Facile Stratification-Enabled Emergent Hyper-Reflectivity in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

Beyond Color Boundaries: Pioneering Developments in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Photonic Actuators

Creatures in nature make extensive use of structural color adaptive camouflage to survive. Cholesteric liquid crystals, with nanostructures similar to those of natural organisms, can be combined with actuators to produce bright structural colors in response to a wide range of stimuli. Structural colors modulated by nano-helical structures can continuously and selectively reflect specific wavelengths of light, breaking the limit of colors recognizable by the human eye. In this review, the current state of research on cholesteric liquid crystal photonic actuators and their technological applications is presented. First, the basic concepts of cholesteric liquid crystals and their nanostructural modulation are outlined. Then, the cholesteric liquid crystal photonic actuators responding to different stimuli (mechanical, thermal, electrical, light, humidity, magnetic, pneumatic) are presented. This review describes the practical applications of cholesteric liquid crystal photonic actuators and summarizes the prospects for the development of these advanced structures as well as the challenges and their promising applications.

Controllable Circularly Polarized Luminescence with High Dissymmetry Factor via Co-Assembly of Achiral Dyes in Liquid Crystal Polymer Films

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are highly demanded due to their great potential in optoelectronic and chiroptical elements. However, the preparation of CPL films with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum ) remains a formidable task, which impedes their practical application in film-based devices. Herein, a facile strategy to prepare solid CPL film with a high glum through exogenous chiral induction and amplification of liquid crystal polymers is proposed. Amplification and reversion of the CPL appear when the films are annealed at the chiral nematic liquid crystalline temperature and the maximal glum up to 0.30 due to the enhancement of selective reflection. Thermal annealing treatment at different liquid crystalline states facilitates the formation of the chiral liquid phase and adjusts the circularly polarized emission. This work not only provides a straightforward and versatile platform to construct organic films capable of exhibiting strong circularly polarized emission but also is helpful in understanding the exact mechanism for the liquid crystal enhancement of CPL performance.

Excellent ultraviolet-blocking properties of chiral nematic liquid crystals

We report the evaluation of chiral nematic liquid crystal (CNLC) in blocking ultraviolet (UV). The CNLC was coated on a calcium fluoride substrate to measure the spectral transmittance, which was measured to detect the UV-blocking effect of CNLC. The results show that CNLC could reduce UVB (290-320 nm) by 99.9% and UVA (320-400 nm) by 95.6%. The barrier effect of cake-shaped semi-solidified CNLC microspheres was further investigated, and it was found that cake-shaped semi-solidified CNLC microspheres could reduce UVB by 58.2% and UVA by 34.1%. This is due to the chemical absorption property of CNLC, which has UV-absorbing functional groups such as the benzene rings. And the physical reflection properties of CNLC could periodically reflect a certain wavelength of light. Liquid crystal (LC) is a rich set of soft materials with rod-like structures widely existing in nature, which is harmless to the human body and environment. Therefore, using CNLC's function of blocking UV, a new sunscreen can be developed.

Temperature Self-Adaptive and Color-Adjustable Smart Window Based on Templated Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) exhibit selective reflection due to their self-assembled helical superstructures. Reconfigurable templates can achieve integration functions via inducing processes of molecular assemblies. Here we demonstrate temperature self-adaptive and color-adjustable smart windows using CLCs, which are fabricated via the templating method and exhibit simultaneous reflections in the visible and infrared spectra. Reflection bands formed by the refilled CLC materials can be adjusted reversibly both upon thermal and electrical actuation. In CLC with adjustable reflection in the infrared, the central wavelength of the infrared reflection band can be adjusted from 950 nm to 1305 nm via temperature, and from 1150 nm to 950 nm via electric field. A temperature variation of 10.3 °C within 55 s was induced by the single-layer templated CLC cell, and a comfortable temperature range could be effectively maintained by the CLC cell in a varied environment. In CLC with dynamic color in the visible spectrum, color shifts from 530 nm to 650 nm tuned by temperature and from 530 nm to 440 nm adjusted by electric field were obtained. Temperature-responsive reflection in the infrared spectrum contributes to automatic thermal management, and electric-field-induced band shift in the visible spectrum enables active dynamic color adjustment. The presented templated CLC smart windows show considerable potential in energy conservation and biological clock regulation fields.

Specific Alcohol-Responsive Photonic Crystal Sensors Based on Host-Guest Recognition

A photonic crystal material based on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with adsorption capacity is reported. The materials ((A-β-CD)-AM PC) consist of 3D poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) colloidal microsphere arrays and hydrogels supplemented with β-cyclodextrin modified by acryloyl chloride. The prepared materials are then utilized for VOCs gas sensing. The 3D O-(A-β-CD)-AM PC was used to detect toluene, xylene, and acetone and the response was seen as the red-shift of the reflection peak. The 3D I-(A-β-CD)-AM PC was used to detect toluene, xylene, and acetone which occurred redshifted, while methanol, ethanol, and propanol and the peaks' red-shifting was observed. However, among these, methanol gave the largest red-shift response The sensor has broad prospects in the detection of alcohol and the detection of alcohol-loaded drug releases in the future.
