Unidirectionally Driving Nanofluidic Transportation via an Asymmetric Textile Pump for Simultaneous Salt-Resistant Solar Desalination and Drenching-Induced Power Generation

A Transpiration-Driven Electrokinetic Power Generator with a Salt Pathway for Extended Service Life in Saltwater

To ensure prolonged functionality of transpiration-driven electrokinetic power generators (TEPGs) in saltwater environments, it is imperative to mitigate salt accumulation. This study presents a salt pathway transpiration-driven electrokinetic power generator (SPTEPG), incorporating MXene, graphene oxide (GO), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as active materials, along with cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as aqueous binders and nonwoven fabrics. This unique combination confers exceptional hydrophilicity and enhances the energy generation performance. When tested with deionized water, the SPTEPG achieved a maximum voltage of 0.6 V and a current of 4.2 μA. In simulated seawater conditions, the presence of conductive ions in the solution boosted these values to 0.64 V and 42 μA. The incorporation of the salt pathway mechanism facilitates the return of excess salt deposits to the bulk solution, thus extending the SPTEPG's service life in saltwater environments. This research offers a straightforward yet effective strategy for designing transpiration-driven power generators suitable for saline water applications.

All-In-One Evaporators for Efficient Solar-Driven Simultaneous Collection of Water and Electricity

The shortage of fossil fuels and freshwater resources has become a serious global issue. Using solar energy to extract clean water with a photothermal conversion technology is a green and sustainable desalination method. Integrated electricity generation during the desalination process maximizes energy utilization efficiency. Herein, a solar-driven steam and electricity generation (SSEG) system based on an all-in-one evaporator is prepared via a scalable technology. Carbon black is selected as the absorber for solar energy harvesting as well as the functional substance for simultaneous electricity generation. Fabric substrate with flexible structure, porous channel, and capillary effect is vital for directional brine supply, multiple solar absorption, and thermal management. The high evaporation rate (1.87 kg m-2  h-1 ) and voltage output (324 mV) can be achieved with an all-in-one device. The stable electricity output can be maintained over 40000 s. The SSEG performance remains constant after 15 operation cycles or 20 wash cycles. The integrated device balances excellent effectiveness and practicality, providing a viable path for clean desalination and electricity generation.

Natural Cellulose Fiber-Derived Photothermal Aerogel for Efficient and Sustainable Solar Desalination

Aerogels are becoming a promising platform to fabricate photothermal materials for use in solar steam generation (SSG), which have remarkable application potential in solar desalination, due to their excellent thermal management, salt resistance, and considerable water evaporation rate. In this work, a novel photothermal material is fabricated by forming a suspension between sugarcane bagasse fibers (SBF) and poly(vinyl alcohol), tannic acid (TA), and Fe³⁺ solutions via hydrogen bonds of hydroxyl groups. After freeze drying, the fabricated SBF aerogel-based photothermal (SBFAP) material possesses a 3D interconnected porous microstructure, which could enhance water transportation ability, reduce thermal conductivity, and quickly dissolve salt crystals on the SBFAP surface. Thanks to the formation of micro/nanosized complexes between TA and Fe³⁺ ions on the SBFAP material, the SBFAP exhibits high light capture and water evaporation rate (2.28 kg m^-2 h^-1). In particular, due to strong hydrogen bonding and the SBF, the SBFAP material is reinforced, thereby exhibiting excellent structural stability in seawater. Moreover, the high salt tolerance of SBFAP favors its high desalination performance for at least 76 days of continuous evaporation under actual conditions. This research paves the way for the fabrication of natural cellulose fiber-based photothermal materials for application in solar desalination.

A Zero-Energy, Zero-Emission Air Conditioning Fabric

High indoor humidity/temperature pose serious public health threat and hinder industrial productivity, thus adversely impairing the wellness and economy of the entire society. Traditional air conditioning systems for dehumidification and cooling involve significant energy consumption and have accelerated the greenhouse effect. Here, this work demonstrates an asymmetric bilayer cellulose-based fabric that enables solar-driven continuous indoor dehumidification, transpiration-driven power generation, and passive radiative cooling using the same textile without any energy input. The multimode fabric (ABMTF) consists of a cellulose moisture absorption-evaporation layer (ADF) and a cellulose acetate (CA) radiation layer. The ABMTF exhibits a high moisture absorption capacity and water evaporation rate, which quickly reduces the indoor relative humidity (RH) to a comfortable level (40-60% RH) under 1 sun illumination. The evaporation-driven continuous capillary flow generates a maximum open-circuit voltage (V_oc ) of 0.82 V, and a power density (P) up to 1.13 µW cm^-3 . When a CA layer with high solar reflection and mid-infrared (mid-IR) emissivity faces outward, it realizes subambient cooling of ≈12 °C with average cooling power of ≈106 W m^-2 at midday under radiation of 900 W m^-2 . This work brings a new perspective to develop the next-generation, high performance environmentally friendly materials for sustainable moisture/thermal management and self-powered applications.

