Fabrication of Inkjet-Printed Gold Nanostar Patterns with Photothermal Properties on Paper Substrate

Thiolated Cyanines Appended to Partially Pegylated Gold Nanoparticles for Fluorescence Quenching of Two-Channel Photothermal Inks

Following a new approach, we prepared a nanoink with two separate photothermally responsive absorption bands. One is the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption of gold nanoparticles (AuNP, d=17 nm), the second is the absorption band of two cyanine (Cy) dyes, Cy7-C6 or Cy7-C11, grafted to the AuNP surface through thiolated bridges of different lengths: the close proximity to the Au surface induces full quenching of the Cy fluorescence, resulting in thermal relaxation on irradiation. Attempts to full coat AuNP with the lipophilic Cy7-C6 and Cy7-C11 lead to precipitation from aqueous solutions. We thus prepared AuNP with partial pegylation (30, 50, or 70 %), using a long chain thiol-terminated PEG bearing a -COOH function. Addition until saturation of either Cy7-C6 or Cy7-C11 to the partially pegylated AuNP gave the AuNP@Cy/PEGX% hybrids (X=30, 50, 70) that are stable in water and in the water/alcohol mixtures used to prepare the nanoinks. Further overcoating of AuNP@Cy7-C6/PEG50 % with PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) avoids LSPR hybridization in the dry nanoink printouts, that present two separate bands. When irradiated with laser sources near their absorption maxima, the printouts of the AuNP@Cy7-C6/PEG50 %@PAH nanoink respond on two channels, giving different temperature increases depending on the irradiation wavelengths. This enhances the potentiality of use of these nanoinks for photothermal anticounterfait printouts, making more difficult to reproduce the correct ΔT vs λirradiation output.

A review of recent advances in the use of complex metal nanostructures for biomedical applications from diagnosis to treatment

Complex metal nanostructures represent an exceptional category of materials characterized by distinct morphologies and physicochemical properties. Nanostructures with shape anisotropies, such as nanorods, nanostars, nanocages, and nanoprisms, are particularly appealing due to their tunable surface plasmon resonances, controllable surface chemistries, and effective targeting capabilities. These complex nanostructures can absorb light in the near-infrared, enabling noteworthy applications in nanomedicine, molecular imaging, and biology. The engineering of targeting abilities through surface modifications involving ligands, antibodies, peptides, and other agents potentiates their effects. Recent years have witnessed the development of innovative structures with diverse compositions, expanding their applications in biomedicine. These applications encompass targeted imaging, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, near-infrared II imaging, catalytic therapy, photothermal therapy, and cancer treatment. This review seeks to provide the nanomedicine community with a thorough and informative overview of the evolving landscape of complex metal nanoparticle research, with a specific emphasis on their roles in imaging, cancer therapy, infectious diseases, and biofilm treatment. Tissues and organ printing: An evolution of technology and materials

Since its beginnings, three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has been successful because of ongoing advances in operating principles, the range of materials and cost-saving measures. However, the 3DP technological progressions in the biomedical sector have majorly taken place in the last decade after the evolution of novel 3DP systems, generally categorised as bioprinters and biomaterials to provide a replacement, transplantation or regeneration of the damaged organs and tissue constructs of the human body. There is now substantial scientific literature accessible to support the benefits of digital healthcare procedures with the help of bioprinters. It is of the highest significance to know the fundamental principles of the available printers and the compatibility of biomaterials as their feedstock, notwithstanding the huge potential of bioprinting systems to manufacture organs and other human body components. This paper provides a precise and helpful reading of the different categories of bioprinters, suitable biomaterials, numerical simulations and modelling and examples of much acknowledged clinical practices. The paper will also cite the prominent issues that still have not received desired solutions. Overall, the article will be of great use for all the professionals, scholars and engineers concerned with the 3DP, bioprinting and biomaterials.

