Strong photocurrent enhancements in plasmonic organic photovoltaics by biomimetic nanoarchitectures with efficient light harvesting

Optical Manipulation of Incident Light for Enhanced Photon Absorption in Ultrathin Organic Photovoltaics

We attempted to improve the photon absorption of the photoactive layer in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices by device engineering without changing their thickness. Soft nanoimprinting lithography was used to introduce a 1D grating pattern into the photoactive layer. The increase in photocurrent caused by the propagating surface plasmon-polariton mode was quantitatively analyzed by measuring the external quantum efficiency in transverse magnetic and transverse electric modes. In addition, the introduction of an ultrathin substrate with a refractive index of 1.34 improved photon absorption by overcoming the mismatched optical impedance at the air/substrate interface. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of an ultrathin OPV with a 400 nm grating period was 8.34%, which was 11.6% higher than that of an unpatterned ultrathin OPV, and the PCE was 3.2 times higher at a low incident light angle of 80°, indicating very low incident light angle dependence.

Brochosome-Inspired Metal-Containing Particles as Biomimetic Building Blocks for Nanoplasmonics: Conceptual Generalizations

Recently, biological nanostructures became an important source of inspiration for plasmonics, with many described implementations and proposed applications. Among them are brochosome-inspired plasmonic microstructures-roughly spherical core-shell particles with submicrometer diameters and with indented surfaces. Our intention was to start from the nanoplasmonic point of view and to systematically classify possible alternative forms of brochosome-inspired metal-containing particles producible by the state-of-the-art nanofabrication. A wealth of novel structures arises from this systematization of bioinspired metal-containing nanocomposites. Besides various surface nanoapertures, we consider structures closely related to them in electromagnetic sense like surface nano-protrusions, shell reliefs obtained by nano-sculpting, and various combinations of these. This approach helped us build a new design toolbox for brochosome-inspired structures. Additionally, we used the finite elements method to simulate the optical properties of simple brochosome-inspired structures. We encountered a plethora of advantageous optical traits, including enhanced absorption, antireflective properties, and metamaterial behavior (effective refractive index close to zero or negative). We conclude that the presented approach offers a wealth of traits useful for practical applications. The described research represents our attempt to outline a possible roadmap for further development of bioinspired nanoplasmonic particles and to offer a source of ideas and directions for future research.

Anti-Reflective Coating Materials: A Holistic Review from PV Perspective

The solar photovoltaic (PV) cell is a prominent energy harvesting device that reduces the strain in the conventional energy generation approach and endorses the prospectiveness of renewable energy. Thus, the exploration in this ever-green field is worth the effort. From the power conversion efficiency standpoint of view, PVs are consistently improving, and when analyzing the potential areas that can be advanced, more and more exciting challenges are encountered. One such crucial challenge is to increase the photon availability for PV conversion. This challenge is solved using two ways. First, by suppressing the reflection at the interface of the solar cell, and the other way is to enhance the optical pathlength inside the cell for adequate absorption of the photons. Our review addresses this challenge by emphasizing the various strategies that aid in trapping the light in the solar cells. These strategies include the usage of antireflection coatings (ARCs) and light-trapping structures. The primary focus of this study is to review the ARCs from a PV application perspective based on various materials, and it highlights the development of ARCs from more than the past three decades covering the structure, fabrication techniques, optical performance, features, and research potential of ARCs reported. More importantly, various ARCs researched with different classes of PV cells, and their impact on its efficiency is given a special attention. To enhance the optical pathlength, and thus the absorption in solar PV devices, an insight about the advanced light-trapping techniques that deals with the concept of plasmonics, spectral modification, and other prevailing innovative light-trapping structures approaching the Yablonovitch limit is discussed. An extensive collection of information is presented as tables under each core review section. Further, we take a step forward to brief the effects of ageing on ARCs and their influence on the device performance. Finally, we summarize the review of ARCs on the basis of structures, materials, optical performance, multifunctionality, stability, and cost-effectiveness along with a master table comparing the selected high-performance ARCs with perfect AR coatings. Also, from the discussed significant challenges faced by ARCs and future outlook; this work directs the researchers to identify the area of expertise where further research analysis is needed in near future.

