Janus Metal-Organic Frameworks/Wood Aerogel Composites for Boosting Catalytic Performance by Le Châtelier's Principle

Recent Progress in MOF-Aerogel Fabrication and Applications

Recent advancements in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) underscore their significant potential in chemical and materials research, owing to their remarkable properties and diverse structures. Despite challenges like intrinsic brittleness, powdered crystalline nature, and limited stability impeding direct applications, MOF-based aerogels have shown superior performance in various areas, particularly in water treatment and contaminant removal. This review highlights the latest progress in MOF-based aerogels, with a focus on hybrid systems incorporating materials like graphene, carbon nanotube, silica, and cellulose in MOF aerogels, which enhance their functional properties. The manifold advantages of MOF-based aerogels in energy storage, adsorption, and catalysis are discussed, with an emphasizing on their improved stability, processability, and ease of handling. This review aims to unlock the potential of MOF-based aerogels and their real-world applications. Aerogels are expected to reshape the technological landscape of MOFs through enhanced stability, adaptability, and efficiency.

Achieving ultrahigh uranium/vanadium selectivity of poly(amidoxime) via coupling MXene-enabled strong intermolecular interaction and separated photothermal interface

Poly(amidoxime) (PAO) has been recognized as the most potential candidate for extracting uranium from seawater, owing to its merits of outstanding uranium affinity, low cost, and large-scale production. Despite remarkable achievements, existing PAO sorbents suffer from unsatisfactory uranium extraction efficiency and selectivity, as imposed by the inherently sluggish uranium adsorption kinetics and inevitable spatial configuration transition of amidoxime, which diminishes uranium affinity. Herein, we discover a facile and integrated design to elaborate a PAO/MXene nanocomposite that delivers ultrahigh and durable uranium/vanadium (U/V) selectivity. The key to our design lies in harnessing MXene-enabled strong intermolecular interactions to PAO to minimize the spatial configuration transition of amidoxime and stabilizing its superior uranium affinity, as well as creating a separated photothermal interface to maximize temperature-strengthened affinity for uranium over vanadium. Such a synergetic effect allows the nanocomposite to acquire over a 4-fold improvement in U/V selectivity compared to that of pure PAO as well as an unprecedented distribution coefficient of uranium compared to most state-of-the-art sorbents. We further demonstrate that our nanocomposite exhibits durable U/V selectivity with negligible attenuation and good antibacterial ability even in long-term operation. The design concept and extraordinary performance in this study bring PAO-based sorbents a step closer to practical uranium extraction from seawater.

Spaced-Confined Janus Engineering Enables Controlled Ion Transport Channels and Accelerated Kinetics for Secondary Ion Batteries

The large grain boundary resistance between different components of the anode electrode easily leads to the low ion transport efficiency and poor electrochemical performance of lithium-/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). To address the issue, a Janus heterointerface with a Mott-Schottky structure is proposed to optimize the interface atomic structure, weaken interatomic resistance, and improve ion transport kinetics. Herein, Janus Co/Co2P@carbon-nanotubes@core-shell (Janus Co/Co2P@CNT-CS) refined urchin-like architecture derived from metal-organic frameworks is reported via a coating-phosphating process, where the Janus Co/Co2P heterointerface nanoparticles are confined in carbon nanotubes and a core-shell polyhedron. Such a Janus Co/Co2P heterointerface shows the strong built-in electric field, facilitating the controllable ion transport channels and the high ion transport efficiency. The Janus Co/Co2P@CNT-CS refined urchin-like architecture composed of a core-shell structure and the grafting carbon nanotubes enhances the structure stability and electronic conductivity. Benefiting from the spaced-confined Janus heterointerface engineering and synergistic effects between the core-shell structure and the grafting carbon nanotubes, the Janus Co/Co2P@CNT-CS refined urchin-like architecture demonstrates the fast ion transport rate and excellent pseudocapacitance performance for LIBs/SIBs. In this case, the Janus Co/Co2P@CNT-CS refined urchin-like architecture shows high specific capacities of 709 mA h g-1 (200 cycles) and 203 mA h g-1 (300 cycles) at a current density of 500 mA g-1 for LIBs/SIBs, respectively.

Green synthesis of metal-organic framework loaded dexamethasone on wood aerogels for enhanced cranial bone regeneration

Bone defects have attracted increasing attention in clinical settings. To date, there have been no effective methods to repair defective bones. Balsa wood aerogels are considered as an excellent source of chemicals for chemical modification to facilitate the in situ immobilization of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8. Furthermore, dexamethasone has received considerable attention for bone tissue engineering. In this study, for the first time, a simple but effective one-pot method for developing a novel zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 with different concentrations of dexamethasone was developed. These findings illustrate that the novel scaffold has a significant positive impact on osteogenic differentiation in vitro and repairs defects in vivo, suggesting that it can be used in bone tissue engineering.

Task-Specific Janus Materials in Heterogeneous Catalysis

Janus materials are anisotropic nano- and microarchitectures with two different faces consisting of distinguishable or opposite physicochemical properties. In parallel with the discovery of new methods for the fabrication of these materials, decisive progress has been made in their application, for example, in biological science, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, and, more recently, in battery technology. This Minireview systematically covers recent and significant achievements in the application of task-specific Janus nanomaterials as heterogeneous catalysts in various types of chemical reactions, including reduction, oxidative desulfurization and dye degradation, asymmetric catalysis, biomass transformation, cascade reactions, oxidation, transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, electro- and photocatalytic reactions, as well as gas-phase reactions. Finally, an outlook on possible future applications is given.