Harvesting Light To Produce Heat: Photothermal Nanoparticles for Technological Applications and Biomedical Devices

The photothermal properties of nanoparticles (NPs), that is, their ability to convert absorbed light into heat, have been studied since the end of the last century, mainly on gold NPs. In the new millennium, these studies have developed into a burst of research dedicated to the photothermal ablation of tumors. However, beside this strictly medical theme, research has also flourished in the connected areas of photothermal antibacterial surface coatings, gels and polymers, of photothermal surfaces for cell stimulation, as well as in purely technological areas that do not involve medical biotechnology. These include the direct conversion of solar light into heat, a more efficient sun-powered generation of steam and the use of inkjet-printed patterns of photothermal NPs for anticounterfeit printing based on temperature reading, to cite but a few. After an analysis of the photothermal effect (PTE) and its mechanism, this minireview briefly considers the antitumor-therapy theme and takes an in-depth look at all the other technological and biomedical applications of the PTE, paying particular attention to photothermal materials whose NPs have joined those based on Au.

Novel Insights into Inkjet Printed Silver Nanowires Flexible Transparent Conductive Films

Silver nanowire (AgNWs) inks for inkjet printing were prepared and the effects of the solvent system, wetting agent, AgNWs suspension on the viscosity, surface tension, contact angle between ink droplet and poly(ethylene) terephthalate (PET) surface, and pH value of AgNWs ink were discussed. Further, AgNWs flexible transparent conductive films were fabricated by using inkjet printing process on the PET substrate, and the effects of the number printing layer, heat treatment temperature, drop frequency, and number of nozzle on the microstructures and photoelectric properties of AgNWs films were investigated in detail. The experimental results demonstrated that the 14-layer AgNWs printed film heated at 60 °C and 70 °C had an average sheet resistance of 13 Ω∙sq⁻¹ and 23 Ω∙sq⁻¹ and average transparency of 81.9% and 83.1%, respectively, and displayed good photoelectric performance when the inkjet printing parameters were set to the voltage of 20 V, number of nozzles of 16, drop frequency of 7000 Hz, droplet spacing of 15 μm, PET substrate temperatures of 40 °C and nozzles of 35 °C during printing, and heat treatment at 60 °C for 20 min. The accumulation and overflow of AgNWs at the edges of the linear pattern were observed, which resulted in a decrease in printing accuracy. We successfully printed the heart-shaped pattern and then demonstrated that it could work well. This showed that the well-defined pattern with good photoelectric properties can be obtained by using an inkjet printing process with silver nanowires ink as inkjet material.

Metallisation of Textiles and Protection of Conductive Layers: An Overview of Application Techniques

The rapid growth in wearable technology has recently stimulated the development of conductive textiles for broad application purposes, i.e., wearable electronics, heat generators, sensors, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, optoelectronic and photonics. Textile material, which was always considered just as the interface between the wearer and the environment, now plays a more active role in different sectors, such as sport, healthcare, security, entertainment, military, and technical sectors, etc. This expansion in applied development of e-textiles is governed by a vast amount of research work conducted by increasingly interdisciplinary teams and presented systematic review highlights and assesses, in a comprehensive manner, recent research in the field of conductive textiles and their potential application for wearable electronics (so called e-textiles), as well as development of advanced application techniques to obtain conductivity, with emphasis on metal-containing coatings. Furthermore, an overview of protective compounds was provided, which are suitable for the protection of metallized textile surfaces against corrosion, mechanical forces, abrasion, and other external factors, influencing negatively on the adhesion and durability of the conductive layers during textiles' lifetime (wear and care). The challenges, drawbacks and further opportunities in these fields are also discussed critically.

FullyPrinted Flexible Plasmonic Metafilms with Directional Color Dynamics

Plasmonic metafilms have been widely utilized to generate vivid colors, but making them both active and flexible simultaneously remains a great challenge. Here flexible active plasmonic metafilms constructed by printing electrochromic nanoparticles onto ultrathin metal films (<15 nm) are presented, offering low-power electricallydriven color switching. In conjunction with commercially available printing techniques, such flexible devices can be patterned using lithography-free approaches, opening up potential for fullyprinted electrochromic devices. Directional optical effects and dynamics show perceived upward and downward colorations can differ, arising from the dissimilar plasmonic mode excitation between nanoparticles and ultrathin metal films.