Recent progress of light manipulation strategies in organic and perovskite solar cells

Organic and perovskite solar cells are suffering from the insufficient utilization of incident light and thus low light harvesting efficiency despite their rapid progress in the past decade. In this regard, light manipulation strategies have attracted numerous attention to solve this inherent limit. Herein, the recent advances in light manipulation techniques in this area are overviewed. The light manipulation mechanisms are illustrated to classify the structures. Various light manipulation structures, fabrication techniques, and corresponding results are given and discussed, addressing the suppression of surface reflection, nano/micro-structure-induced light scattering, and the plasmonic effects with periodic metallic patterns and metallic nanoparticles. A brief perspective on future research is also proposed for pursuing broadband light harvesting.

Nanostructured Free-Form Objects via a Synergy of 3D Printing and Thermal Nanoimprinting

High-resolution surface patterning has garnered interests as a nonchemical-based surface engineering approach for creating functional surfaces. Applications in consumer products, parts for transportation vehicles, optics, and biomedical technologies demand topographic patterning on 3D net shape objects. Through a hybrid approach, high-resolution surface texture is incorporated onto 3D-printed polymers via direct thermal nanoimprinting process. The synergy of geometry design freedom in 3D printing and the high spatial resolution in nanoimprinting is demonstrated to be a versatile fabrication of high-fidelity surface pattern (from 2 µm to 200 nm resolution) on convex, concave semicylindrical, and hemispherical objects spanning a range of surface curvatures. The novel hybrid fabrication is further extended to achieve a high-resolution curved mold insert for rapid prototyping via injection molding. The versatility of the fabrication strategies reported here not only provides a post-3D printing process that enhances the surface properties of 3D-printed objects but also opens a new pathway to enable future study on the effects of combining microscale and nanoscale surface texture with macroscopic curvature. Both have been known, individually, as an effective approach to tune surface functionalities.

Emerging Novel Metal Electrodes for Photovoltaic Applications

Emerging novel metal electrodes not only serve as the collector of free charge carriers, but also function as light trapping designs in photovoltaics. As a potential alternative to commercial indium tin oxide, transparent electrodes composed of metal nanowire, metal mesh, and ultrathin metal film are intensively investigated and developed for achieving high optical transmittance and electrical conductivity. Moreover, light trapping designs via patterning of the back thick metal electrode into different nanostructures, which can deliver a considerable efficiency improvement of photovoltaic devices, contribute by the plasmon-enhanced light-mattering interactions. Therefore, here the recent works of metal-based transparent electrodes and patterned back electrodes in photovoltaics are reviewed, which may push the future development of this exciting field.

Plasmonic Light Scattering in Textured Silicon Solar Cells with Indium Nanoparticles from Normal to Non-Normal Light Incidence

In this study, we sought to improve the light trapping of textured silicon solar cells using the plasmonic light scattering of indium nanoparticles (In NPs) of various dimensions. The light trapping modes of textured-silicon surfaces with and without In NPs were investigated at an angle of incidence (AOI) ranging from 0° to 75°. The optical reflectance, external quantum efficiency (EQE), and photovoltaic performance were first characterized under an AOI of 0°. We then compared the EQE and photovoltaic current density-voltage (J-V) as a function of AOI in textured silicon solar cells with and without In NPs. We observed a reduction in optical reflectance and an increase in EQE when the cells textured with pyramidal structures were coated with In NPs. We also observed an impressive increase in the average weighted external quantum efficiency (∆EQE_w) and short-circuit current-density (∆J_sc) in cells with In NPs when illuminated under a higher AOI. The ∆EQE_w values of cells with In NPs were 0.37% higher than those without In NPs under an AOI of 0°, and 3.48% higher under an AOI of 75°. The ∆J_sc values of cells with In NPs were 0.50% higher than those without In NPs under an AOI of 0°, and 4.57% higher under an AOI of 75°. The application of In NPs clearly improved the light trapping effects. This can be attributed to the effects of plasmonic light-scattering over the entire wavelength range as well as an expanded angle of incident light.

Preparation of Hollow Biopolymer Nanospheres Employing Starch Nanoparticle Templates for Enhancement of Phenolic Acid Antioxidant Activities

Phenolic acids have been extensively studied because of their bioactive properties and disease prevention and control capacities. However, undesired odors and taste, low aqueous solubility, and thermal and ultraviolet (UV) light instability severely restrict their application. The aim of this work was to evaluate the enhancement in antioxidative activities of phenolic acids in hollow nanospheres and their stability in terms of their antioxidative activities under harsh conditions. For the first time, we have successfully fabricated hollow short linear glucan (SLG)@gum arabic (GA) nanospheres and hollow in situ SLG/GA hybrid nanospheres by removing the sacrificial starch nanoparticle templates through α-amylase treatment and Ostwald ripening. These two hollow nanospheres had a huge cavity area for the encapsulation of phenolic acids, and their loading capacities were >20%. Furthermore, they can be used as nanoreactors to immobilize phenolic acids, enhance their antioxidative activities, and improve their stability when exposed to high salt concentrations, UV light, or heat treatments.