Electrostatically Assisted Construction Modified MXene-IL-Based Nanofluids for Photothermal Conversion

Solar energy, as renewable energy, has paid extensive attention for solar thermal utilization due to its unique characteristics such as rich resources, easy access, clean, and pollution-free. Among them, solar thermal utilization is the most extensive one. Nanofluid-based direct absorption solar collectors (DASCs), as an important alternative method, can further improve the solar thermal efficiency. Notably, the stability of photothermal conversion materials and flowing media is critical to the performance of DASC. Herein, we first proposed novel Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids by the electrostatic interaction, which consists of functional Ti3C2Tx modified with PDA and PEI as a photothermal conversion material and ionic liquid with low viscosity as the flow medium. Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids exhibit excellent cycle stability, wide spectrum, and efficient solar energy absorption performance. Besides, Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids maintain liquid state in a range of -80 to 200 °C, and its viscosity was as low as 0.3 Pa·s at 0 °C. Moreover, the equilibrium temperature of Ti3C2Tx@PDA-IL at a very low mass fraction of 0.04% reached 73.9 °C under 1 Sun, indicating an excellent photothermal conversion performance. Furthermore, the application of nanofluids in photosensitive inks has been preliminarily explored, which is expected to play a role in the fields of injectable biomedical materials and photo/electric double-generation thermal and hydrophobic anti ice coatings.

Synergistic Solar-Driven Freshwater Generation and Electricity Output Empowered by Wafer-Scale Nanostructured Silicon

Electricity generation triggered by the ubiquitous water evaporation process provides an intriguing way to harvest energy from water. Meanwhile, natural water evaporation is also a fundamental way to obtain fresh water for human beings. Here, a wafer-scale nanostructured silicon-based device that takes advantage of its well-aligned configuration that simultaneously realizes solar steam generation (SSG) for freshwater collection and hydrovoltaic effect generation for electricity output is developed. An ingenious porous, black carbon nanotube fabric (CNF) electrode endows the device with sustainable water self-pumping capability, excellent durable conductivity, and intense solar spectrum harvesting. A combined device based on the CNF electrode integrated with nanostructured silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWs) provided an aligned numerous surface-to-volume water evaporation interface that enables a recorded continuous short-circuit current 8.65 mA and a water evaporation rate of 1.31 kg m^-2 h^-1 under one sun illumination. Such wafer-scale SiNWs-based SSG and hydrovoltaic integration devices would unchain the bottleneck of the weak and discontinuous electrical output of hydrovoltaic devices, which inspires other sorts of semiconductor-based hydrovoltaic device designs to target superior performance.

Highly Effective Multifunctional Solar Evaporator with Scaffolding Structured Carbonized Wood and Biohydrogel

A solar evaporator that utilizes solar radiation energy can be a renewable approach to deal with energy crisis and fresh water shortage. In this study, a solar evaporator was prepared by assembling composite carbonized wood of Melaleuca Leucadendron L. and biobased hydrogel. The multilayer MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) was embedded in the scaffolding structure of the wood to form composite carbonized wood, where the loose and ordered scaffolding structure of the carbonized wood significantly improves the efficiency of water transportation with increased capillary force. The MXene adsorbed in the carbonized wood has high binding energy with water molecules, leading to reduction of vaporization enthalpy and contact angle. Moreover, the addition of MXene can improve the light absorbance, especially for the infrared and ultraviolet light bands. The hydrogel was fabricated by crosslinking konjac glucomannan and sodium alginate polysaccharides with Ca²⁺, and it has a lower thermal conductivity than water and improves the evaporation efficiency by regulating the temperature distribution and concentrating the heat on the surface of the evaporator. This solar evaporator has an evaporation rate of 3.71 kg·m^-2·h^-1 and an evaporation efficiency of 129.64% under 2 sun illumination and is available to generate an open-circuit voltage of 1.8 mV after a 20 min hydrovoltaic, demonstrating a high performance and versatility. Also, experiments and numerical simulation were carried out to understand the mechanism and design principles of this solar evaporators.

Thermal Properties of MXenes and Relevant Applications

The properties and applications of MXenes (a family of layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides) have aroused enormous research interests for a decade since the successful synthesis of few-layer transition metal carbides in 2011. Though MXenes, as the building blocks, have already been applied in various fields (such as wearable electronics) owing to the distinctive optical, mechanical and electrical properties, their thermal stability and intrinsic thermal properties were less thoroughly investigated compared to other characteristics in early reports. The pioneering theoretical prediction of the thermoelectric nature of MXenes was performed in 2013 while the first experiment-based report concerning the degradation behavior of the 2D structure at elevated temperatures in a controlled atmosphere was published in 2015, followed by numerous discoveries regarding the thermal properties of MXenes. Herein, after a brief description of the synthesis, this Review summarized the latest insights into the thermal stability and thermophysical properties of MXenes, and further associated these unique properties with relevant applications by multiple examples. Finally, current hurdles and challenges in this field were provided along with some advices on potential research directions in the future.

Highly efficient and salt rejecting solar evaporation via a wick-free confined water layer

Recent advances in thermally localized solar evaporation hold significant promise for vapor generation, seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and medical sterilization. However, salt accumulation is one of the key bottlenecks for reliable adoption. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient (>80% solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency) and salt rejecting (20 weight % salinity) solar evaporation by engineering the fluidic flow in a wick-free confined water layer. With mechanistic modeling and experimental characterization of salt transport, we show that natural convection can be triggered in the confined water. More notably, there exists a regime enabling simultaneous thermal localization and salt rejection, i.e., natural convection significantly accelerates salt rejection while inducing negligible additional heat loss. Furthermore, we show the broad applicability by integrating this confined water layer with a recently developed contactless solar evaporator and report an improved efficiency. This work elucidates the fundamentals of salt transport and offers a low-cost strategy for high-performance solar evaporation.

Solar evaporation is promising for sustainable freshwater production but typically limited by salt accumulation. Here, by manipulating natural convection, authors develop a wick-free confined water layer that enables highly efficient and salt rejecting solar evaporation.
