, Ru-CoMo-LDH ∥ Pt/C exhibits superior electrochemical behavior (i.e., overpotential of 1.5545 and 1.731 V to obtain the current density of 10 and 200 mA cm-2, respectively) and high stability. These excellent electrocatalytic activities highlighted the synergistic effects of intimated amorphous/crystalline junctions, which provide a rich population of exposed active sites and enhance electron transport. This, in turn, lowers the adsorption energy barrier of intermediates, leading to improved performance. Our work proves that designing an amorphous/crystalline heterointerface is a promising platform for further enhancing the hydrogen generation efficiency.

Optimizing magnetic, dielectric, and antimicrobial performance in chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3@NiO nanomagnetic composites

There is a growing interest in eco-friendly and cost-effective organic-inorganic nanocomposites due to their alignment with the principles of "green" chemistry, as well as their biocompatibility and non-toxicity. This study focused on producing Chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3@NiO nanomagnetic composites to improve the stability, dielectric properties, and antimicrobial effectiveness of these nanocomposite materials. The process involved synthesizing Fe2O3@NiO via sol-gel and polymerizing chitosan-PEG. The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, TEM, FTIR, optical, dielectric, and VSM. Incorporating Fe2O3@NiO significantly improved stability, and the interaction with Fe2O3 during the sol-gel process facilitated the formation of NiFe2O4 with an increase in the crystallinity within the chitosan-PEG matrix. The study examined optical and dielectric properties, highlighting that the 3 NiO-doped chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3 composites had high electrical conductivity (1.8 ∗ 10-3 S/cm) and a significant dielectric constant (106 at low frequencies). As the ratio of NiO NPs within the chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3 increases, the energy band gap of chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3 films decreases up to 3.7 eV. This decrease is owing to the quantum confinement effect. These composites also demonstrated improved antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus and higher activity in the presence of nanomagnetic particles. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of CS-PEG-Fe2O3/NiO NPs against (Bacillus cereus, M. luteus, S. aureus and (S. enterica, H. pylori, E. coli) were (22-35 mm) and (21-34 mm), respectively.

Challenges and progress in oxygen evolution reaction catalyst development for seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production

Production of green hydrogen on a large scale can negatively impact freshwater resources. Therefore, using seawater as an electrolyte in electrolysis is a desirable alternative to reduce costs and freshwater reliance. However, there are limitations to this approach, primarily due to the catalyst involved in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In seawater, the OER features sluggish kinetics and complicated chemical reactions that compete. This review first introduces the benefits and challenges of direct seawater electrolysis and then summarises recent research into cost-effective and durable OER electrocatalysts. Different modification methods for nickel-based electrocatalysts are thoroughly reviewed, and promising electrocatalysts that the authors believe deserve further exploration have been highlighted.

A Hierarchical CuO Nanowire@CoFe-Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheet Array as a High-Efficiency Seawater Oxidation Electrocatalyst

Seawater electrolysis has great potential to generate clean hydrogen energy, but it is a formidable challenge. In this study, we report CoFe-LDH nanosheet uniformly decorated on a CuO nanowire array on Cu foam (CuO@CoFe-LDH/CF) for seawater oxidation. Such CuO@CoFe-LDH/CF exhibits high oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalytic activity, demanding only an overpotential of 336 mV to generate a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline seawater. Moreover, it can operate continuously for at least 50 h without obvious activity attenuation.

Tunable d-band center of a NiFeMo alloy with enlarged lattice strain enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity for overall water-splitting

Developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions is prospective for reducing energy consumption during water electrolysis. In this work, we successfully synthesized nanocluster structure composites composed of NiFeMo alloys with controllable lattice strain by the electrodeposition method at room temperature. The unique structure of NiFeMo/SSM (stainless steel mesh) facilitates the exposure of abundant active sites and promotes mass transfer and gas exportation. The NiFeMo/SSM electrode exhibits a low overpotential of 86 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for the HER and 318 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 for the OER, and the assembled device reveals a low voltage of 1.764 V at 50 mA cm^-2. Moreover, both the experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the dual doping of Mo and Fe can induce the tunable lattice strain of nickel, which in turn changes the d-band center and electronic interaction of the catalytically active site, and finally enhances the HER and OER catalytic activity. This work may provide more options for the design and preparation of bifunctional catalysts based on non-noble metals.

