Efficient Gold Recovery from Cyanide Solution Using Magnetic Activated Carbon

Enhanced Removal of Ultratrace Levels of Gold from Wastewater Using Sulfur-Rich Covalent Organic Frameworks

In view of the increasing global demand and consumption of gold, there is a growing need and effort to extract gold from alternative sources besides conventional mining, e.g., from water. This drive is mainly due to the potential benefits for the economy and the environment as these sources contain large quantities of the precious metal that can be utilized. Wastewater is one of these valuable sources in which the gold concentration can be in the ppb range. However, the effective selective recovery and recycling of ultratrace amounts of this metal remain a challenge. In this article, we describe the development of a covalent imine-based organic framework with pores containing thioanisole functional groups (TTASDFPs) formed by the condensation of a triazine-based triamine and an aromatic dialdehyde. The sulfur-functionalized pores served as effective chelating agents to bind Au3+ ions, as evidenced by the uptake of more than 99% of the 9 ppm Au3+ solution within 2 min. This is relatively fast kinetics compared with other adsorbents reported for gold adsorption. TTASDFP also showed a high removal capacity of 245 mg·g-1 and a clear selectivity toward gold ions. More importantly, the material can capture gold at concentrations as low as 1 ppb.

Solvothermal Preparation of Microporous Polyureas for Au(III) Adsorption

The enrichment and recovery of gold from wastewater are an alternative method to obtain this noble metal, which benefits reducing hazardous emissions from the conventional ore mining process and reserving natural gold for sustainable development. Inspired by our previous work (Lei et al., Macromol. Rapid Comm. 2022, 2200712), four families of microporous polyureas (mPPUs) with a large surface area (690 m2 g-1) and abundant heteroatom sites have been prepared via the factor-optimized solvothermal protocol. The resultant sample NPU-A starting from 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate (NDI) and tri(4-aminophenyl) amine (TAPA) exhibits the maximum Au(III) adsorption capacity of 1300 mg g-1 and high selectivity even when the Au(III) concentration is as low as 0.1 mg L-1. This study not only demonstrates the robustness of the high-throughput synthetic strategy but also promotes the investigation of the structure-activity correlation between the mPPU chemical structure and Au(III) adsorption performance.

Porous organic polycarbene nanotrap for efficient and selective gold stripping from electronic waste

The role of N-heterocyclic carbene, a well-known reactive site, in chemical catalysis has long been studied. However, its unique binding and electron-donating properties have barely been explored in other research areas, such as metal capture. Herein, we report the design and preparation of a poly(ionic liquid)-derived porous organic polycarbene adsorbent with superior gold-capturing capability. With carbene sites in the porous network as the "nanotrap", it exhibits an ultrahigh gold recovery capacity of 2.09 g/g. In-depth exploration of a complex metal ion environment in an electronic waste-extraction solution indicates that the polycarbene adsorbent possesses a significant gold recovery efficiency of 99.8%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy along with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals that the high performance of the polycarbene adsorbent results from the formation of robust metal-carbene bonds plus the ability to reduce nearby gold ions into nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations indicate that energetically favourable multinuclear Au binding enhances adsorption as clusters. Life cycle assessment and cost analysis indicate that the synthesis of polycarbene adsorbents has potential for application in industrial-scale productions. These results reveal the potential to apply carbene chemistry to materials science and highlight porous organic polycarbene as a promising new material for precious metal recovery.

MOF-Derived Robust and Synergetic Acid Sites Inducing C-N Bond Disruption for Energy-Efficient CO2 Desorption

Amine-based scrubbing technique is recognized as a promising method of capturing CO₂ to alleviate climate change. However, the less stability and poor acidity of solid acid catalysts (SACs) limit their potential to further improve amine regeneration activity and reduce the energy penalty. To address these challenges, here, we introduce two-dimensional (2D) cobalt-nitrogen-doped carbon nanoflakes (Co-N-C NSs) driven by a layered metal-organic framework that work as SACs. The designed 2D Co-N-C SACs can exhibit promising stability, superhydrophilic surface, and acidity. Such 2D structure also contains well-confined Co-N₄ Lewis acid sites and -OH Brønsted acid sites to have a synergetic effect on C-N bond disruption and significantly increase CO₂ desorption rate by 281% and reduce the reaction temperatures to 88 °C, minimizing water evaporation by 20.3% and subsequent regeneration energy penalty by 71.7% compared to the noncatalysis.

Simultaneous Separation and Recovery of Gold and Copper from Electronic Waste Enabled by an Asymmetric Electrochemical System

Exploiting efficient strategies for the selective separation and extraction of valuable metals from e-waste is in urgent demand to offset the ever-increasing depletion of metal resources, satisfy the sustainable supply of metal resources, and reduce the environmental impact from toxic metals. Herein, an asymmetric electrochemical system, constructed by polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers grown on carbon cloth (CC) and CC as the respective counter and working electrodes, is presented for the simultaneous and selective extraction of gold and copper from e-waste leachate solution. Harnessing the established CC/PANI//CC system, CC/PANI as the anode electrode is capable of selectively and rapidly extracting gold with high efficiency, accompanied by excellent reusability. Meanwhile, cathodic CC electrode is found to achieve almost 100% recovery of copper at a voltage of -1.2 V. Furthermore, the feasibility of the proposed asymmetric electrochemical system is further exemplified in waste central processing unit (CPU) leaching solution, enabling to recover simultaneously gold and copper with high purity. This work will provide meaningful guidance for simultaneous separation and recovery of multiple valuable metals from real e-waste.
