Abstract
Non-enzymatic sensors with the capability of long-term stability and low cost are promising in glucose monitoring applications. Boronic acid (BA) derivatives offer a reversible and covalent binding mechanism for glucose recognition, which enables continuous glucose monitoring and responsive insulin release. To improve selectivity to glucose, a diboronic acid (DBA) structure design has been explored and has become a hot research topic for real-time glucose sensing in recent decades. This paper reviews the glucose recognition mechanism of boronic acids and discusses different glucose sensing strategies based on DBA-derivatives-based sensors reported in the past 10 years. The tunable pKa, electron-withdrawing properties, and modifiable group of phenylboronic acids were explored to develop various sensing strategies, including optical, electrochemical, and other methods. However, compared to the numerous monoboronic acid molecules and methods developed for glucose monitoring, the diversity of DBA molecules and applied sensing strategies remains limited. The challenges and opportunities are also highlighted for the future of glucose sensing strategies, which need to consider practicability, advanced medical equipment fitment, patient compliance, as well as better selectivity and tolerance to interferences.

Abstract
Three new diboronic acid-substituted bisquinolinium salts were synthesized, structurally described by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and studied in-depth as fluorescent receptors for six monosaccharides and two open-chain polyols in water at physiological pH. The dicationic pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide-based receptors contain two N-quinolinium rings as the fluorescent units covalently linked to three different isomers of phenylboronic acid (ortho, 2; meta, 3; and para, 4) as chelating binding sites for polyols. Additions of glucose/fructose in the micromolar concentration range to receptors 2 and 3 induce significant fluorescence changes, but in the presence of arabinose, galactose, mannose, and xylose, only modest optical changes are observed. This optical change is attributed to a static photoinduced electron transfer mechanism. The meta-diboronic receptor 3 exhibited a high affinity/selectivity toward glucose (K = 3800 M-1) over other monosaccharides including common interfering species such as fructose and mannitol. Based on multiple spectroscopic tools, electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry, crystal structures, and density functional theory calculations, the binding mode between 3 and glucose is proposed as a 1:1 complex with the glucofuranose form involving a cooperative chelating diboronate binding. These results demonstrate the usefulness of a new set of cationic fluorescent diboronic acid receptors with a strong ability for optical recognition of glucose in the sub-millimolar concentration range.

Abstract
A great number of anions exist in biological systems and natural environment, and are highly relevant to human health and environment quality. It is necessary to develop simple and effective sensors to differentiate and identify those similar or different anions. Here, an imidazolium-modified bispyrene-based fluorescent amphiphilic probe DPyDIM was synthesized and its aggregates were applied to detect and discriminate various anions. The fluorescent aggregates exhibit ratiometric responses to different types of anions. Moreover, the ratiometric responses to different types of anions are featured with multiple-wavelength cross-reactivity. The collection of fluorescence variation at four typical wavelengths can generate distinct recognition patterns to specific anions. The heat map and principal component analysis results verify that this single fluorescent sensor system can effectively and sensitively identify 16 kinds of anions that belong to phosphorus-containing, sulfur-containing anions, and anionic surfactants. The cross-reactive sensing of the amphiphilic fluorescent aggregates was attributed to the different influences on the aggregation behaviors of the probes by different anions. The present work provides a promising strategy for effective detection and discrimination of multiple anions by employing dynamic fluorescent aggregates as a sensing platform.

Abstract
Boronic acids can reversibly bind diols, a molecular feature that is ubiquitous within saccharides, leading to their use in the design and implementation of sensors for numerous saccharide species. There is a growing understanding of the importance of saccharides in many biological processes and systems; while saccharide or carbohydrate sensing in medicine is most often associated with detection of glucose in diabetes patients, saccharides have proven to be relevant in a range of disease states. Herein the relevance of carbohydrate sensing for biomedical applications is explored, and this review seeks to outline how the complexity of saccharides presents a challenge for the development of selective sensors and describes efforts that have been made to understand the underpinning fluorescence and binding mechanisms of these systems, before outlining examples of how researchers have used this knowledge to develop ever more selective receptors.