Robust FeCoP nanoparticles grown on a rGO-coated Ni foam as an efficient oxygen evolution catalyst for excellent alkaline and seawater electrolysis

Electrochemical water splitting is a potential green hydrogen energy generation technique. With the shortage of fresh water, abundant seawater resources should be developed as the main raw material for water electrolysis. However, since the precipitation reaction of chloride ions in seawater will compete with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and corrode the catalyst, seawater electrolysis is restricted by the decrease in activity, low stability, and selectivity. Rational design and development of efficient and stable catalysts is the key to seawater electrolysis. Herein, a high-activity bimetallic phosphide FeCoP, grown on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-protected Ni Foam (NF) substrate using FeCo Prussian Blue Analogue (PBA) as a template, was designed for application in alkaline natural seawater electrolysis. The OER activity confirmed that the formed FeCoP@rGO/NF has high electrocatalytic performance. In 1 M KOH and natural alkaline seawater, the overpotential was only 257 mV and 282 mV under 200 mA cm^-2, respectively. It also demonstrated long-term stability up to 200 h. Therefore, this study provides new insight into the application of PBA as a precursor of bimetallic phosphide in the electrolysis of seawater at high current density.

Selectively Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution within Nanoscopic Channels Fitting a Specific Reaction Intermediate for Seawater Splitting

Abundant availability of seawater grants economic and resource-rich benefits to water electrolysis technology requiring high-purity water if undesired reactions such as chlorine evolution reaction (CER) competitive to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are suppressed. Inspired by a conceptual computational work suggesting that OER is kinetically improved via a double activation within 7 Å-gap nanochannels, RuO₂ catalysts are realized to have nanoscopic channels at 7, 11, and 14 Å gap in average (d_gap ), and preferential activity improvement of OER over CER in seawater by using nanochanneled RuO₂ is demonstrated. When the channels are developed to have 7 Å gap, the OER current is maximized with the overpotential required for triggering OER minimized. The gap value guaranteeing the highest OER activity is identical to the value expected from the computational work. The improved OER activity significantly increases the selectivity of OER over CER in seawater since the double activation by the 7 Å-nanoconfined environments to allow an OER intermediate (*OOH) to be doubly anchored to Ru and O active sites does not work on the CER intermediate (*Cl). Successful operation of direct seawater electrolysis with improved hydrogen production is demonstrated by employing the 7 Å-nanochanneled RuO₂ as the OER electrocatalyst.

Metal ferrites-based nanocomposites and nanohybrids for photocatalytic water treatment and electrocatalytic water splitting

Photocatalytic degradation is one of the most promising technologies available for removing a variety of synthetic and organic pollutants from the environmental matrices because of its high catalytic activity, reduced energy consumption, and low total cost. Due to its acceptable bandgap, broad light-harvesting efficiency, significant renewability, and stability, Fe₂O₃ has emerged as a fascinating material for the degradation of organic contaminants as well as numerous dyes. This study thoroughly reviewed the efficiency of Fe₂O₃-based nanocomposite and nanomaterials for water remediation. Iron oxide structure and various synthetic methods are briefly discussed. Additionally, the electrocatalytic application of Fe₂O₃-based nanocomposites, including oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and overall water splitting efficiency, was also highlighted to illustrate the great promise of these composites. Finally, the ongoing issues and future prospects are directed to fully reveal the standards of Fe₂O₃-based catalysts. This review is intended to disseminate knowledge for further research on the possible applications of Fe₂O₃ as a photocatalyst and electrocatalyst.

Recent Advances on Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Evolution Catalysts for Direct Seawater Splitting

Producing hydrogen via water electrolysis could be a favorable technique for energy conversion, but the freshwater shortage would inevitably limit the industrial application of the electrolyzers. Being an inexhaustible resource of water on our planet, seawater can be a promising alternative electrolyte for industrial hydrogen production. However, many challenges are hindering the actual application of seawater splitting, especially the competing reactions relating to chlorine at the anode that could severely corrode the catalysts. The execution of direct seawater electrolysis needs efficient and robust electrocatalysts that can prevent the interference of competing reactions and resist different impurities. In recent years, researchers have made great advances in developing high-efficiency electrocatalysts with improved activity and stability. This review will provide the macroscopic understanding of direct seawater splitting, the strategies for rational electrocatalyst design, and the development prospects of hydrogen production via seawater splitting. The nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts for stable seawater splitting and their catalytic mechanisms are emphasized to offer guidance for designing the efficient and robust electrocatalyst, so as to promote the production of green hydrogen via seawater splitting.