A Review on Recent Trends in Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles for Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease that has affected mankind. The anti-TB treatment has been used from ancient times to control symptoms of this disease but these medications produced some serious side effects. Herbal products have been successfully used for the treatment of TB. Gold is the most biocompatible metal among all available for biomedical purposes so Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have sought attention as an attractive biosynthesized drug to be studied in recent years for bioscience research. GNPs are used as better catalysts and due to unique small size, physical resemblance to physiological molecules, biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity extensively used for various applications including drug and gene delivery. Greenly synthesized GNPs have much more potential in different fields because phytoconstituents used in GNP synthesis itself act as reducing and capping agents and produced more stabilized GNPs. This review is devoted to a discussion on GNPs synthesis with herbs for TB. The main focus is on the role of the natural plant bio-molecules involved in the bioreduction of metal salts during the GNPs synthesis with phytoconstituents used as antitubercular agents.

Cellulose paper support with dual-layered nano-microstructures for enhanced plasmonic photothermal heating and solar vapor generation

Plasmonic nanoparticles, such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), have been actively applied in solar vapor generation for seawater desalination and water purification, owing to their photothermal heating performances. Such nanoparticles have been frequently anchored within porous supporting materials to ensure easy handling and water absorption. However, there has been limited progress in improving the transport efficiency of light to nanoparticles within porous supports to achieve more effective photothermal heating. Here, we show an enhanced light absorption of AuNPs by supporting on a cellulose paper with tailored porous structures for efficient photothermal heating. The paper consists of AuNP-anchored cellulose nanofibers and cellulose pulp as the top and bottom layers, respectively, which provides dual-layered porous nano-microstructures in the perpendicular direction. Then, the bottom layer with pulp-derived microstructures reflects the transmitted light back to AuNPs within the top layer, which improves their light absorptivity. Thus, under 1 sun illumination, the dual-layered paper demonstrates superior performance in photothermal heating (increases from 28 °C to 46 °C) and solar vapor generation (1.72 kg m^-2 h^-1) compared with the single-layered AuNP-anchored cellulose nanofiber paper even at the same AuNP content. Furthermore, the water evaporation rate per AuNP content of the dual-layered paper is more than 2 times higher than those of the state-of-the-art AuNP-anchored porous materials under the same light irradiation. This strategy enables the efficient use of precious plasmonic nanoparticles for further development of solar vapor generation.

Suitable Polymeric Coatings to Avoid Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Hybridization in Printed Patterns of Photothermally Responsive Gold Nanoinks

When using gold nanoparticle (AuNP) inks for writing photothermal readable secure information, it is of utmost importance to obtain a sharp and stable shape of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption bands in the prints. The T increase at a given irradiation wavelength (ΔT_λ) is the retrieved information when printed patterns are interrogated with a laser source. As ΔT_λ is proportional to the absorbance at the wavelength λ, any enlargement or change of the absorbance peak shape in a printed pattern would lead to wrong or unreliable reading. With the aim of preparing AuNP inks suitable for inkjet printing of patterns with stable and reliable photothermal reading, we prepared liquid solutions of spherical AuNP coated with a series of different polymers and with or without additional dispersant. The optical stability of the inks and of the printed patterns were checked by monitoring the shape changes of the sharp LSPR absorption band of AuNP in the visible (λ_max 519 nm) along weeks of ageing. AuNP coated with neutral polyethylenglycol thiols (HS-PEG) of mw 2000–20000 showed a strong tendency to rapidly agglomerate in the dry prints. The close contact between agglomerated AuNP resulted in the loss of the pristine shape of the LSPR band, that flattened and enlarged with the further appearance of a second maximum in the Near IR, due to plasmon hybridization. The tendency to agglomerate was found directly proportional to the PEG mw. Addition of the ethylcellulose (EC) dispersant to inks resulted in an even stronger and faster tendency to LSPR peak shape deformation in the prints due to EC hydrophobicity, that induced AuNP segregation and promoted agglomeration. The introduction of a charge on the AuNP coating revelead to be the correct way to avoid agglomeration and obtain printed patterns with a sharp LSPR absorption band, stable with ageing. While the use of a simple PEG thiol with a terminal negative charge, HS-PEGCOO(−) (mw 3000), was not sufficient, overcoating with the positively charged polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and further overcoating with the negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) yielded AuNP@HS-PEGCOO(−)/PAH(+) and AuNP@HS-PEGCOO(−)/PAH(+)/PSS(−), both giving stable prints. With these inks we have shown that it is possible to write photothermally readable secure information. In particular, the generation of reliable three-wavelength photothemal barcodes has been demonstrated.

