Surface Engineering on Polyimide-Silver Films in Low-Cost, Flexible Humidity Sensors

Environmentally stable, adhesive, self-healing, stretchable and transparent gelatin based eutectogels for self-powered humidity sensors

Intrinsic environmental and stability limitations of hydrogels have inhibited their practical applications as a flexible wearable device due to water evaporation or freezing in complex environments such as low temperatures and arid environments. In this work, a multifunctional gelatin based ionic conductive eutectogel with double network structure is designed via ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) (acrylic acid (AA), choline chloride (ChCl) and ethylene glycol (EG)). In this system, the introduction of ethylene glycol (EG) can be used to dissolve gelatin. The resulting DESG eutectogel exhibited excellent adhesion, mechanical robustness, anti-freeze, anti-drying, and self-healing. Interestingly, the DESG gels showed high humidity sensitivity in a wide humidity detection range (11 %-83 %), which can be assembled as a self-powdered humidity sensor to monitor human mouth and nose breathing. This work is expected to bring new prospect to construct high performance humidity sensors using gelatin based humidity-responsive materials for a wide range of potential applications in respiratory diagnostics, sleep monitoring, electronic skin and wearable electronics.

Ultra-conformal epidermal antenna for multifunctional motion artifact-free sensing and point-of-care monitoring

Accurate acquisition of physiological and physical information from human tissue is essential for health monitoring, disease prevention and treatment. The existing antennas with traditional rigid or flexible substrates are susceptible to motion artifacts in wearable applications due to the miniaturization limitation and lack of proper adhesion and conformal interfaces with the skin. Recent advances in wearable radio frequency (RF) bioelectronics directly drawn on the skin are a promising solution for future skin-interfaced devices. Herein, we present a first-of-its kind epidermal antenna architecture with skin as the antenna substrate, which is ultra-low profile, ultra-conformal, ultra-compact, and simple fabrication without specialized equipment. The radiation unit and ground of antenna are drawn directly on the skin with the strong adhesion and ultra conformality. Therefore, this RF device is highly adaptable to motion. As a proof-of- feasibility, epidermal antenna can be freely drawn on demand at different locations on the skin for the development of temperature sensor, skin hydration sensor, strain sensor, glucose sensor and other devices. An epidermal antenna-based temperature sensor can offer accurate and real-time monitoring of human body temperature changes in the ultra-wideband (UWB) range. The results during the monitoring of hydration level with and without stretching show that the epidermal antenna drawn on the skin is motion artifact-free. We also designed an epidermal antenna array employing a horseshoe-shaped configuration for the precise identification of various gestures. In addition, the non-invasive blood glucose level (BGL) monitoring results during the in-vivo experiments report high correlation between the epidermal antenna responses and BGLs, without any time hysteresis. After the prediction of BGL by BP network, all the predicted BGL values are fallen 100% into the clinically acceptable zones. Together, these results show that epidermal antenna offers a promising new approach for biosensing platform.

Biodegradable ion-conductive polyvinyl alcohol/okra polysaccharide composite films for fast-response respiratory monitoring sensors

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and okra polysaccharide (OP) are biodegradable polymers with high hydrophilicity and good biocompatibility with potential for use as flexible humidity-sensitive materials. Herein, biodegradable flexible composite films (named POP films) were prepared from PVA, OP, and phytic acid using a solution-casting method based on. POP films exhibited excellent mechanical strength, flexibility, flame retardancy, water resistance, humidity response, and humidity-sensing characteristics. Notably, the POP humidity sensors exhibited a hysteresis value of 1.88 % relative humidity for the adsorption and desorption processes and good sensitivity over a wide humidity range of 35-95 %. In addition, the humidity sensor distinguished the frequency of nose breathing, and its response and recovery times were 0.9 and 1.98 s, respectively. The excellent performance of POP sensors in monitoring humidity and human respiratory rates demonstrates the sensor's potential for wearable smart devices.

Recent advances in wearable iontronic sensors for healthcare applications

Iontronic sensors have garnered significant attention as wearable sensors due to their exceptional mechanical performance and the ability to maintain electrical performance under various mechanical stimuli. Iontronic sensors can respond to stimuli like mechanical stimuli, humidity, and temperature, which has led to exploration of their potential as versatile sensors. Here, a comprehensive review of the recent researches and developments on several types of iontronic sensors (e.g., pressure, strain, humidity, temperature, and multi-modal sensors), in terms of their sensing principles, constituent materials, and their healthcare-related applications is provided. The strategies for improving the sensing performance and environmental stability of iontronic sensors through various innovative ionic materials and structural designs are reviewed. This review also provides the healthcare applications of iontronic sensors that have gained increased feasibility and broader applicability due to the improved sensing performance. Lastly, outlook section discusses the current challenges and the future direction in terms of the applicability of the iontronic sensors to the healthcare.

