Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Applications of Layer-Structured Metal Chalcogenides Composites

Featured with the attractive properties such as large surface area, unique atomic layer thickness, excellent electronic conductivity, and superior catalytic activity, layered metal chalcogenides (LMCs) have received considerable research attention in electrocatalytic applications. In this review, the approaches developed to synthesize LMCs-based electrocatalysts are summarized. Recent progress in LMCs-based composites for electrochemical energy conversion applications including oxygen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, and nitrogen reduction reaction is reviewed, and the potential opportunities and practical obstacles for the development of LMCs-based composites as high-performing active substances for electrocatalytic applications are also discussed. This review may provide an inspiring guidance for developing high-performance LMCs for electrochemical energy conversion applications.

Controllable Electronic Transfer Tailoring d-band Center via Cobalt-Oxygen-Bridged Ru/Fe Dual-sites for Boosted Oxygen Evolution

Rational tailoring of the electronic structure at the defined active center of reconstructed metal (oxy)hydroxides (MOOH) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a challenge. With the guidance of density functional theory (DFT), herein a dual-site regulatory strategy is reported to tailor the d-band center of the Co site in CoOOH via the controlled electronic transfer at the Ru─O─Co─O─Fe bonding structure. Through the bridged O2- site, electrons are vastly flowed from the t2g-orbital of the Ru site to the low-spin orbital of the Co site in the Ru-O-Co coordination and further transfer from the strong electron-electron repulsion of the Co site to the Fe site by the Co-O-Fe coordination, which balancing the electronic configuration of Co sites to weaken the over-strong adsorption energy barrier of OH* and O*, respectively. Benefiting from the highly active of the Co site, the constructed (Ru2Fe2Co6)OOH provide an extremely low overpotential of 248 mV and a Tafel slope of 32.5 mV dec-1 at 10 mA cm-2 accompanied by long durability in alkaline OER, far superior over the pristine and Co-O-Fe bridged CoOOH catalysts. This work provides guidance for the rational design and in-depth analysis of the optimized role of metal dual-sites.

Noble Metal Phosphides Supported on CoNi Metaphosphate for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Transition metal metaphosphates and noble metal phosphides prepared under similar conditions are potential hybrid catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting, which is of great significance for H2 production. Herein, the structure and electrocatalytic activity of different noble metal species (i.e., Rh, Pd, Ir) on CoNiP4O12 nanoarrays have been systematically studied. Due to the different formation energies of noble metal phosphides, the phosphides of Rh (RhPx) and Pd (PdPx) as well as the noble metal Ir are obtained under the same phosphorylation conditions perspectively. RhPx/CoNiP4O12 and PdPx/CoNiP4O12 exhibit much better HER activity than Ir/CoNiP4O12 due to the advantages of phosphides. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the extraordinary activity of RhPx/CoNiP4O12 originated from the strong affinity to H2O and optimal adsorption for H*. The best RhPx/CoNiP4O12 only requires a low overpotential of 30 and 234 mV to deliver 10 mA cm-2 for HER and OER, respectively, and therefore is effective for overall water splitting (requiring 1.57 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2). This work not only develops a novel RhPx/CoNiP4O12 electrocatalyst for overall water splitting but also provides deep insight into the formation mechanism of noble metal phosphides.

Heterostructure CoS2/MoS2 Nanosheets as a Dual-Active Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Cost-effective and earth-abundant oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts are an incredible research hotspot in numerous energy storage and conversion technology fields. Herein, CoS2/MoS2 nanosheets supported by carbon cloth as a dual-active CC@CoS2/MoS2 heterostructure electrocatalyst is prepared through a simple solvothermal method. The catalyst demonstrates admirable OER performance in 1 M KOH solution with a low overpotential of 243 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a minor Tafel slope of 109 mV dec-1, displaying honorable stability after 1000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles and long-term robustness over 60 h. Theoretical calculations further ascertain that the rate-determining step of the electrocatalytic course of the CC@CoS2/MoS2 heterostructure is the conversion *O + OH- → *OOH + e- with a lower energy barrier of 1.49 eV due to the heterojunction established by CoS2 and MoS2, which can promote the OER performance of electrocatalysts. The actual identification of the catalytic mechanism in the heterostructure is conducive to the improvement of electrocatalysis applications in the OER.