Investigation of biodistribution and tissue penetration of PEGylated gold nanostars and their application for photothermal cancer treatment in tumor-bearing mice

PEGylated gold nanostars (pAuNSs) and their radioactive surrogate (¹¹¹In–DTPA–pAuNS), with unique physiochemical properties, are thought to be a promising agent for image-guided photothermal therapy (PTT).

Novel photo-thermally active polyvinyl alcohol-Prussian blue nanoparticles hydrogel films capable of eradicating bacteria and mitigating biofilms

Antibacterial treatment is an essential issue in many diverse fields, from medical device treatments (for example prostheses coating) to food preservation. However, there is a need of novel and light-weight materials with high antibacterial efficiency (preferably due to the physical activation). Utilization of photo-thermally active nanoparticles can lead to novel and re-usable materials that can be remotely activated on-demand to thermally eradicate bacteria and mitigate biofilm formation, therefore meeting the above challenge. In this study polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel films containing non-toxic and highly photo-thermally active Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles were fabricated. The confocal microscopy studies indicated a uniform nanoparticle distribution and a low degree of aggregation. Upon near-infrared (NIR; 700 and 800 nm) light irradiation of PVA-PB films, the local temperature increases rapidly and reaches a plateau (up to ΔT ≅ 78 °C), within ≈6-10 s under relatively low laser intensities, I ≅ 0.3 W cm^-2. The high and localized increase of temperature on the fabricated films resulted in an efficient antibacterial effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacteria. In addition, the localized photo-thermal effect was also sufficient to substantially mitigate biofilms growth.

Thermo-plasmonic gold nanofilms for simple and mass-producible photothermal neural interfaces

In recent years, photothermal stimulation methods using plasmonic metal nanoparticles have emerged as non-genetic optical techniques in neuromodulation. Although nanoparticle-based photothermal stimulation shows great potential in the excitation and the inhibition of neural activity, the complex synthesis processes of the nanoparticles and the lack of large-area deposition methods can be limiting factors for the development of photothermal neural devices. In this paper, we propose a plasmonic gold nanofilm, fabricated by a standard thermal evaporation process, as a simple and mass-producible photothermal neural interface layer for microelectrode array (MEA) chips. The absorption of the gold nanofilm at near infrared wavelengths is optimized to maximize the photothermal effect by varying the thickness and microstructure of the gold nanofilm. With the optimized conditions, a significantly strong photothermal effect is applied on MEAs without affecting the neural signal recording capability. Finally, primary rat hippocampal neuronal cultures are used to show that the photothermal neural inhibition using the gold nanofilm is as effective as that using the plasmonic nanoparticles. Due to the greater simplicity and versatility of the fabrication process, the plasmonic gold nanofilm can provide a promising solution for the mass production of photothermal platforms.

Inkjet-Printed Biofunctional Thermo-Plasmonic Interfaces for Patterned Neuromodulation

Localized heat generation by the thermo-plasmonic effect of metal nanoparticles has great potential in biomedical engineering research. Precise patterning of the nanoparticles using inkjet printing can enable the application of the thermo-plasmonic effect in a well-controlled way (shape and intensity). However, a universally applicable inkjet printing process that allows good control in patterning and assembly of nanoparticles with good biocompatibility is missing. Here we developed inkjet-printing-based biofunctional thermo-plasmonic interfaces that can modulate biological activities. We found that inkjet printing of plasmonic nanoparticles on a polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer substrate coating enables high-quality, biocompatible thermo-plasmonic interfaces across various substrates (rigid/flexible, hydrophobic/hydrophilic) by induced contact line pinning and electrostatically assisted nanoparticle assembly. We experimentally confirmed that the generated heat from the inkjet-printed thermo-plasmonic patterns can be applied in micrometer resolution over a large area. Lastly, we demonstrated that the patterned thermo-plasmonic effect from the inkjet-printed gold nanorods can selectively modulate neuronal network activities. This inkjet printing process therefore can be a universal method for biofunctional thermo-plasmonic interfaces in various bioengineering applications.