Abstract
Boronic acids reversibly and covalently bind to Lewis bases and polyols, which facilitated the development of a large number of chemical sensors to recognize carbohydrates, catecholamines, ions, hydrogen peroxide, and so on. However, as the binding mechanism of boronic acids and analytes is not very clear, it is still a challenge to discover sensors with high affinity and selectivity. In this review, boronic acid sensors with two recognition sites, including diboronic acid sensors, and monoboronic acid sensors having another group or binding moiety, are summarized. Owing to double recognition sites working synergistically, the binding affinity and selectivity of sensors can be improved significantly. This review may help researchers to sort out the binding rules and develop ideal boronic acid-based sensors.

Abstract
A novel pyrene derivative based composite fluorescent material was developed by immobilizing the pyrene-1-carboxylic acid (PyCOOH) into the pores of porous polyurea microspheres (denoted as PyCOOH-decorated PPUM). Encouragingly, the fluorescence spectrum of this synthesized composite microsphere only exhibited monomer emission of guest PyCOOH, indicating that the porous skeleton PPUM has excellent isolation ability to separate the guest molecules from each other. This discovery will provide an effective strategy to design and synthesize pyrene based host–guest systems without excimer emission. Notably, the PyCOOH-decorated PPUM can keep good fluorescent stability when dispersed in many organic solvents. More excitingly, it was found for the first time that the fluorescence of such a material can be regulated by adding aromatic compounds containing different m-substituted groups. When m-cresol was added, the intensity of the monomer emission enhanced significantly due to the unusual dissolution of the host porous polyurea sphere. By adding the m-toluidine, the monomer emission without the fluorescence of unassociated PyCOOH increased owing to the connection of m-toluidine and PyCOOH which escaped from the pores. In the presence of m-methylacetophenone and m-toluic acid, the monomer emission showing different degrees of decline was observed respectively because of the different substitution process. This result will contribute to the exploration of more promising candidates for pyrene-based fluorescent sensors. The monomer emission of PyCOOH-decorated PPUM can be regulated via adding aromatic compounds containing different m-substituted groups.![]()

Abstract
A highly-integrated sphere-based sensing platform for directly identifying numerous saccharides very efficiently is developed.
Saccharides have strong hydrophilicities, and are complex molecular structures with subtle structure differences, and tremendous structural variations. The creation of one sensing platform capable of efficiently identifying such target systems presents a huge challenge. Using the integration of unique multiple noncovalent interactions simultaneously occurring in poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) with multiple signaling channels, in this research an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-doped photonic structured PIL sphere is constructed. It is found that such a sphere can serve as a highly integrated platform to provide abundant fingerprints for directly sensing numerous saccharides with an unprecedented efficiency. As a demonstration, 23 saccharides can be conveniently identified using only one sphere. More importantly, by using simple ion-exchanges of PIL receptors or/and increasing the AIE signaling channels, this platform is able to perform, on demand, different sensing tasks very efficiently. This is demonstrated by using it for the detection of difficult targets, such as greatly extended saccharides as well as mixed targets, in real-life examples on one or two spheres. The findings show that this new class of platform is very promising for addressing the challenges of identifying saccharides.