Immersion-Driven Structural Evolution of NiFeS Nanosheets for Efficient Water Splitting

The development of low-cost, highly active, and stable electrocatalytic water-splitting catalysts is crucial to solving the current energy crisis and environmental pollution. Herein, a simple two-step conversion strategy is proposed to successfully prepare NiFeS nanosheet structure catalyst through the "immersion-sulfurization" strategy. The self-supported electrode can be prepared in large quantities due to its simple preparation process. As an active substance, NiFeS can grow directly on the NiFe foam substrate, avoiding the use of adhesives or conductive agents, and directly used as electrodes. The as-obtained NiFeS/NFF-300 displays efficient catalytic activity in electrocatalytic water splitting. The overpotential required for OER of the NiFeS/NFF-300 electrode at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 is 230 mV. The electrode underwent a stability test at 10 mA cm-2 for 24 h, and the overpotential remained essentially unchanged, demonstrating excellent stability. Moreover, NiFeS/NFF-300 exhibits considerable HER performances compared with NiFeC2O4/NFF and NiFe foam. The unique nanosheet structure and the presence of Niδ+ and Ni2+ formed by NiFe foam substrate on the NiFeS surface are responsible for its excellent electrocatalytic activity.

Longevous Cycling of Rechargeable Zn-Air Battery Enabled by "Raisin-Bread" Cobalt Oxynitride/Porous Carbon Hybrid Electrocatalysts

Developing commercially viable electrocatalyst lies at the research hotspot of rechargeable Zn-air batteries, but it is still challenging to meet the requirements of energy efficiency and durability in realistic applications. Strategic material design is critical to addressing its drawbacks in terms of sluggish kinetics of oxygen reactions and limited battery lifespan. Herein, a "raisin-bread" architecture is designed for a hybrid catalyst constituting cobalt nitride as the core nanoparticle with thin oxidized coverings, which is further deposited within porous carbon aerogel. Based on synchrotron-based characterizations, this hybrid provides oxygen vacancies and Co-Nx -C sites as the active sites, resulting from a strong coupling between CoOx Ny nanoparticles and 3D conductive carbon scaffolds. Compared to the oxide reference, it performs enhanced stability in harsh electrocatalytic environments, highlighting the benefits of the oxynitride. Furthermore, the 3D conductive scaffolds improve charge/mass transportation and boost durability of these active sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduced N species into hybrid can synergistically tune the d-band center of cobalt and improve its bifunctional activity. As a result, the obtained air cathode exhibits bifunctional overpotential of 0.65 V and a battery lifetime exceeding 1350 h, which sets a new record for rechargeable Zn-air battery reported so far.

A Review of Transition Metal Boride, Carbide, Pnictide, and Chalcogenide Water Oxidation Electrocatalysts

Transition metal borides, carbides, pnictides, and chalcogenides (X-ides) have emerged as a class of materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Because of their high earth abundance, electrical conductivity, and OER performance, these electrocatalysts have the potential to enable the practical application of green energy conversion and storage. Under OER potentials, X-ide electrocatalysts demonstrate various degrees of oxidation resistance due to their differences in chemical composition, crystal structure, and morphology. Depending on their resistance to oxidation, these catalysts will fall into one of three post-OER electrocatalyst categories: fully oxidized oxide/(oxy)hydroxide material, partially oxidized core@shell structure, and unoxidized material. In the past ten years (from 2013 to 2022), over 890 peer-reviewed research papers have focused on X-ide OER electrocatalysts. Previous review papers have provided limited conclusions and have omitted the significance of "catalytically active sites/species/phases" in X-ide OER electrocatalysts. In this review, a comprehensive summary of (i) experimental parameters (e.g., substrates, electrocatalyst loading amounts, geometric overpotentials, Tafel slopes, etc.) and (ii) electrochemical stability tests and post-analyses in X-ide OER electrocatalyst publications from 2013 to 2022 is provided. Both mono and polyanion X-ides are discussed and classified with respect to their material transformation during the OER. Special analytical techniques employed to study X-ide reconstruction are also evaluated. Additionally, future challenges and questions yet to be answered are provided in each section. This review aims to provide researchers with a toolkit to approach X-ide OER electrocatalyst research and to showcase necessary avenues for future investigation.

Immobilization of Oxyanions on the Reconstructed Heterostructure Evolved from a Bimetallic Oxysulfide for the Promotion of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires the electrocatalyst to bear abundant active sites, optimized electronic structure as well as robust component and mechanical stability. Herein, a bimetallic lanthanum-nickel oxysulfide with rich oxygen vacancies based on the La2O2S prototype is fabricated as a binder-free precatalyst for alkaline OER. The combination of advanced in situ and ex situ characterizations with theoretical calculation uncovers the synergistic effect among La, Ni, O, and S species during OER, which assures the adsorption and stabilization of the oxyanion [Formula: see text] onto the surface of the deeply reconstructed porous heterostructure composed of confining NiOOH nanodomains by La(OH)3 barrier. Such coupling, confinement, porosity and immobilization enable notable improvement in active site accessibility, phase stability, mass diffusion capability and the intrinsic Gibbs free energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. The optimized electrocatalyst delivers exceptional alkaline OER activity and durability, outperforming most of the Ni-based benchmark OER electrocatalysts.

