A Bifunctional Chemomechanics Strategy To Suppress Electrochemo-Mechanical Failure of Ni-Rich Cathodes for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Facile Magnetite Coating for Stable High-Voltage Cycling of Nickel-Rich Cathodes in Conventional Liquid and All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

The instability of Nickel (Ni)-rich cathodes at high voltage is a critical bottleneck toward developing superior lithium-ion batteries. This instability is driven by cathode-electrolyte side reactions, causing rapid degradation, and compromising the overall cycle life. In this study, a protective coating using dispersed "magnetite (FeO.Fe2O3)" nanoparticles is used to uniformly decorate the surface of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NMC 811) microparticles. The modified cathode delivers significant improvement in electrochemical performance at high voltage (≈4.6 V) by suppressing deleterious electrode-electrolyte interactions. A notably higher cycle stability, rate performance, and overall energy density is realized for the coated cathode in a conventional liquid electrolyte battery. When deployed in pellet-stacked solid-state cells with Li6PS5Cl as the electrolyte, the magnetite-coated NMC 811 showed strikingly superior cycling stability than its uncoated counterpart, proving the versatility of the chemistry. The facile surfactant-assisted coating process developed in this work, in conjunction with the affordability, abundance, and nontoxic nature of magnetite makes this a promising approach to realize commercially viable high voltage Ni-rich cathodes that exhibit stable performance in liquid as well as solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Enhanced Electrochemical Stability and Extended Cycle Life in Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Batteries: The Role of Li10 SnP2 S12 Coating on Ni-Rich NCM Cathode

Recently, sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) have attracted great attention because of their excellent safety and high energy density. However, by-products formed from side-reactions between the oxide-based cathodes and sulfide-based solid electrolytes (SEs) increase the interfacial resistance and degrade the cell performance. Suppression of this interfacial resistance is thus critical. In this study, the extraordinarily high stability of the cathode/SE interface is discovered when a Li10 SnP2 S12 (LSnPS) is applied to a cathode buffer layer. The electrochemical properties of the cathode interface at high potential are improved by synthesizing a core-shell structure cathode using LSnPS. The synthesized LSnPS is uniformly coated on a Li2 ZrO3 -coated LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 (LZO-NCM) surface using the cost-efficient mechano-fusion method. The ASSB with LSnPS-coated LZO-NCM as the cathode and Li6 PS5 Cl (argyrodite, LPSCl) as the SE exhibited a capacity of 192 mAh g-1 and excellent cycle retention of ≈75% after 500 charge/discharge cycles. In addition, the degradation mechanism at the cathode/SE interface is investigated. The results indicated that LSnPS stabilizes the interface between NCM and argyrodite, thereby inhibiting the decomposition of the SE. This technology is expected to contribute to the commercialization of cathode materials for sulfide-based ASSBs due to its enhanced cycle performance, low-cost material application, and eco-friendly process.

Interelectrode Talk in Solid-State Lithium-Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium-metal batteries have been identified as a strategic research direction for the electric vehicle industry because of their promising high energy density and potential characteristic safety. However, the intrinsic mechanical properties of solid materials cause inevitable electro-chemo-mechanical failure of electrodes and electrolytes during charging and discharging; these failure mechanisms include lithium penetration and formation of cracks and voids, which pose a serious challenge for the long cycle life of solid-state lithium-metal batteries. Here, a short overview of the recent advances with a view to understand this challenge is provided. Furthermore, new insights into the cross-talk behavior between the cathode and lithium-metal anode are provided based on the non-uniform Li+ flux inducing interactional electro-chemo-mechanical failure. Furthermore, guidelines for designing stable solid-state lithium-metal batteries and research directions to figure out the interelectrode-talk-related electro-chemo-mechanical failure mechanism are presented, which can be significant for accelerating the development of solid-state lithium batteries.

Slurry-Coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2-Li3InCl6 Composite Cathode with Enhanced Interfacial Stability for Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Batteries

The implementation of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) is regarded as an important step toward the next-generation energy storage systems. The sulfide solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is a promising candidate for ASSLBs due to its high ionic conductivity and easy processability. However, the interface stability of sulfide SSEs toward high-capacity cathodes like nickel-rich layered cathodes is limited by the interfacial side reaction and narrow electrochemical window of the electrolyte. Herein, we propose introducing the halide SSE Li₃InCl₆ (LIC) with high (electro)chemical stability and superior Li⁺ conductivity to act as an ionic conductive additive in the Ni-rich LiNi_0.8Co_0.1Mn_0.1O₂ (NCM) cathode mixture through a slurry coating, aiming to build a stable cathode-electrolyte interface. This work demonstrates that the sulfide SSE Li_5.5PS_4.5Cl_1.5 (LPSCl) is chemically incompatible with the NCM cathode, and the indispensable role of the substitution of LPSCl with LIC in enhancing the interfacial compatibility and oxidation stability of the electrolyte is highlighted. Accordingly, this new configuration shows superior electrochemical performance at room temperature. It shows a high initial discharge capacity (136.3 mA h g^-1 at 0.1C), cycling performance (77.4% capacity retention at the 100th cycle), and rate capability (79.3 mA h g^-1 at 0.5C). This work paves the way for investigating interfacial challenges regarding high-voltage cathodes and provides new insights into possible interface engineering strategies.

Codependent failure mechanisms between cathode and anode in solid state lithium metal batteries: mediated by uneven ion flux

An in-depth understanding of the degradation mechanisms is a prerequisite for developing the next-generation all solid-state lithium metal battery (ASSLMB) technology. Herein, synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (SXCT) together with other probing tools and simulation method were employed to rediscover the decaying mechanisms of LiNi_0.8Co_0.1Mn_0.1O₂ (NCM)|Li₆PS₅Cl (LPSCl)|Li ASSLMB. It reveals that the detachment and isolation of NCM particles cause the current focusing on the remaining active regions of cathode. The extent of Li stripping and the likelihood of Li⁺ plating into LPSCl facing the active NCM particles becomes higher. Besides, the homogeneity of Li stripping/plating is improved by homogenizing the electrochemical reactions at the cathode side by LiZr₂(PO₄)₃ (LZP) coating. These results suggest a codependent failure mechanism between cathode and anode that is mediated by uneven Li ion flux. This work contributes to a holistic understanding of the degradation mechanisms in ASSLMBs and opens new opportunities for their further optimization and development.
