Polymer Membranes with Vertically Oriented Pores Constructed by 2D Freezing at Ambient Temperature

Formation of Microporous Poly Acrylonitrile-Co-Methyl Acrylate Membrane via Thermally Induced Phase Separation for Immiscible Oil/Water Separation

An interconnected sponge structure and porous surface poly (acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate) (P(AN-MA)) microfiltration membranes (MF) were fabricated via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) by using caprolactam (CPL), and acetamide (AC) as the mixed diluent. When the ternary system was composed of 15 wt.% P(AN-MA), 90 wt.% CPL, and 10 wt.% AC and formed in a 25 °C air bath, the membrane exhibited the highest water flux of 8107 L/m2·h. The P(AN-MA) membrane contained hydrophobic groups (-COOCH3) and hydrophilic groups (-CN), leading it to exhibit oleophobic properties underwater and hydrophobic properties in oil. The membrane demonstrates efficient separation of immiscible oil/water mixtures. The pure water flux of the petroleum ether/water mixture measured 870 L/m2·h, and the pure oil flux of the petroleum tetrachloride/water mixture measured 1230 L/m2·h under the influence of gravity. Additionally, the recovery efficiency of diluents through recrystallization was 85.3%, significantly reducing potential pollution and production costs.

Janus Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Membranes with Penetrative Pores for Photothermal Desalination

Solar-driven desalination has been considered as a promising technology for producing clean water through an abundant and pollution-free energy source. It is a critical challenge to reasonably design the porous morphology and the thermal management of photothermal membranes for enabling efficient energy conversion and water production. In this work, a Janus poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane was fabricated in combination of penetrative pore structure, asymmetric surface wettability with proper thermal management for high-efficiency solar desalination. Highly open and directly penetrative pores achieved by the two-dimensional solvent freezing strategy are considered to provide direct pathways for water and vapor transportation. The unique feature of hydrophobic upper layer/hydrophilic lower layer enables the photothermal membranes to self-float on the water surface and rapidly pump water from the bulk to the surface. The resulting Janus membrane exhibits a satisfactory light absorbance as high as 97% and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 62.8% under one-sun irradiation in a direct contact mode. The solar-to-vapor efficiency rises up to 90.2% with the assistance of a thermal insulator adopted beneath. Both the Janus membrane and the composite setup are able to work efficiently with a high stability in seawater desalination, and the concentration of ion in condensed water is reduced to below 1 ppm. Therefore, Janus membranes with directly penetrative pores and photothermal surfaces shine a light on the development of high-performance solar evaporators for the practical application in solar seawater desalination.

Mesoscopic Simulations of Adsorption and Association of PEO-PPO-PEO Triblock Copolymers on a Hydrophobic Surface: From Mushroom Hemisphere to Rectangle Brush

The dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method is used to investigate the adsorption behavior of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers at the liquid/solid interface. The effect of molecular architecture on the self-assembled monolayer adsorption of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers on hydrophobic surfaces is elucidated by the adsorption process, film properties, and adsorption morphologies. The adsorption thicknesses on hydrophobic surfaces and the diffusion coefficient as well as the aggregation number of Pluronic copolymers in aqueous solution observed in our simulations agree well with previous experimental and numerical observations. The radial distribution function revealed that the ability of self-assembly on hydrophobic surfaces is P123 > P84 > L64 > P105 > F127, which increased with the EO ratio of the Pluronic copolymers. Moreover, the shape parameter and the degree of anisotropy increase with increasing molecular weight and mole ratio of PO of the Pluronic copolymers. Depending on the conformation of different Pluronic copolymers, the morphology transition of three regimes on hydrophobic surfaces is present: mushroom or hemisphere, progressively semiellipsoid, and rectangle brush regimes induced by decreasing molecular weight and mole ratio of EO of Pluronic copolymers.
