Surface CuO, Bi2O3, and CeO2 Species Supported in TiO2-Anatase: Study of Interface Effects in Toluene Photodegradation Quantum Efficiency

Coffee-waste templated CeOx/TiO2 nanostructured materials for selective photocatalytic oxidations

An environmentally friendly solvent-free approach was tested using spent coffee as a biomass sacrificial template for the preparation of TiO₂ modified with CeO_x. The use of coffee as a template pursues the preparation of a nanostructured heterojunction without the need for a solvent. Two variables were optimized in the synthesis process, i.e. calcination temperature and proportion of CeO_x. Firstly, bare coffee-template titania was prepared to explore the effect of the calcination temperature, within 500-650 °C. The anatase phase was obtained up to 600 °C. Higher temperatures, i.e. 650 °C, led to the appearance of rutile (10%) and efficient removal of the sacrificial agent (0.6% residue). The maximum photocatalytic activity in terms of conversion, in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, was achieved employing the bare coffee-template TiO₂ at 650 °C, and it was found comparable to the benchmarked P25. The incorporation of ceria in the solvent-free approach considerably improved photocatalytic benzaldehyde production. No changes in the XRD pattern of TiO₂ were appreciated in the presence of ceria due to the low amount added, within 1.5-6.0%, confirmed by XPS as superficial Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺. The UV-visible absorption spectra were considerably redshifted in the presence of Ce, reducing the bandgap values of bare titania. An optimum amount of ceria in the structure within 3-0% was found. In this case, the selectivity towards benzaldehyde was ca. 75%, 3 times higher than the selectivity value registered for the benchmarked P25 or the bare prepared TiO₂.

Sunlight-Operated TiO2-Based Photocatalysts

Photo-catalysis is a research field with broad applications in terms of potential technological applications related to energy production and managing, environmental protection, and chemical synthesis fields. A global goal, common to all of these fields, is to generate photo-catalytic materials able to use a renewable energy source such as the sun. As most active photocatalysts such as titanium oxides are essentially UV absorbers, they need to be upgraded in order to achieve the fruitful use of the whole solar spectrum, from UV to infrared wavelengths. A lot of different strategies have been pursued to reach this goal. Here, we selected representative examples of the most successful ones. We mainly highlighted doping and composite systems as those with higher potential in this quest. For each of these two approaches, we highlight the different possibilities explored in the literature. For doping of the main photocatalysts, we consider the use of metal and non-metals oriented to modify the band gap energy as well as to create specific localized electronic states. We also described selected cases of using up-conversion doping cations. For composite systems, we described the use of binary and ternary systems. In addition to a main photo-catalyst, these systems contain low band gap, up-conversion or plasmonic semiconductors, plasmonic and non-plasmonic metals and polymers.

Temperature-Program Assisted Synthesis of Novel Z-Scheme CuBi₂O₄/β-Bi₂O₃ Composite with Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Performance

Novel Z-Scheme CuBi₂O₄/β-Bi₂O₃ composite photocatalysts with different mass ratios and calcination temperatures were firstly synthesized by the hydrothermal method following a temperature-programmed process. The morphology, crystal structure, and light absorption properties of the as-prepared samples were systematically characterized, and the composites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity toward diclofenac sodium (DS) degradation compared with CuBi₂O₄ and β-Bi₂O₃ under visible light irradiation. The optimal photocatalytic efficiency of the composite, achieved at the mass ratio of CuBi₂O₄ and β-Bi₂O₃ of 1:2.25 and the calcination temperature of 600 °C is 92.17%. After the seventh recycling of the composite, the degradation of DS can still reach 82.95%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of CuBi₂O₄/β-Bi₂O₃ is closely related to OH^•, h⁺ and O₂^•−, and the photocatalytic mechanism of CuBi₂O₄/β-Bi₂O₃ can be explained by the Z-Scheme theory.
