Advantageous Effects of Phase Transition-Modulated Electric Polarization of Hollow CuSx for Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Scrutinizing the electromagnetic wave absorption mechanism of sulfides remains a challenge due to the variability of the modulation of the crystal structure of the sulfides. To take advantage of this variability, nanosheet-assembled Cu9S5/CN composites with sulfur vacancies were prepared in this study by self-assembly synthesis and subsequent high-temperature heat treatment. Systematic studies show the phase transition-dependent induced decrease in the conductivity, the defect site-induced difference in the charge density, the weakened vacancy formation of defect polarization loss, and the influence of valence state on electric dipole polarization loss and interfacial polarization loss, making the optimization of the dielectric constant a significant positive effect on the improvement of impedance matching. This work provides a reliable example and theoretical guidance for the crystal structure design for the preparation of a new generation of efficient sulfide-based wave-absorbing materials.

Enhanced photoreduction efficiency of Cr(VI) driven by visible light in a new Zr-based metal-organic framework modified by hydroxyl groups

While metal-organic framework (MOF) photocatalysts have demonstrated a unique Cr(VI) photoreduction capability in recent decades, their performance is still insufficient for practical applications because of their low Cr(VI) uptake and poor visible light response. To cope with these drawbacks, a new OH-modified Zr-based MOF, termed HCMUE-1, was successfully prepared via a solvothermal method in this work. The complete characterization of HCMUE-1 was performed through various techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained data exhibited the excellent Cr(VI) photoreduction efficiency of HCMUE-1, reaching up to 98% after 90 min and almost 100% after 120 min under visible light illumination in a low acidic medium. Noteworthily, HCMUE-1 retained the same Cr(VI) removal rate for at least seven cycles without considerable loss. Further experimental investigations demonstrated that the structural stability and surface morphology of HCMUE-1 were retained after photoreduction. Moreover, the photocatalytic reduction mechanism of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was interpreted through a series of systematic experimental measurements. These results indicate that HCMUE-1 possesses potential as an efficient photocatalyst for reducing toxic Cr(VI) species from wastewater in real-life conditions.

Controlled Synthesis and Uniform Anchoring of Hollow CuxO Nanocubes on Carbon Nanofiber for Enhanced Se(S)-Se(S) Bond Activation

In the present study, we fabricated hollow cubic Cu_xO nanoparticles (∼23 nm) incorporated with CNF (HC-Cu_xO/CNF) through controlled thermal oxidation of solid cubic Cu₂O nanoparticles (∼21 nm) supported on carbon nanofibers (SC-Cu₂O/CNF) under airflow, exploiting the nanoscale Kirkendall effect. These hollow Cu_xO nanocubes with increased surface areas exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for unsymmetrical chalcogenide synthesis under ligand-free conditions.

Mechanochemical synthesis of non-stoichiometric copper sulfide Cu1.8S applicable as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent and synthesis scalability verification

An effort to prepare different non-stoichiometric Cu_xS_y compounds starting from elemental precursors using mechanochemistry was made in this study. However, out of the 7 stoichiometries tested, it was only possible to obtain three phases: covellite CuS, chalcocite Cu₂S and digenite Cu_1.8S and their mixtures. To obtain the digenite phase with the highest purity, the Cu : S stoichiometric ratio needed to be fixed at 1.6 : 1. The reaction between copper and sulfur was completed within a second range, however, milling was performed for up to 15 minutes until the equilibrium in phase composition between digenite and covellite was reached. The possibility of preparing the product in a 300 g batch by eccentric vibratory milling in 30 minutes was successfully verified at the end. The estimated crystallite sizes for the digenite Cu_1.8S obtained via lab-scale and scalable experiments were around 12 and 17 nm, respectively. The obtained products were found to be efficient photocatalysts under visible light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, being capable of the complete degradation of the Methyl Orange dye in a concentration of 10 mg L^-1 in 2 hours. Finally, the antibacterial potential of both lab-scale and large-scale industrial products was proven and, regardless of the manufacturing scale, the nanoparticles retained their properties against bacterial cells.
