Thermal-Response Proton Conduction in Schiff Base-Incorporated Metal-Organic Framework Hybrid Membranes under Low Humidity Based on the Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Mechanism

Metal Effect on the Proton Conduction of Three Isostructural Metal-Organic Frameworks and Pseudo-Capacitance Behavior of the Cobalt Analogue

Three isostructural transition metal-organic frameworks, [M(bta)0.5(bpt)(H2O)2]·2H2O (M = Co (1), Ni (2), Zn (3), H4bta = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, bpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole), were successfully constructed using different metal cations. These frameworks exhibit a three-dimensional network structure with multiple coordinated and lattice water molecules within the framework, contributing to high stability and a rich hydrogen-bond network. Proton conduction studies revealed that, at 333 K and 98% relative humidity, the proton conductivities (σ) of MOFs 1-3 reached 1.42 × 10-2, 1.02 × 10-2, and 6.82 × 10-3 S cm-1, respectively. Compared to the proton conductivity of the initial ligands, the σ values of the complexes increased by 2 orders of magnitude, with the activation energies decreasing from 0.36 to 0.18 eV for 1, 0.09 eV for 2, and 0.12 eV for 3. An in-depth analysis of the correlation between different metal centers and proton conduction performance indicated that the varying coordination abilities of the metal cations and the water absorption capacities of the frameworks might account for the differences in conductivity. Additionally, the potential of 1 as a supercapacitor electrode material was assessed. 1 exhibited a specific capacitance of 61.13 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1, with a capacitance retention of 82.4% after 5000 cycles, making it a promising candidate for energy storage applications.

Yolk-shell MOF-on-MOF hybrid solid-phase microextraction coatings for efficient enrichment and detection of pesticides: Structural regulation cause performance differences

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based composites with different structure-activity relationships have been widely used in the field of organic pollutant adsorption and extraction. Here, two MOF-on-MOF composites with different structures (yolk-shell and core-shell) from homologous sources were prepared by a simple in-situ growth synthesis method and structural regulation. In order to verify the effect of composite structure on the extraction capacity, the adsorption performance of the yolk-shell structure (YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF) and the core-shell structured (NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF) material were compared by using them as coating material of direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) to enrich six pesticides in five matrices. The results showed that because of the unique hollow hierarchical structure, high specific surface area (930.68 m2 g-1), abundant and open active sites, and synergistic and complementary adsorption forces, YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF composites had the maximum adsorption amount of 36.01-66.31 mg g-1 under the same experiment condition, which was 6.81%-34.26 % higher than that of NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of the prepared materials was verified and elaborated through theoretical simulations and material characterization. Under the optimized conditions, the YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF-coated SPME-HPLC-UV method had a wide linear range (0.241-500 μg L-1), a good linear correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.9988), a low detection limits (0.072-0.567 μg L-1, S/N = 3) and low quantification limits (0.241-1.891 μg L-1, S/N = 10). The relative standard deviations of individual fibers and different batches of fibers were 0.47-6.20 % and 0.22-2.48 %, respectively, and individual fibers could be recycled more than 104 times. This work provided a good synthetic route and comparative ideas for exploring the in-situ growth synthesis of yolk-shell composites with reasonable structure-activity relationships.

Ionic Covalent Organic Framework as a Dual Functional Sensor for Temperature and Humidity

Visual sensing of humidity and temperature by solids plays an important role in the everyday life and in industrial processes. Due to their hydrophobic nature, most covalent organic framework (COF) sensors often exhibit poor optical response when exposed to moisture. To overcome this challenge, the optical response is set out to improve, to moisture by incorporating H-bonding ionic functionalities into the COF network. A highly sensitive COF, consisting of guanidinium and diformylpyridine linkers (TG-DFP), capable of detecting changes in temperature and moisture content is fabricated. The hydrophilic nature of the framework enables enhanced water uptake, allowing the trapped water molecules to form a large number of hydrogen bonds. Despite the presence of non-emissive building blocks, the H-bonds restrict internal bond rotation within the COF, leading to reversible fluorescence and solid-state optical hydrochromism in response to relative humidity and temperature.

α-Cyanostilbene-based Molecule with the Synergistical Mechanisms of AIE, ESIPT and TICT: A New Schiff Base Probe for Selective Detection of Fe3+ and Reversible Response to HCl/NH3 Vapor

We designed and synthesized a new Schiff base probe, which incorporated the salicylaldehyde-analogue α-cyanostilbene and benzophenone hydrazone by the imine linkage. Its chemical structure was verified by FT-IR, MALDI-TOF-MS, HR-MS and 1H/13C NMR technologies. It could exhibit a red fluorescence based on the synergistical effects of aggregation-induce emission (AIE), excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) in the aggregation or solid states. Interestingly, the TLC-based test strip loaded with the target compound showed the reversible fluorescence response to amine/acid vapor and on-site visual fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+. In THF/water mixtures (fw = 90%, 10 µM, pH = 7.4), the detection limit (DL) and the binding constant (Ka) of the developed probe towards Fe3+ were evaluated as 5.50 × 10- 8 M and 1.69 × 105, respectively. The developed probe was successfully applied for the detection of Fe3+ with practical, reliable, and satisfying results.

Phenanthroline and Schiff Base associated Cu(II)-coordinated compounds containing N, O as donor atoms for potent anticancer activity

As an inherent metal ion, copper has been the subject of investigation for developing a novel antitumoral compound that exhibits fewer adverse effects. Copper serves as a cofactor in multiple enzymes, generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), facilitates tumour evolution, metastasis and angiogenesis and has been detected at elevated concentrations in the serum and tissues of various human cancer types. In the given setting, utilising two methodologies in developing novel Copper-based pharmaceuticals for anti-cancer applications is standard practice. These approaches involve either the sequestration of unbound Copper ions or the synthesis of Copper complexes that induce cellular apoptosis. In the past four decades, the latter system has been used, leading to numerous reviews that have examined the anticancer characteristics of a wide range of Copper complexes. These analyses have consistently demonstrated that multiple factors frequently influence the efficacy of these compounds. This review examines the possible anticancer properties of copper and Cu(II) complexes that incorporate Schiff base ligands containing 1,10-phenanthroline. The present study will comprehensively analyse the examined cell lines and mechanistic research associated with each complex.
