Several Triazine-Based Small Molecules Assisted in the Preparation of High-Performance and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells by Trap Passivation and Heterojunction Engineering

Phenanthrothiophene-Triazine Star-Shaped Discotic Liquid Crystals: Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescence Properties

Lipophilic biphenylthiophene- and phenanthrothiophene-triazine compounds, BPTTn and CPTTn, respectively, were prepared by a tandem procedure involving successive Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and Scholl cyclodehydrogenation reactions. These compounds display photoluminescence in solution and in thin film state, solvatochromism with increasing solvent's polarity, as well as acidochromism and metal ion recognition stimuli-responsive fluorescence. Protonation of BPTT10 and CPTT10 by trifluoroacetic acid results in fluorescence quenching, which is reversibly restored once treated with triethylamine (ON-OFF switch). DFT computational studies show that intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) phenomena occurs for both molecules, and reveal that protonation enhances the electron-withdrawing ability of the triazine core and reduces the band gap. This acidochromic behavior was applied to a prototype fluorescent anti-counterfeiting device. They also specifically recognize Fe3+ through coordination, and the recognition mechanism is closely related to the photoinduced electron transfer between Fe3+ and BPTT10/CPTT10. CPTTn self-assemble into columnar rectangular (Colrec) mesophase, which can be modulated by oleic acid via the formation of a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular liquid crystal hexagonal Colhex mesophase. Finally, CPTTn also form organic gels in alkanes at low critical gel concentration (3.0 mg/mL). Therefore, these star-shaped triazine molecules possess many interesting features and thus hold great promises for information processing, liquid crystal semiconductors and organogelators.

Improving the performance of perovskite solar cells using a dual-hole transport layer

The energy loss (Eloss) caused by inefficient charge transfer and large energy level offset at the buried interface can easily restrict the performance of p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). In this study, the utilization of poly-TPD and P3CT-N as a dual-hole transporting layer (HTLs) was implemented in a sequential manner. This approach aimed to improve the charge transfer efficiency of the HTL and mitigate charge recombination at the interface between the HTL and PVK. The results showed that this strategy also could achieve more suitable energy levels, improve the quality of the perovskite film layer, and ultimately enhance the device's stability. IPVSCs employing the dual-HTLs approach exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency of 19.85%, and the open-circuit voltage increased to 1.09 V from 1.00 V. This study offers a straightforward and efficient approach to boost the device performance by minimizing Eloss and reducing the buried interfacial defects. The findings underscore the potential of employing a dual-HTL strategy as a promising pathway for further advancements in PVSCs.

Understanding the Trap Characteristics of Perovskite Solar Cells via Drive-Level Capacitance Profiling

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are gaining significant interest as the future of photovoltaics owing to their superior performance and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, traps in PSCs have emerged as issues that adversely affect the efficiency and stability of the devices. In this study, the methylammonium chloride (MACl) additive and phenyltrimethylammonium iodide (PTMAI) posttreatment were applied to passivate bulk and surface defects. Furthermore, variations of the traps' quantitative spatial arrangement have been monitored by using the drive-level capacitance profiling (DLCP) analysis. A similar magnitude of trap reduction was observed for the bulk perovskite layer and two interfaces (electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite and hole transport layer (HTL)/perovskite) with an optimal concentration of the MACl additive. However, the effect of perovskite posttreatment in reducing the trap density was much more noticeable at the HTL/perovskite interface compared to the bulk and ETL/perovskite regions. This observation was reinforced by the outcomes of the 500 h thermal stability tests at 60 °C from seven independent batches, which demonstrated a substantial suppression of trap accumulation, particularly at the HTL/perovskite interface, by an order of magnitude.