Regulating the Spin State of Metal and Metal Carbide Heterojunctions for Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for improving the overall efficiency of water splitting. Herein, the CoFe/(Co_xFe_1-x)₃Mo₃C heterojunction is purposely designed as an OER catalyst, which displays a low overpotential of 293 mV for affording a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope of 48 mV/dec. Various characterization results demonstrate that the significant work-function difference between CoFe and (Co_xFe_1-x)₃Mo₃C can induce interfacial charge redistribution, which results in the formation of Co and Fe sites with a high-spin state, thus stimulating the surface phase reconstruction of CoFe/(Co_xFe_1-x)₃Mo₃C to corresponding active oxyhydroxide. Meanwhile, the electrochemical leaching of Mo ions from the initial structure can contribute to the formation of defective sites, further benefiting OH^- adsorption and surface oxidation. Moreover, the remaining CoFe can accelerate electron migration during the electrocatalytic process. This study presents new insights into constructing efficient OER electrocatalysts with an optimized spin-state configuration via interfacial engineering.

Lattice Strain Mediated Reversible Reconstruction in CoMoO4·0.69H2O for Intermittent Oxygen Evolution

A heterogeneous interface usually plays a versatile role in modulating catalysis and the durability of hybrid electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and its intrinsic mechanism is still in dispute due to an uncertain correlation of initial, intermediate and active phases. In this article, the CoMoO₄·0.69H₂O/Co₃O₄ heterogeneous interface is configured to understand the evolution kinetics of these correlated phases. Due to the chemically and electrochemically "inert" character of Co₃O₄ support, lattice strain with 3.31% tuning magnitude in primary CoMoO₄·0.69H₂O can be inherited after spontaneous dissolution of molybdenum cations in electrolyte, dominating catalytic activity of the reconstructed CoOOH. In situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrates reversible conversion between active CoOOH and amorphous cobalt oxide during OER when positive and negative potentials are sequentially supplied onto hybrid catalysts with favorable strain. Therefore, superior durability with negligible decay after 10 cycles is experimentally identified for intermittent oxygen evolution. Theoretical calculations indicate that appropriate stress within the electrocatalyst could reduce the reaction energy barrier and enhance the OER performance by optimizing the adsorption of intermediates.

Crystalline-Amorphous Interface Coupling of Ni3S2/NiPx/NF with Enhanced Activity and Stability for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

The rational design of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an urgent need but remains challenging for various sustainable energy systems. How to adjust the atomic structure and electronic structure of the active center is a key bottleneck problem. Accelerating the electron transfer process and the deep self-reconstruction of active sites could be a cost-effective strategy toward electrocatalytic OER catalyst development. Here, a crystalline-amorphous (c-a) coupled Ni₃S₂/NiP_x electrocatalyst self-supported on nickel foam with an intimate interface was developed via a feasible solvothermal-electrochemistry method. The coupling interface of the crystalline structure with high conductivity and amorphous structure with numerous potential active sites could regulate the electronic structure and optimize the adsorption/desorption of O-containing species, ultimately resulting in high OER catalytic performance. The obtained Ni₃S₂/NiP_x/NF presents a low OER overpotential of 265 mV to obtain 10 mA·cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope of 51.6 mV·dec^-1. Also, the catalyst with the coupled interface exhibited significantly enhanced long-term stability compared to the other two catalysts, with <5% decay in OER activity over 20 h of continuous operation, while that of Ni₃S₂/NF and NiP_x/NF decreased by about 30 and 50%, respectively. This study provides inspiration for other energy conversion reactions in optimizing the performance of catalysts by coupling crystalline-amorphous structures.

Oxygen Evolution/Reduction Reaction Catalysts: From In Situ Monitoring and Reaction Mechanisms to Rational Design

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are core steps of various energy conversion and storage systems. However, their sluggish reaction kinetics, i.e., the demanding multielectron transfer processes, still render OER/ORR catalysts less efficient for practical applications. Moreover, the complexity of the catalyst-electrolyte interface makes a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic OER/ORR mechanisms challenging. Fortunately, recent advances of in situ/operando characterization techniques have facilitated the kinetic monitoring of catalysts under reaction conditions. Here we provide selected highlights of recent in situ/operando mechanistic studies of OER/ORR catalysts with the main emphasis placed on heterogeneous systems (primarily discussing first-row transition metals which operate under basic conditions), followed by a brief outlook on molecular catalysts. Key sections in this review are focused on determination of the true active species, identification of the active sites, and monitoring of the reactive intermediates. For in-depth insights into the above factors, a short overview of the metrics for accurate characterizations of OER/ORR catalysts is provided. A combination of the obtained time-resolved reaction information and reliable activity data will then guide the rational design of new catalysts. Strategies such as optimizing the restructuring process as well as overcoming the adsorption-energy scaling relations will be discussed. Finally, pending current challenges and prospects toward the understanding and development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts and selected homogeneous catalysts are presented.

