S-Doping Promotes Pyridine Nitrogen Conversion and Lattice Defects of Carbon Nitride to Enhance the Performance of Zn-Air Batteries

Design strategies and mechanisms of g-C3N4-based photoanodes for photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water

Emerging photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) systems integrate the advantages of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis and are considered as a promising technology for solving the global organic pollution problem in water environments. Among the photoelectrocatalytic materials applied for organic pollutant degradation, graphitic carbon nitride (CN) has the combined advantages of environmental compatibility, stability, low cost, and visible light response. However, pristine CN has disadvantages such as low specific surface area, low electrical conductivity, and high charge complexation rate, and how to improve the degradation efficiency of PEC reaction and the mineralization rate of organic matter is the main problem faced in this field. Therefore, this paper reviews the progress of various functionalized CN used for PEC reaction in recent years, and the degradation efficiency of these CN-based materials is critically evaluated. First, the basic principles of PEC degradation of organic pollutants are outlined. Then, engineering strategies to enhance the PEC activity of CN (including morphology control, elemental doping, and heterojunction construction) are focused on, and the structure-activity relationships between these engineering strategies and PEC activity are discussed. In addition, the important role of influencing factors on the PEC system is summarized in terms of mechanism, to provide guidance for the subsequent research. Finally, suggestions and perspectives are provided for the preparation of efficient and stable CN-based photoelectrocatalysts for practical wastewater treatment applications.

Europium-Functionalized Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Efficient Chemiluminescence Detection of Singlet Oxygen

Enhancing the sensitivity and selectivity of chemiluminescence (CL) sensors for detecting chemical species in complex samples poses a significant challenge in nanoparticle surface engineering. Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) shows promise but suffers from weak CL intensity and unknown luminescence mechanisms. In this study, we propose a nitrogen defect strategy to enhance the CL efficiency of europium-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride (Eu-CNNPs). By controlling the dosage of the europium modification, we can adjust the nitrogen defect content to reduce the energy gap and improve the CL performance. Remarkably, Eu-CNNPs with rich nitrogen defects exhibit strong chemiluminescence emission specifically for singlet oxygen (1O2) without responding to other reactive oxygen species (ROS). Building upon this finding, we developed a direct, selective, and sensitive CL sensing platform for 1O2 in PM2.5 and monitored 1O2 production in photosensitizers without interference from metal ions. Through extensive experiments, we attribute the 1O2-driven CL response to the presence of abundant nitrogen defects in the CN material, accelerating electron transfer and yielding a high generation of 1O2. Furthermore, chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) between (1O2)2* (1O2 dimeric aggregate) and Eu-CNNPs contributes to strong CL emission. This work provides insights into enhancing the CL performance of CN and offers new possibilities for advancing the practical analysis of nanomaterials using the intriguing mechanism of nitrogen defects.

(Fe-Co-Ni-Zn)-Based Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Electrocatalyst for Zinc-Air Batteries

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have garnered significant interest as a viable substitute for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), primarily due to their impressive energy density and low cost. However, the efficacy of zinc-air batteries is heavily dependent on electrocatalysts, which play a vital role in enhancing reaction efficiency and stability. This scholarly review article highlights the crucial significance of electrocatalysts in zinc-air batteries and explores the rationale behind employing Fe-Co-Ni-Zn-based metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived hybrid materials as potential electrocatalysts. These MOF-derived electrocatalysts offer advantages such as abundancy, high catalytic activity, tunability, and structural stability. Various synthesis methods and characterization techniques are employed to optimize the properties of MOF-derived electrocatalysts. Such electrocatalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity, stability, and selectivity, making them suitable for applications in ZABs. Furthermore, they demonstrate notable capabilities in the realm of ZABs, encompassing elevated energy density, efficacy, and prolonged longevity. It is imperative to continue extensively researching and developing this area to propel the advancement of ZAB technology forward and pave the way for its practical implementation across diverse fields.

Bifunctional Single Atom Catalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries: From Dynamic Mechanism to Rational Design

Ever-growing demands for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) call for efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. Among various electrocatalysts, single atom catalysts (SACs) have received increasing attention due to the merits of high atom utilization, structural tunability, and remarkable activity. Rational design of bifunctional SACs relies heavily on an in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms, especially dynamic evolution under electrochemical conditions. This requires a systematic study in dynamic mechanisms to replace current trial and error modes. Herein, fundamental understanding of dynamic oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction mechanisms for SACs is first presented combining in situ and/or operando characterizations and theoretical calculations. By highlighting structure-performance relationships, rational regulation strategies are particularly proposed to facilitate the design of efficient bifunctional SACs. Furthermore, future perspectives and challenges are discussed. This review provides a thorough understanding of dynamic mechanisms and regulation strategies for bifunctional SACs, which are expected to pave the avenue for exploring optimum single atom bifunctional oxygen catalysts and effective ZABs.

Modified graphene foam as a high-performance catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Gelatine and chitosan were used as natural precursors for nitrogen-doping of the graphene foam structure, creating specific types of active sites. The quantitative and qualitative content of nitrogen groups in the carbon structure was determined, which, under the influence of high temperature, were incorporated and transformed into forms of functional groups favorable for electrochemical application. Electrochemical studies proved that the form of pyridine-N, pyrrole-N, and quaternary-N groups have favorable electrochemical properties in the oxygen reduction reaction comparable to commercial platinum-based electrode materials. Using these materials as electrodes in metal-air batteries or fuel cells may eliminate the use of noble metal-based electrodes.

Progress of Nonmetallic Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reactions

As a key role in hindering the large-scale application of fuel cells, oxygen reduction reaction has always been a hot issue and nodus. Aiming to explore state-of-art electrocatalysts, this paper reviews the latest development of nonmetallic catalysts in oxygen reduction reactions, including single atoms doped with carbon materials such as N, B, P or S and multi-doped carbon materials. Afterward, the remaining challenges and research directions of carbon-based nonmetallic catalysts are prospected.

Utilization of nitrogen, sulfur co-doped porous carbon micron spheres as bifunctional electrocatalysts for electrochemical detection of cadmium, lead and mercury ions and oxygen evolution reaction

The development of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction and heavy metal ion (HMI) detection is significant and challenging. Here, a novel nitrogen, sulfur co-doped porous carbon sphere bifunctional catalyst was designed and fabricated by hydrothermal followed by carbonization using starch as carbon source and thiourea as nitrogen, sulfur source for HMI detection and oxygen evolution reactions. Under the synergistic effect of pore structure, active sites and nitrogen, sulfur functional groups, C-S_0.75-HT-C₈₀₀ demonstrated excellent HMI detection performance and oxygen evolution reaction activity. Under optimized conditions, the detection limits (LODs) of C-S_0.75-HT-C₈₀₀ sensor were 3.90, 3.86 and 4.91 nM for Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺ when detected individually; and the sensitivities were 13.12, 19.50 and 21.19 μA/μM. The sensor also obtained high recoveries of Cd²⁺, Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺ in river water samples. During the oxygen evolution reaction, a Tafel slope of 70.1 mV/dec and a low overpotential of 277 mV were obtained for C-S_0.75-HT-C₈₀₀ electrocatalyst with a current density of 10 mA/cm² in basic electrolyte. This research offers a neoteric and simple strategy in the design as well as fabrication of bifunctional carbon-based electrocatalysts.
