Heterostructured and Mesoporous Nb2O5@TiO2 Core-Shell Spheres as the Negative Electrode in Li-Ion Batteries

Empowering lithium-ion storage: unveiling the superior performance of niobium-based oxide/perovskite heterojunction with built-in electric field

The increasing demand for high-performance electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries has driven significant attention towards Nb2O5 due to its high working voltage, large theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. However, inherent drawbacks such as poor electrical conductivity and sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics have hindered its lithium storage performance. In this study, we introduced KCa2Nb3O10 into Nb2O5 to form a heterojunction, creating a built-in electric field to enhance the migration and diffusion of Li+, effectively promoting electrochemical reaction kinetics. Under the regulation of the built-in electric field, the charge transfer resistance of the KCa2Nb3O10/Nb2O5 anode decreased by 3.4 times compared to pure Nb2O5, and the Li+ diffusion coefficient improved by two orders of magnitude. Specifically, the KCa2Nb3O10/Nb2O5 anode exhibited a high capacity of 276 mAh g-1 under 1 C, retaining a capacity of 128 mAh g-1 even at 100 C. After 3000 cycles at 25 C, the capacity degradation was only 0.012% per cycle. Through combined theoretical calculations and experimental validation, it was found that the built-in electric field induced by the heterojunction interface contributed to an asymmetric charge distribution, thereby improving the rates of charge and ion migration within the electrode, ultimately enhancing the electrochemical performance of the electrode material. This study provides an effective approach for the rational design of high-performance electrode materials.

Facile Synthesis of Pre-Lithiated LiTiO2 Nanoparticles for Quick Charge and Long Lifespan Anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely used as an alternative anodic material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its ultrahigh capacity retention and long cycle lifespan. However, the restriction of lithium insertion, intrinsically poor electronic conductivity, and sluggish lithium ionic kinetics of bulk TiO2 hinder their specific capacity and rate performance. Herein, LiTiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized via a facile ball milling method by the reaction of anatase TiO2 with LiH. The as-prepared LiTiO2 NPs have strong structural stability and a "zero strain" effect during the repeated intercalation/deintercalation, even at low potential. As anodic materials for LIBs, LiTiO2 NPs exhibit a superior rate performance of ∼100 mA h g-1 at 10C (3350 mA g-1) with a capacity retention of 100% after 1000 cycles, which is 5 times higher than that of the original commercial anatase TiO2 powder. The higher specific capacity of LiTiO2 NPs is attributed to the increased conversion of Ti3+ to Ti2+ on the porous surface of LiTiO2 NPs, which provides a more capacitive contribution. This study not only provides a new fabrication approach toward Ti-based anodes for ultrafast LIBs but also underscores the potential importance of embedding lithium into transition metal oxides as a strategy for boosting their electrochemical performance.

A high-performance crystalline Ti2O1.3(PO4)1.6/TiO2 carbon-coated composite as an anode for lithium-ion batteries

A crystalline Ti2O1.3(PO4)1.6/TiO2 carbon-coated composite was synthesized by a glucose-modified hydrothermal method. It shows the highest reversible capacities, excellent rate properties and remarkable cycling performances compared to its counterpart prepared without glucose modification, particularly maintaining a capacity of 233.9 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at 1000 mA g-1.

Stable Multicomponent Multiphase All Active Material Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Due to their high energy density, lithium-ion batteries have been the state-of-the-art energy storage technology for many applications. Energy density can be further improved by engineering of the electrode architecture and microstructure, in addition to more common improvements via materials chemistry. All active material (AAM) electrodes consist of only the electroactive material that stores energy, and such electrodes have advantages to conventional composite processing with regards to improved mechanical stability at increased thicknesses and ion transport properties. However, the absence of binders and composite processing makes the electrode more vulnerable to electroactive materials with volume change upon cycling. Also, the electroactive material must have sufficient electronic conductivity to avoid large matrix electronic overpotentials during electrochemical cycling. TiNb₂O₇ (TNO) and MoO₂ (MO) are electroactive materials with potential advantages as AAM electrodes due to relatively high volumetric energy density. TNO has higher energy density, and MO has much higher electronic conductivity, and thus a multicomponent blend of these materials was evaluated as an AAM anode. Herein, blends of TNO and MO as AAM anodes were investigated, where this is the first use of a multicomponent AAM anode. Electrodes that had both TNO and MO had the highest volumetric energy density, rate capability, and cycle life relative to single component TNO and MO anodes. Thus, using multicomponent materials provides a route to improve AAM electrochemical systems.
