Engineering the Electronic Structures of Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets via Synergistic Doping of Metal Ions and Counteranions for Efficient Water Oxidation

Application of metal-organic frameworks in infectious wound healing

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are metal-organic skeleton compounds composed of self-assembled metal ions or clusters and organic ligands. MOF materials often have porous structures, high specific surface areas, uniform and adjustable pores, high surface activity and easy modification and have a wide range of prospects for application. MOFs have been widely used. In recent years, with the continuous expansion of MOF materials, they have also achieved remarkable results in the field of antimicrobial agents. In this review, the structural composition and synthetic modification of MOF materials are introduced in detail, and the antimicrobial mechanisms and applications of these materials in the healing of infected wounds are described. Moreover, the opportunities and challenges encountered in the development of MOF materials are presented, and we expect that additional MOF materials with high biosafety and efficient antimicrobial capacity will be developed in the future.

Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Modulation Behavior of Photoresponsive Bimetallic MOFs

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of sensing external stimuli will provide more possibilities for further regulating third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. In this work, we synthesized bimetallic MOFs (ZnCu-MOF and ZnCd-MOF) through central metal exchange using a photoresponsive Zn-MOF as a precursor. Compared with Zn-MOF, both ZnCu-MOF and ZnCd-MOF exhibit significantly enhanced third-order NLO absorption properties. This is mainly attributed to the introduction of metal ions with different electron configurations that can adjust the bandgap of MOFs and enhance electron delocalization, thus promoting electron transfer. Interestingly, the bimetallic MOFs show a transition from reverse saturation absorption (RSA) to saturation absorption (SA) after exposure to ultraviolet irradiation, as they retain the properties of directional photogenerated electron transfer. Photoresponsive bimetallic MOFs not only have the effect of bimetallic modulation of electronic structures but also have the characteristics of photoinduced electron transfer, exhibiting diversified optical properties. These findings provide a novel method for the development of multifunctional NLO materials.

Unlocking Catalytic Potential: Encasing CoP Nanoparticles within Mesoporous CoFeP Nanocubes for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts fabricated by using nanosized nonprecious-metal-based materials have attracted considerable attention for use in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Understanding performance disparities and structure-property relationships of various nonprecious-metal-based nanostructures is crucial for optimizing their applications. Herein, CoP nanoparticles encompassed within a CoFeP shell (named CoP/CoFeP) are fabricated. The mesoporous CoFeP shell enables effective mass transport, affords abundant active sites, and ensures the accessibility of hybrid interfaces between CoP and CoFeP. Therefore, encased CoP/CoFeP nanocubes exhibit excellent OER catalytic activity with an overpotential of 266 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media, superior to reference hollow CoFeP nanocubes and commercial RuO2. Experimental characterization and theoretical calculations show that the encased structure of CoP/CoFeP with a rich Fe-doped shell enables electronic interactions between CoP and CoFeP, as well as accelerates structural reconstruction that exposes more active sites, yielding an enhanced OER performance. This study aims to inspire further work on nonprecious-metal catalysts with tailored nanostructures and electronic properties for the OER.

Unraveling the π-interaction of NiFe-based metal-organic frameworks with enhanced oxygen evolution: Optimizing electronic structure and facilitating electron transfer modulation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with conjugation carboxylate ligands as electrocatalysts can significantly improve oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the role of π-interaction on the reactive sites of OER is often neglected. We intend to unravel the mechanism of how π-interaction enhances OER performance. The results of Rietveld refinement, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and in-situ Raman spectra show that π-interaction can efficiently modulate the local spin configuration of metal centers, facilitate γ-Ni_1-xFe_xOOH active species with high-valence Ni sites modified by high-spin Fe, accelerate electron transfer, optimize the d-band center together with the beneficial rate-determining step of OER. NiFe-BPDC MOFs/NF with 0.8559 eV π-interaction energy generated γ-Ni_1-xFe_xOOH in only 60 s at 1.4 V, demonstrating that π-interaction promotes the rapid generation of highly active reactive sites. Furthermore, the results of in-situ Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra reveal that the deprotonation and deoxygenation steps of OER are accompanied by changes in the oxidation state of metal ions and the generation of oxygen vacancies on the surface of catalysts. In addition, NiFe-BPDC MOFs/NF rapidly completes the deprotonation and deoxygenation steps, and it requires only 288 mV overpotential to reach 100 mA/cm² with 100 h of stability, suggesting promising industrial application.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Nanomaterials for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an energy-determined half-reaction for water splitting and many other energy conversion processes, such as rechargeable metal-air batteries and CO₂ reduction, due to its four-electron sluggish process. To reduce the energy consumption and cost of these advanced technologies, various transition metal-based nanomaterials, like metal oxides/hydroxides, nitride, and phosphide are synthesized. Among these, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials are considered as the ideal candidate for the fabrication of efficient OER electrocatalysts owing to their unique physicochemical properties. In this review, the fundamental catalytic mechanisms and key evaluation parameters of OER in acidic and alkaline media are presented first. Then, design strategies for MOF-based OER catalysts and research progress in the study of the structure-performance relationship are summarized. Subsequently, the recent research advances of MOF-based OER electrocatalysts in alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes are overviewed. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities are provided under the frame of materials design, theoretical understanding, advanced characterization techniques, and industrial applications.