Abstract
Charge-transfer (CT) gel materials obtained from low-molecular-weight (LMW) compounds through a supramolecular self-assembly approach have received fascinating attention by many researchers because of their interesting material property and potential applications. However, most of the CT gel materials constructed were of organogels while the construction of CT gels in the form of a hydrogel is a challenge because of the solubility issue in water, which considerably limits the use of CT hydrogels. Herein, for the first time, we report a new LMW gelator [Nα-(fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl)-Nε-(δ-butyric-1-pyrenyl)-l-lysine, (FmKPy)], composed of two functional moieties such as fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl and pyrene, which not only parade both hydro and organo (ambidextrous) supramolecular gel formation but also exhibit CT ambidextrous gels when mixed with an electron acceptor such as 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF). This finding is significant as the established CT organogelator in the literature did not form an organogel in the absence of an electron acceptor or lose their gelation property upon the addition of the acceptor. CT between pyrene and TNF was confirmed by the color change as well as the appearance of the CT band in the visible region of the absorption spectrum. CT between FmKPy and TNF was supported by the solvent dilution method using tetrahydrofuran as the gel breaker and pyrene fluorescence quenching in the case compound containing pyrene and TNF. The morphology of FmKPy ambidextrous gels indicates the fibrous nature while the self-assembled structure is primarily stabilized by π-π stacking among fluorenyl and pyrenyl moieties and hydrogen bonding between amide groups. The FmKPy-TNF CT ambidextrous gel retains the fibrous nature; however, the size of the fibers changed. In FmKPy-TNF CT gels, TNF is intercalated between pyrene moieties in the self-assembled structure as confirmed by fluorescence quenching and powder X-ray diffraction. The FmKPy ambidextrous gel exhibits significant properties such as low minimum gelation concentration (MGC), thixotropic nature, pH stimuli response, and high thermal stability. Upon the addition of TNF, the FmKPy-TNF CT ambidextrous gel maintains all these properties except MGC which increased for FmKPy-TNF. Because pyrene-based LMW organogels have been developed widely for many applications while their hydrogels were limited, the current finding of the pyrene-based ambidextrous fluorescent gel with the CT property provides a wide opportunity to use FmKPy as a soft material maker and also for potential applications in fields like surface coating, three-dimensional printing, and so forth.

Abstract
Imaging-based total bacterial count and type identification of bacteria play crucial roles in clinical diagnostics, public health, biological and medical science, and environmental protection. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of tetraphenylethenes (TPEs) functionalized with one or two aldehyde, carboxylic acid, and quaternary ammonium groups, which were successfully used as fluorescent materials for rapid and efficient staining of eight kinds of representative bacterial species, including pathogenic bacteria Vibrio cholera, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Listeria monocytogenes and potential bioterrorism agent Yersinia pestis. By comparing the fluorescence intensity changes of the aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) materials before and after bacteria incubation, the sensing mechanisms (electrostatic versus hydrophobic interactions) were simply discussed. Moreover, the designed AIE materials were successfully used as an efficient artificial tongue for bacteria discrimination, and all of the bacteria tested were identified via linear discriminant analysis. Our current work provided a general method for simultaneous broad-spectrum bacterial imaging and species discrimination, which is helpful for bacteria surveillance in many fields.

Abstract
The known silatranes have attached substituents such as hydrogen, organyl, organoxy, aminoalkyl, thioorganyl, acyloxy, halogen, pseudohalogen, and other groups; however, their functionalization with any polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon substituent is not recognized; this creates a niche in silatrane chemistry.

Abstract
We synthesized two specially designed pyrenyl (Py) derivatives of phenylboronic acid, PSNB1 and PSNB2, of which PSNB2 self-assemble to form dynamic aggregate in methanol-water mixture (1:99, v/v) via intermolecular H-bonding and pi-pi stacking. Interestingly, the dynamic aggregate shows smart response to presence of fructose (F) as evidenced by fluorescence color change from green to blue. More interestingly, the fluorescence emission of the resulted PSNB2-F changes from blue to green with the addition of formaldehyde (FA). The reason behind is formation of a PSNB2-F dimer via FA cross-linking. Based upon the reactions as found, sensitive and fast sensing of F and FA in water was realized, of which the experimental DLs could be significantly lower than 10 μM for both analytes, and the response times are less than 1 min. It is believed that not only the materials as created may have the potential to find real-life applications but also the strategy as developed can be adopted to develop other dynamic materials.