Plasmonic Solar Cells: From Rational Design to Mechanism Overview

Plasmonic effects have been proposed as a solution to overcome the limited light absorption in thin-film photovoltaic devices, and various types of plasmonic solar cells have been developed. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art progress on the design and fabrication of plasmonic solar cells and their enhancement mechanism. The working principle is first addressed in terms of the combined effects of plasmon decay, scattering, near-field enhancement, and plasmonic energy transfer, including direct hot electron transfer and resonant energy transfer. Then, we summarize recent developments for various types of plasmonic solar cells based on silicon, dye-sensitized, organic photovoltaic, and other types of solar cells, including quantum dot and perovskite variants. We also address several issues regarding the limitations of plasmonic nanostructures, including their electrical, chemical, and physical stability, charge recombination, narrowband absorption, and high cost. Next, we propose a few potentially useful approaches that can improve the performance of plasmonic cells, such as the inclusion of graphene plasmonics, plasmon-upconversion coupling, and coupling between fluorescence resonance energy transfer and plasmon resonance energy transfer. This review is concluded with remarks on future prospects for plasmonic solar cell use.

Perovskite Solar Cells on Corrugated Substrates with Enhanced Efficiency

Organometallic halide perovskites solar cells are fabricated on nano-scaled corrugated substrates using a sequential deposition method. The corrugated substrates are fabricated using colloidal lithography followed by reactive ion etching. The corrugated structure is found to accelerate the chemical reaction between the sequentially deposited lead iodide (PbI₂ ) and methyl ammonium iodide layers to form stoichiometric perovskite films, and the corrugated morphology is preserved at the interface of the hole transport layer (HTL) and the perovskite layer. The shunt resistance of the corrugated devices is found to be higher than that of the planar devices, leading to a higher open circuit voltage (V_OC ) and fill factor (FF) in the corrugated devices. Finite-difference time-domain simulation is carried out on both planar and corrugated devices. The results revealed that light absorption is enhanced in the corrugated devices due to the corrugated HTL/perovskite interface, resulting in a significantly higher short circuit current (J_SC ) observed in the corrugated devices. As a result, the average power conversion efficiency increases from 8.7% for the planar devices to 13% for the corrugated devices.

Light Manipulation in Organic Photovoltaics

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) hold great promise for next-generation photovoltaics in renewable energy because of the potential to realize low-cost mass production via large-area roll-to-roll printing technologies on flexible substrates. To achieve high-efficiency OPVs, one key issue is to overcome the insufficient photon absorption in organic photoactive layers, since their low carrier mobility limits the film thickness for minimized charge recombination loss. To solve the inherent trade-off between photon absorption and charge transport in OPVs, the optical manipulation of light with novel micro/nano-structures has become an increasingly popular strategy to boost the light harvesting efficiency. In this Review, we make an attempt to capture the recent advances in this area. A survey of light trapping schemes implemented to various functional components and interfaces in OPVs is given and discussed from the viewpoint of plasmonic and photonic resonances, addressing the external antireflection coatings, substrate geometry-induced trapping, the role of electrode design in optical enhancement, as well as optically modifying charge extraction and photoactive layers.

Thermal-tolerant polymers with antireflective and hydrophobic grooved subwavelength grating surfaces for high-performance optics

A luminescent down-shifting and moth-eyed anti-reflective film for highly efficient photovoltaic devices

Adhesive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films were developed to increase the performance of photovoltaic devices. The films combined two separate features of moth-eye patterns to reduce the reflection of incident light at the film surface and luminescent down-shifting (LDS) CdZnS/ZnS-core/shell quantum dots (QDs) to convert ultraviolet (UV) radiation into visible light at 445 nm. The films were both flexible and self-adhesive, easily attachable to any surface of a solar cell module. By simply attaching the developed films on high-efficiency GaAs solar cells, the short circuit current density and power conversion efficiency of the solar cells increased to 33.8 mA cm(-2) and 28.7%, by 1.1 mA cm(-2) and 0.9 percentage points in absolute values, respectively. We showed that the enhancement of the GaAs solar cells was attributed to both the anti-reflection (AR) properties of the moth-eye patterns and the LDS of QDs using a scattering matrix method and external quantum efficiency measurements. The developed films are versatile in application for solar cells, and expected to aid in overcoming limits of material absorption and device structures.