Fabrication of photothermally active poly(vinyl alcohol) films with gold nanostars for antibacterial applications

The unique photothermal properties of non-spherical gold nanoparticles under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation find broad application in nanotechnology and nanomedicine. The combination of their plasmonic features with widely used biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films can lead to novel hybrid polymeric materials with tunable photothermal properties and a wide range of applications. In this study, thin PVA films containing highly photothermally efficient gold nanostars (GNSs) were fabricated and their properties were studied. The resulting films displayed good mechanical properties and a pronounced photothermal effect under NIR irradiation. The local photothermal effect triggered by NIR irradiation of the PVA-GNS films is highly efficient at killing bacteria, therefore providing an opportunity to develop new types of protective antibacterial films and coatings.

Indocyanine green-loaded gold nanostars for sensitive SERS imaging and subcellular monitoring of photothermal therapy

We have demonstrated that a typical nanothermometer was incorporated in a bovine serum albumin stabilized gold nanostar-indocyanine green (denoted as GNS-ICG-BSA) nanoprobe to realize surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) imaging-based real-time sensitive monitoring of intracellular temperature in photothermal therapy (PTT), which significantly improved the spatial resolution compared to infrared thermal imaging. Herein, an exogenous thermosensitive molecule, ICG, acting as a tri-functional agent, was selected as the Raman reporter instead of direct cellular biochemical changes. The triggering of the obtained probe was unaffected by the cellular microenvironment, so it can act as a monitor of PTT in various cell types. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used to investigate the thermosensitive mechanism of ICG. The actively targeted GNS-ICG-BSA nanotags were used to induce SERS mapping-guided in vitro PTT of U87 glioma cells. Meanwhile, small temperature variations within a cell during PTT can be precisely monitored through the SERS fingerprint information, with a spatial resolution at the subcellular level and a sensitivity of 0.37 °C. Thus, the integrated GNS-ICG-BSA nanotags can be treated as a theranostic probe, a SERS imaging probe and an intracellular thermometer. Moreover, the good biocompatibility and the low cytotoxicity of GNS-ICG-BSA nanotags, together with their superior photothermal ablation effect on U87 glioma cells have been confirmed. This suggested that the implanted nanothermometry approach would be promising for a better understanding of the biological processes at subcellular level and provide new insights into the fabrication of a multifunctional nanoplatform. Furthermore, this study revealed that the SERS-based monitoring technique can offer great potential for theranostics as an emerging strategy.

Inkjet-printed gold nanorods using biocompatible polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer coating for patterned photothermal applications

Photothermal effect using biocompatible nanoparticles with near infrared wavelength light is a versatile tool in biomedical applications due to the temperature sensitivity of cells and good penetrability of the light through many biological systems. However, precise patterning of the nanoparticles on biochips to control the location and intensity of the photothermal effect requires suitable fabrication methods. In this report, we show that inkjet printing of aqueous nanoparticle solution on polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer coated substrates enables micron-scale patterning of gold nanorods, and thus application of photothermal effect with good control.

Reunderstanding the Fluorescent Behavior of Four-Coordinate Monoboron Complexes Containing Monoanionic Bidentate Ligands

We demonstrated for the first time that, at temperatures below the melting point of a given polar solvent, the emission of some four-coordinate monoboron complexes containing monoanionic bidentate (NO) ligands shifted to lower wavelengths, but no such shift was observed for studies conducted in nonpolar solvents. This means that the emission from a polar solvent appears at shorter wavelengths if compared with that from a nonpolar solvent when the measurement was performed at low temperatures, a phenomenon totally different from that observed for conventional solvatochromic fluorophores. The finding was rationalized by considering the temperature-dependent conformational relaxation of the tetrahedron monoboron complexes from their local excited (LE) state to their relaxed excited (RE) state. Further studies revealed that variating the structure of the chelating ligands could result in remarkable changes in the fluorescent colors of the monoboron complexes. However, changing the structure of other two monodentate ligands showed little effect upon the fluorescence property of the compounds. Therefore, it is anticipated that the monoboron complexes may be taken as a platform to construct a variety of functional molecular systems via alternating the structure of the chelating ligand and that of the monodentate ligand. As an example, naphthalene was introduced as a monodentate ligand, and independent emissions from naphthalene unit and the other part of the monoboron complex as well as intramolecular energy transfer between them were observed. It is believed that the present work provides a new insight into the monoboron complexes, laying the foundation for them to be explored for developing novel molecular systems.

