Piezoelectric Peptide Nanotube Substrate Sensors Activated through Sound Wave Energy

The use of sustainable and safe materials is increasingly in demand for the creation of photonic-based technology. Piezoelectric peptide nanotubes make up a class of safe and sustainable materials. We show that these materials can generate piezoelectric charge through the deformation of oriented molecular dipoles when the tube length is flexed through the application of sound energy. Through the combination of peptide nanotubes with plasmon active nanomaterials, harvesting of low-frequency acoustic sound waves was achieved. This effect was applied to boost surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal detection of analytes, including glucose. This work demonstrates the potential of utilizing sound to boost sensing by using piezoelectric materials.

Helical-Like Assembly of Nateglinide as Coating for Oral Delivery of Insulin and Their Synergistic Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus

Oral delivery of antidiabetic active components promises to free millions of people from daily suffering who require routine injections. However, oral insulin (Ins) and other short-acting compounds such as nateglinide (NG) in harsh gastrointestinal tract still face great challenging, including low bioavailability, and rapid elimination. In this study, inspired by the self-assembly of phenylalanine-based peptides in nature, it is showed that NG a small phenylalanine derivative, assembles into left-handed helical nanofibers in the presence of Ca2+ . These helical NG nanofibers functioned as a coating layer on the surface of Ca2+ -linked alginate (Alg) microgels for the effective encapsulation of Ins. As expected, the sustained release and prolonged circulation of Ins and NG from the Ins-loading Alg/NG microgels (Ins@Alg/NG) in the intestinal tract synergistically maintain a relatively normal blood glucose level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice after oral administration of Ins@Alg/NG. This further confirms that Ins@Alg/NG ameliorated Ins resistance mainly through activating Insreceptor substrate 1 (IRS1), protein kinase B (AKT), and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), as well as by repressing glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β). The strategy of using the assembly of NG as a coating achieves the oral delivery of insulin and showcases a potential for the treatment of diabetes.

Variational Mode Decomposition for Raman Spectral Denoising

As a fast and non-destructive spectroscopic analysis technique, Raman spectroscopy has been widely applied in chemistry. However, noise is usually unavoidable in Raman spectra. Hence, denoising is an important step before Raman spectral analysis. A novel spectral denoising method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) was introduced to solve the above problem. The spectrum is decomposed into a series of modes (uk) by VMD. Then, the high-frequency noise modes are removed and the remaining modes are reconstructed to obtain the denoised spectrum. The proposed method was verified by two artificial noised signals and two Raman spectra of inorganic materials, i.e., MnCo ISAs/CN and Fe-NCNT. For comparison, empirical mode decomposition (EMD), Savitzky-Golay (SG) smoothing, and discrete wavelet transformation (DWT) are also investigated. At the same time, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was introduced as evaluation indicators to verify the performance of the proposed method. The results show that compared with EMD, VMD can significantly improve mode mixing and the endpoint effect. Moreover, the Raman spectrum by VMD denoising is more excellent than that of EMD, SG smoothing and DWT in terms of visualization and SNR. For the small sharp peaks, some information is lost after denoising by EMD, SG smoothing, DWT and VMD while VMD loses fewest information. Therefore, VMD may be an alternative method for Raman spectral denoising.

Material design, development, and trend for surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful and non-invasive spectroscopic technique that can provide rich and specific chemical fingerprint information for various target molecules through effective SERS substrates. In view of the strong dependence of the SERS signals on the properties of the SERS substrates, design, exploration, and construction of novel SERS-active nanomaterials with low cost and excellent performance as the SERS substrates have always been the foundation and the top priority for the development and application of the SERS technology. This review specifically focuses on the extensive progress made in the SERS-active nanomaterials and their enhancement mechanism since the first discovery of SERS on the nanostructured plasmonic metal substrates. The design principles, unique functions, and influencing factors on the SERS signals of different types of SERS-active nanomaterials are highlighted, and insight into their future challenge and development trends is also suggested. It is highly expected that this review could benefit a complete understanding of the research status of the SERS-active nanomaterials and arouse the research enthusiasm for them, leading to further development and wider application of the SERS technology.

Study of Phenol Red Photocatalytic Decomposition on KBrO3-Supported TiO2 Nanoparticles for Wastewater Treatment

In this study, the enhanced photodegradation of a high-concentration phenol red (PR) using very fine TiO2 nanocrystals by adding a KBrO3 electron acceptor was reported for the first time. The structural study on TiO2 nanocrystals using HRTEM, XRD, Raman, and EDX was performed and it confirmed the anatase phase of TiO2 nanocrystals. UV–Vis absorbance of 20 mg.L−1 PR was measured and the photodegradation was extracted. The KBrO3 concentration effects exhibited an important enhancement in the degradation of PR dye. The efficiency of PR was increased during 110 min from 75% of pure TiO2 to 92% and 98% of TiO2 with 1 mg and 5 mg KBrO3, respectively. For different samples, a first-order kinetic of dye degradation is confirmed. The instantaneous amount of degraded dye increased from 150 to 180 and 197 mg/g TiO2 with 1 mg and 5 mg KBrO3, respectively. The mechanism of the photodegradation reaction confirms the effect of OH- radicals on increasing the photocatalytic activities. The addition of electron acceptors KBrO3 improved the photocatalysis rate, where it prevented e-h recombination through conduction band electron capture, which increases the concentration of hydroxyl radicals. The proposed mechanism and results were supported by photocurrent measurements and a Raman spectra analysis of the final photodegraded products. The photocurrent of TiO2 was observed at 1.2 µA, which was significantly improved up to 13.2, and 21.3 µA with the addition of 1 mg and 5 mg of KBrO3. The Raman spectra of the final products confirmed that SO42− and carbons are byproducts of PR degradation.
