Fluorescence Response of Conjugated Polyelectrolyte in an Immiscible Two-Phase System via Nonelectrostatic Interaction with Surfactants

Dynamic In Situ Monitoring of the Salt Counter-ion Effect on Surfactant Effectiveness Using Reconfigurable Janus Emulsions

A straightforward method for visualization and quantification of surfactant effectiveness within different electrolyte environments based on using reconfigurable Janus emulsions as novel optical probes is reported. More specifically, we investigated the effect of different types and concentrations of salt counter-ions on the surfactant surface excess of commercial ionic and non-ionic surfactants, namely sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Tween 80 via in situ monitoring the morphological reconfigurations of biphasic Janus emulsions comprising hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon oils. We find that significant variations in interfacial tensions of SDS-stabilized interfaces (up to 15 mN·m^-1) can be evoked by titrating mono-, di-, and trivalent cationic counter-ions, which is coherent with the lyotropic (Hofmeister) series. In contrast, the salt counter-ion effect on the surfactant effectiveness was less pronounced for the non-ionic surfactant Tween 80 (∼3 mN·m^-1). Our results reveal a facile in situ method for monitoring the central role of electrolyte type and concentration on surfactant effectiveness and, more broadly, illustrate that Janus emulsions serve as powerful optical probes to dynamically study the properties of surfactants at liquid interfaces. We demonstrate the utility of our findings for an electro-induced morphological reconfiguration of Janus droplet morphologies by dynamically tuning Cu²⁺ concentration in solution using an electrode setup. The latter provides a unique platform for liquid-phase, real-time, and continuous tuning of Janus droplet morphologies, e.g., for their application in sensing and dynamic optical device platforms.

Processable Conjugated Microporous Polymer Gels and Monoliths: Fundamentals and Versatile Applications

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) as a new type of conjugated polymers have attracted extensive attention in academia and industry because of the combination of microporous structure and π-electron conjugated structure. The construction and application of gels and monoliths based on CMPs constitute a fertile area of research, promising to provide solutions to complex environmental and energy issues. This review summarizes and objectively analyzes the latest advances in the construction and application of processable CMP gels and monoliths, linking the basic and enhanced properties to widespread applications. In this review, we open with a summary of the construction methods used to build CMP gels and monoliths and assess the feasibility of different preparation techniques and the advantages of the products. The CMP gels and monoliths with enhanced properties involving various special applications are then deliberated by highlighting relevant scientific literature and discussions. Finally, we present the issues and future of openness in the field, as well as come up with the major challenges hindering further development, to guide researchers in this field.

Enzyme-Responsive Aqueous Two-Phase Systems in a Cationic-Anionic Surfactant Mixture

Enzyme-instructed self-assembly is an increasingly attractive topic owing to its broad applications in biomaterials and biomedicine. In this work, we report an approach to construct enzyme-responsive aqueous surfactant two-phase (ASTP) systems serving as enzyme substrates by using a cationic surfactant (myristoylcholine chloride) and a series of anionic surfactants. Driven by the hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction, self-assemblies of cationic-anionic surfactant mixtures result in biphasic systems containing condensed lamellar structures and coexisting dilute solutions, which turn into homogeneous aqueous phases in the presence of hydrolase (cholinesterase). The enzyme-sensitive ASTP systems reported in this work highlight potential applications in the active control of biomolecular enrichment/release and visual detection of cholinesterase.

Fluorescence Enhancement of a Cationic Fluorene-Phenylene Conjugated Polyelectrolyte Induced by Nonionic n-Alkyl Polyoxyethylene Surfactants

The modulation of conjugated polyelectrolyte fluorescence response by nonionic surfactants is dependent on the structures of the surfactant and polymer, polymer average molecular weight, and polyelectrolyte-surfactant interactions. In this paper, we study the effect of nonionic n-alkyl polyoxyethylene surfactants (C_iE_j) with different alkyl chain lengths (C_iE₅ with i = 6, 8, 10, and 12) and number of oxyethylene groups (C₁₂E_j with j = 5, 7, and 9) on the photophysics and ionic conductivity of poly{[9,9-bis(6'-N,N,N-trimethylammonium)-hexyl]-2,7-fluorene-alt-1,4-phenylene}bromide (HTMA-PFP) in dimethyl sulfoxide-water 4% (v/v). Molecular dynamics simulations show that HTMA-PFP chains tend to approach as the simulation evolves. However, the minimum distance between the polymer centers of mass increases upon addition of the surfactant and grows with both the surfactant alkyl chain length and the number of oxyethylene groups, although there are no specific polymer-surfactant interactions. A significant increase in the polymer emission intensity has been observed at surfactant concentrations around their critical micelle concentrations (cmcs), which is attributed to polymer aggregate disruption. However, an increase in the solution conductivity for concentrations above the C₁₂E₅ cmc has only been observed for the HTMA-PFP/C₁₂E₅ system. The enhancement of fluorescence emission intensity and conductivity upon surfactant addition increases with polymer average molecular weights and seems to be controlled by the polymer-surfactant proximity, which is maximum for C₁₀E₅ and C₁₂E₅.

A facile and efficient synthetic route to different amine functionalized poly(diphenyl-substituted acetylenes) from the same precursor polymer is reported. The derived polymers demonstrated versatile applications.
