Three-Dimensional Conductive Nanocomposites Based on Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Networks and PEDOT:PSS as a Flexible Transparent Electrode for Optoelectronics

Comparison of the analytical performance of two different electrochemical sensors based on a composite of gold nanorods with carbon nanomaterials and PEDOT:PSS for the sensitive detection of nitrite in processed meat products

Herein, two platforms for electrochemical sensors were developed based on a combination of gold nanorods (AuNRs) with electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ErGO) or with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and PEDOT:PSS for nitrite detection. The first and second electrodes were denoted as AuNRs/ErGO/PEDOT:PSS/GCE and AuNRs/MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS/GCE, respectively. Both materials for electrode modifiers were then characterized using UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and HR-TEM. In addition, both sensors exhibit good electrochemical and electroanalytical performance for nitrite detection when investigated using voltammetric techniques. The synergistic effect between the AuNRs and their composites enhanced the electrocatalytic activity toward nitrite oxidation compared with the unmodified electrode, and the electroanalytical performance of the second electrode was superior to the first electrode. This is because the high surface area and conductivity of the MWCNTs in the second electrode provide the highest electrochemically active area (0.1510 cm2) among the other electrodes. Moreover, the second electrode exhibited a higher value for the surface coverage and the diffusion coefficient than the first electrode for nitrite detection. The electroanalytical performances of the first and second electrode for nitrite detection in terms of concentration range are 0.8-100 μM and 0.2-100 μM, limit of detection (0.2 μM and 0.08 μM), and measurement sensitivity (0.0451 μA μM-1 cm-2 and 0.0634 μA μM-1 cm-2). Good selectivity was also shown from both sensors in the presence of NaCl, Na2SO4, Na3PO4, MgSO4, NaHCO3, NaNO3, glucose, and ascorbic acid as interfering species for nitrite detection. Furthermore, both sensors were employed to detect nitrite as a food preservative in the beef sample, and the results showed no significant difference compared with the spectrophotometric technique. These results indicate that both proposed nitrite sensors may be further applied as promising electrochemical sensing platforms for in situ nitrite detection.

Flexible Transparent Conductive Electrodes: Unveiling Growth Mechanisms, Material Dimensions, Fabrication Methods, and Design Strategies

Flexible transparent conductive electrodes (FTCEs) constitute an indispensable component in state-of-the-art electronic devices, such as wearable flexible sensors, flexible displays, artificial skin, and biomedical devices, etc. This review paper offers a comprehensive overview of the fabrication techniques, growth modes, material dimensions, design, and their impacts on FTCEs fabrication. The growth modes, such as the "Stranski-Krastanov growth," "Frank-van der Merwe growth," and "Volmer-Weber growth" modes provide flexibility in fabricating FTCEs. Application of different materials including 0D, 1D, 2D, polymer composites, conductive oxides, and hybrid materials in FTCE fabrication, emphasizing their suitability in flexible devices are discussed. This review also delves into the design strategies of FTCEs, including microgrids, nanotroughs, nanomesh, nanowires network, and "kirigami"-inspired patterns, etc. The pros and cons associated with these materials and designs are also addressed appropriately. Considerations such as trade-offs between electrical conductivity and optical transparency or "figure of merit (FoM)," "strain engineering," "work function," and "haze" are also discussed briefly. Finally, this review outlines the challenges and opportunities in the current and future development of FTCEs for flexible electronics, including the improved trade-offs between optoelectronic parameters, novel materials development, mechanical stability, reproducibility, scalability, and durability enhancement, safety, biocompatibility, etc.

The Influence of Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles and UV Radiation on the Electrical Properties of PEDOT:PSS-Coated Cotton Fabrics

With the rapid growth of electronic textiles, there is a need for highly conductive fabrics containing fewer conductive materials, allowing them to maintain flexibility, low cost and light weight. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), is one of the most promising conductive materials for the production of conductive fabrics due to its excellent properties such as solubility, relatively high conductivity, and market availability. Moreover, its electrical conductivity can be enhanced by polar solvents or acid treatment. The aim of this work was to fabricate conductive cotton fabrics with a small fixed amount of PEDOT:PSS and to investigate how titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles affect the electrical, thermal and structural properties of PEDOT:PSS-coated cotton fabrics. The change in electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite fabric was then related to morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. We found that the sheet resistance of the nanocomposite cotton fabric depends on the TiO₂ concentration, with a minimum value of 2.68 Ω/□ at 2.92 wt% TiO₂. The effect of UV light on the sheet resistance of the nanocomposite cotton fabric was also investigated; we found that UV irradiation leads to an increase in conductivity at an irradiation time of 10 min, after which the conductivity decreases with increasing irradiation time. In addition, the electrical behavior of the nanocomposite cotton fabric as a function of temperature was investigated. The nanocomposite fabrics exhibited metallic behavior at high-TiO₂ concentrations of 40.20 wt% and metallic semiconducting behavior at low and medium concentrations of 11.33 and 28.50 wt%, respectively. Interestingly, cotton fabrics coated with nanocomposite possessed excellent washing durability even after seven steam washes.

Modification of the Highly Conductive PEDOT:PSS Layer for Use in Silver Nanogrid Electrodes for Flexible Inverted Polymer Solar Cells

Silver nanogrid based flexible transparent electrode is recognized as the most promising alternative to ITO electrode for organic electronics, owing to its low production cost and excellent flexibility. Typically, a highly conductive thin film coating layer, such as highly conductive PEDOT:PSS (HC-PEDOT:PSS) is usually deposited onto the Ag-grid electrode to smooth the surface and to minimize the sheet resistance. In this paper, we found that inverted flexible polymer solar cells with structure of Ag-grid/HC-PEDOT:PSS/ZnO/photoactive layer/MoO₃/Al generally exhibits strong S-shaped J-V curves, which could be eliminated by light-soaking treatment. Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) measurement proved that a large work function (WF) difference (0.70 eV) between HC-PEDOT:PSS and ZnO is the main reason for the formation of S-shape. White light soaking of the Ag-grid/HC-PEDOT:PSS gradually decreased the WF of HC-PEDOT:PSS from 5.10 to 4.60 eV, leading to a reduced WF difference between HC-PEDOT:PSS and ZnO from 0.70 to 0.38 eV. Such a WF difference decrease was believed to be the working mechanism for the light-soaking effect in this flexible device. Based on this finding, the HC-PEDOT:PSS solution was then modified by doping with polyethylenimine (PEI) and aqueous ammonia. The modified PEDOT:PSS film is characteristic of adjusting WF through varying PEI doping concentrations. By using such a modified PEDOT:PSS layer, light-soaking-free flexible inverted polymer solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of 6.58% was achieved for PTB7-Th:PC₇₁BM cells. The current work provides a useful guideline for interfacial modification for Ag-grid based flexible electrode.

Order-enhanced silver nanowire networks fabricated by two-step dip-coating as polymer solar cell electrodes

The efficient utilization of Ag NW by avoiding their aggregation and multi-layer stacking in their networks can improve the optical and electrical properties of the derived transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs).
