Controlling the Cation Exsolution of Perovskite to Customize Heterostructure Active Site for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Significance of Engineering the MnO6 Octahedral Units to Promote the Oxygen Reduction Reaction of Perovskite Oxides

The electronic structure and geometric configuration of catalysts play a crucial role to design novel perovskite-type catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nowadays, many studies are more concerned with the influence of electronic structure and ignore the geometric effect, which plays a nonnegligible role in enhancing catalytic performances. Herein, this work regulates the MnO6 octahedral tilting degree of LaMnO3 by modulating the concentration of Y3+ , excluding the electronic effect from the valence state of manganese. Plotting the MnO6 octahedral tilting degree as a function of concentration of Y3+ produces a volcano-shaped plot. The octahedral tilting can reduce the Mn-O covalency, generating more highly active Mn3+ and oxygen vacancies during ORR process. The specific activity has a positive correlation with octahedral tilting degree. Meanwhile, the octahedral tilting stabilizes Mn-O interactions during ORR process and promote stability. Based on experimental results and DFT calculations, octahedral tilting alters the rate-determining step (RDS) and decrease the energy barrier. Subsequent extended experiment confirms that octahedral tilting is the key factor to affect the catalytic performances.

Localized Phase Transformation Triggering Lattice Matching of Metal Oxide and Carbonate Hydroxide for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Orderly heterostructured catalysts, which integrate nanomaterials of complementary structures and dimensions into single-entity structures, have hold great promise for sustainability applications. In this work, it is showcased that air as green reagent can trigger in situ localized phase transformation and transform the metal carbonate hydroxide nanowires into ordered heterostructured catalyst. In single-crystal nanowire heterostructure, the in situ generated and nanosized Co3 O4 will be anchored in single-crystal Co6 (CO3 )2 (OH)8 nanowires spontaneously, triggered by the lattice matching between the (220) plane of Co3 O4 and the (001) plane of Co6 (CO3 )2 (OH)8 . The lattice matching allows intimate contact at heterointerface with well-defined orientation and strong interfacial coupling, and thus significantly expedites the transfer of photogenerated electrons from tiny Co3 O4 to catalytically active Co6 (CO3 )2 (OH)8 in single-crystal nanowire, which elevates the catalytic efficiency of metal carbonate catalyst in the CO2 reduction reaction (VCO = 19.46 mmol g-1 h-1 and VH2 = 11.53 mmol g-1 h-1 ). The present findings add to the growing body of knowledge on exploiting Earth-abundant metal-carbonate catalysts, and demonstrate the utility of localized phase transformation in constructing advanced catalysts for energy and environmental sustainability applications.

Oxygen-Deficient Engineering for Perovskite Oxides in the Application of AOPs: Regulation, Detection, and Reduction Mechanism

A perovskite catalyst combined with various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to treat organic wastewater attracted extensive attention. The physical and chemical catalytic properties of perovskite were largely related to oxygen vacancies (OVs). In this paper, the recent advances in the regulation of OVs in perovskite for enhancing the functionality of the catalyst was reviewed, such as substitution, doping, heat treatment, wet-chemical redox reaction, exsolution, and etching. The techniques of detecting the OVs were also reviewed. An insight was provided into the OVs of perovskite and reduction mechanism in AOPs in this review, which is helpful for the reader to better understand the methods of regulating and detecting OVs in various AOPs.

Toward Superb Perovskite Oxide Electrocatalysts: Engineering of Coupled Nanocomposites

A significant issue that bedeviled the commercialization of renewable energy technologies, ranging from low-temperature water electrolyzers to high-temperature solid oxide cells, is the lack of high-performance catalysts. Among various candidates that could tackle such a challenge, perovskite oxides are rising-star materials because of their unique structural and compositional flexibility. However, single-phase perovskite oxides are challenging to satisfy all the requirements of electrocatalysts concurrently for practical applications, such as high catalytic activity, excellent stability, good ionic and electronic conductivities, and superior chemical/thermo-mechanical robustness. Impressively, perovskite oxides with coupled nanocomposites are emerging as a novel form offering multifunctionality due to their intrinsic features, including infinite interfaces with solid interaction, tunable compositions, flexible configurations, and maximum synergistic effects between assorted components. Considering this new configuration has attracted great attention owing to its promising performances in various energy-related applications, this review timely summarizes the leading-edge development of perovskite oxide-based coupled nanocomposites. Their state-of-art synthetic strategies are surveyed and highlighted, their unique structural advantages are highlighted and illustrated through the typical oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reactions in both high and low-temperature applications. Opinions on the current critical scientific issues and opportunities in this burgeoning research field are all provided.

Activated Ni-O-Ir Enhanced Electron Transfer for Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of LaNi1-x Irx O3

Tuning the structure of the active center of catalysts to atomic level provides the most efficient utilization of the active component, which plays an especially important role for precious metals. In this study, the liquid phase ion exchange method is used to introduce atomic Ir into LaNiO₃ perovskite oxide, which shows excellent catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst, LaNi_0.96 Ir_0.04 O₃ , with the optimal concentration of Ir, displays an overpotential of just 280 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 . The introduced Ir enriches the surface electron density significantly, which not only improves site-to-site electron transfer between O and Ni sites but also allows stable adsorption of the intermediates. The results of cyclic voltammetry tests reveal the superior overpotential and remarkable efficiency of the OER process because of the strong interactions in Ni-O-Ir. Moreover, the Ir atom inhibits the participation of a lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) in LaNiO₃ that guarantees the stability of the catalyst in alkaline conditions. It is anticipated that this work will be instrumental for the preparation and study of a broad range of atomic metal-doped perovskite oxides for water splitting.

Perovskite-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media: A mini review

Water electrolysis is one of the attractive technologies for producing clean and sustainable hydrogen fuels with high purity. Among the various kinds of water electrolysis systems, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis has received much attention by combining the advantages of alkaline water electrolysis and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction, which is based on multiple and complex reaction mechanisms, is regarded as a major obstacle for the development of high-efficiency water electrolysis. Therefore, the development of high-performance oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts is a prerequisite for the commercialization and wide application of water electrolysis systems. This mini review highlights the current progress of representative oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts that are based on a perovskite structure in alkaline media. We first summarize the research status of various kinds of perovskite-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts, reaction mechanisms and activity descriptors. Finally, the challenges facing the development of perovskite-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts and a perspective on their future are discussed.