Surface plasmon resonance in gold nanoparticles: a review

In the last two decades, plasmon resonance in gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) has been the subject of intense research efforts. Plasmon physics is intriguing and its precise modelling proved to be challenging. In fact, plasmons are highly responsive to a multitude of factors, either intrinsic to the Au NPs or from the environment, and recently the need emerged for the correction of standard electromagnetic approaches with quantum effects. Applications related to plasmon absorption and scattering in Au NPs are impressively numerous, ranging from sensing to photothermal effects to cell imaging. Also, plasmon-enhanced phenomena are highly interesting for multiple purposes, including, for instance, Raman spectroscopy of nearby analytes, catalysis, or sunlight energy conversion. In addition, plasmon excitation is involved in a series of advanced physical processes such as non-linear optics, optical trapping, magneto-plasmonics, and optical activity. Here, we provide the general overview of the field and the background for appropriate modelling of the physical phenomena. Then, we report on the current state of the art and most recent applications of plasmon resonance in Au NPs.

Enhanced Photothermal Bactericidal Activity of the Reduced Graphene Oxide Modified by Cationic Water-Soluble Conjugated Polymer

Surface modification of graphene is extremely important for applications. Here, we report a grafting-through method for grafting water-soluble polythiophenes onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets. As a result of tailoring of the side chains of the polythiophenes, the modified RGO sheets, that is, RGO-g-P3TOPA and RGO-g-P3TOPS, are positively and negatively charged, respectively. The grafted water-soluble polythiophenes provide the modified RGO sheets with good dispersibility in water and high photothermal conversion efficiencies (ca. 88%). Notably, the positively charged RGO-g-P3TOPA exhibits unprecedentedly excellent photothermal bactericidal activity, because the electrostatic attractions between RGO-g-P3TOPA and Escherichia coli (E. coli) bind them together, facilitating direct heat conduction through their interfaces: the minimum concentration of RGO-g-P3TOPA that kills 100% of E. coli is 2.5 μg mL^-1, which is only 1/16th of that required for RGO-g-P3TOPS to exhibit a similar bactericidal activity. The direct heat conduction mechanism is supported by zeta-potential measurements and photothermal heating tests, in which the achieved temperature of the RGO-g-P3TOPA suspension (2.5 μg mL^-1, 32 °C) that kills 100% of E. coli is found to be much lower than the thermoablation threshold of bacteria. Therefore, this research demonstrates a novel and superior method that combines photothermal heating effect and electrostatic attractions to efficiently kill bacteria.

Photothermal effect of gold nanostar patterns inkjet-printed on coated paper substrates with different permeability

Inkjet printing of spherical gold nanoparticles is widely applied in the fabrication of analytical and diagnostics tools. These methods could be extended to non-spherical gold nanoparticles that can efficiently release heat locally when irradiated in the near infrared (NIR) wavelength region, due to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). However, this promising application requires the ability to maintain high efficiency and tunability of the NIR LSPR of the printed nanoparticles. In this study stable inks containing PEGylated gold nanostars (GNS) were fabricated and successfully inkjet-printed onto differently coated paper substrates with different porosity and permeability. A pronounced photothermal effect was observed under NIR excitation of LSPR of the printed GNS patterns even at low laser intensities. It was found that beside the direct role of the laser intensity, this effect depends appreciably on the printing parameters, such as drop density (δ, drops/mm2) and number of printed layers, and, critically, on the permeability of the coated paper substrates. These results will promote the development of GNS-based printed platforms for local photothermal therapy.

Paper-Based Inkjet-Printed Flexible Electronic Circuits

Printed flexible electronics have been widely studied for their potential use in various applications. In this paper, a simple, low-cost method of fabricating flexible electronic circuits with high conductivity of 4.0 × 10⁷ S·m^-1 (about 70% of the conductivity of bulk copper) is demonstrated. Teslin paper substrate is treated with stannous chloride (SnCl₂) colloidal solution to reduce the high ink absorption rate, and then the catalyst ink is inkjet-printed on its surface, followed by electroless deposition of copper at low temperature. In spite of the decrease in conductance to some extent, electronic circuits fabricated by this method can maintain function even under various folding angles or after repeated folding. This developed technology has great potential in a variety of applications, such as three-dimensional devices and disposable RFID tags.
