Application of Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy in Revealing Critical Chemical Processes and Phenomena of Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion

Enhancing the Electrochemical Performances of Disordered Li1.23Ni0.3Nb0.3Fe0.16O0.85F0.15 Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries by LiNbOx Coating

For the next generation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), it is primary to seek high capacity and long-lifetime electrode materials. Li-excess disordered rock-salt structure (DRS) cathodes have gained much attention due to their high specific capacity. However, Li-excess can lead to a decrease in the structural stability of an electrode material. A new Li-rich DRS oxyfluorides, Li1.23Ni0.3Nb0.3Fe0.16O0.85F0.15 (F0.15) with a series amounts of LiNbOx (LN) coating (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt % denoted as F0.15-LN0, F0.15-LN5, F0.15-LN10, and F0.15-LN15, respectively), are successfully synthesized and evaluated as cathode materials in LIBs. Among them, F0.15-LN10 exhibits the highest initial discharge specific capacity of 296.1 mAh g-1 (at a current density of 20 mA g-1) with the capacity retention rate of 14% higher than that of the uncoated F0.15 after 80 cycles. Even at 300 mA g-1, F0.15-LN10 still delivers the highest discharge specific capacity of 130 mAh g-1. After 20 cycles, the charge-transfer impedance of F0.15-LN10 remained the smallest. The characterizations indicate that LN coating reduces the surface polarization of the cathode materials, slows the interfacial side reactions between the electrolyte and the electrode, and speeds up the Li+ diffusion. These results demonstrate that LN coating is an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical performance.

Toward Operando Characterization of Interphases in Batteries

Electrode/electrolyte interfaces are the most important and least understood components of Li-ion and next-generation batteries. An improved understanding of interphases in batteries will undoubtedly lead to breakthroughs in the field. Traditionally, evaluating those interphases involves using ex situ surface sensitive and/or imaging techniques. Due to their very dynamic and reactive nature, ex situ sample manipulation is undesirable. From this point of view, operando surface sensitive techniques represent a major opportunity to push boundaries in battery development. While numerous bulk spectroscopic, scattering, and imaging techniques are well established and widely used, surface sensitive operando techniques remain challenging and, to a larger extent, restricted to the model systems. Here, we give a perspective on techniques with the potential to characterize solid/liquid interfaces in both model and realistic battery configurations. The focus is on techniques that provide chemical and structural information at length and time scales relevant for the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and evolution, while also probing representative electrode areas. We highlight the following techniques: vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), neutron and X-ray reflectometry, and grazing incidence scattering techniques. Comprehensive overviews, as well as promises and challenges, of these techniques when used operando on battery interphases are discussed in detail.

Methodologies for Operando ATR-IR Spectroscopy of Magnesium Battery Electrolytes

We explore the suitability of operando attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy methodologies for the study of organoaluminate electrolytes for Mg battery applications. The "all-phenyl complex" in tetrahydrofuran (THF), with the molecular structure [Mg₂Cl₃·6THF]⁺[AlPh₄]^-, is used as an exemplar electrolyte to compare two different spectroelectrochemical cell configurations. In one case, a Pt gauze is used as a working electrode, while in the second case, a thin (∼10 nm) Pt film working electrode is deposited directly on the surface of the ATR crystal. Spectroscopic measurements indicate substantial differences in the ATR-IR response for the two configurations, reflecting the different spatial arrangements of the working electrode with respect to the ATR sampling volume. The relative merits and potential pitfalls associated with the two approaches are discussed.

Unraveling the Nature and Role of Layered Cation Ordering in Cation-Disordered Rock-Salt Cathodes

Cation-disordered rock salts (DRXs), a new class of cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, have attracted a great amount of attention in recent years due to their fascinatingly simple cubic structure, highly diverse composition, and great electrochemical performance. As cations in DRXs are randomly distributed in a long range, how the cations are spatially arranged is an intriguing question for the community of solid-state materials chemistry. In this work, we report the vibrational structure of a series of Mn- and Fe-based DRXs with well-controlled compositions and reveal significant layered-like cation ordering in the DRXs. A scheme is proposed to describe how the layered-like anisotropy could exist in rock salt structures with an overall cubic diffraction pattern. Furthermore, we raise a model of Li-ion transport based on the proposed scheme, which complements the theory of Li percolation in DRXs. The electrochemical behavior of the DRX cathodes used in the study supports the scheme and clearly demonstrates the role of layered anisotropy in the battery performance of DRXs.

Molecular vibrational imaging at nanoscale

The demand to visualize the spatial distribution of chemical species based on vibrational spectra is rapidly increasing. Driven by such a need, various Raman and infrared spectro-microscopies with a nanometric spatial resolution have been developed over the last two decades. Despite rapid progress, a large gap still exists between the general needs and what these techniques can achieve. This Perspective highlights the key challenges and recent breakthroughs of the two vibrational nano-imaging techniques, scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy and tip-enhanced Raman scattering.
