Multi-Interface Engineering of MXenes for Self-Powered Wearable Devices

Self-powered wearable devices with integrated energy supply module and sensitive sensors have significantly blossomed for continuous monitoring of human activity and the surrounding environment in healthcare sectors. The emerging of MXene-based materials has brought research upsurge in the fields of energy and electronics, owing to their excellent electrochemical performance, large surface area, superior mechanical performance, and tunable interfacial properties, where their performance can be further boosted via multi-interface engineering. Herein, a comprehensive review of recent progress in MXenes for self-powered wearable devices is discussed from the aspects of multi-interface engineering. The fundamental properties of MXenes including electronic, mechanical, optical, and thermal characteristics are discussed in detail. Different from previous review works on MXenes, multi-interface engineering of MXenes from termination regulation to surface modification and their impact on the performance of materials and energy storage/conversion devices are summarized. Based on the interfacial manipulation strategies, potential applications of MXene-based self-powered wearable devices are outlined. Finally, proposals and perspectives are provided on the current challenges and future directions in MXene-based self-powered wearable devices.

MXene-Based Nanocomposites for Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Energy Harvesting Applications

Due to its superior advantages in terms of electronegativity, metallic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, customizable surface chemistry, etc., 2D MXenes for nanogenerators have demonstrated significant progress. In order to push scientific design strategies for the practical application of nanogenerators from the viewpoints of the basic aspect and recent advancements, this systematic review covers the most recent developments of MXenes for nanogenerators in its first section. In the second section, the importance of renewable energy and an introduction to nanogenerators, major classifications, and their working principles are discussed. At the end of this section, various materials used for energy harvesting and frequent combos of MXene with other active materials are described in detail together with the essential framework of nanogenerators. In the third, fourth, and fifth sections, the materials used for nanogenerators, MXene synthesis along with its properties, and MXene nanocomposites with polymeric materials are discussed in detail with the recent progress and challenges for their use in nanogenerator applications. In the sixth section, a thorough discussion of the design strategies and internal improvement mechanisms of MXenes and the composite materials for nanogenerators with 3D printing technologies are presented. Finally, we summarize the key points discussed throughout this review and discuss some thoughts on potential approaches for nanocomposite materials based on MXenes that could be used in nanogenerators for better performance.

Synergistic Enhancement of Filtering Efficiency and Antibacterial Performance of a Nanofiber Air Filter Decorated with Electropolarized Lithium-Doped ZnO Nanorods

According to clinical case reports, bacterial co-infection with COVID-19 can significantly increase mortality, with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) being one of the most common pathogens causing complications such as pneumonia. Thus, during the pandemic, research on imparting air filters with antibacterial properties was actively initiated, and several antibacterial agents were investigated. However, air filters with inorganic nanostructures on organic nanofibers (NFs) have not been investigated extensively. This study aimed to demonstrate the efficiency of electropolarized poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) NFs decorated with Li-doped ZnO nanorods (NRs) to improve the filtering ability and antibacterial activity of the ultrathin air filter. The surfactant was loaded onto the ZnO─known for its biocompatibility and low toxicity─nanoparticles (NPs) and transferred to the outer surface of the NFs, where Li-doped ZnO NRs were grown. The Li-doped ZnO NR-decorated NF effectively enhanced the physical filtration efficiency and antibacterial properties. Additionally, by exploiting the ferroelectric properties of Li-doped ZnO NRs and PVDF-TrFE NFs, the filter was electropolarized to increase its Coulombic interaction with PMs and S. aureus. As a result, the filter exhibited a 90% PM1.0 removal efficiency and a 99.5% sterilization rate against S. aureus. The method proposed in this study provides an effective route for simultaneously improving the air filter performance and antibacterial activity.

Emerging MXene-Based Flexible Tactile Sensors for Health Monitoring and Haptic Perception

Due to their potential applications in physiological monitoring, diagnosis, human prosthetics, haptic perception, and human-machine interaction, flexible tactile sensors have attracted wide research interest in recent years. Thanks to the advances in material engineering, high performance flexible tactile sensors have been obtained. Among the representative pressure sensing materials, 2D layered nanomaterials have many properties that are superior to those of bulk nanomaterials and are more suitable for high performance flexible sensors. As a class of 2D inorganic compounds in materials science, MXene has excellent electrical, mechanical, and biological compatibility. MXene-based composites have proven to be promising candidates for flexible tactile sensors due to their excellent stretchability and metallic conductivity. Therefore, great efforts have been devoted to the development of MXene-based composites for flexible sensor applications. In this paper, the controllable preparation and characterization of MXene are introduced. Then, the recent progresses on fabrication strategies, operating mechanisms, and device performance of MXene composite-based flexible tactile sensors, including flexible piezoresistive sensors, capacitive sensors, piezoelectric sensors, triboelectric sensors are reviewed. After that, the applications of MXene material-based flexible electronics in human motion monitoring, healthcare, prosthetics, and artificial intelligence are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for MXene-based tactile sensors are summarized.

A separator modified by barium titanate with macroscopic polarization electric field for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

The detrimental "shuttling effect" of lithium polysulfides and the sluggish kinetics of the sulfur redox reaction in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) impede the practical application. Considering the high polar chemistry facilitates the anchoring of polysulfides, ferroelectric materials have gradually been employed as functionalized separators to suppress the "shuttling effect". Herein, a functional separator coated with BaTiO₃ with a macroscopic polarization electric field (poled-BaTiO₃) is designed for retarding the problematic shuttle effect and accelerating redox kinetics. Theoretical calculations and experiments revealed that resultant positive charged alignments on the poled-BaTiO₃ coating can chemically immobilize polysulfides, effectively improving the cyclic stability of LSBs. Moreover, the simultaneous reinforcement of the built-in electric field in the poled-BaTiO₃ coating can also improve Li-ion transportation for accelerating redox kinetics. Benefiting from these attributes, the as-developed LSB attains an initial discharge capacity of 1042.6 mA h g^-1 and high cyclic stability of over 400 cycles at 1 C rate. The corresponding LSB pouch cell was also assembled to validate the concept. This work is anticipated to provide new insight into the development of high-performing LSBs through engineering ferroelectric-enhanced coatings.