Printable and Flexible Humidity Sensor Based on Graphene -Oxide-Supported MoTe2 Nanosheets for Multifunctional Applications

This study focuses on a novel humidity sensor composed of graphene-oxide (GO)-supported MoTe₂ nanosheets. Conductive Ag electrodes were formed on PET substrates by inkjet printing. A thin film of GO-MoTe₂ was deposited on the Ag electrode used for adsorbing humidity. The experiment's results demonstrate that MoTe₂ are attached to GO nanosheets uniformly and tightly. The capacitive output of the sensors with various ratios of GO/MoTe₂ has been tested for different levels of humidity (11.3-97.3%RH) at room temperature (25 °C). As a consequence, the obtained hybrid film exhibits superior sensitivity (94.12 pF/%RH). The structural integrity and interaction of different components were discussed to afford the prominent humidity sensitivity performance. Under the bending condition, the output curve of the sensor has no obvious fluctuation. This work provides a low-cost way to build flexible humidity sensors with high-performance in environmental monitoring and healthcare.

Research Progress and Application of Polyimide-Based Nanocomposites

Polyimide (PI) is one of the most dominant engineering plastics with excellent thermal, mechanical, chemical stability and dielectric performance. Further improving the versatility of PIs is of great significance, broadening their application prospects. Thus, integrating functional nanofillers can finely tune the individual characteristic to a certain extent as required by the function. Integrating the two complementary benefits, PI-based composites strongly expand applications, such as aerospace, microelectronic devices, separation membranes, catalysis, and sensors. Here, from the perspective of system science, the recent studies of PI-based composites for molecular design, manufacturing process, combination methods, and the relevant applications are reviewed, more relevantly on the mechanism underlying the phenomena. Additionally, a systematic summary of the current challenges and further directions for PI nanocomposites is presented. Hence, the review will pave the way for future studies.

Dynamic Sustainable Polyimide Film Combining Hardness with Softness via a "Mimosa-Like" Bionic Strategy

Dielectric polyimides (PIs) are ubiquitous as insulation in electrical power systems and electronic devices. Generally, dynamic polyimide is required to solve irreversible failure processes of electrical or mechanical damage, for example, under high temperature, pressure, and field strength. The challenge lies in the design of the molecular structure of rigid polyimide to achieve dynamic reversibility. Herein, a low-molecular-weight polyimide gene unit is designed to crosslink with polyimide ligase to prepare the smart film. Interestingly, due to the variability of gene unit and ligase combinations, the polyimide films combining hardness with softness are designed into three forms via a "Mimosa-like" bionic strategy to adapt to different application scenarios. Meanwhile, the films have good degradation efficiency, excellent recyclability, and can be self-healable, which makes them reuse. Clearly, the films can be used in the preparation of ultrafast sensors with a response time ≈0.15 s and the application of corona-resistant films with 100% recovery. Furthermore, the construction of polyimide and carbon-fiber-reinforced composites (CFRCs) has been verified to apply to the worse environment. Nicely, the composites have the property of multiple cycles and the non-destructive recycle rate of carbon fiber (CF) is as high as 100%. The design idea of preparing high-strength dynamic polyimide by crosslinking simple polyimide gene unit with ligase could provide a good foundation and a clear case for the sustainable development of electrical and electronic polyimides, from the perspective of Mimosa bionics.

Lamellar Nanocomposite Based on a 1D Crayfish-like CeIII-Substituted Phospho(III)tungstate Semiconductor and Polyaniline Used as a High-Performance Humidity Sensing Device

In order to meet people's demand for intelligent management of daily life and health, manufacturing and developing humidity monitoring equipment with convenience, high sensitivity, easy miniaturization, and low cost is particularly important in the era of rapid development of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Polyaniline (PANI) is an attractive humidity sensing material due to its designable functional properties. However, PANI modified polyoxometalates (POMs) for humidity sensing are still rare. As a proof of concept, a novel moisture sensing composite material was obtained based on PANI and a novel 1D rare-earth-substituted phospho(III)tungstate [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₉Na₃H₆[Ce₂(H₂O)₃W₅O₁₃(C₂O₄)][HP^IIIW₉O₃₃]₂[(HP^III)₂W₁₅O₅₄]·42H₂O (1). Notably, the anion structure of 1 contains trivacant Keggin-type [B-α-HP^IIIW₉O₃₃]^8- and Dawson-like [(HP^III)₂W₁₅O₅₄]^10- subunits linked by a heterometallic [Ce₂(H₂O)₃W₅O₃₂(C₂O₄)]^30- cluster. Furthermore, the 1/PANI composite shows a typical semiconductive characteristic with a "band-like" conductive mechanism. The fabricated 1/PANI-based humidity sensing device exhibits a broad sensing range (11∼97% relative humidity), fast response/recovery time (3.45 s/3.24 s), good repeatability, and long-term stability (over 3 months). Additionally, the possible sensing mechanism is proposed. This work offers an enormous possibility for the design of high-performance humidity sensing materials through POM material chemistry.
