Magnetic Phase Formation in Self-Assembled Epitaxial BiFeO3-MgO and BiFeO3-MgAl2O4 Nanocomposite Films Grown by Combinatorial Pulsed Laser Deposition

Metal Oxide Nanocomposites: A Perspective from Strain, Defect, and Interface

Vertically aligned nanocomposite thin films with ordered two phases, grown epitaxially on substrates, have attracted tremendous interest in the past decade. These unique nanostructured composite thin films with large vertical interfacial area, controllable vertical lattice strain, and defects provide an intriguing playground, allowing for the manipulation of a variety of functional properties of the materials via the interplay among strain, defect, and interface. This field has evolved from basic growth and characterization to functionality tuning as well as potential applications in energy conversion and information technology. Here, the remarkable progress achieved in vertically aligned nanocomposite thin films from a perspective of tuning functionalities through control of strain, defect, and interface is summarized.

Magnetic-field-induced dielectric behaviors and magneto-electrical coupling of multiferroic compounds containing cobalt ferrite/barium calcium titanate composite fibers

Multiferroics have broad application prospects in various fields such as multi-layer ceramic capacitors and multifunctional devices owing to their high dielectric constants and coupled magnetic and ferroelectric properties at room temperature. In this study, cobalt ferrite (CFO)/barium calcium titanate (BCT) composite fibers are prepared from BCT and CFO sols by an electrospinning method, and are then oriented by magnetic fields and sintered at high temperatures. The effects of magnetic fields and CFO contents on the nanostructures and magnetoelectric properties of the composites are investigated. Strong coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric properties occurs in CFO/BCT composites with magnetic orientation. More interestingly, the dielectric constants of CFO/BCT composites with magnetic orientation are found to be enhanced (by ∼1.5-3.5 times) as compared with those of BCT and CFO/BCT without magnetic orientation. The boost of dielectric constants of magnetic-field orientated CFO/BCT is attributed to the magneto-electrical coupling between CFO and BCT, where the polar domains of BCT are pinned by the orientated CFO. Therefore, this work not only provides a novel and effective approach in enhancing the dielectric constants of ceramic ferroelectrics, which is of tremendous value for industrial applications, but also elucidates the interaction mechanisms between ferromagnetic phase and ferroelectric phase in multiferroic compounds.

Distinct Nucleation and Growth Kinetics of Amorphous SrTiO3 on (001) SrTiO3 and SiO2/Si: A Step toward New Architectures

Integration of emerging complex-oxide compounds into sophisticated nanoscale single-crystal geometries faces significant challenges arising from the kinetics of vapor-phase thin-film epitaxial growth. A comparison of the crystallization of the model perovskite SrTiO₃ (STO) on (001) STO and oxidized (001) Si substrates indicates that there is a viable alternative route that can yield three-dimensional epitaxial synthesis, an approach in which STO is crystallized from an amorphous thin film by postdeposition annealing. The crystallization of amorphous STO on single-crystal (001) STO substrates occurs via solid-phase epitaxy (SPE), without nucleation and with a temperature-dependent amorphous/crystalline interface velocity. In comparison, the crystallization of STO on SiO₂/(001) Si substrates requires nucleation, resulting in a polycrystalline film with crystal sizes on the order of 10 nm. A comparison of the temperature dependence of the nucleation and growth processes for these two substrates indicates that it will be possible to create crystalline STO materials using low-temperature crystallization from a crystalline seed, even in the presence of interfaces with other materials. These processes provide a potential route for the formation of single crystals with intricate three-dimensional nanoscale geometries.

High magnetoresistance at low magnetic fields in self-assembled ZnO-Co nanocomposite films

The solid phase growth of self-assembled nanocrystals embedded in a crystalline host matrix opens up wide perspectives for the coupling of different physical properties, such as magnetic and semiconducting. In this work, we report the pulsed laser growth at room temperature of thin films composed of a dispersed array of ferromagnetic Co (0001) nanoclusters with an in-plane mono-size width of 1.3 nm, embedded in a ZnO (0001) crystalline matrix. The as-grown films lead to very high values of magnetoresistance, ranging at 9 T from -11% at 300 K to -19% at 50 K, with a steep decrease of the magnetoresistance at low magnetic fields. We establish the relationship between the magnetoresistance behavior and the magnetic response of the Co nanocluster assembly. A spin-dependent tunneling of the electrons between the Co nanoclusters through and by the semi-insulating ZnO host is achieved in our films, promising with regard to magnetic field sensors or Si-integrated spintronic devices. The effects of thermal annealing are also discussed.