In Situ Construction of MnO2-Co3O4 Nanosheet Heterojunctions on Co@NCNT Surfaces for Oxygen Evolution

Electrocatalytic water splitting is still circuitous and controversial because of the lack of highly active electrocatalysts to decrease the overpotential. Herein, we report a feasible method for constructing heterojunctions of MnO₂-Co₃O₄ nanosheets on Co@NCNT support surfaces (MnO₂-Co₃O₄/Co@NCNT) by spontaneous redox reactions. Experimental results indicate that Co embedded in Co@NCNT can be used as the carbon support and anchoring sites for heterojunctions, thus exposing a large number of active sites, adjusting the surface electronic structure, changing the OER rate-determining step of the catalyst, and reducing the reaction energy barrier. Besides, the in situ formation of MnO₂-Co₃O₄ nanosheets on Co@NCNT inhibits the loss and aggregation of the catalyst, leading to robust structural stability. Therefore, the synergistic effects of these factors provide multi-functional active sites to enhance the intrinsic activity and achieve maximum catalytic performances. To deliver a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, the catalyst of MnO₂-Co₃O₄/Co@NCNT achieves an overpotential (η) of 303 mV in 1.0 M KOH media for OER. This simple redox strategy can be easily extended to prepare other ultrathin transition-metal oxide heterojunctions, which could be applied not only for water splitting but also for other energy conversion and storage technologies.

Self-Supporting Metal-Organic Framework-Based Nanoarrays for Electrocatalysis

The replacement of powdery catalysts with self-supporting alternatives for catalyzing various electrochemical reactions is extremely important for the large-scale commercial application of renewable energy storage and conversion technologies. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanoarrays possess tunable compositions, well-defined structure, abundant active sites, effective mass and electron transport, etc., which enable them to exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance in multiple electrochemical reactions. This review presents the latest research progress in developing MOF-based nanoarrays for electrocatalysis. We first highlight the structural features and electrocatalytic advantages of MOF-based nanoarrays, followed by a detailed summary of the design and synthesis strategies of MOF-based nanoarrays, and then describe the recent progress of their application in various electrocatalytic reactions. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are discussed, where further exploration into MOF-based nanoarrays will facilitate the development of electrochemical energy conversion technologies.

Structural and Electronic Modulation of Iron-Based Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Efficient Overall Water Splitting in Alkaline and Seawater Environment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered potential electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting. However, the structure-activity relationship of most MOFs is not systematically analyzed for electrocatalysis for anodes and cathodes. In this paper, we provide a strategy to modulate the electronic microstructure of iron-based bimetallic MOFs (MFe-BDC (M: Mg, Zn, Cd)) grown on the nickel foam (NF) as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The optimal bimetallic CdFe-BDC via modulating appropriate metal cations of IIA and IIB possesses excellent OER and HER performance with the lowest overpotentials of 290 mV at 100 mA cm^-2 and 148 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, respectively. The overall water splitting performance of the as-prepared CdFe-BDC requires 1.68 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in the real seawater media, and it exhibits the competitive H₂ and O₂ production rates of 6.4 and 3.1 μL s^-1, respectively, in ambient alkaline conditions, suggesting its potential practical applications. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the relationship between microstructure and electrocatalytic performance of bimetallic MFe-BDC. This work emphasizes the significance of tailoring the electronic microstructure of bimetallic MOFs for efficient overall water splitting in alkaline and seawater environment.

Effect of Surface‐Adsorbed and Intercalated (Oxy)anions on the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

As the kinetically demanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the decarbonization of our society, a wide range of (pre)catalysts with various non‐active‐site elements (e.g., Mo, S, Se, N, P, C, Si…) have been investigated. Thermodynamics dictate that these elements oxidize during industrial operation. The formed oxyanions are water soluble and thus predominantly leach in a reconstruction process. Nevertheless, recently, it was unveiled that these thermodynamically stable (oxy)anions can adsorb on the surface or intercalate in the interlayer space of the active catalyst. There, they tune the electronic properties of the active sites and can interact with the reaction intermediates, changing the OER kinetics and potentially breaking the persisting OER *OH/*OOH scaling relations. Thus, the addition of (oxy)anions to the electrolyte opens a new design dimension for OER catalysis and the herein discussed observations deepen the understanding of the role of anions in the OER.
